Datalink Electronics, UK specialists in bespoke electronic design, manufacturing and assembly services today announced that it has been awarded the BS13485 quality accreditation for the design and manufacture of Electronic Medical Devices for non-invasive applications. Achieving one of the worlds most demanding quality standards is a significant milestone in the companys strategy to operate effectively and accelerate business in the challenging medical devices market. It also follows a period of significant investment in specialist inspection equipment, a new surface mount production line and bespoke CRM system.

Xenon Delivery System for Cardiac-Arrest Patients

Datalink Electronics has been appointed by NeuroproteXeon, a US-based company, to develop and manufacture an FDA-approved Electronic Control and Monitoringsystem for the delivery of Xenon to adult patients, worldwide.

Datalink is an award winning, ISO13485 accredited, contract design and manufacturing company, experienced in numerous industries in particular life science, medical devices, and scientific instrumentation.

NeuroproteXeon is a late clinical-stage pharmaceutical company developing proprietary use of Xenon gas, delivered via a patented inhalation device, to protect against brain cell death following acute neurologic injury. The system developed by Datalink will be used to deliver an analgesic dosage of Xenon to the adult cardiac arrest patients in and out of hospital.

The very high cost of Xenon gas poses a significant engineering challenge on the application of this method. Datalinks design team with a proven track record in gas delivery and respiratory monitoring systems, specifically those with Xenon gas mixture, has been in an ideal place to undertake this development.

Success for Datalink at Innovation Day

Datalink Electronics had a night to remember at the prestigious Medilink East Midlands Awards Night at the Nottingham Belfry Hotel. They won the awards for both Innovation and Export Achievement and were runners-up in the Outstanding Achievement category.

The awards recognize the work that Datalink Electronics has put in to establish an outstanding electronics design & manufacturing capability in the East Midlands. This capability is now being used to help our customers through the complex technological, regulatory and legal challenges involved in developing novel products and selling these products in volume, worldwide. Datalink attending UKTI event ‘Building Bridges to Export’

Dr Jim Allen, Technical Director of Datalink Electronics will be talking about his export experiences, lessons learnt, and provide useful tips on exporting.

Dr Jim Allen of Datalink Electonics will be sharing his knowledge of export markets. Datalink Electronics design creative, high technology electronic products for a variety of industrial sectors. They also manufacture robust, high quality electronic assemblies.

As a Contract Electronics Manufacturer, Datalink Electronics do not export. However, require a deep understanding of export markets and legislation to support their customers who do export and operate internationally.
Dr Allen will be talking about his experience in supporting their customers export and trade objectives, with emphasis on the standards and regulations for placing product on the market in the EU and further afield.

Dr Allen is a Chartered Engineer with a PhD in electronics and an MBA from Loughborough Business School.

The UKTI Building Bridges to Export event is to be held at Burleigh Court in Loughborough on Tuesday, 11 November.

Datalink Electronics partners with Microbiosensors and Smallfry in a £1.7m funded project

The project will focus on an electronic test system that identifies the antibiotic for peritonitis in patients with kidney or liver failure. Peritonitis is an infection of the inner lining of the tummy. Left untreated, it can become life threatening.

The choice of anti-biotics has to be made by Doctors based on an educated guess. Often the choice of antibiotics has to be changed after more information arrives from laboratories. By that time many patients are extremely ill and some fatally. It is important that the Doctors managing these patients can obtain reliable antibiotic information quickly to ensure the most lives saved.

Innovate UK have awarded the £1.7m Smart Grant to develop the system. Managing these patients is very expensive and the cost only increases as the infection worsens. We at Datalink hope to reduce that financial burden with the help of our partners.

Leading Midlands business woman takes starring role in new report on women in manufacturing

Leading Midlands business woman Flo Wood has taken a starring role in a new report out today by EEF, the manufacturers organisation, in partnership with Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.

The report Women in Manufacturing is the second annual assessment of the role of women in senior positions in manufacturing. It finds that all of Britains leading (FTSE 100) manufacturers now have at least one female director on their boards, but more needs to be done to tackle the industrys outdated dirty and unglamorous image and to nurture talented women and girls from classroom to boardroom.

Flo Wood, Managing Director of Datalink Electronics based in Loughborough, was selected to feature in the report as an inspiring example of a woman reaching a senior level in manufacturing. She gives her views on what more could be done to encourage others to follow in her footsteps and explains why it is so important to influence the next generation of girls to consider manufacturing and engineering as a career. She says that changing perceptions about the industry requires efforts from schools as well as businesses.

Her views carry extra weight as SMEs, such as her own business, employ almost 60% of manufacturing workers with the majority of UK manufacturing businesses falling into this camp. This suggests that while it is important for women to have a voice in the boardroom, it is just as important to ensure they are reaching senior levels in SMEs too.

Flo, along with many of her female peers from the industry, advocates increasing gender diversity through encouragement and development, not enforcement. Rather than quotas, they want to see companies take steps to identify and support talented women, improve the image and perception of manufacturing and do more to engage with schools.

They also identify how important it is for girls to be taught STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) with passion and to be exposed to inspiring role models, mentors and careers advice.

Women now account for 21% of directorships in FTSE 100 manufacturing companies, holding 64 out of 305 manufacturing board seats. While an improvement on last year when they held 59 out of 309 seats and accounted for 19% of board positions, the report acknowledges that more still needs to be done.

Flo Wood, Managing Director of Datalink Electronics, says: This report raises some important points and will hopefully make people sit up and think about the opportunities for women in engineering and manufacturing.

Ive enjoyed a great career in this sector and would love to see more young women and girls coming on board. However, they have to be enthused and inspired while young, which is why schools, parents and businesses all have a role to play. The reality is that we have to open their eyes and empower young women to realise their full career potential.

Richard Halstead, Midlands Region Director at EEF, says: Flo is an inspiration so its great to see her featured in this way. The message from this report is clear - manufacturers are heading in the right direction, but cannot afford to let up. If our sector is to continue to thrive we need to be fishing from the entire talent pool and that means ensuring women have the right skills and opportunities and are represented at every level.

Many of the leading women in manufacturing are equally clear - quotas are not the answer. They advocate evolution not revolution, with companies continuing and improving their work to identify and nurture talented women and taking bigger strides in showing that a career in our sector is an attractive, exciting and equal opportunity for all. But, this isnt just about what we as manufacturers can do. The work starts in the classroom where we must see a boost in the number of young women taking STEM subjects and encouraged to raise their career expectations.

David Atkinson, head of manufacturing at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking SME, says: It is reassuring to see that manufacturers are embracing change and addressing the lack of women within UK boardrooms. However more needs to be done so that businesses of all sizes also recognise the need to develop the representation of women from the factory floor.

The growth prospects of manufacturing businesses will depend on their ability and desire to tackle stereotypes. By changing the perceptions of traditional industry, we can encourage a more diverse demographic to consider manufacturing-related careers. It is vital that we help improve the supply of talent to the sector to foster creativity and innovation, particularly if our nations makers are to remain competitive on the global stage.

Women in manufacturing: key findings:

Heading in the right direction: every FTSE 100 manufacturer now has at least one woman on their board
Women now account for 21% of total directorships in FTSE 100 manufacturing companies up from 19% last year
Over a third (36%) of manufacturing companies are at or above the Davies minimum 25% female board representation target up from 31% last year
Leading the way: GlaxoSmithKline and Unilver are ahead of the pack with five female board members each, while Diageo has the greatest proportion at 44%
More to be done: industry must shed outdated dirty and unglamorous image and take more steps to nurture talent from classroom to boardroom.

MARKET UPDATE – JULY 2021

We’re now into the seventh month of the most turbulent year most of us have ever experienced and there is no sign of the volatility of the market abating. Products continue to be under constraint, lead times continue to extend and unfortunately, prices continue to increase.

The situation is common across all product technologies and is affecting almost every supplier to a small or a large extent. We do not see any improvement in the situation in the short or medium-term and we are told that it will certainly carry on until the end of this year and probably well into 2022.

Demand is so high that many suppliers are no longer accepting new orders or forecasts for 2021.

We recommend that any customers who have not yet considered their needs for 2022 and beyond, to do so as soon as possible and place their demand for this period without delay.

Changes for 2016

We are restructuring Datalink to make us even more competitive and your CEM of choice. As part of this process we are pleased to announce that Dr Jim Allen is moving from the Technical Director position to the new post of Development Director. In this role Jim will be able to use his considerable engineering & design experience to help customers develop their product ideas and designs so that we can quickly bring them to market. He will take responsibility for building relationships with academic and industrial partners, pursue opportunities for growing the business, and determine routes to fund our project ideas. Jim is our expert in the design and manufacture of electronics for explosive environments (ATEX) and will continue to support this work.

Jims move allows us to appoint Mr Arash Ghadar as Technical Director. Arash has been the brains behind the many successful medical device developments we have undertaken, as well as being key to the introduction of ISO13485 to the business.

We wish both Jim and Arash good luck in their new roles.

Component Market Update

We would like to encourage our customers to place any orders that are required for Q2 & Q3 as soon as possible. We can schedule to your required delivery dates and can be flexible with anything outside of a 3 month window as long as it is taken within a 12 month period.

The electronic component supply chain is currently experiencing severe disruption due to capacity constraints, obsolescence and increased demand across the board.

We are reaching out to all our customer contacts to advise that we are continually being warned by our suppliers of manufacturer lead times being extended up to 52 weeks. This is leading to parts going on allocation again, (demand outstripping the available manufacturing capacity). For any customers who have a need for automotive chips, analysts are predicting that there will be a global shortage for the next six months causing car makers to temporarily shut.

As a result of this we are also seeing price increases on certain commodities and manufacturers.

Lead time increases as follows:

Connectors - up to 18 weeks

Switches, fans & sensors - up to 28 weeks

Relays - 20-60 weeks

Capacitors - up to 26 weeks, tantalum caps 52 weeks +

Resistors and other passives - up to 30 weeks

Electronic Component Shortages Could Last 2 Years

Electronic Component Shortages May 21 Update

As the rest of the world begins to return to "normal", the electronics market is still reeling from the component shortages caused by the pandemic. Due mainly to factory closures, the supply issue has been heightened by consumer demand for electronics (i.e. computers, phones, electronic games) whilst stuck at home. The electric car industry has also had a big impact on demand as we’re seeing manufacturers such as Honda and BMW having to close down production at their manufacturing plants. We are constantly being warned by industry experts that this global shortage could last for a few years before we begin to see an improvement.

Chinese New Year & a factory fire in Japan both caused another increase in manufacturing delays and more recently the Suez Canal fiasco held up $57 billion of the world's global trade. Raw material shortages are also pushing up lead times, as well as prices.

Long lead times are no longer manufacturer or component specific and major increases are being seen across the board.

We're urging all customers to place forward orders, or to think about securing stock for any 2021/2022 demand, and to have alternatives in place to mitigate any extended lead times. Please don’t think that anything is safe. It could just be a resistor or capacitor that holds up production.

LATi Visit to Datalink Electronics: Rich diversity of projects showcased

LATi members saw a fascinating array of projects that Datalink Electronics get to work on, including specialist projects for the oil and gas industry and healthcare sector. The complexity and diversity of the projects that Datalink get to work on made a huge impression on the audience.

Ben Lincoln of Potter Clarkson, said Jim Allen and Arash Ghadar hosted a fantastic event and it was really interesting to hear about the wide ranging and innovative projects they have worked on. It was impressive to see that Datalink provides a full product design solution and have expertise in more than just the electronics.

The conversation after the presentations turned to how operating systems and hardware/software interfaces have evolved over time and how a move to an internet of things structure will change design parameters further.

The tour of the manufacturing area included explanations of how the fabrication and quality checking and testing machinery works. Several other members of staff were there to answer our questions, which really added to the tour. It was also interesting to hear about the systems in place at Datalink to ensure the traceability of components.

It was clear that Datalink have a talented, friendly and hardworking team of people and I really enjoyed meeting them. Many thanks to Arash, Jim and the team at Datalink and LATi for a great event.
