We have an ITP Moving Beam CMM machine for sale if anyone is interested. It is fully CNC programmable, has a pipe measuring module and the ability to compare measured parts to CAD models. The granite table is removable increasing flexibility. The measuring volume is 2.4M * 1.4M * 1.0M. It is in good condition and has not been used much as our core business is 3D Scanning / 3D Printing / Reverse Engineering and Inspection and hence the CMM has become surplus to our requirements.

This also involves investing in new members of staff to help with the work load and help us achieve the best results as a team. Our latest addition to the Central Scanning team is Alex Chung. Having been here a month we thought we would ask him a few questions about his role within the company and how he has been finding it so far!

Tell us a bit about yourself Alex

I'm 30 years "young" and aside from 3D technologies, I like going to gigs, playing guitar and travelling. I also managed to complete the previous two Birmingham half marathons and fingers crossed in completing the 'hat trick' this year also!

What made you interested in engineering - in particular 3D Scanning & Digitizing?

Growing up I always enjoyed creative problem solving and engineering seemed to compliment this. I played with 3D CAD from an early age with packages like TrueSpace, Photoshop and AutoCAD creating digital artwork and product designs. I first came into contact with 3D printing during my postgraduate studies with the old Z corp and RepRap printers and eventually with 3D scanners during my working career. I'm always excited at what practical applications 3D technologies like augmented reality and virtual reality will play in designing and making things in the future.

What experience have you had within this Industry previous to this role?

Before Central Scanning I had spent over five years at Delcam developing, marketing and supporting CADCAM software and hardware scanning solutions into the footwear, dental and orthotics markets. I also have experiences working in the railway industry and academia.

On your search for a job what made you apply at Central Scanning?

It was a chance to take what I had learned about 3D scanning and printing to the next stage and add some of my product development and technical marketing experience to Central Scanning to enhance their USPs and added value.

Whats the most interesting thing you have worked on so far?

Working with the ZEISS T-Scan LV system to scan a carbon fibre blade was certainly interesting with the scanner, probe and tracker. Also creating an automated script with the Comet 6 with the dual axis and Colin3D was enjoyable.

Central Scanning produces thousands of face visors for frontline workers

Made in the Midlands (MIM) member Central Scanning have been working around the clock to produce vital PPE for frontline workers. So far, the manufacturer has sold and donated 6,500 face visors to local doctors surgeries and care homes.

Central Scanning offers a variety of 3D Scanning and 3D Printing Services and are UK resellers for all 3D Scanning products offered by Artec 3D and Zeiss. Located in the Midlands, they are able to offer product demonstrations and services across the UK and Ireland.

Bromsgrove based manufacturer, Central Scanning, has used their 3D printing and injection mold capabilities to produce vital PPE for those working on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic. Injection molding has allowed them to produce 6,000 visors within two to three weeks, with 500 from their 3D printer.

Another MIM member Stephens Gaskets helped produce the visors by providing Central Scanning with the clear plastic for the visors.

Nick Godfrey, Managing Director at Central Scanning, decided to invest in the injection moulding tool to produce visors more quickly. Talking about how the work came about, Nick said:

“We realised there was a need for visors very quickly and started producing for our local doctors and a few care homes. We were then contacted by Tri-Tech 3D who were trying to source manufacturers for visors and we wanted to help out. We started working on them straight away to enable the joint volume to be increased significantly whilst we had the injection moulding made too”

The firm plans to continue to produce the visors for as long as there is demand. Nick added:

“People have been really pleased with the visors and how they work, especially as some of the care homes we delivered to as they had very limited PPE provided. Once we have recovered from the cost of the visor tooling, we plan to donate more.”

In addition to supporting frontline workers, Central Scanning is also still open to supporting customers and new inquiries. They are also producing adapter valves for decathlon type masks used by surgeons. This will allow them to breathe in clean air when helping COVID-19 patients.

Yaminations Studio Launch 21-05-2015

Yamination Studios is an animation studio situated in Digbeth Birmingham, West Midlands, specialising in stop-motion/frame animation, but also covering other forms. The studio offers additional aspects of production and design from character/set/prop design, illustration, storyboarding, scriptwriting, to character/set/prop construction and editing.

Central Scanning have been supporting this amazing company, by doing some 3D Scans of one of their character's Bart, and then printing them out with our Objet Eden 500V printer.

We were kindly invited to the official opening of the NEW studio in Digbeth last night. The Central Scanning team took the Artec range of scanners, and did some live body scans at the launch party.

We have loved working with Drew and the team at Yamination Studios, and are excited to see the new and upcoming short films they are making.

Challenge: With thousands of miles of aging railroad tracks to check on a regular basis, railroad inspectors are busier than ever. Only so much track can be visually inspected in a single day. The trouble is, even if more obvious defects are found, tiny fractures, metal fatigue, as well as dimensional and positional changes can go unnoticed, expanding to the point of failure before the next scheduled inspection arrives. Because of this, rail inspectors are turning to a unique 3D scanner to help solve the problem.

Solution: Artec Leo, Artec Studio, Geomagic Control X

Results: By using the Artec Leo 3D scanner, a rail inspector can digitally capture and document entire sections of railroad tracks, including ties and ballast, in minutes. Since the scans are in submillimeter color 3D, even tiny surface defects and irregularities will be revealed. And repeated scans over a period of time can track any larger structural changes taking place, such as track gauge spread. Railway accidents can also be documented, with the resulting 3D scans used for reconstructing the event and analyzing the damage.

It was late one California midsummer night when a Southern Pacific train winding its way along a sharp curve derailed and sent one engine and seven tanker cars plunging over the side of a trestle.

One of the tankers landed upside down in the middle of the Sacramento River, where it began leaking metam sodium, a highly toxic, water-soluble pesticide.

It took hazmat specialists six hours to show up, and another six hours to determine that all 19,000 gallons of the sulfurous insecticide had already gushed out into the once-pristine waters of the river, killing countless thousands of salmon, trout, and all other signs of aquatic life, down to the algae.

In the hours and days to follow, hundreds of local residents along the river were rushed to hospitals with serious skin, eye, and respiratory disorders, as the spill’s poisonous green plume reached as far south as Lake Shasta.

The impacts were severe: aside from the immediate environmental devastation, there were millions of dollars in damages and untold losses to the local tourist industry for months and years to follow.

Train derailments: a worldwide threat

Every year, thousands of train derailments occur around the globe. While most take place without fatalities or ecological destruction, the repercussions from any property and infrastructure damage, as well as disruptions in service, can resonate throughout a rail company even decades later.

The great majority of derailments are triggered by track defects such as broken rails. Other causes can be “gauge slippage,” track misalignments, broken switches and wheels, etc. In many countries, government regulations require quarterly or even monthly in-person inspections of every section of track across a company’s rail lines.

With more than 160,000 miles of track in the US alone, inspecting our railways is a formidable task.

Many of these railroad companies have deployed automated, high-speed ultrasonic inspection solutions for detecting rail fractures and other anomalies and defects. These have proven to be excellent when there are thousands of kilometers of track in need of inspection on a regular basis.

From high-speed to in-person rail inspections

Then, when a questionable section of track is discovered, a railroad inspector can be dispatched to this location for an up-close and in-depth visual inspection.

But there are limits to how much track an inspector can visit and reliably examine during a single shift. Not only that, but when surface defects are encountered, they may or may not be detected, depending upon how visually conspicuous they are.

Often enough, tiny fractures, metal fatigue, as well as dimensional and positional changes can go unnoticed, expanding to the point of failure before the next scheduled inspection arrives.

Additionally, visual inspections can be challenging from a documentation perspective, with each inspector subjectively deciding whether or not a rail component or section of track should be checked out.

If not, then no quantifiable measurements from that moment in time will be available, leaving a potentially risky blind spot in the safety inspection records.

Where 3D scanning enters the scene

For this reason, more and more rail inspectors have begun turning to professional handheld 3D scanners as a solution to fill the gap in a cost-effective and timely manner.

But for many rail inspectors, the benefits of such devices are diminished by the idea of having to carry with them not only the scanner, but also a laptop, as well as a power pack and cables.

Taking a cue from quality control specialists, rail inspectors are discovering the Artec Leo as an ideal addition to their visual inspection toolbox. Like ultrasonic rail inspection systems, Leo is a nondestructive testing (NDT) solution.

Such analyses will not only determine whether tolerances have been exceeded, or are on the verge of doing so, but also help ascertain whether the cause may lie elsewhere.

For example, if the gauge (width) of the tracks begins to surpass acceptable tolerances over a period of months, it could likely be due to insufficient depth or drainage of the underlying track ballast.

When disaster strikes: how Leo helps reconstruct railway incidents

3D scanning for reverse engineering legacy railway components in-house

In recent weeks Zeiss have released the Comet L3D 2. This is a new ultra-compact portable 3D Sensor offering excellent data quality, precise measurement results and flexibility making it ideal for Central Scanning service work in a variety of 3D Scanning applications.

The Comet L3D 2 has been designed at half the size of its predecessor the Comet L3D making it more compact and lightweight allowing for ease of handling and transportation to and from, and around site.

Using the latest sensor technology, it features a decreased measurement time of one second enabling very quick scanning whilst producing high quality measurement data. It also features simple on-site calibration enabling the user to change the measuring field with a quick and easy lens change.

The Comet L3D 2 also features the ability to recognise change in exposure and vibration with temperature management included, which greatly reduces the warm up time.

This new Blue Light Fringe projection scanner offers excellent data quality and accurate measuring results quickly and easily, making it ideal for demanding applications such as quality inspection, reverse engineering, rapid manufacturing and more.

Central Scanning are keen to continue supporting and growing skills throughout the manufacturing industry. Due to increase in work load, we invested in a new Trainee Applications Engineer. Tom has now been with us a month, so we thought wed ask him a few questions about his role at Central Scanning and how hes finding it so far!

Tell us a bit about yourself Tom...

Im an 18 year old student living in Bromsgrove with my parents. I am currently attending HOW College in Bromsgrove two days a week, and then working at Central Scanning the rest of the week.

What made you interested in engineering then? In particular 3D Scanning & Digitisation?

I like the idea of being able to take a physical object, scan it in virtually and then model it, modify it or 3D print it. This is the part that interests me the most! There are so many different aspects to Engineering that I wasnt even aware of.

You currently study at Bromsgrove NEW College. What course is it that youre studying?

I study interactive Media & Games Design. The course covers a wide range of modules some of which focus on: Web Design, App Design/Development, 3D Modelling and 3D Rendering.

Working with 3D Software at college gave me a good foundation knowledge before starting at Central Scanning, so it helped me a lot to understand 3D Data in general.

One project I recently completed for college prior to starting at Central Scanning was a short work based learning project. I had to design an annex for a building, model it and then render it. From there I created a walk through and presented it to a company and my tutors. I particularly enjoyed this project as it was very much independent designing and problem solving.

On your search for a trainee role, what made you apply at Central Scanning?

It was a local company, which helped! I also liked the fact that they were a relatively small team, which I was used to from my old job. From doing my research on their website, I could see that they didnt just focus on one industry sector, but worked with a wide range of them. This was good for me, as I knew I could get experience for working on a diverse range of projects from Aerospace to Animation. I love 3D printing too- so to find out they had four printers too was a plus!

Whats the most interesting thing youve scanned so far?

One of my first projects was to 3D Scan a Coconut! Strange request for a London based Animation Company. They took the scan data and put it into their Animation Software Maya.

At Central Scanning, Bromsgrove on the 26th April 2012 from 8.00am, we will be having an informal open day at our facility where we will have several 3D scanning systems on display for you to view and discuss with our Applications Engineers and Sales Team.

The main reason for the open day is to introduce the ‘Steinbichler Robotscan System’. Robotscan consists of a Steinbichler Comet 3D scanning system mounted to a robot in a dedicated cell containing air-conditioning, vibration dampening, ambient light control, rotary table etc. The system is accurate, repeatable and can be moved from one location to another offering distinct benefits over conventional robotic scanning solutions. These types of systems are typically used for the inspection of products from plastic parts, turbine blades, engine blocks, castings, complete car bodies etc. Using the new Steinbichler Visio software incorporating collision detection, the systems can be on-line and off- programmed giving immense flexibility.

3D Scanning of Black Materials – Why Is It Difficult?

When it comes to 3D scanning black materials, the complexity can often lead to diminished results when not properly completed. In fact, black and chrome, highly reflective surfaces are deemed the worst for scanning. Blackness, in any case, can be hard to capture, and therefore, can lead to details being lost and an overall outcome that is hard to utilise.

At Central Scanning, we make it our mission to only stock the very best, proven 3D scanner technology. Consequently, giving our customers the answer to their data collection needs. This meticulous technology has transformed the world of collecting data, especially in terms of complex surfaces that other methods cannot adhere to.

WHY ARE BLACK AND HIGHLY REFLECTIVE MATERIALS HARD TO SCAN?

As previously mentioned, black is hard for any camera to see. Due to its sheen, the light given off by a scanner reflects off the surface, usually in an array of wrong directions. This misinforms the scanner, generating high noise and sometimes, making it impossible to see. Therefore, results are left distorted or inconclusive.

The same difficulties can be seen with transparent or other reflective colours. However, for these surface types, we recommend using 3D scanning spray to combat this.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCANNER FOR BLACK MATERIALS

The GOM ATOS Q 3D scanner is the answer to 3D scanning black materials. It scans black with ease using powerful blue light technology combined with an impressive software infrastructure. It only takes a few extra seconds to scan a black surface as opposed to a white, making this a superior 3D scanner.

ATOS Q

The ATOS Q is made with flexibility for complex measurements and inspection tasks for a range of applications. Using interchangeable lenses, you are given precision at a whole new level.

However, this device is only compatible with small to medium-sized parts, something that should be taken into consideration upon purchasing.

This structured light scanner also uses fringe projection, allowing it to intricately scan parts, even on a 3D basis. When utilising the GOM Inspect Software, you can inspect the model, and its tolerances. So, you can ensure that it’s been produced to a high standard.

ZEISS T-SCAN HAWK 2

For a really highly reflective surface such as chrome, we also recommend the Zeiss T-Scan Hawk 2. It is laser based and provides a very high quality scan even with extremely challenging surfaces to capture.

WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED?

When 3D scanning, markers are fantastic for guidance. Reference markers on a rotation table allow the software to triangulate where they are in 3D space, while also triangulating them on the part itself. This means that when the part is in motion on the table, the software understands that it’s rotating, but thinks it’s still.

This enables extreme accuracy as 3D scanning specialists can rotate the part without moving the scanner; identifying all detailing on all surfaces. As we use markers on the side of the part, we can also flip the part once that side is complete. And once you have scans of all sides, you can then align them to very high accuracies.

3D Scanning...reaching new heights!

Artec 3D have recently released the all new Space Spider. Central Scanning Limited being not only official UK Resellers of the 3D Scanners but also using them in service work, were intrigued and wanted to find out more.

About a year ago Artec 3D were contacted by NASA, who wanted a 3D Scanner for the International Space Station. They liked the Spider for its accuracy, compact size and ease of use. However, they had extra requirements...

- Longevity (because of the high price of a possible malfunction when in space)

- Reduction of time it takes to reach normal operational temperatures (because the NASA crew work on tough schedules)

- The scanner being able to retain the highest accuracy regardless of changes in the ambient temperature

Artec took this information in, and after many discussions with the R&D team, improved the Spider and produced the Space Spider! This is how they did it

- A new cooling system was added à the scanners inside temperature fell à because the scanners inner parts heat less, Space Spider should live longer than the original Spider

- The Space Spider takes less time to heat this meaning it can reach the optimal operational temperature faster

- At normal room temperatures the Space Spider retains its operational temperature all the time and the quality of the scans doesnt deteriorate.

So why release it to the rest of the Scanning world? Well, its ideal for those who need maximum accuracy and who use the scanner extensively, on an unpredictable schedule and in changing environmental conditions. The Space Spider would be perfect if you arent able to scan objects in a controlled lab environment (depending on the conditions), and have to go out on site and scan.

GET TO KNOW THE ZEISS T-SCAN HAWK 2

Back in February 2023 HandsOnMetrology launched the all new, game changing ZEISS T-Scan Hawk 2, a lighter, faster, and more accurate hand-held laser 3D scanner. It offers portability and improved volumetric accuracy with Satellite Mode. The scanner features guided workflow, multi-line projection, and precise scanning down to 0.01 millimeters. Central Scanning are reselling the product and are ready to react to any demo requests.

The T-Scan Hawk 2 is the ideal 3d scanner for maintenance, quality control, design, and various industries.

HandsOnMetrology officially launched the next generation of the ZEISS T-Scan Hawk hand-held laser 3D scanner on the 31st of January 2023. A series of two webinars covered the new product and its features and benefits.

With a ‘Take It and Make It’ attitude, the ZEISS T-Scan Hawk 2 promises lighter, faster and more accurate hardware. It was designed for ease of use and travels around in one case, allowing you to scan anytime anywhere.

HandsOnMetrology also boasts that the T-scan Hawk 2 will be the first portable hand-held 3D scanner to use Satellite Mode. This will see the volumetric accuracy and definition improve at larger scales.

Midlands Companies- Delivering the Competitive Edge!

Cube Precision Engineering have taken advantage of the latest technologies at Central Scanning to help deliver the competitive edge in the press tooling market.

Using new technology from us here at Central Scanning Ltd, Cube Precision (fellow Made in the Midlands Member) have procured 3D printed parts of potential components they wish to win the business to make tools for.

MD Neil Clifton We were completely unaware that Central Scanning had the facility to print out custom 3D parts, at the time they were reverse engineering some dies we were refurbishing for a local OEM. We were also a week away from a pivotal meeting with a leading tier 1 automotive supplier, to discuss a sizeable new order. What is often very difficult to convey in such meetings is the complexity of the parts we are being asked to produced the onset of 3D CAD data has certainly helped these kinds of conversations but understanding the size and intricacy of some parts is still difficult to understand.

Nick Godfrey (Central Scanning) continued 3D printing is now becoming more of a mainstream solution for prototype parts and mock-ups but it is the investment in our Stratasys Objet Eden 500V and Fortus 400MC 3D printers which allows us to produce prototype parts in house which allows us to give customers like Cube a precise replica of the CAD data they are sent by their customers

Neil continued, We commissioned the team at Central Scanning to produce both parts that we were due to be discussing at the meeting with our customer a week later. Within 24 hours, we had the component parts in our hands and were able to let the toolmakers, CAD designers and project managers understand the work we were trying to win. Ultimately this led to a much more productive conversation with the customer, allowing us to justify our recommendations on the number of stages in the tool and also adding validity to the price we had quoted, although more expensive than a European competitor the customer subsequently placed the order with us on the back of our greater understanding of the requirement

Nick summed up If our customers are able to compete globally while manufacturing in the UK, it is of benefit for the whole supply chain

SECO event success!

Yesterday saw the close of the Seco Tools 'Advanced Manufacturing Best-Practice Event at the HQ in Alcester. The name for this event was 'Inspiration through Innovation' and it certainly rang true!

As a technical partner Central Scanning Ltd had a stand where they displayed and demonstrated their innovative 3D scanning and printing technology.

They showcased their range of Artec 3D and Steinbichler scanners and gave full briefs as to what each scanner can do and to what successful end.

They also discussed in depth their processes of 3D Scanning and 3D printing and what services they can provide clients in terms of inspection, reverse engineering, rapid prototyping and more!

Central Scanning were approached by a large collection of industry professionals and we hope an inspirational and innovative time was had by all!

ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 Re-Certification!

Central Scanning Limited have recently passed their re-certification of both the ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 accreditation.

ISO 9001:2008 - sets out the requirements of a quality management system

ISO 14001 - internationally accepted standard that outlines how to put an effective environmental management system in place.

The inspection was performed over a few days, and aspects of the business such as key processes, systems and management and an overall look at the organisation was audited.

Having a status as an ISO Accredited company we must ensure to maintain and develop our company with the customer as our main focus and constantly look to improve our processes.

Thanks to everyone and their dedication at Central Scanning for yet again obtaining this great achievement!

Central Scanning Celebrate 10 Years of Trading

WOW - 10 YEARS!

This fall will mark ten years since founder, Nick Godfrey, took the plunge and opened the doors of Central Scanning Ltd.

2006: Where it all began...

Way back in 2006, Nick Godfrey opened the door of Central Scanning Limited and from that point, Central have grown from strength to strength and celebrate a staggering 10 successful years in the 3D scanning and reverse engineering world.

So, what better way to celebrate than to have a look back over some of the most prestigious projects to date?

The Porsche

In 2006, we scanned a 1959 Porsche RS61 for Paul Freeman to manufacture an exact replica. From the data, we worked with the coach builder and created a 3D block for body manufacture.

Laurel & Hardy

In September of 2015 Central Scanning were approached by celebrated Sculptor Graham Ibbeson. And we at Central Scanning had the great pleasure of scanning and 3D Printing his beloved statues of Laurel and Hardy.

Yamination Studios

To ensure that the CG Bart looked as accurate as possible to the puppet version, Yamination studios, based in the West Midlands, specialising in the stop-motion/frame animation decided the best way was to have the 3D Bart scanned and they chose Central.

A Shakespeare Story

April 23rd 2016 marked the 400th Anniversary of the death of one of the UKs most famous writers - William Shakespeare.

In order to celebrate this special anniversary, Shakespeares Schoolroom and Guildhall, in collaboration with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, organised a special project to feature in the newly refurbished building and Central Scanning were involved!

If you happened to attend the RHS Chelsea Flower Show back in 2015 then we have little doubt that you saw the stunning award-winning garden The Evaders Garden.

Midland's Roadshow!

Central Scanning have been busy so far in 2015 road-showing all over the UK, demonstrating and educating about 3D Scanning & 3D Printing systems. The roadshows have covered Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Milton Keynes & Glasgow so far.

After taking a break for the summer months....we will be back on the road in September where we will be in Solihull. The morning event will take place at the St Johns Hotel on the 7th September. Free breakfast is available, and it is a great opportunity to learn more about this innovative technology, and a chance for you to ask the experts any questions you may have.

The increasing demands of the automotive industry standard rely on high-quality measurement technology to check for surface flaws, compare part-to-CAD and reverse engineer various parts to perfection. All of which Central Scanning Limited can do!

The Steinbichler range of scanners that we use here at Central Scanning are well suited for such applications; parts of any sizes and shapes can be accurately digitized many times faster than using conventional tactile systems. The software that comes with our scanners comes with various matching techniques which give the user flexibility to use different fields of view, depending on the part and hassle free matching of the various scans.

Made In The Midlands Exhibition 2014 - Wolverhampton Racecourse

Central Scanning Ltd will be exhibiting at the Made In The Midlands Exhibition on May 22nd at Wolverhampton Racecourse.

Its Made In The Midlands 5th annual clustering of MD's and CEO's of top Midlands manufacturing and engineering firms, there are over 1,000 manufacturers registered to attend and 110 Made in the Midlands firms exhibiting.

At the show we will have our new Surphaser Scanner, a fast and accurate 3D Scanner that is capable of scanning large areas. The scanner gives engineering quality data in a fraction of the time to take a traditional scan. The 3D Scanners

We will also have our Artec Eva and Artec Spider 3D scanners with us too, showing you their capabilities on the stand. From full body scans right down to the intricate details on certain shapes, we can capture it.

3d scanning a complete helicopter in less than 30 minutes...

On 14th September 2023 Central Scanning had the opportunity to scan a Chinnok transport helicopter at RAF Csoford.

Using the Artec Ray II we were very quickly able to capture not only the Chinook but, with its 130m range, we captured the entire hanger!

The scan took around 25 minutes moving the scanner to various positions to get as much coverage as possible without the need for any targets. Scanning at its lowest resolution each scan took around 26 seconds.

Processing to a final mesh was done within Artec Studio and took around 30 minutes once the unwanted data was removed.

Even at its lowest resolution however, small details such the rivets can still be seen.

Warwick Show Success

Central Scanning recently exhibited at the Develop 3D Show Live at Warwick Arts Centre...and what a show it was!

Develop 3D is the UKs leading conference and exhibition celebrating design, engineering and manufacturing technology and how it brings world-leading products to market faster.

The show was full of people from a diverse range of industry backgrounds and there was a series of interesting talks throughout the day by delegates.

It was evident by the buzz in the the Warwick Arts Centre that 3D Technologies are most definitely evolving!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who visited our stand. An enjoyable day had by all, and we will definitely be exhibiting again next year!
