EMF Directive - are you compliant?

Ajax TOCCO International Ltd have added EMF testing to their portfolio of services that they offer to the industry.

If your company operates induction heating equipment, welding equipment or any equipment that produces a magnetic field, you have an obligation to carry out an assessment of the risks to employees of exposure to these magnetic fields and to reduce those risks if they fall outside the regulations guidelines.

Employers should be aware that from 1st July 2016 the UK introduced the Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations. The regulations bring into force the laws and administrative provisions necessary to comply with 2013/35/EU directive. The exposure levels listed are based on the ICNIRP occupational guidelines but Reference Levels are termed Action Levels (ALs) and Basic Restrictions become Exposure Limit Values (ELVs). The regulation also lists a number of obligations of employers minimum health and safety requirements regarding the exposure of workers to the risks arising from physical agents.

It should be noted however that compliance with the regulations may not necessarily preclude interference or effects on medical devices such as pacemakers. Interference with pacemakers may occur below reference levels so if an assessment is to be made concerning a pacemaker specific advice should be sought from the device manufacturer.

Guidelines for limiting exposure to low frequency electric and magnetic fields are published by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The most recent guidelines covering low frequencies were published by ICNIRP in 20101.

The ICNIRP guidelines are intended to limit exposure, providing protection against all established adverse health effects. They do not address product performance standards, which are intended to limit electromagnetic field (EMF) emissions from specific devices.

The guidelines list different permissible exposure levels for the general public and those who are occupationally exposed. The general public levels are more stringent than the occupational levels in that the general population will contain individuals of all ages and of varying health status which might increase the variability of individual susceptibilities.

ICNIRP list a set of values called basic restrictions. These must not be exceeded but are listed as electric fields internal to the body so are difficult to measure in practice. Hence ICNIRP also list values called reference levels which can be measured more easily. Reference levels are listed for Electric (E) field, Magnetic (H) field & Magnetic flux density (B) and the values listed are conservative so if met prove compliance with basic restrictions.

Yet another strategic acquisition within Europe, compliments the already successful Ajax TOCCO Magnethermic group of companies, providing even better support coverage for users of induction heating processes.
This new acquisition with head offices in Valencia, Spain; demonstrates the groups confidence in, and commitment to Europe's manufacturers.

A little closer to home here in the UK, Ajax TOCCO International Ltd (ATI) operate a complete Induction Service Centre providing comprehensive support on the groups products and also competitors equipment.

ATIs Manufacturing Department, responsible for the design and manufacture of all types of power delivery items including water-cooled power delivery leads, busbars, furnace coils and inductors. Each of the departments staff have undergone specialist training to be able to deliver products of a consistent quality and to meet the customers expectations on delivery and price. The department stocks a large variety of copper tube, refractory and insulation materials ensuring the quickest response to customers needs without compromising quality and longevity of the product.

ATI operate a Field Service Department with UK based engineers who are highly trained to deal with regular preventative maintenance, servicing, and crucially emergency repairs on a variety of makes of equipment.

Critical spare parts are stocked to support our own Field Service Engineers or to allow in-house repairs by the customers own support departments. Ajax TOCCO also promote this self sufficiency by providing tailored training courses for customers own employees; delivered either at your site or at our own Service Centre.

Our in-house Contract Heat-Treatment Department consists of seventeen induction machines operating both day and at night ensure a speedy turn around for customers requiring heat treatment of their own products, from one offs to continuous production through a purpose designed cell. Process verification and control procedures are monitored by our metallurgical and quality staff ensures consistently high standards are sustained and which are supported through our ISO 9001 / 2008 procedures.

Three tempering furnaces contribute to a complete one-stop heat-treatment facility for induction-processed parts.

Huge congratulations to our own Chris Kenward on his recent well deserved award for 'Meritorious Service to the Heat Treatment Industry'.

Chris' achievements were recognised by the Surface Engineering Association and sponsored by Air Products, at their recent awards evening held at the Midland Hotel in Manchester. Chris continues to be influential within the industry and of course here at Ajax TOCCO, where he is a key member of probably the largest and best equipped sub-contract induction heat treatment facility in the UK.

Chris and his team provide a 'round the clock' service with 17 production induction hardening machines operating at a variety of frequencies on a selection of handling systems to cater for one-offs through to continuous production of your products. Electron beam 3d printing of inductor coils and associated items is a new technology that keeps Ajax Tocco and it's sister companies ahead of the competition in it's ability to support induction users with repeatability, accuracy and extended coil life.

GH INDUCTION group launches its new website http://www.3dinductors.com to spread its exclusive technology of 3D printed coils / inductors made of pure copper of which GH is the pioneer worldwide.

This coil additive manufacturing technique is a breakthrough in the history of industrial induction heating technology that is already being deployed in automotive and industrial companies for the great benefits it provides.

Inductors are a critical part in induction heat treatment. They must be replaced from time to time due to natural deterioration, causing interruption to production and consuming many man-hours for process re-verification.

With GH's 3D inductors, the service life of the inductors is increased in an extraordinary way (there are cases up to 4 times longer), the coil spares are geometrically identical, and the designs are optimized for the most efficient performance. This means reduced production costs per part and an improvement in treatment that cannot be achieved with current technology.
