AJT - Determined to trade regardless of Brexit

Dudley based company and experts in Force testing machines, AJT Equipment, “Haven’t given Brexit a thought” and “will deal with issues if they arise.”

Founded in 1951, AJT Equipment is experts in the design, manufacture, calibration, service, repair, upgrade and refurbishment of Test Machines. The company designs both Tensile Test machines and Force Testing Machines to their customers' requirements and as one of the most versatile Test Machine suppliers in the world, they supply and export test machines from Europe to Australia. Dealing with a multitude of industries from oil and gas to lifting and rigging, AJT often faces challenges due to the product requirements and design.

However, regardless of what creeps the company’s way, they are determined to keep a positive attitude and maintain an optimistic outlook. The UK is set to leave the European Union on 31st January, providing the European parliament also give the go-ahead. This means trade deals may change, with the government making it clear that the UK must leave the customs union and single market and end the overall jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice.

The Made in Group sat down with Ian Gordon Managing Director AJT Equipment to talk about how the company has overcome previous hurdles and how they plan to continue with their success no matter what Brexit brings.

Ian told MiG how the company had issues in the past with a long-standing supplier and a customer who decided to move their company to India. The trusted customer took their recently built test machines, produced by AJT Equipment, and their outstanding debt along with them. The Uk based supplier failed to deliver and left AJT with an unnecessary expense to get over. Ian said:

“This caused extreme problems and issues for us but against all odds and advice, we set out the issues one by one and dealt with them.”

“Our experience in overcoming day-to-day design, production and logistical problems came into effect when we dealt with this situation four years ago.”

The confidence to overcome such issues is the same when it comes to Brexit, since Brexit was announced in June 2016 the company has continued to trade without the fear of how it may affect the company in the future after establishing these relationships. Ian said:

“Since the result, we have supplied and exported test machines in France, America, Germany, Romania, Australia, Ghana, Tanzania, Ireland, Holland, Portugal, and Denmark.”

“I believe it is vital to remain positive and optimistic. We will remain this way because there is a good reason why we receive so many overseas enquiries and that is because we supply a great product. This goes for any other company in the UK, if your service, products and company are good then you will still be in demand”

AJT Equipment have established relationships with companies in both Germany and Denmark. Ian mentioned that whilst on a visit to the two countries, as part of the service AJT provides, both were concerned that business may diminish once the UK leaves the EU. However, Ian said the companies are still eager to trade with AJT no matter what Brexit brings:

“As trusted partners, these companies know they will receive the right service from AJT and we have always been very loyal to our customers. Brexit might change dynamics and make it more difficult to get goods in and out but it will just be a new way of working.”

“In my experience, German companies are efficient and cautious therefore I don't think they would be sending through new requests if they were not confident in AJT’s Future.”

As we draw closer to Brexit day, 31st January 2020, Ian plans to carry on business as usual without worries of what Brexit may bring. Once potential problems arise he plans to identify them, categorise them and find solutions one by one. He added:

“In view of this you can spend time, money and resources on preparing for the unknown with a negative attitude or you can concentrate on the business of today with a positive attitude.”

AJT are proud to sponsor Stuart Baker, who from the 7th to the 10th of February 2024 will be taking on the challenge '4 Nations in 4 Days' - cycling over 600 miles between all home nation stadiums in the UK and Ireland, finishing at Twickenham for the England vs Wales game.

This is Stuart's 3rd challenge in support of LooseHeadz, who advocate for tackling the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly in sport. Now, they want to place a mental health lead at every rugby club around the world, and equip them with a toolkit of resources to help #TackleTheStigma. Pedal the Premiership 2022

AJT are very proud to announce our sponsorship of Pedal the Premiership 2022.

The challenge?
4 Cyclists, 13 Premiership rugby clubs, and 1354km in just 7 days.

Stu Baker, John Marshall, Steve Bailey and Harry Hughes will be cycling away the stigma surrounding men’s mental health, raising awareness and vital funds alongside LooseHeadz foundation, this coming May.

Suicide is still the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK.

Each week, 84 men take their own life. For every 1 of those, there are another 20 attempts.

Having lived with depression and anxiety most of his adult life, and attempting suicide following an illness after his retirement from rugby, Stu’s aim is to lower the stigma around male mental health, encourage men to have those conversations, and ultimately reduce the number of suicides and suicide attempts. He hopes that this particular challenge can ‘show that you can be a man mountain on the pitch, delivering big hits for 80 minutes, but still have demons off the pitch’.

The first Pedal the Premiership took place in 2019, raising around £7000 by cycling 988km around 12 clubs over 6 days. The promotion of the Newcastle Falcons adds another ground and an extra 366km to the route for round two! PDP1 saw the likes of Professional Rugby players Jim Hamilton, Shaun Perry and Ollie Hayes, amongst others, joining the lads on parts of the route.

This year, they’ll be cycling with a GPS throughout the event so that we can track their progress, and anyone can drop in on the ride anytime. Former International Rugby stars Will Greenwood, Charlie Hodgson, Neil Back, Shaun Perry, Ollie Hayes and Mike Tindal have already pledged their support, and we hope to see them and more along the ride!

The challenge kicks off on Saturday 14th May at Sandy Park with the Exeter Chiefs, and will conclude in Bristol on Saturday 20th May at the televised game between the Bears and the Chiefs.

Test Machine Tax Relief - Super Deduction

In the Spring 2021 Budget the Chancellor announced 130% Super Deduction for main rate assets in the hopes to kick start the economy and promote a speeding up of business investment following the impact of COVID-19. It’s essentially an enhancement to the existing tax relief already available through capital allowances claimed on new qualifying plant and machinery.

Companies would get a 130% first-year allowance on capital expenditure which would normally be eligible for 18% writing down allowances. Unlike the current annual investment allowance (AIA), the super deduction is uncapped.

The main qualifying terms are:

Purchases made between 1st April 2021 and 1st April 2023 will qualify provided the taxpayer has not entered into the contract to purchase the asset before 31st March 2021
It’s only available to incorporated companies, and only for new plant and machinery, not secondhand or used equipment.

In summary, if you make a qualifying main rate purchase you can claim a 130% first-year allowance on your tax bill. Which means for every pound you invest, your taxes will be cut by 25p. For example, if a company spends £1,000,000 on a new piece of equipment then they can claim a deduction of £1,300,000 against taxable profits.

A Successful First Quarter for AJT Equipment

AJT Equipment have hit the ground running in 2023 with bespoke test machines flying out the door! Our first machine of the year was a 250 Tonne capacity tension and compression rig which enables our customer to calibrate load cells in-house. Last week, we commissioned an 80,000kg horizontal tensile test machine that will perform accurate proof load and destruction load testing whilst recording the data for displacement and load. Finished in the client's colours, this machine will allow sample testing up to 4 metres plus a full 1 metre of hydraulic ram stroke.

Two more machines are due to be finished in March, with another three not far behind. Stay tuned.
