A place for co-creating the future of metalworking

On February 3, 2023, AMADA CO., LTD. (Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, President & CEO: Tsutomu Isobe) opened the “Amada Global Innovation Center” (hereinafter called “AGIC”) at the company Head Office in Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Based on the concept of being a “place for co-creating the future of metalworking” the AGIC was newly established to solve the numerous issues faced by customers around the world, including their demands for “support for new materials and processing technologies”, “improvement of automation and productivity,” and production innovation. The existing “Solution Center” was fully refurbished to create a facility with a total floor space of approximately 30,000 m2 and state-of the-art functions in the largest facility in the industry worldwide.

A diverse range of environments and functions...

AGIC is equipped with a diverse range of environments and functions. This includes the Innovation LABO, which is a laboratory space specifically for customers, and the Innovation SITE, where customers can experience over 90 models of the latest machine and technology products. This location also includes the Engineering FIELD, which utilizes the know-how accumulated by AMADA utilizing the latest IoT systems, and the Area for Creating the Future of Manufacturing with state-of-the-art digital imaging equipment and information devices. Customers using the AGIC will work together with AMADA to explore the future of manufacturing and utilize the facility as a place to create innovation.

Taking on the challenge of future processing technology...

Manufacturing sites in the metal processing market are facing the global trends of “action for a decarbonized society,” “labor force and skilled worker shortages,” and “AI and digital transformation (DX) through the advancement of information technology,” so addressing these issues is an urgent task. AMADA established the new Innovation LABO at the AGIC as the first facility in the industry to contribute to the resolution of these issues, and will be taking on the challenge of future processing technology by verifying the customers’ manufacturing. In nine customer-specific spaces that are always equipped with the latest solutions and advanced inspection equipment, customers can address the various issues they face in their own company by working together with the technical staff of AMADA to verify their processing and matters such as quality requirements there and then.

Experience AMADA’s elemental and latest technology...

“Innovation SITE” has product areas for sheet metal, cutting and structural, and presses, but it is not simply a conventional display of the machines. With the concept of going from “what is possible” to “why it is possible,” the facility enables visitors to experience AMADA’s elemental and latest technology, such as for mechanisms and structures. The aim is to deepen the understanding and satisfaction of the customers by providing them with an experience centered on the technical reasons for why the accuracy is higher than before and why the processing is possible.

An environmentally friendly building...

AGIC was also completely renovated as an environmentally friendly building. Through collaboration with major general contractors and various manufacturers in Japan, the latest air conditioning equipment and lighting was installed, the energy consumption was reduced, and also renewable energy is utilized, including with the large-scale installation of solar power generation. As a result, the CO 2 generation was reduced by half compared to the previous Solution Center. As a machinery manufacturer in the global metal processing market, AMADA intends AGIC to play a central role for its 15 solution centers and technical centers in Japan and overseas. In addition to technology that is the first of its kind in Japan, AMADA will also collaborate with bases around the world to work to create future-oriented manufacturing and innovation, and will disseminate this information to the world.

Amada UK provides over 400 biplane samples for students at Calderdale College

Amada has provided over 400 mild steel biplanes for Calderdale College students to spark interest in engineering during their practical session. The sample included over 30 bends to complete, and while they were simple to bend, they required some thought to complete them in the correct order!

AMADA UK - Remembrance Display for Shell Corner, Halesowen

Following an appeal on social media from Stuart Henley, we at AMADA were happy to step in to help with the material, the laser cutting, welding and painting of the Shell Corner's Remembrance Day display.

Stuart visited Amada with the CAD drawings from EV Designs and the creation of his remembrance profiles became a reality.

AMADA technology supports Broxap’s sustainability ambitions

A £3 million improvement programme is underway at Staffordshire manufacturer Broxap that aims to put sustainability at the heart of the company’s operations. Central to Broxap’s ‘Project Transform’ capital investment programme is a commitment to carbon and energy management, waste reduction, and product lifecycle sustainability. To help fulfil this commitment, Broxap turned to the expertise of sheet-metal processing machinery manufacturer, AMADA. In the past three years, the company has invested in an automated AMADA ENSIS fibre laser cutter and two HRB-series press brakes with automatic tool-change capability.

A family-owned business since 1946...

A third-generation family-owned business founded in 1946, Broxap specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of street furniture such as: outdoor seating; litter and recycling bins; bollards; cycle parking products; shelters, canopies and walkways; and outdoor gym and playground equipment. Certified to ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO45001, what sets Broxap apart is its ability to provide high-quality bespoke solutions for projects large and small at its five-acre site in Chesterton, near Newcastle-under-Lyme. The 220-employee company, which includes the Sunshine Gym and Hand Made Places brands, can also manage developments from start to finish through its Design & Build division.

Put waste in its place

As a conscientious manufacturer, Broxap is keen to demonstrate its sustainability credentials by ensuring that any capital investments make a real difference to waste reduction. Exemplifying this mind-set is the company’s investment in an AMADA ENSIS-3015AJ 3kW fibre laser cutter with AMADA ASF-3015 nine-shelf automated tower system.

In the first instance, investing in the Amada ENSIS automated fibre laser has reduced the need to send products off site for laser cutting and custom fabrication. This shift has led to a significant decrease in the number of vehicle journeys to and from the factory as part of Broxap’s carbon reduction initiative.

Furthermore, fibre laser technology uses around a third less power than CO₂ lasers, while a solid-state laser also produces fewer hazardous fumes and enables speedy high-volume production. Together, these benefits have increased capacity and cut lead times, particularly in the steel litter and recycling bins production facility, which offers a highly popular customisation service.

Broxap Manufacturing Director Matthew Miles says: “The ENSIS easily handles galvanised sheet, mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium with thicknesses ranging from 0.6 to 20 mm. We can process a single component for a bespoke item or run a batch of 200 or more. Laser cutting using compressed air is also a cost-effective feature of the AMADA ENSIS that we make use of to help remain competitive for our clients, which vary from schools, local authorities, retailers, NHS trusts and parish councils, to leading infrastructure services companies, regeneration specialists, construction and civil engineering groups.”

Automate to accumulate

The accompanying automated tower unit supplied with the AMADA ENSIS laser cutter brings a number of additional advantages to Broxap. “Being able to run the machine 24/7 using the automated tower is extremely beneficial to the business in terms of the additional manufacturing capacity it creates,” says Mr Miles. “We make full use of this facility through the night and at weekends.”

The ENSIS laser cutter also features AMADA’s AMNC 3i numerical control with a 21.5” HD touchscreen for simple, intuitive operation that promotes higher productivity. Operators benefit from smartphone-type operation for zooming and one-touch operation for quick machine set-up. “The control unit on the ENSIS laser cutter is easy to navigate and use,” confirms Mr Miles. “Notably, the offline software offers quick and simple nesting, working from CSV files to load component data into the auto-nesting software. Both create a seamless and efficient way of converting DXF files into physical cut parts.”

Investment in new machinery with user-friendly controls supports the development of a multi-skilled workforce as part of Broxap’s sustainable manufacturing strategy. Employee flexibility means production operatives participate in job rotation, moving around the factory’s departments to meet changing customer demand and keep work interesting.

Pressing ahead

Two new press brakes are the most recent AMADA investments at Broxap, bringing the total number of AMADA press brakes on site to five. The latest arrivals are an AMADA HRB-1003ATC (Automatic Tool Change) with 100-tonne capacity, and an HRB-2204ATC offering 220-tonne capacity. AMADA’s HRB-ATC series (available in 1003 and 2204 versions) provides the ideal solution for processing small batch sizes with AFH-ATC tools. Thanks to the integrated ATC and powerful AMADA VPSS 3i Bend offline software, increasingly smaller lots and shorter lead times are no longer a problem for companies such as Broxap.

The ATC provides reduced set-up times, as well as the possibility for operators, with varying experience, to use the machine effectively. These factors again increase on-site capacity, maximising use of space in the factory and boosting output. According to Broxap, these bold investments in AMADA manufacturing technologies not only contribute to the company’s environmental and social priorities, they also improve efficiency, reduce costs, cut waste and support business viability. Factors such as these are critical to a company that operates in sectors such as education, construction, healthcare, transport, housing and hospitality and leisure.

AMADA machines help Q-Laser meet growing demand...

Q-LASER LTD, a precision subcontractor offering laser cutting, bending, waterjet cutting and fabrication services, is investing in the latest manufacturing technologies from AMADA, including a laser cutter, press brake and production monitoring software. The investments are helping to meet growing demand at the company, which has seen a 22% increase in turnover over the past year alone.

Based in Washington, Tyne & Wear, Q-Laser was founded in 2012, primarily providing laser cutting and press brake services on a subcontract basis. The company also has a waterjet cutting facility in nearby Hebburn, with a fabrication shop in Middlesbrough that offers services such as spot, MIG and TIG welding. “We provide our services to a vast array of customers in sectors that include oil and gas, construction, commercial vehicle, defence, telecommunications and general precision engineering,” reports the company’s owner, Colin Hewitt.

On this basis, Q-Laser is performing strongly, turning over £3.4 million in its most recent financial year (ending January 2023), which is 22% up on the previous year. In fact, this ambitious and progressive company says it has recorded year-on-year growth since its foundation, expanding its headcount to 25 people. Furthermore, in 2022 Q-Laser moved to a new facility that doubled its previous floor space.

With so much growth and success, Q-Laser deemed it necessary to invest in additional manufacturing technology, identifying another laser cutter as its top priority. “We needed more cutting hours with the benefit of production flexibility,” reports Mr Hewitt. “Importantly, we recognised the need to keep expanding the business, where a second machine would support the laser cutter already on site. Our customers expect to have their orders processed and delivered within a few days, so it was our duty to try and accommodate that demand.”

Mr Hewitt and his team considered two potential laser cutting machines, ultimately opting for a new AMADA ENSIS-3015AJ 6kW fibre laser. “Not only was the price within our budget, but the technology and features offered, along with the machine’s ease-of-use, made our decision easy,” explains Mr Hewitt.

“It was actually our laser operators that made the final call after visiting and operating the machine at AMADA’s UK headquarters in Kidderminster.”

Describing the installation, commissioning and training period as “well managed”, Mr Hewitt says that his manufacturing team are today using the AMADA ENSIS-AJ to process mild steel (typically 3-25mm thick), galvanised steel (3-5mm), stainless steel (1.5-20mm) and aluminium (3-15mm). The company’s laser-cutting operation is currently running across a single shift, with the aim of achieving two shifts in the near future.

“The AMADA ENSIS-AJ has given us a distinct boost over our existing laser cutter, providing higher speed, better cut quality, greater consistency and more ease-of-use,” says Mr Hewitt. “We particularly like the ability to see the recording/live feed on the laser, which is very beneficial, as is the V-factory monitoring software and some of its options. In addition, our staff like the simple set-up of the laser head, along with the machine’s ease of maintenance.”

The AMADA ENSIS-AJ fibre laser cutting machines offer high-speed piercing and fast cutting, making them ideal for a wide range of materials and thicknesses. Available with 3, 6, 9 and 12kW fibre laser engines developed by AMADA using 3 and 4kW diode modules, the ENSIS-AJ range offers a proven way to increase production capacity. The 6, 9 and 12kW versions utilise AMADA’s Auto Collimation system for unrivalled laser beam spot control. In combination with AMADA’s original Variable Beam Control technology to adjust the laser mode, this system can process different materials and thicknesses with a single cutting lens.

Q-Laser also takes advantage of the AMADA V-factory monitoring system, which makes it possible to maintain an overall picture of production operations, from current machine status to the use of materials, energy consumption and analysis of manufacturing processes. All this through the VCBOX and My Vfactory App, a software application available for PCs and smartphones.

Joining in 1984 as a service engineer on Notchers and Duplicators, Simon moved through the company until he found his lasting forte in machine sales. Amada UK has many staff that have long service but only a few will reach this milestone.

Ryan's path has been varied, as it is for all our apprenticeships, from a year Herefordshire & Worcestershire Group Training Association through Tooling, Refurbishment, Installations and Consultant Engineering which lead him to where he is now in export sales.

Apprenticeships That Challenge

Introducing Dan McCulloch, Dan is in his 2nd year apprenticeship at Amada UK and as part of his development he was challenged to design, cut, bend and help assemble this laser nozzle storage cabinet. By using both VPSS blanking and bending software, the latest Regius Fibre Laser and the HRB Pressbrake in the Technical Centre, it has allowed him to stretch his knowledge within just the first 6 weeks of placement in the Consultant Engineering Department.

Introducing Adam Carless, Adam is another former apprentice who has developed a vast wealth of experience whilst working within the company. Adam joined Amada in 2011 and spent his apprenticeship years at Herefordshire & Worcestershire Group Training Association, consultant engineering, software and the final 2 years with refurbishment. His following years were spent in the field, installing, scheduled servicing and attending breakdowns on machines. His latest role is back at Amada Technical Centre in Consultant Engineering.

Ben is always first to volunteer, embrace any task he is set and has grown in confidence and ability year on year. Amada's level 3 apprentices also study for the HNC in Engineering in years 3 and 4 which is fully supported and funded by Amada. An excellent career as an Amada Engineer lies ahead.

It is with great pride that we inform you of Amada UK's success in receiving two prestigious awards for our apprentice training scheme.

Awarded by our highly accredited apprenticeship training provider, Worcester Group Training Association at a ceremony attended by many commercial, industrial and engineering businesses who also invest in young people.

Apprentice Employer of the Year 2022 - winner Amada UK. Over 200 contenders were considered for this award however Amada UK was recognised for excelling in its commitment and support of apprentices and its inciteful strategic planning for future skills. We were honoured for our faith in apprentices and enhancing their vocational and leadership skills.

Individual Apprentice Employee of the Year 2022 - winner Sam Skelding, Amada UK. Sam was awarded the top prize having exceeded all expectations in his learning both in practical and classroom studies. Sam has demonstrated maturity and is a positive influence and role model for other apprentices. He was selected from over 100 apprentices and we are delighted that an Amada apprentice won such a highly regarded award. "I am really pleases to have won this apprentice award and I'm looking forward to further developing my skills and knowledge within the Amada team here in Kidderminster" - Sam Skelding.

AMADA's Latest In Vision Series: HG-Rm Automated Bending Machine

Welcome to our newest In Vision Series, the HG-Rm automatic bending machine. Designed for applications where bending requires long hours and significant operator effort. Ideal for large or heavy parts or processes which require multiple operators. The solution is based on the top-end HG-1303 range, designed to meet production requirements through a hybrid technology and extremely robust structure. The machine is integrated with a 7-axis robot and a number of smart devices designed to facilitate the bending of complex parts and large panels.

AMADA Blank to Bend Solution

AMADA has always offered a variety of excellent systems for blanking and bending. With the new blank-to-bend concept, AMADA now combines the production of a blank with automatic bending. The linchpin of the concept is the AMADA CSII rack storage system. From there, the raw material is fed into an AMADA punching, combination or laser cutting machine, which generates the blank. Using fast and reliable part sorting with high positional accuracy, the materials are then fed through the storage system to a bending cell with a robot and tool changer.

Thank you to Steve Basford - After 40 Years of Service...

Today sees the end of an era. Steve Basford hangs up his work boots for the last time after clocking up over 40 years of loyal service for Amada UK.

Steve worked his way up from Service Engineer, Central Branch Manger, National Sales Manager to being our Managing Director for 3 years. Steve has willingly given up his time and vast experience to everyone he has met, without exception, both to customers and colleagues.

We wish him a very long and happy retirement. Thank you Steve from us all.
