Charles Boneham, Managing Director at Boneham & Turner, recently spoke on national radio about how UK companies exporting to the US fair under the current candidates. The invite to be featured on the radio is thanks to an article published by Made in the Midlands about Brexit back in 2016.

Boneham & Turner - leading manufacturer and supplier of tooling and precision engineered components in the UK, have featured on 5 Live radio - “Wake up to Money” a few times over the last 4 years due to an article published by Made in the Midlands. In their most recent feature, Managing Director of the firm Charles Boneham spoke to radio presenter Felicity Hannah about the US Election.

Charles, who featured on the 5 Live radio show on 29th October, spoke about his thoughts on how UK companies exporting the UK will fare under the current US candidates, as Boneham itself exports to America. He went on to say that Donald Trump is the favoured candidate due to his support of the manufacturing sector.

Boneham’s national brand exposure on the radio derived from an article published in 2016 which also stated Charles’ thoughts around the Brexit and US election taking place at the time, talking about what it means to the business to be featured on the radio again, Charles said:

“It is great that we have the opportunity to tell our story of being a business that is over 100 years old that exports globally, on a variety of platforms.

Brand exposure from Made in the Midlands through PR and other platforms is great for getting the message out there. The way they connect manufacturers and champion British manufacturing is very beneficial for the UK industry.”

Boneham & Turner prepares for centenary celebrations

It’s not often that a Made in the Midlands member reaches its centenary so when one does then it’s a real cause for celebration.

The firm notching up its hundredth year in business is aerospace and motorsports components manufacturer Boneham & Turner.

The Sutton-in-Ashfield company has pulled out all the stops for the celebration on Friday, including a visit by leading figures from the world of Formula 1.

Guests attending the event will be ferried from the Mour hotel by coach and given a factory tour before being invited to participate in an exclusive networking event.

Keynote speakers at the event include former Grands Prix winner turned Sky commentator, Johnny Herbert and former McLaren F1 pit crew member, now an F1 pundit, Marc Priestley.

Speakers from the manufacturing industry include: Nicholas Linney, of the Linney Group, Mick Chef, of Rocky Mountain Twist Drill, Lee Hopley, Chief Economist of the EEF, Claudio Durante, of SFC Koenig, and David Fagen, Regional Manager of the EEF.

The event is being hosted by Charles and Peter Boneham, with Master of Ceremonies for the evening celebrations being Mark Goldby.

In addition, there will be a special History of Boneham & Turner Exhibition, charting the development of the company during the past 100 years together its various landmarks.

There will also be an Industry Products and Services exhibition, with industry case studies from leading composite and tooling companies.

Charles Boneham said: “We are really looking forward to the event and welcoming so many visitors to Boneham & Turner, many of who have played a key role in our success.

“It should be quite an occasion.”

Made in the Midlands latest Breakfast Networking event took place in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire to mark our second event of the year within the East Midlands region.

Boneham & Turner Ltd is a leading manufacturer and supplier of tooling components and precision engineered components in the UK. The company pride themselves on reacting to customer requirements, maintaining imperial and metric stocks of over 350,000 Jig and Drill Bushes and over 1.3million Dowel Pins as one of the UKs largest stockist of the aforementioned products.

There were 60 second presentations from all of the attendees, who were provided with a selection of food and drinks. Boneham & Turners event was well-received on social media, as Minster Micro tweeted: Great hospitality this morning @BonehamTurner @madeinthemids breakfast event, with a really interesting factory tour as well to finish! FBC Manby Bowdler added: Great morning networking @BonehamTurner . What a place! Thanks for the hospitality.

The event saw 50 attendees register for Boneham & Turners event, which made it the most popular networking event Made in the Midlands has ever hosted in the region. Managing Director of Boneham & Turner, Charles Boneham stated: If you can get 50 people through the door and you can do a presentation to 50 people and show 50 people around the shop floor then that is really great. Everybody seemed genuinely interested in what we did as a company, so Im really pleased with that.

Made in the Midlands Breakfast Networking events provide members with a fantastic opportunity to attend a local manufacturing company to discuss potential collaborations or future business ideas. Charles advised: Id recommend anybody doing it, if you have the opportunity to do it. We would gladly host one again. I think these events are really good at getting people through the doors. Boneham & Turner helps those fighting COVID-19

Midlands-based manufacturer Boneham & Turner has produced essential components needed for the assembly of ventilators, after being requested by Rolls-Royce.

Boneham & Turner Ltd is a leading manufacturer and supplier of tooling components and precision engineered components in the UK.

In order to fulfil the order for thousands of plastic and metal components for the central ventilator challenge, Boneham and Turner ran two shifts per day for a week. Charles Boneham, Managing Director of Boneham & Turner, told The Made in Group how the work came about:

“I received a Linkedin message early afternoon Saturday 28th March, where I was asked to telephone Shaun Higginbotham at Rolls Royce, he explained that 8,000 ventilators had to be manufactured urgently and they desperately needed engineering companies to assist, without hesitation I agreed to help any way I could.

Within the hour on that Saturday afternoon drawings were sent through and we looked at the vast number of parts which needed machining within the week.

That Sunday morning we had assembled a team to programme the drawings on to the machines, to get the parts estimated and to put a quotation for Rolls Royce. Rolls Royce gave us the go-ahead and the parts were ready to go for the first batch Sunday evening”

The parts produced by Boneham will be used to assemble the ventilators at GKN in the Isle of White and Bristol, which will then be used in major hospitals up and down the country. Talking about how it felt to be part of the central effort to produce ventilators, Charles said:

“At the end of it all, we all had a fantastic sense of achievement and great teamwork. I would like to offer my Thanks to the team at Rolls Royce for involving us and who worked tirelessly, putting in long hours on the challenging project for weeks.”

Other than the work for ventilators, Boneham is still open to supporting new and existing customers. They are also wanting to diversify their business into new markets such as medical and are looking at investing in new machinery to do this.

Boneham report optimism on Trump from US manufacturers

Boneham & Turner Ltd, have received optimistic responses from their customer base in the USA. The manufacturing industries in the USA are feeling positive and set to thrive on the eve of the US president elects inauguration.

Boneham & Turner Ltd has been supplying Drill Bushes, dowel Pins and other engineered parts into the US Aerospace and Automotive markets through its subsidiary Boneham Metal Products Inc., in New Jersey since the early 1970s.

The Boneham Group of companies have established good, long standing business relationships across the USA, and since the result of the election, business partners and friends in the US have given us their view on the election:

Mat Curry, California, who supplies a wide range of cutting tools into the manufacturing industries in California, with customers such as SpaceX and ADI (Aerospace Dynamics International) told us: When the UK left the European Union I knew it was time for a change here in the US as well. A lot of people did not think Trump had a chance mostly because of our Liberal Media. Just like the good old days, what the UK does the US is not far behind.

"The US manufacturing segment is elated with Trump at the helm. The mood is more positive then I have seen since the Reagan Era. Make America Great Again! Trump can, and will do it. Here in the US we are very emotional people when it comes to our economy. The emotion is positive jobs are being saved from Mexico, China, and others. It is time for the UK and US to join forces on a greater level. Keep jobs in our countries and start looking at the world economy to benefit all of us.

Mick Cheff, President of Rocky Mountain Twist, in Ronan Montana, which employs over 200 people and specialises in the manufacture of high performance drills and cutting tools for the Aerospace industry, told us he voted for Trump Because the number of people in the workforce in the USA is less than 8 years ago, the median household income is less than 8 years ago, the regulations being pushed on manufacturing in this country is killing us, the Affordable care act has driven medical and insurance costs up by double or greater, and we want stronger borders protecting our way of life.

Mick added, when asked about the manufacturing industry, we will be more competitive, more manufacturing in the US, will drive the demand for cutting tools .

He (Trump) has already started by getting rid of many of the mundane regulations stifling growth and driving cost up. He also is actively pushing to keep jobs here in the US that will give our economy a boost and create more tax paying Americans.

When asked how he felt about trading with other western countries such as the UK, Mick replied: "If he (Trump) can get China to quit devaluing their money and start playing on a fairer field we will be able to be competitive to trade with each other, and not be forced to look at low cost from China.

David Browne, who is the President of a manufacturers representative company who supplies a range of tooling components into the manufacturing industries around Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky said; First and foremost, I voted for Trump because I felt our government needed change; career politicians have been running our country for way too long. I was ready for a business man to give it a try (much like we elected hundreds of years ago) Already, I feel the mood of business has improved.

"I believe a Trump presidency will encourage manufacturing in our territory to start spending money on capital expenses like new machinery. If he can work with our Congress to lower the corporate tax rates that will encourage even more investment.

"If the perception of a Trump presidency is an expanding economy then manufacturing industries such as Aerospace, Automotive and Medical, will be more willing to spend money. I believe our Defence industries will also grow nicely under a President Trump; I believe he has a solid respect for a strong military.

"Improving our manufacturing base in this country can only help our trade relationships with the UK as well as the rest of Europe. I'm not so sure our trading partners in Asia will fare as well.

Chris Beavers, with his father, run a manufacturers representative company, covering the central states; including Kansas and Missouri, supplying a range of cutting tool and tooling components into the Aerospace industry; with the end users being Spirit, Cessna, Lear jet, and Beechcraft.

Chris voted for Donald Trump: "Because I want my child to have the same opportunities I've had in making a good living and providing for my family. Manufacturing has been such a vital component to our economy since WWII, it's what made America as strong as it is.

"A worker can make a much better living in manufacturing than he or she could in the service industry. I'm tired of watching my friends lose their jobs to Mexico and China. I've seen multiple automotive plants in Indiana leave for Mexico. For every manufacturing job you create, you also create 3 to 6 other jobs who support that facility, such as, suppliers and contractors.

"Donald Trump has made it a priority to create more manufacturing jobs in the United States and wants to do business with those countries who play by the same rules when it comes to regulations. Leaving the EU, for Britain, will help our trade relationship, it will allow for Britain to negotiate its own trade deals with other countries outside the EU. Trump has promoted such a deal with the US and Britain. It will also be good for manufacturing in both countries.

Dan Yerian is a manufacturers representative operating in Dallas and Texas. Dan supplies a range of cutting tools and engineered parts into the manufacturing industries in Texas. A lot of the parts that Dan supplies go into the Aerospace industry such as Lockheed Martin and the oil and gas industry.

I voted for Trump for a couple of reasons. First, America needs someone with business acumen to run the largest business in the world, the USA. There has been so much corruption and mishandling of our business that it is now time to get USA back on course. What better way than having a true businessman instead of career politicians that have no practical business sense! Just watch the next 100 days and you will see what I mean. I can't wait for his inauguration.

"He (Trump) will help my territory which is heavy in the Aerospace and Energy business. He is wanting to get our military strength back, which will obviously be good for all kinds of military spending. He is very pro Energy and that will only help with the depressed energy business we have now. The pipeline from Canada to Houston will be a boom in business.

"We don't have a lot of automotive business here other than assembly. Many other areas will benefit more than us. Trump is pro UK and as long as we all get along, I think that it will benefit UK as well as the USA. I believe it should be a bright future between our countries.

Whatever the opinion on the Trump presidency from outside the US, it certainly seems to have rejuvenated the optimism within the manufacturing sector. Where there is optimism and positivity, there is opportunity.

For this instalment of Made in Group’s “The Editor’s Pick”, hosted on Wednesday 1st September at 12pm, Boneham & Turner Managing Director Charles Boneham was selected as the guest editor.

Charles sat down with Liz Smith (Managing Director at LG Davis), Aidan Turnbull (Chief of Staff at Prima Electronic Services), Bernard Bagley (Head of Robot Sales at KUKA UK & Ireland) AND William Davis-Hill (Group Apprenticeship Manager at Bri-Stor Systems) to discuss their latest news stories.

Charles kicked off the live segment, which is streamed across all Made in Group social channels every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month to the group’s 30K+ followers, by introducing himself and the event’s guests.

As Editor, Charles had the opportunity to select 3 recent featured articles from the Made in the Midlands platform and spoke directly with the members who published them.

The Potential for Growth and Job Creation Through Automation

First up was Bernard, KUKA, to discuss their article “KUKA: Our commitment to British and Irish manufacturing”. Charles asked “Why is Britain and Ireland such an important market for KUKA Robotics?”

Bernard emphasised that for KUKA, there’s great potential for further growth in the UK and Ireland. The decision to pursue growth in Ireland in particular was taken way back in 2007, with KUKA growing year on year, something which Bernard can “only see continuing”.

The real key here is the advent of easy to program robotics coming onto the market in 2010, which has opened up more opportunities for growth for the likes of SMEs, said Bernard.

“Over the next decade, do you think robots will help create or cut jobs in the UK?” asked Charles. In response to this, Bernard suggested that automation would actually create jobs. Bernard’s reasons behind this largely lied in that automation allows for businesses to thrive and grow - and therefore have more resources for creating jobs - a point which Charles agreed with.

The Importance of Closing the Skill Gap for UK Industry

William Davis-Hill was next to speak to Charles, regarding the article “Bri-Stor Group launches higher apprenticeship scheme in bid to increase 500-strong workforce”.

The 500-strong group, which is based in Hixon near Stafford, has taken on at least 13 engineering apprentices every year for the last 11 years. Now it is looking to expand the scheme with the recruitment of a number of higher, Level 3 and 4 apprentices across a variety of roles.

However, William quickly highlighted to Charles that, this year alone, the group have actually taken on 23 apprentices. A large motivation for this is a strong desire to close the skill gap which exists in the market, which for William partly lies in that not enough young people are encouraged through the education system to go into engineering, for one reason or another.

“It is essential that we take on apprentices to future proof the business” said William, which Bri-Stor are doing in a variety of job roles, including marketing, IT, sales and more.

Ultimately, William highlighted that - with his business having seen all of their current MDs come through an apprentice scheme - “Apprenticeships really know no bounds!”

The Secret Behind 6 Decades of Longevity

Liz Smith, MD from LG Davis, next spoke to Charles regarding their article titled “Birmingham printing specialist expands its reach as it acquires local firm to add to its portfolio”.

Liz’s company has recently looked to further expand into the commercial print and office world with the acquisition of local printers Positive Print, in Kings Norton. Liz highlighted to Charles that, this acquisition will bring many benefits for the company, including the potential for increased capability, expanded regional customer base across Midlands and beyond, and 2 new experienced members of staff having recently been brought in.

With LG Davis having operated for over 6 decades, Charles was keen to find out what best practices have led to this longevity at the company? Liz emphasised that this success came through a variety of things, including: putting customers first, looking to provide bespoke solutions (not just a “one stop solution”), the strong desire to be innovative and not being content to stand still.

Liz also highlighted that the company’s diverse customer base over these years has helped greatly, as it allows them to hone their skills whilst also developing new ones. For example, the company has worked with the NHS for over 20 years, and is now the preferred suppliers to many trusts across the country.

The Value of Self-Discipline and Courage

Finally, Aidan Turnbull spoke with Charles regarding the article titled “Prima awarded Silver in the UK Defence Employer Recognition Scheme”.

Prima Electronic Services Ltd has been recently awarded Silver in the UK Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, which demonstrates their commitment to the Armed Forces.

Prima ultimately recognises the importance of supporting our Reservists, providing the time and space they require while cultivating the valuable transferable skills our Veterans bring to the business. The company's aim is said to be to further develop our support to the Armed Forces by strengthening links to the various regional networks through their Armed Forces Champion.

As someone who has served in the armed forced for many years himself, Aidan was candid in revealing how he did feel some fear when leaving in that he may not possess all of the vocational skills needed to succeed in business. However, Aidan emphasised that he believes many of the skills he has learned has standed him in a great position for thriving within the business world, for example the likes of self-discipline and courage.

The latest Made in the Midlands breakfast event was hosted by Boneham & Turner at their premises in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.

Boneham & Turners event attracted over 55 representatives of the Midlands manufacturing community to eclipse their attendance record last year, as Managing Director, Charles Boneham stated: I think it's been very successful, it was a good turnout, as we had a higher number than last time. A lot of people from manufacturing companies have seemed very interested, so it was a good networking event and everybody enjoyed it.

Made in the Midlands breakfast events aim to facilitate networking and business opportunities between MDs and CEOs of local manufacturing companies, as Charles added: I think networking is really important. I think in the UK, not enough companies go out and talk to each other. The UK misses out a lot because we dont do enough networking. We dont go out and get to know each other. I think it's really important, as business is all about communication.

Overseas, Boneham & Turner's reputation has become well known and the Companys products are being used in most, if not all Continents of the world. A subsidiary company in the USA, Boneham Metal Products has distributors across all states, operating out of New Jersey.

Charles has previously appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live to discuss Donald Trump being announced as the President of the United States, due to their contacts within their subsidiary company and most recently to also discuss Brexit.

The chair of Made in the Midlands’ International Trade Advisory Board, Charles Boneham has invited MIM members to visit the Boneham & Turner stand at the Advanced Engineering 2018 trade show, taking place at the NEC.

The show, which takes place between October 31 and November 1, is one of the largest gatherings in the country of OEMs and engineering supply chain specialists.

This year’s show, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary, features more than 600 exhibitors, with presentations from OEMs, supply chain firms and government representatives.

There will be sectors dedicated to Aerospace, Composites, Automotive, Performance Metals, Digitalisation and Connectivity, and Nuclear Engineering.

Charles said: “It’s always an interesting show and it would be great to see as many Made in the Midlands members there as possible.

“It’s a good opportunity for some networking with some great firms so if members are going we’d be happy to see them on our stand.”

Toolmaker of 58 Years Shares His Story Working in Manufacturing

Having manufactured in the UK for 103 years, Boneham & Turner are fortunate to have both long-serving members of the team and apprentices. That’s why the company thought it would be interesting to hear from a long-standing employee, of 58 years, Micheal Northing who is a Shim Section Chargehand and Toolmaker.

A day in the life as Micheal

Michael commences by overcoming manufacturing challenges from the previous day, often providing solutions to difficult tooling concepts. He then reviews the production schedule to ensure priorities are worked on in-order and any previous open production orders are completed. Michael guides the rest of the team on any production challenges or techniques required.

Why Micheal believes people should work in Manufacturing

Michael absolutely relishes the challenge presented by engineering puzzles. After all these years he still feels immense satisfaction when a product has gone from drawing to reality under his team, safe in the knowledge that the customer couldn’t get a better-quality product anywhere else.

What skills do you need?

Michael believes you need a good understanding of mathematics, have the ability to work with your hands, communicate effectively with a team, both in terms of technicality and idea generation, and lastly patience, not everyone grasps first time what you have explained or interprets instructions the same way.

International Trade chair delivers his verdict on the Budget

The chair of Made in the Midlands’ International Trade Advisory Board has delivered his verdict on Philip Hammond’s latest Budget and the steps announced to improve the UK’s overseas trade potential post-Brexit.

Charles Boneham, Managing Director of Boneham & Turner said while more could have been done, the measures outlined in the Budget were at least a step in the right direction.

He said the commitment announced by the Chancellor to provide additional fixed rate finance to overseas buyers choosing British goods and services was a positive move.

Under the new arrangements, UK Export Finance (UKEF) will see a one-off increase to its Direct Lending Facility of up to £2bn over 2020-21 and 2021-22.

“This looks like a good thing. It’s good for industries such as aerospace and defence as it’s more of an incentive to invest in British industries,” said Charles.

To help attract inward investment, the government will strengthen its investment links with global partners, including becoming a European Partner to the Institutional Investor Roundtable, which is tasked with bringing together leading global investment fund.

Also, in an attempt to bolster trade with Europe once the UK leaves the EU, the Chancellor has said that the Department for International Trade will expand its network of advisers in Europe.

In a clear indication of the UK’s desire to generate stronger links with countries outside the EU, Philip Hammond said that measures would be put in place to enhance the UK’s border experience for travellers from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

From next year, visitors from these countries will be able to use the e-passport gates at UK entry points in a move that will significantly improve the flow of passengers at busy airports such as Heathrow.

The government said businesses would also become customs-trusted traders (including ‘Authorised Economic Operator’) in half the time it currently takes. HMRC is expected to implement the improvements within two years.

“This is also a positive step,” said Charles. “Something like 85% of the global economy lies outside the EU and the countries named here represent a large chunk of that. So, easing access into the UK for these people will be vital as we look to boost investment.

“I would have gone even further and added India to the list of countries. There’s a lot of high-end manufacturers in the sub-continent and it’s got a lot of young, highly-educated and talented entrepreneurs that we should be looking to work with.”
