The engineers at EMKA have put together a quick, simple, low cost and reliable pin hinging solution for specialist enclosure doors and panels.

Their range of pin hinges offer a quickly demountable installation with no loss of the pin – which is retained and spring loaded. These hinges are suitable for light panels where they enable quick assembly as they are only fixed with one half on the panel itself and the hinge pin then located in a hole in the frame.

At its simplest this facilitates an exceptionally quick installation – easily push fit the hinge into a hole in the panel and place the panel in position – job done.

Anti-vibration compression latches from EMKA seal the deal

The engineering team at EMKA recently expressed their opinion that where the hardware priority for a cabinet installation is to do with the effect of the seal on the door, e.g., to ensure the gasket pulls down to a tight seal, in order to maintain the correct IP rating (up to IP69K), then anti-vibration compression latches are an easy choice. This type of latch also offers a close-and-pull design which protects the gasket from the swiping action of the cam - which can otherwise damage the gasket as it latches. They are readily available in many different designs from quarter turns including L and T handles to recessed flap or chest handles.

In many situations compression latches can also prevent nuisance opening by virtue of their screw or lever type mechanism which is inherently resistant to vibration – a characteristic that is often desired for specialist vehicles both road and rail – also for off-road mobile vehicles and for power generating equipment. Compression latches are also available to meet hygienic area specifications. Configurations include insert lock/latch, cylinder key locking, open/closed indicator, adjustable cam height, wing knob opening, L and T handles, and flush mounting options e.g., for rail applications.

Anti-vibration compression latches are available in stainless steel, zinc die and chrome, zinc die and black powder coat, aluminium hard anodised and stainless steel, polyamide to suit the many situations where their high performance characteristics are desirable.

New EMKA 2225 program Flat Swinghandle Mini version

EMKA are pleased to announce a significant new addition to their 2225 locking program coming out of customer feedback and engineering developments, confirming EMKA once again as a major market leader. The 2225 program is an innovative and flexible lock design now available in a miniature format which offers IP66 sealing and accepts many locking sets, all interchangeable from the front of the housing for normal or compression operation with half cylinder or round cylinder, KABA or standard inserts such as double bit or railway types. The system therefore caters for use with various security classes of application across the fields of industrial enclosures and specialist vehicles.

The advanced design of this new lock program is made possible in a mini package (with 70x25mm cut out) by EMKA’s advanced hardware technology, incorporating a flat external design which stands only 9mm above the door so that it can be used in a wide variety of space critical applications. Whether as a closure for wall panels in railway vehicles, as a HotSpot cover on telecommunication housings, as a closure on waste bin housings or on electric charging columns, and much more. Its flat design and magnetically retained swinghandle makes it ideal for areas with narrow passageways, in escape routes or for design-oriented enclosures.

In this new patented design customers are enabled to loosen the two lower screws on the rear side, so the locking set can be pulled out from the front and replaced. If required, other standard inserts, such as the push button from the 2225-U57, can also be implemented. Alternately, on request, the swinghandle without compression function can also be combined with a multi-point locking system.

Due to its compact design, the swinghandle with compression function is smaller than all other existing compression locks on the market in combination with a DIN or KABA cylinder but still offers a full 6mm compression. In addition, this compression latch can be locked and unlocked with all locking devices, including the small EK 333 key, which is not otherwise possible with conventional compression latches, as the keys are usually too weak and can break. The pre-assembled swinghandle and dish feature an integrated scratch protection to prevent surface damage.

EMKA sealing profiles for industrial cabinets and enclosures

EMKA are pleased to announce that their expanding range of extruded gaskets for enclosures and other purposes are now available for sealing of industrial cabinets and enclosures, also for use on commercial and specialist vehicles as well as street furniture. They include self-adhesive, self-grip (clip-on), channel fixing and window types (with expansion insert). The EMKA range includes EPDM, NBR, CR, PVC and silicone, as well as many with EMC compatible coating. Increasing requirements for compression locks and up to IP65 sealing drive the development of these sections.

The EMKA gasket program now includes many hundreds of sections with or without spring clip mounting spine for environmental sealing, equipment protection or personnel protection. Profiles in neoprene, EPDM, PVC, black nitrile and natural rubber cover traditional expanded closed cell (self-adhesive) foam, through blade and bubble or P type sections, to more complex multi-functional and custom designs.

These profiles include wiping designs, fillers and flocked weather strips and supported sections with internal or flange structural support. Specialist considerations regarding shore hardness, tensile strength, recoil elasticity, abrasion resistance and climatic/chemical resistance can also be advised upon and allowed for in custom production.

Standard products in the range feature edge protection or low friction designs while the tank band support sections fill a very specific role for trucks and similar vehicles where fuel/water/oil tanks are secured by banding straps. In addition to electrical/electronic enclosures and cabinets, many standard sections are available specifically for applications such as motor vehicles, railway carriages, and off-road trucks and machines such as agricultural equipment and fire trucks. Coaches and motor homes also feature with moulded sections to suit doors, windows and ventilation panels, as well as external storage compartments. EMKA Quarter-Turns – simple latches through to keylocks requiring just a quarter-turn to operate

EMKA ex-stock quarter-turns are quick to fit and quick to operate latch locks which suit factory to office, computer room to laboratory where quarter-turns are a simple and low-cost latching and locking system – some with spring clip fixing, others with back nut and an increasing focus on push/clip fit or other ultra-quick fit designs such as the EMKA 1022. So useful is the quarter turn concept that new sizes, styles and specialist designs are constantly being brought forward in materials such as hi-tech plastic, zinc die or stainless steel to suit new applications and more varied environments. Sizes vary from mini locks, generally for use on very small enclosures – even boxes - up to medium and large which may be employed on larger enclosures or cabinets. Where a single point closure is insufficient, then two quarter-turns are frequently installed.

Where dual fitment is not appropriate then quarter-turns can be integrated into a multi-point rod locking system for medium-sized enclosures or free standing cabinets. The range also incorporates additional leverage, e.g. in a wing knob or lever design.

Quarter-turns are the ubiquitous door closing workhorse of the enclosure world frequently offering IP65 degrees of sealing – a favourite is the insert lock with a triangular, square or double bar format or one of many others, which offers a variable degree or security dependent on the key design, with good leverage where the key doubles as a handle.

Otherwise the traditional quarter-turn layout is common in T handles and L handles which may or may not include a cylinder key lock for normal levels of security on medium to large enclosures/cabinets – also for access to machine protective cabins etc. Modular quarter-turns from EMKA have been a major benefit to panel builders as they are available with matching cams of varying offset and usually with different body lengths, so enabling a considerable range of door/frame depth to be accommodated.

Often loosely categorised under quarter-turns are many compression latch/locks which are based on the same body pattern. Strictly they latch with a quarter-turn and then compress the gasket with an additional 90 degree turn., but offer a greatly enhanced level of sealing and vibration resistance e.g. in stainless steel for pressure washed hygiene areas.

New Anti-microbial bow handle from EMKA – for domestic, public, industrial use

EMKA’s new 1095-36-WI bow handle with the optional cover is designed to meet increasing hygiene regulations which require anti-microbial characteristics for use in highly frequented environments. These are situations where particular attention must be paid to potential exposure and include areas of public access, also in medical technology settings or in the food industry. Other possible uses can be found in ventilation and air conditioning installations.

Silver is a reliable and well proven biocide now introduced to the popular EMKA 1095 program during the production phase where it is mixed into the granular base. This new anti-microbial handle offers exactly the same performance and appearance as standard items in all other respects. The WI version is also black to match normal industry practice and has an optional clip on cover for enhanced aesthetic appearance as well as cleanliness and for security.

Antimicrobial plastics are ideally suited to these applications – while there is no change in the previous physical or other chemical properties there are also no restrictions on use and no special care is required for installation or aftercare, as the silver additive is fully integrated throughout the polyamide. The antibacterial effect is considered not as a substitute, but as a supplement to regular disinfection procedures, e.g. in the toilet area or on food and pharmaceutical machines.

Handles with this silver biocide inclusion have laboratory proven effectiveness according to ISO 22196 as demonstrated against E. Coli (intestinal bacteria) and Staphylococcus aureus. This is particularly critical in hospitals especially because Staphylococcus aureus can be multi-resistant to a range of antibiotics.

EMKA range of ex-stock hinges for flush enclosure doors

EMKA are delighted to announce their program of visible and non-visible hinges for flush enclosure doors. Flush doors often require hinges which are hidden or have hidden fixings for greater security so as to eliminate or conceal an obvious target area. Flush door design is inherently security conscious as it naturally calls for narrow door-to-frame gaps which can resist the insertion of screwdrivers or other levers. Applications include HVACR packages and similar, e.g., industrial production lines, warehousing etc.

Door removal is convenient when required by virtue of removable pins or lift-off designs. Variable door returns are envisaged from up to 20 mm and up to 26 mm industry standards. Torque hinges with integral adjustment are available to control door opening against gravity or wind forces.

Materials include zinc die, reinforced polyamide, stainless steel and steel zinc plated or raw for welding. 2D and 3D adjustable hinges are available to enable custom adjustment at assembly or on-site installation stages.

New Invisible Gear Hinge from EMKA – a 180° fit for railway doors

The new EMKA 1007 program concealed gear hinge – often referred to in the industry as “SOSS” type is a hidden 180° opening unit mounted within the width thickness of the doors with a minimum dimension of 33mm. Smooth sliding action and improved appearance are additionally offered by this rugged hinge which is equally at home in railway carriages or offices, on passenger doors or cupboard doors – where being hidden it is also resistant to vandalism.

The elegant design of this 1007 hinge is made possible by the integration of polyamide 66 GF50, POM and PTFE high specification plastics, combined with plated zinc die, steel and stainless steel components. We are advised by EMKA that the heating, ventilating, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) industry is one of the most important application areas requiring specialised locks, hinges and sealing profiles. For this reason, EMKA explain that they are constantly developing their portfolio for this sector and optimising a separate sector range to meet the requirements of these HVACR customers. EMKA 1095 program – bow/bridge, tubular and chest handles for industry

The ubiquitous need to allow an interface for the human hand with industrial equipment of all sizes has led EMKA to offer their 1095 program of handles which provide an easy solution – easy to use, easy to install.

Known variously as bow handles, bridge handles or simply as pull handles, the versions from EMKA in comfortable round or oval grip styles, are readily fixed from front or rear depending on type, with sizes suitable for single hand use from 120mm up to 500mm in length.

EMKA Gaskets – flame retardant, low smoke, low tox for the rail industry

EMKA are delighted to offer specialist gasket profile sections in flame retardant, low smoke, low tox materials which are primarily aimed at railway applications such as mobile units, coaches, rolling stock, enclosures, station installations and related equipment operating in elevated risk areas.

Especially for customers of the railway industry, EMKA has developed a product range with fire-protection tested or fire-protection capable locks, hinges and gasketing made of fire prevention checked material. It complies with the special requirements of the sector and is designed to meet the relevant standards such as DIN EN 45545-2 “Railway applications – Fire protection on railway vehicles”. In their in-house Technology Centre both standard and customer-specific solutions for railway vehicles are designed.

Of particular interest are likely to be custom sections including vulcanised frames for immediate installation on doors, panels, inspection windows and similar. New Visual indication IP69K stainless steel compression latch from EMKA

EMKA are always pleased to develop innovative new products for different market sectors – in this case an IP69K compression latch in stainless steel with visual status indication to suit railway and other special vehicle applications. This allows for distanced observation of the lock status – whether the lock is open or closed – by virtue of a cover which is linked to the lock. If the lock is open then the cover is held open. Due to its compact design and high weather resistance the latch can be used in many outdoor areas, such as wind power plants, tunnel construction, traffic facilities and rail vehicles.

The lid of the new EMKA compression lock is spring-mounted and snaps shut automatically only when closed. If the lock is turned by 25 degrees or more, the lid remains open at an angle of 90 degrees. A clearly visible opening indicator then appears on the inside of the lid: a red area with the EMKA logo. On trains, for example, railway personnel can see from a distance as soon as a door or flap is not completely closed.

Major features include resistance to shaking and vibration, thus preventing unintentional opening of the lock, also the lock complies with protection class IP69K and fire protection regulations. Other features include automatic flap closure with seal on the lock to protect from damage to the door.

Remote and electronic locking systems from EMKA for enclosures and cabinets

EMKA UK recently informed that their new Rack Management Systems are installed worldwide in data centres and server parks of banks and co-location centres where a combination of electromechanical handles, software and radio technology is considered the best choice – such as the "Agent E" type handle, which offers personalised access to the cabinet as well as permanent monitoring and control of the opening and closing processes. Moreover, the system monitors all physical parameters in the rack and thus increases the operational reliability of the entire installation. It consists of database-driven control software, high-capacity modules and electro-mechanical handles.

EMKA Rack Management systems are accommodated by a high-capacity wireless network which enables direct access to a virtually unlimited number of server racks, while the complete logging documents all access-relevant information and guarantees the possibility of unambiguous backtracking of the events. In case of irregularities, alerts are automatically transmitted.

Stand-alone systems are suitable for access control of individual racks that do not require central monitoring. Depending on the chosen lock the opening is either affected by RFID cards or by entering a PIN code on a keypad. Systems with RFID cards are especially easy to install as no further wiring in the rack is required.

Outdoor installations are covered by the recently introduced swinghandle for the iLOQ S50 profile half cylinders which expands operational possibilities by using an energy-autonomous, digital locking solution. The system can be unlocked using a smartphone or digital key and, at the same time, is powered wirelessly by the same transmission.

This new closure solution works without a battery or other stationary power supply, which makes the lock particularly interesting for the telecommunications industry, e.g., for outdoor housings or telecommunications cabinets which are also frequently found in remote locations. In this case, the system receives the energy required for unlocking via NFC from the Android/iOS smartphone.

Smart access with a mobile phone app is the latest EMKA development in this arena, a move which promises to enable the benefits of new technology across all industrial enclosure/cabinet applications.

This newly introduced app transforms the mobile phone into a digital key for the sophisticated locking solution so that it is possible to trace, manage, and access allocated handles with various levels of permission determined by specified user profiles.

EMKA window rubber profiles suit specialist panels and specialist vehicles

EMKA offer effective ex-stock gasket solutions for glazing of inspection panels on equipment and windows on vehicles.

Based on traditional well proven designs, these EPDM glazing profiles come in an “H” section clamping style with separate locking strip to ensure a secure fixing of glass/acrylic/polycarbonate/aluminium, or similar panels of up to 6mm thickness in up to 2.5mm doors.

Alternative “Z” section profiles in EPDM and NBR provide an offset installation where the window may be arranged to protrude from the door or otherwise inset into it. This offset enables small additional clearance to be achieved if required and offers a rapid fixing of glazing panels up to 6mm thick. It also has the benefit of added impact resistance on machines as the glazing is larger than the opening thus offering greater protection for the operator.

Standard enclosure & panel products from EMKA to suit specialist engineering sectors

Andy Billingham MD at EMKA (UK) recently described how they have historically developed industrial hardware for customer applications with high-quality standard and custom products in an application responsive process that has led them to take ownership of many technologies in-house. This, and the greatly varying environments and operating practices which they are called upon to meet, have encouraged focus of resources on niche applications from data centres to agriculture, specialist vehicles to rail and wider afield.

A good example is that of HVAC specialist panel hardware – in this case especially called for are heavy-duty vibration resistant latches, lift and turn latches, pull handles, pull with quarter turn and 180° hinges and P type gaskets. EMKA Smart lock management for SICHERT outdoor cabinets

SICHERT is a company that produces outdoor and multifunctional enclosures as part of a secure system for complex infrastructures. They focus on development of intelligent enclosures that are individually tailored to their customers, and are specialists for Serving Area Interface (SAI) cabinets. That is to say multifunctional cabinets (MFC), pop systems and fibre optic network distributors. One focus is on establishing future-oriented market trends such as the construction of fibre optic, 5G and LoRa networks for the integration of future smart cities.

To achieve proper access control, SICHERT and EMKA have combined their know-how - resulting from many years of good cooperation between these two partners. Fundamental to the development was considering how to combine EMKA’s locking technology with SICHERT enclosures to increase the security of the outdoor enclosures without affecting the convenient operation “look & feel”.

The result of this development was KeyLoS, short for KeyLocation System, which allows the enclosure to be locked mechanically without a physical key. It is an electronic access system consisting of three components and the enclosure: Hub, electronic swinghandle and power bank. Since the FCC series are purely passive fibre optic network distributors, inductive charging is particularly important here.

These systems are referred to as fibre to the home (FTTH). The aim is to ensure fast data rates for consumers and businesses in the long term. Fast internet and interference-free telephony: ensuring this is again the work of outdoor switch cabinets or multifunctional cabinets. The physical infrastructure required for connection of companies and households to the fibre optic network consists of a digital network of nodes. More precisely, key locations such as data centres, PoPs and outdoor enclosures in the field. These enclosures are part of a vital infrastructure: their network covers telecommunications – telephone, internet and TV for individual households – in large areas.

With its FCC system family, SICHERT addresses the expansion of FTTH networks. The company has developed six housing sizes for pre-assembled fibre optic network distributors: a uniform series for any expansion with just one system. Having thus created the standard for network distributors, the company has now added the KeyLoS solution to the system family. KeyLoS is a stand-alone product that can be used in all types of enclosures - including infrastructures such as server cabinets, for which EMKA also manufactures smart handles.

The idea behind KeyLoS emerged from a fundamental problem: because the maintenance of distribution cabinets depends heavily on their security which includes dangers such as vandalism and damage through accidents, thunderstorms or floods. The management of the associated physical keys is of crucial importance. This is complicated for staff as well as for service providers and causes problems time and again. Monitoring the enclosures does not occur and represents a massive security problem for the critical infrastructure. These manual systems are very labour-intensive and costly and can be a significant challenge for the company.

The KeyLoS HUB provides the connection to the management software. Access rights are managed centrally in these systems, locations are monitored, and all activities at the enclosure are registered and reported. In addition, administrators can issue and revoke keys in real-time. The enclosure is accessed via Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE 4.0). The app is used to request keys and to open and lock them digitally.

The responsible employee can monitor the status of all cabinets via real-time monitoring, manage central access rights, create all locations, monitor these systems, and receive an immediate notification of activities at the cabinet. Keys are also issued and revoked in real-time. Another highlight: as the power supply for passive locations is induction-based from the outside, there is no need for a battery in the enclosure that has to be maintained and thus no physical key to open the enclosure when the battery is empty. In addition, as a white label solution, the system is open to other applications.

The result is an outdoor lock management system with huge potential. Genset housing hardware from EMKA

EMKA engineers have developed a package of proven enclosure hardware with style and quality to compliment all sizes of electrical generators for basement or rooftop installation. Genset packages are often installed in harsh outdoor environments but are required to be reliable and resistant to these arduous conditions for extended lifetimes – EMKA locks, handles, hinges, gasket and accessories support this and are suitable for external enclosures or cabins – also for internal control housings.

Typically, the hardware kit includes an IP65 slam closure recessed handle, which provides an easy opening cycle – pull to operate, slam to close. Once open, telescopic cover stays/door stays in steel or stainless steel may be used to hold the door open conveniently against wind forces in the outside environment or to support horizontal panels against gravity during access for maintenance.

External flat butt hinges are simple to install and suitable for large heavy doors, while lift-off versions are available as are internal lift-off hinges. EMKA compression latches aid wind power from Nordex

The Nordex Group has over 35 years of experience in the onshore wind turbine business worldwide and seeks to set a benchmark for renewable energies. Since its foundation, they have installed wind turbines having more than 41 gigawatts of rated power. The company continuously optimises its development, production, project development and maintenance, including that of individual components inside the turbine. Then in 2019 Nordex decided to source their locking hardware from another global player, EMKA, who designed a unique compression latch to secure vital access points where it must withstand forces of up to 331 Newtons (N). These locks are fitted to special floor plates which are required to prevent serious accidents.

This unique compression latch is used in the hub, on the rotor head of the turbine. These systems are sealed with special floor plates to ensure that the technician can work safely and not accidentally step into one of the hollow rotor blades. To gain access to the inner workings of the blades, the plates each have one or two inspection hatches. Four compression latches ensure these 15-kilogram hatches are securely installed in the floor plate. In the past, supply issues have been problematic, plus the generic housing used at the time was made of zinc die-cast, and the latch plate was made of unalloyed steel. This material combination was susceptible to corrosion and caused a decrease in strength over time. The component also indirectly added high service costs because when checking the installed systems, it was not clear at first glance whether or not the component was in a locked position. The concern was that a technician might just possibly fail to close the hatches properly after maintenance. As a result, these hatches could become unhinged when the wind turbine rotated again. This meant that the wind turbine had to be shut down again in order to rectify the fault, so incurring: unforeseen additional costs over the service life of the installation.

Since availability was a major concern, the responsible engineers at Nordex and the supplier of the floor plates decided in 2019 to replace the existing locking system inventory with a new lock. These unique designs were to identify the system’s open/locked position clearly. In addition, the new solution had to withstand high pressure and resist impurities, dust, and lubricants. Because of these features alone, the locking systems would significantly increase the process reliability of the wind turbines.

Explained Peter Baars, development engineer in the rotor blade development department at the Nordex Group and responsible for the project “EMKA stood out because of its good performance in the past, its large product range and, at the same time, its great disposition to approach the customer.”

To ensure that the floor hatches are securely mounted in the cut-outs, EMKA developed a new compression latch made of stainless steel to resist the forces and corrosive environment involved. This solution ensures that the cam not only closes the hatch firmly but is also vibration-proof due to its compression function. The lock can only be opened by turning it 180° with a square 8 mm key with open/closed marking. When rotating the square 90°, the cam moves 6 mm in the axial direction, releasing the compression. When rotating another 90°, the released cam rotates as well, and the hatch can now be lifted out. The actuation covers only half of the housing’s head so that each position of the locking system shows either OPEN (red) or CLOSED (green). This visual aid allows the technician to see whether the locking system is closed or open at a glance. The red/green markings are also smudge-tested according to DIN EN 62208 chap. 9.3 and DIN EN 61439-1 chap. 10.2.7.

In addition, EMKA had to consider the prevailing conditions in a wind turbine when developing the locking system, these include, above all, the centrifugal forces, which have an increased effect on the turbine’s rotating hub. In the first step, therefore, the durability of dynamic loads of the latch cam combination had to be more than doubled – from the previous limit of 140 N to 337 N. In order to prevent unintentional opening during operation, the locking system’s design is vibration-resistant and shock-proof compliant with the European standard DIN EN 61373. Plus, the entire lock system is maintenance-free, so there are no conflicting schedules regarding the systems‘ maintenance cycles.

There are now over 850 plants equipped with EMKA compression locks – while Nordex is using its wind turbines to contribute to switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. The design of this compression latch and its OPEN/CLOSED indicator enables EMKA to partner on this course.

Data Centre Security with the EMKA Agent E wireless system and iris scan

EMKA UK MD Andrew Clutterbuck informs us that their Agent E Wireless locking system has been developed for high-security installations around the world, and has especially demonstrated its flexibility in a converted civil defence bunker application at the Stollen Lucerne Data Centre, in combination with an iris scanner incorporated at the customer’s request.

Andrew raised the question “What added value can an aging bunker complex still offer in this day and age?” This was also the question energie wasser luzern (ewl) asked itself – talking about the old civil defence bunker in the Wartegg hill near Lucerne. Their response was to build one of the most sophisticated data centres in Switzerland. Today, the Stollen Lucerne Data Centre boasts five major tunnels, each allocated 200 square metres for IT system hardware. In addition, there are eight auxiliary tunnels, referred to as Private Rooms, these are allotted 50 to 100 square metres per room for IT system hardware. The CO2-neutral facility, operated by ewl Rechenzentrum AG, combines state-of-the-art technology with sustainability and an optimal connection to the communication and energy networks.

To keep data stored on-site from unauthorised digital access, firewalls and complex encryption solutions are used by data centres but of course the same degree of security should also be applied to physical access. The Stollen Luzern Data Centre already offers a high-security level simply because of its underground location but additionally, the operators required the ability to monitor the activity of each individual at any given time in the various sections of the data centre. As the facility contains servers from several companies, individual racks must be secured independently, a requirement which led the team at ewl Rechenzentrum AG to seek suitable solutions from the early planning stages of the project - alongside stable server racks, they also emphasised the need for a dependable locking solution.

ewl Rechenzentrum AG developed a detailed plan for the sophisticated locking system they wanted to install in the bunker. Critically, the biometric access control had to be secure and the wireless communication with the rack and database had to be seamless, with a quick and simple setup. While searching for a suitable supplier, ewl Rechenzentrum AG contacted EMKA at an early stage. Their “Agent E Wireless” system fit the criteria exactly with its wireless locking system enhanced by an iris scanner upgrade. By leveraging a combination of electromechanical handle, software and wireless technology, the security system allows individualised access to all cabinets and perpetually supervises the opening and closing processes. In addition, the handles can be easily and quickly adapted to cabinets from different manufacturers. This system had already been tested and proved successful in similar projects in Switzerland. ewl Rechenzentrum AG attached particular importance to a biometric system that regulates access to the server cabinets. Typically, EMKA provides authentication with an RFID card and Agent E. In this instance, there was a unique requirement that called for an iris scanner that can open the server cabinets remotely. Since the eye profile cannot be mistaken, this authentication method was understood to offer maximum security.

The Swiss company Touchless Biometric Systems AG (TBS) provided just the right system for this project. To manage access, all authorised individuals and personnel in the computer centre save a scan of their iris in the database, this individual pattern of iris is then encrypted and safeguarded from misuse. To open the desired server cabinet, the personnel or customers at the data centre must use the iris scanner to identify themselves. The scanner sends the data to the database and evaluates the information against the pre-existing patterns and authorisation profile. All authorised rack doors are now shown and can be selected on a display. The selected handles are transmitted to the control unit of the EMKA system and from there the activation is triggered wirelessly. Simultaneously, ewl Rechenzentrum AG receives up-to-date information regarding the server rack doors. Through personalised access control down to the cabinet level, Agent E thus enables clear logging and tracing. The entire system thereby consists not only of an iris scanner and electromechanical handles, but also includes database-based control software and powerful modules.

EMKA precision fit closure technology secures robotic controls

For decades, the Robotics and Automation group KUKA has relied on EMKA’s precision fit closures and hinges. So, when they were developing new modular control cabinets for their robot controller and central power supply, the team at EMKA was an obvious choice. Security is vital on these control cabinets which protect the sensitive electronic system against unauthorised access and prevent water and dust permeation.

The planning stages started at the beginning of 2018, followed by approximately two years of development. In January 2021, the order for the series production was placed. During development, EMKA demonstrated its vertical range of manufacture or real net output ratio by making numerous adaptations to the customer’s requirements. In close consultation with KUKA, the hinge types and internal closures were redesigned several times. In addition to several door hinges, the core product is the swivel lever system from the 1325 range, characterised by its modularity and quick assembly.

This modular system offers variable, easily exchangeable locking centre inserts so that KUKA can respond precisely to its customers’ requirements. Furthermore, the flat design of the pre-assembled and spring-loaded swing handle and the use of flame-retardant plastic parts ensure that the system is fire-proof.

The development process focused on two aspects: EMKA developed a new 50/25/50 hole pattern, especially for the new KR C5 cabinet series. Also, the closure technology was adapted to new design requirements: In the course of a more modern look of the new series, the door construction is designed at an angle. The hinges had to be able to bear these loads and be installed accordingly. Another notable design concerns the latches’ placement: normally, the control cabinets are closed exclusively from the outside.

However, the new KUKA cabinet series specified that a side door must be opened exclusively from the inside. For this purpose, T-shaped handles with reversed latches were installed mirror-inverted to not be visible from the outside and fulfil modern design requirements. However, the design also serves a functional purpose: during repair work, employees can unhinge the doors and have more moving space.

Open and straightforward communication was particularly noteworthy in the successful completion of this major project, allied to EMKA’s ability to quickly change design features and manage the whole project in-house.

EMKA hardware for specialist high speed water shuttle

When thinking of French luxury brands, Chanel or Louis Vuitton come to mind. But what about EMKA? Well yes, when it comes to their partnership with Advanced Aerodynamic Vessels, a manufacturer of catamarans for passenger transport. EMKA hardware components reliably close the entrance doors, flaps, and entrances to the engine compartment – among other things, in a prestigious project in which VIP shuttles transport passengers through the port of Monaco.

Advanced Aerodynamic Vessels (AV2) is a boat manufacturer designing catamarans for “high speed” passenger transport. Their team developed a new generation of transport vessels that use aerodynamics for improved energy efficiency, safely lifting the vessel, so reducing hydrodynamic drag. The propulsion power required depends primarily on the weight carried by the water. Therefore, reducing this drag is key to greater efficiency. The AV2 site combines their design office and shipyard in one place, which allows engineers and designers to work side by side and optimise the ships’ details which has enabled EMKA to be up close and personal with this process over a four-year development period.

In search for locking systems to suit the engine compartment and entrance doors, AV2 contacted the hardware experts at EMKA in 2017 with an order for prototypes. The sales representative in charge, looked at the design directly on-site and suggested various solutions from the range. Since then, EMKA has supplied three projects from the boat manufacturer with stainless steel quarter turns, compression latches, escutcheons and keys, and ramps. In addition, vibration-proof products control access to the engine and maintenance compartments.

One of these projects is the unique shuttle service operating at the Monaco marina, for which EMKA supplied the closure technology for a transport boat – which can carry up to twelve passengers – for a shuttle service that connects the marina of Monaco and its extension in Ventimiglia, Italy.

The catamaran is equipped with two 350 hp engines and can reach a speed of 50 knots. According to the Project Manager of AV2, what is interesting here is the relationship between speed and consumption: “Compared to a conventional boat that would travel at the same speed, our fuel consumption is 50 percent less”.

He went on to explain “The cooperation with EMKA has been characterised by close communication from the very beginning. Their sales engineer spent much time with our development department to understand our specific needs. For example, he was involved even before completing our first catamaran, when we were still working with hand-drawn plans. Likewise, EMKA has been with us through the entire process from design to finished product, through a proven track record of delivery and responsiveness.”

EMKA standard hinges for prominent cabinet doors

The team at EMKA explained recently that their program of hinges for prominent enclosure doors includes the facility for up to 180 degree opening when adjacent to another door – so affording full access without needing to remove the door. Fitment is by screw fixing, also studs or welding for use on visible or concealed installations for added security.

Where required door removal or hinge demounting may be facilitated by using a design with easy pin removal or lift-off capability e.g., visible hinges are available with quick removal pin fixings to dismount the whole hinge – also with fixed or lift off options for quick door installation or removal.

Stainless steel, zinc die and reinforced polyamide construction are included in the program as are 2D and 3D adjustable hinges for detailed alignment at assembly or onsite for correction e.g., when heavy door-mounted equipment is used.

New 180 degree screw-on hinge without hinge pin from EMKA reduces assembly time, cuts cost

Designed to provide the same performance as the existing EMKA 1056 hinge but at reduced cost and enabling lift off door operation. This novel approach to simplification of design suits flush mounted doors and may be interchanged with the existing 1056 design with no need to modify drawings or production.

The screw-on hinge does not need the usual hinge pin by virtue of its novel design which incorporates the pin into the two separate leaves of the hinge in such a way that they can be inserted at the 270° position then become securely interlocked when the hinge is closed to 180°. This feature also enables simple door removal when required.

On the one hand, this results in significant cost advantages compared to conventional screw-on hinges with hinge pins. On the other hand, the design enables tool-free assembly within a few seconds. To do this, the two identical hinge halves are first inserted into each other in the 270° position. The fitter then brings the assembled hinge halves into the intended 180° position. Both halves are already firmly connected to each other, even without a hinge pin. In the 180° position, the hinge is then fixed to the intended application area with countersunk screws.

Depending on the customer's requirements, the hinge may be supplied already pre-assembled or as individual hinge halves for self-assembly. The hinge with its design-protected hinge halves is available in three different sizes: 60 x 60 mm (M8), 50 x 50 mm (M6) and 40 x 40 mm (M5). Customers can also choose from four different materials and several surfaces: Polyamide (glass-fibre reinforced plastic), zinc die-cast (black powder-coated or chrome-plated), aluminium (die-cast; black powder-coated or anthracite anodised) and stainless steel (investment casting; ground or industrially polished).

While polyamide, the lightest material available, impresses with its high elasticity, tensile strength, rigidity and hardness, zinc die-casting plays to its strengths with high strength and durability (fatigue resistance). The aluminium hinge, on the other hand, scores with its low weight and resistance to corrosion and weathering. The stainless steel version also offers high resistance to corrosion and weathering plus rugged high performance, which also enables it to be used even with thin enclosure walls.

New from EMKA – stainless steel tamper-proof compression latch for railway use

Vibration and tampering are both addressed with the new Program 1000 stainless steel compression latch from EMKA for use in railway applications.

This IP65 latch offers a high degree of vandal-resistance by virtue of its tube key mechanism requiring a special internally profiled key to open/close and to operate the 6mm gasket compression featured by turning the key 90° - once to close the latch and then again to compress the gasket.

For clear visual indication the lock has red/green markings and a status arrow on the activating insert which shows the full 180° of movement so as to confirm that the lock is secure. Appropriate tube keys are also supplied.

Long term partnership reaps many rewards - EMKA locking technology partnership with HVACR OEM

For 25 years HANSA Klimasysteme has relied on EMKA for sophisticated locking technology and secure closure solutions. In fact, HANSA Klimasysteme and EMKA have been working together to reliably lock complex air conditioning and ventilation units with fittings and gaskets for over two decades. Their latest project focused on replacing existing components: aluminium parts are used as connecting elements at the corners of the air-conditioning units to stabilise the housing cube. In addition, EMKA made the previous aluminium mould part suitable for die-casting and used a precisely fitting geometry.

HANSA develops and produces air-conditioning and ventilation systems for schools, offices, sports halls, swimming pools, hospitals, industry and IT rooms. Except for a few standard units, HANSA specialises in customised production. Within limits allowed by the respective standards and directives, the company manufactures customised units according to the room ventilation requirements.

Furthermore, HANSA adapts the units’ design to the size of the building or the size of the ventilation centre. The aim is to achieve a perfect room climate with minimum energy consumption. The concept is based on a frame constructed of aluminium profiles and double-skin cladding elements made of galvanised and coated steel sheets with an intermediate insulation layer.

All system components must maintain either positive or negative pressure as required to regulate the temperature and air exchange in entire building complexes. The proper locking technology is an integral part of the enclosures to ensure the desired compression and easy and safe operation during maintenance. As a long-standing system partner of the air-conditioning industry, EMKA locks comply with the special ventilation and air-conditioning systems requirements and fulfil the corresponding standards such as DIN EN 1886 or VDI 6022.

HANSA were able to switch to parts made of die-cast aluminium with various EMKA fittings, ranging from hinges to levers on the operating doors. Hygienic sealing gaskets made of EPDM and silicone are also used in these units to seal them pressure-tight and to ensure the systems’ durability. The latest joint project was the changeover from aluminium mould parts to die-cast aluminium parts. These components are used in the corners of air-conditioning units above a specific size as connecting elements between the aluminium profiles.

The difference in production is that compared to gravity die casting, the metal is injected into the mould cavity under pressure in pressure die casting with consequent increase in quality and reduction in piece price for larger quantities.

“Since our instruments have had continuously higher sales, the quantities of these systems have increased accordingly,” explains Arno Bunger, production manager at HANSA. “From a certain number of units onwards, it is worth switching to die-casting. Even if the mould is more expensive, the components are ultimately much cheaper.”

Because every year, approx. 8,000 parts are used the joint project started at the end of 2019, focusing on the question: “How can we change the existing component to make it suitable for aluminium die casting?” EMKA then created compliant engineering drawings and had the appropriate tools manufactured. The key demand for the aluminium die-cast parts was that above all, they must be stable and have an exact geometry. Moreover, the price had to be fundamentally reduced compared to mould production.

Bunger referred to future collaborations: “For these systems, too, we have chosen EMKA as our reliable supplier for decades. EMKA is proven because of its high delivery capacity. Moreover, the team around our contact persons is very committed, competent and makes short-notice enquiries possible quickly”, Bunger sums up that the next project is already being planned to convert hinges previously manufactured in-house to EMKA’s new innovative 2D hinges with raised hinge bracket.

EMKA Outdoor lock management intelligent control

Fast Internet and interference-free telephony is the purpose of many outdoor control cabinets or telecommunications enclosures. Their outdoor installation at the roadside sometimes makes them a target for vandals and hackers. In order to protect the sensitive electronics and only allow access to authorised persons, EMKA has developed an outdoor lock solution: Their Low Power Outdoor handle forms an intelligent system with a wireless cabinet that transmits data to a central management unit with Real-Time Monitoring.

Locking solutions from EMKA are used in order to control access. Two and a half years ago, EMKA started cooperating with a major security technology distributor and other large independent companies from the telecommunications sector wishing to develop intelligent outdoor lock solutions. This initially resulted in a project of around 500 switch cabinets which were fitted with about 1,500 EMKA electronic swinghandles from their 1307 program. This concept has now undergone further development: The result is the Low Power Outdoor handle, and according to Andy Billingham, Managing Director of EMKA UK, it is the “next step in outdoor lock management“. A passive, wireless mechanism without power connection and an intelligent lock with an integrated card reader which form a completely new solution certified according to RC2 for burglary protection.

Real-Time Monitoring with the EMKA system saves time and costs - A LoRa/NB-IoT connection transmits data to the central Network Operations Centre (NOC) so the responsible employee can monitor all locker status via Real-Time Monitoring on the display. This includes how long the lock and door have been open, the temperature inside the enclosure, whether water is penetrating into the cabinet, or whether the cabinet is tilted by more than eight degrees, e.g. by vandals. After receiving an automatic message in the event of a malfunction, the NOC can send a technician specifically to the site in order to check on things. The completely de-energised, battery-operated cabinet can be opened with a compatible key or smartphone – but only if access has been granted in advance. The result is that the operator benefits from efficient maintenance and has complete control over the status, while saving time and costs.

EMKA understands that the basic rule for all control cabinets is that the components inside, especially the sensitive electronic components, must be protected. However, there are significant differences, especially in the locking systems used. When special customer requirements have to be met on large cabinets, standardised locking systems sometimes reach their limits. However, EMKA’s slimline multi-point locking systems frequently offer the right solution, by enabling the lock mechanism to release space on the door. This allows additional internal clearance, while providing exceptional closure capabilities.

Andy Billingham – MD at EMKA UK points out “Control cabinets are available in various shapes and designs, ranging from single cabinets to in-line cabinets or cabinets with double doors. All are available for indoor and outdoor applications. Environmental conditions and individual requirements significantly affect the choice of materials and the final design of the cabinet. But the cabinet alone does not adequately protect the internal components and electronics.”

He explains that “The locking and hinge solution is much more critical if the cabinet door is meant to seal securely and, if necessary, must withstand high pressure or fulfil other safety requirements. In order to find the most suitable closure and hinge solution, the environmental influences and the installation location are also decisive. Whilst housings used outdoors are mostly made of plastic and powder-coated steel, the material of choice remains stainless steel for very special applications.”

“The locking components should be made of the same material, regardless of material selection. Furthermore, high demands on tightness and the prevention of vandalism may have to be met in outdoor applications by using, for example, the IP65 protection class and security standards according to resistance classes.”

EMKA engineers have established that when designing control cabinets, a distinction is made between closures inside and outside the door seal. Locks inside the door seal are installed on interior doors and frequently outdoors. For example, a swing handle may be mounted on the door, which drives two locking bars inside the door – using either a drive or a locking cam. These systems compress the door seal and ensure a secure closure. EMKA has developed a unique compression latch system with multiple interlocking for closures inside the door seal. If using a rotating movement of a compression latch of only 90° – usually 180° – the door closes at several locking points which pulls the entire door evenly into the door seal even if the internal pressure is high.

Alternatively, the lock may be placed outside the seal so that, for example, no components protrude into the cabinet interior, the locking bars on the inside of the door are pushed into mounted locking points on the door frame with the door closed using a swinghandle or lifthandle.

The design of control cabinets demands the highest safety requirements for locking components. For example, the EMKA specialists for locking systems were asked to design an attractive swinghandle with resistance class RC2 for outdoor control cabinets for the Dutch IT system house Tecnolimit. This handle is easy to operate and can be monitored electronically.

EMKA eCam updates mechanical locks to electronic security systems

EMKA are offering their retro-fit eCam system as an upgrade for mechanical locks and latches where an electronic interface is now required to improve security and/or provide access logs integrated with other personnel monitoring networks.

The eCam facilitates electronic locking for quarter-turns and other latching without the need to change doors or panels on machine controls, machine guards, control and data housings, so ensuring major time and cost savings over the alternative of re-installing new cabinets. eCam is UL and DIN certified.

Other applications for eCam include trailers, mobile homes and RVs where it enables multiple locking/unlocking from a remote central point.

Each door latch/lock may be selected to suit the individual door so that it engages into the eCam. Variants of eCam include no-status-indicator, status-indicator-included or with-status-indicator-and-automatic-unlock in case of power failure. Supply voltage required is in the range 9V – 32V and emergency opening is facilitated by means of a bowden cable mounting kit if required. The “safety” version in particular opens up completely new applications in machine and switchboard cabinet construction. Due to the type approval according to EN ISO 14119 as “position switch, design type 1” (Machinery Directive) and EN ISO 13449 as “monitoring device with performance level d”, eCam can be used as a monitoring element for machine housings or switchboard cabinet doors. eCam signals an open door to a higher-level control system, which ensures that a machine is taken out of service or a cabinet is powered off.

A spring steel spine on a P section gasket is a simple, effective way to provide an excellent gasket function for enclosure and vehicle doors. To date this has been achieved with an EPDM bubble sealing profile attached to a PVC spring carrier, however now EMKA have developed an integral section which combines both in one EPDM moulding.

This integration provides many advantages – EPDM is itself a more dynamic material than PVC making it easier to fit while conforming to door contours and providing good temperature, UV and ozone resistance in service. At the same time, a unified moulding shows a cost benefit to installers, plus it is less hazardous in fire situations.

Hygienic Locking Systems for Food Industry and Medical Engineering

EMKA have extended their online Guidance notes for locks, handles, hinges and gaskets into the specialist areas of Food and Medical/Pharmaceuticals where hardware has to offer a high degree of sealing to cope with high-pressure wash-down cycles. EMKA hygiene locks set high standards for food industry equipment

Appearance and preference are crucial factors in the food industry. However, in order to produce the right product, state-of-the-art machinery and a sterile working environment are critical. And there is no reason why hygiene and modern design cannot go hand in hand, as EMKA and the renowned food machinery manufacturer Seydelmann from Aalen, Germany recently have proven. EMKA will equip eight types of Seydelmann machines with quarter-turn latches and locks.

Maschinenfabrik Seydelmann KG has been driving the development, production and sale of high-quality, high-performance cutters, mixers, grinders and ultra-fine shredders for the production of sausage and meat products for 175 years.

Since the hygiene regulations in the food industry are immensely high and new certifications are always necessary, it was essential to optimise specific machine components. The EMKA hygiene quarter-turn provided to be the optimal solution for a mix of price/performance, as the lock can be integrated into existing machines with little effort.

The quarter-turn complies with protection class IP69K. It is dustproof, even at low vacuum in the housing (<= 20mbar) and waterproof from four spray directions. The stainless steel components are robust and easy to clean, and can withstand the jet of a high-pressure cleaner, for example, to enable efficient “cleaning in place”. Single-factor, Multi-factor – front door, rear door linked data cabinet security

EMKA announce single and multi-factor authentication for linked front and back cabinet doors in data storage environments. Electromechanical invisible locking from EMKA with new ePush Lock

Externally invisible locking is offered by the new EMKA ePush-Lock, meeting the need for a comfortable non-handle locking system. This flat design style of internal locking handle is the trend for mobile homes and many other applications where it is advantageous to disguise opening panels.

The flap then opens automatically without further intervention. Extruded rubber profiles are used for sealing doors and panels in a variety of industries, including the aerospace, automotive, lighting, appliance, electronic, construction, marine, medical and general industrial applications. This section can be quite simple, i.e. circular, annular, rectangular profiles, or very complex (window profile, rubber car seal). Some common materials used in rubber extrusion include EPDM, SBR, (CR - Neoprene), Silicone, (NBR – Nitrile), and (NR- Natural rubber).

They are of particular value in connection with applications such as:

- Edge protection profiles, sealing profiles with and without metal carrier

- Sponge rubber profiles with and without bonding (Self-adhesive foam)

- Rubber glazing and filler profiles

- Dual Hardness rubber profiles

- Door sealing profiles

- Custom-made products, frames, rings, lengths, butyl, mastic, flock coating, notching, gluing, slip coating, etc.

For optimum effectiveness the compression of a typical sealing edge protection profile should be a maximum of 50% as otherwise the compression and recovery can be adversely affected. It is recommended the profile should be compressed 30-40%.

An excellent solution to the common problem of sealing corner joins is the use of spliced joints, this process effects a joint that is particularly effective where there is a requirement for a continuous ring or frame such as windows or automotive applications. Spliced joints ensure that the resilience and dynamic properties of the profile are maintained throughout the joint. Frames and rings can save greatly on assembly time while significantly enhancing sealing performance.

Specialist gasket sections are offered by many manufacturers in flame retardant, low smoke, low tox materials compliant to relevant standards while extruded gaskets for enclosures and other purposes are available in self-adhesive, self-grip (clip-on), channel fixing and window type (with expansion insert). The range includes EPDM, NBR, CR, PVC and silicone, as well as fire protection specifications and many with EMC compatible coating.

Specialist installations such as coaches, motor homes and caravans also require moulded sections to suit doors, windows and ventilation panels, as well as external storage compartments and often require specialist materials or finishes:

Flock coating – a scratch-free coating to provide a smooth sliding action popular for windows.
EMC (coating) – for electromagnetic compatibility to maintain or increase the protection of sensitive equipment from external EM radiation.
Vulcanising – a tough resilient way to form joints, frames and continuous sections.
Slipcoat – a simple coating process to redress the effect of friction.
Silicon – high temperature, fire resistant for rail, tunnels etc., also food industry.

In selecting the right mounting type for every installation situation we find that this is a decisive factor in a successful installation:-.

Self-clamping profiles have an internal steel or wire clamping band and thus ensure that the seal is held securely on the sheet edge.

Stamped or wire spiral carriers use steel or wire clamping strips, this enables edge protection profiles to retain well even without adhesive bonding. Steel strapping generally shows a higher clamping effect than wire strapping.

Plugged or insert profiles do not have a metal insert and are not glued, being self-retained. They are plugged into a gap or channel between two edges and safely seal the cavity in this way.

Clamping profiles are ideal for screwless insertion of windows. The use of a rubber clamping profile guarantees a firm, durable and rattle-free connection in many types of special panel, vehicles, mobile cabins and large machines.

Self-adhesive technology is particularly suitable for economical and quick fastening seals where the profile is glued onto a flat section with an adhesive strip which contains integrated cotton threads for a stretch-free installation.

With sealing profiles and clamping profiles made of 100 % EPDM EMKA have successfully enhanced gasket quality with high resistance to weathering, also UV radiation and acids, which makes them particularly durable – at no extra cost.

EMKA raises quality with gaskets made of 100% EPDM

EMKA UK is successively converting the material of their self-clamping gasket profiles to single piece mouldings in EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) replacing the previous two-part glued assembly of EPDM and (PVC). This means that EMKA gaskets have a significantly improved quality as the new mono-moulding has a broader thermal application range with higher resistance to weathering, UV radiation and acids, making the new sections particularly durable.

Without the need to join differing materials, more of the profile height is able to be compressed so that closure pressure may be reduced by up to 40% dependent on the actual section concerned, and latch operation is eased.

The new mono moulding sections feature more significant functional travel with hollow seals and lower compression force, while retaining the same equivalent insertion and retention force. They have better temperature ranges, now spanning from -40°C to +100°C, and short-term up to +130°C, with better UV resistance – they offer the possibility to produce vulcanised rings and frames for quicker assembly, improved sealing and reduced costs as well as the option to manufacture profiles according to UL, EN 45545-2 orVDI6022 standards with appropriate tooling.

Following from continuous investment and development in its extrusion technology, EMKA are able to make this conversion from EPDM + PVC to just EPDM as a cost-neutral change so the high-quality gaskets, which EMKA manufactures at its plants in Spain and England, can be offered at unchanged list prices.

EMKA offers a wide range of EPDM gaskets for enclosures and control cabinet design as well as for railway, air-conditioning and hygiene applications. Since the material has a high-pressure elasticity and excellent resilience, it is very well suited for sealing switch cabinets. After stretching or compression, the elastomer returns approximately to its original state. Cellular rubber profiles are soft, offer excellent contact surface with the housing at light pressure and thus provide an ideal seal. Many tolerances on the control cabinet door can therefore be accommodated. The engineers at EMKA have noted the growth of social and industrial dependence on internet cable connectivity while at the same time, it seems that there has been an increase in the scope of “street culture” which sees these cabinets as naturally vulnerable features of the public environment.

This has led them to focus on the issues of vandal resistance for locking outdoor cabinets which has (sadly) become a significant issue, and have responded with a range of swinghandles capable of resisting vandal attack to level RC2 (DIN EN 1630) and other solutions including electronic lock and release mechanisms which allow the door lock to be completely concealed within the cabinet. Pre-assembled gasket is ideal for rapid application to door frames or apertures such as skylights, vents, access panels in electrical/electronic cabinets or enclosures – also for vehicle OEMs for car, truck and coach doors, as well as for caravans, railway coaches and specialist vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks.

Standard shapes include butt joins and right-angle joins enabling rings and frames as well as combinations to be produced in steel inserted profiles. Assembly is very simple by pushing or knocking onto a flange.

EMKA Gaskets supplement EMC protection

EMC protection against transmission of electro-magnetic interference is a major design consideration for manufacturers of susceptible equipment, however this sometimes requires supplementation. The sheathed EMC gasket offered by EMKA can be a solution to this problem.

EMC versions of the EMKA 1016 gasket program in EPDM have a conductive external skin in order to attenuate the transmission of electro-magnetic interference across a sealed junction. In addition to EMC, typical applications for 1016 gasket range from gap sealing to noise reduction, e.g. from internal equipment; also vibration damping and impact cushioning on cabinets, furniture and machinery.

This conductive coated gasket and tape system provides a contiguous conductive pathway to ensure EMC performance on steel enclosures and cabinets where the original design did not provide sufficient EMC performance, or perhaps did not take it into consideration at all.

EMKA expands their folding T handle range

Traditional folding T handles offer a popular slimline and very effective solution to locking of panels and doors in many situations where space is limited. So as a market leader of innovative hardware, EMKA have developed their established products into a new range dedicated for use on heavy or oversized doors or flaps of up to 4 mm thickness This expanded range to IP65 now encompasses zinc die and stainless steel manually lockable units with high security automotive barrels as well as a padlockable version and an electro-mechanical central locking system.

EMKA folding T handles are of robust construction with high quality surface finishes that make them suitable for use in public visible areas on heavy flaps, doors, floor flaps, etc., for example on commercial and service vehicles, large HVAC units, generators and automation equipment. Closure is simply by pulling the T handle out from the body of the lock and turning, to operate the latching cam which can be either a roller design or a classic version made of steel or stainless steel in 5 mm material thickness.

The new robust dish handles are available in two different materials. In the first material variant, the dish and the handle are made of zinc die. Both components can be supplied chrome-plated or powder-coated – or in combination – depending on the customer’s requirements. The second variant comprises a stainless steel dish combined with zinc die or stainless steel T-handles.

The design of the opening mechanism offers user-friendliness, stability, and safety - in order to open the door, the T-handle is folded up out of the dish and turned 90°. There is a choice of two round cylinder variants – using either identical or different keys – furthermore, a padlock < Ø 8 mm and/or an enhanced 12 V central locking system can be used to lock the model series 10503. This ensures that essential doors can be secured with two or even three factor security. For robust longevity and easy operation, the large locking forces are absorbed by solid steel or stainless steel cams in various crankings or alternatively by a 20 mm adjustable roller cam. In order to prevent moisture and dirt from penetrating through the T-dish handle, a foam rubber seal is incorporated inside the chest handle, making it compliant with protection class IP 65.

Because of its large, robust design and high resistance to adverse weather conditions, the new EMKA heavy-duty T-dish handle can be used in many areas. The modern design with the flush-mounted lock and the high-quality surface finish also perfectly suits its scope of application on high end specialist equipment.

EMKA self-adhesive gaskets now certified for hygiene applications – also as punched sheet gaskets

EMKA Gasket Sealing Profiles for enclosures and other purposes are available in many thicknesses and widths of self-adhesive closed cell EPDM or Chloroprene rubber (CR) backed with non-stretch self-adhesive tape. EMKA announces in-house testing laboratory now accredited to highest international standards

EMKA has always believed it is important to support their standard and custom products with a comprehensive in-house testing facility. This has been a significant part of EMKA engineering over many years and now their Technology Centre has been accredited by the Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH – DAkkS) (The German National Accreditation Body) for ten selected test procedures. According to the standard DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, it confirms the capability of EMKA as a world market leader for locking devices, hinges and seals in the performance of material, life cycle and environmental simulation tests. Their test laboratory thus meets all legal and standards requirements at the highest international level.

The test laboratory is located in the company's technology centre, with allows EMKA to offer a wide range of measuring and testing procedures – always taking into account the high-quality requirements for locks, hinges and seals. The facility has extensive equipment: from the water jet and dust test system, a salt spray and climate chamber on a spectral analyser to the tensile tester. The focus is on numerous processes in the field of environmental simulation testing, technical and mechanical testing of fittings as well as material analysis and life tests.

Among other things, DAkkS examined the quality management system of EMKA, selected measuring equipment and the implementation of test procedures by trained personnel. In a technical audit and a system audit, DAkkS employees assessed the conditions in the EMKA Technology Centre. They also tested the expertise of the laboratory staff and issued the relevant notification after successful completion of the accreditation process. Subsequently, DAkkS confirmed that EMKA possesses technically trained personnel as well as the technical and organizational abilities to carry out selected tests in accordance with the relevant standards and regulations. Accredited to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, the test laboratory is now a conformity assessment body (CAB).

A suitable quality management system – which describes all process steps and structures in detail – is one of the prerequisites for the accreditation by DAkkS. Strict guidelines ensure that the correct test equipment is tested in suitable procedures and that all necessary measured variables, including measurement uncertainties, are included. In addition, a DKD calibration of relevant measuring equipment is necessary. “The accreditation by the independent, higher-level national accreditation body leads to a higher acceptance of products”, emphasises Dr. Thomas Koliwer, CTO at EMKA. “This gives customers greater confidence in the safety and quality of our test procedures and thus of our products.”

EMKA Fire Protection Gasket UL general purpose and DIN EN for Rail Industry

EMKA general purpose 1016 self-adhesive gasket is available in fire resistant versions to UL94 VO and 94HB ratings as an expanded closed-cell neoprene in stock strips from 3mm to 80mm thick and in standard widths from 10mm up to 80mm, with complete custom capability, e.g. for sheets and punched shapes.

The current measures in dealing with the Covid 19 pandemic have given rise to many expanded applications in the healthcare sector which call for hardware such as quarter turn locks. Insertable gasket profiles and associated cabinet locking hardware from EMKA

EMKA MD Andy Billingham recently pointed out that recessed enclosure and cabinet doors frequently call for careful selection of hardware such as internally mounted hinges in order to compliment the security offered by a recessed door. This is characterised by the achievement of very small gaps, so reducing the opportunity for use of any sort of forcing tool, such as a screwdriver. Applications include dust extraction systems, HVACR and outdoor installations.

Recessed doors frequently rely on channel mounted gasket which is designed to fit easily and to expand into the channel for better fit and seal when the door is closed. Being without a steel spine these sections are easier to handle and install with ends that can easily be joined for a full peripheral gasket with a complete seal and improved stability. This solution also removes the spine as a site of corrosion.

Locks for recessed doors can be selected from the many modular options available but would generally be chosen from the narrow formats which could include simple quarter turn locks or a lifthandle where rod locking is required – since lift handles tend to take up less space than swinghandles.

The aim is to minimise space used up by the hardware components so leaving more space on the door itself which also has to accommodate wide frame margins.

EMKA Quarter turn locks for specialist panel builders

The EMKA team explained recently that their expanding program of quarter turn locks and latches are very much targeted toward specialist panel and vehicle builders where rugged high performance is required – a good example being use on railway panels both lineside and on rolling stock, many of which are also required to include a visual indication of open/closed status. Other industrial sectors include specialist vehicles and food/pharmaceutical processing.

Many quarter turn cylinder locks feature shrouded key holes, and other versions come with an additional external cover to prevent ingress of dirt and water to the lock itself e.g., for heavy water spray or washdown areas. This applies also to hygiene locks which are required to meet the requirements of EHEDG and the FDA - these are special stainless steel designs with a high level of surface finish and no visible external bacteria traps. Additionally, they incorporate special blue silicone gasket to ensure hygienic sealing and to clearly demonstrate compliance.

Other special EMKA locks include those for floor panels in areas of heavy footfall or areas associated with transition of dirty foot-ware e.g., railway carriages, also horse boxes where it is imperative to keep dirt out of the lock mechanism while retaining the ability to protect and readily access important underfloor equipment.

Compression locks offer an additional level of sealing and vibration resistance which is especially valued for outdoor applications on rooftops or on exposed vehicles – e.g., gensets where the clamping action supports both the level of IP sealing required and the often-extensive lifetime of exposure. In particular the EMKA Compression Latch-Hinge is designed to meet the special needs of the HVAC industry with features that provide ease of assembly, adjustability, pressure differential accommodation, and flexibility for the end user. Once assembled to the door the EMKA compression latch can be adjusted to properly mate to the cabinet by moving both vertically and horizontally. Then after installation the alignment of the latch can be adjusted to eliminate leaks. The latch will then prevent the door from opening fully until pressure has been equalised.

The EMKA HVAC solution covers a package of program 1000 compression T handle latch/lock, or similar L handle or wing handle. These offer convenient quarter-turn operation with cylinder key lock, plus a full 6mm compression of the gasket, so guarding against spurious door opening under vibration conditions.

Heavy duty program 1046 weld-on or bolt-on hinges with concealed fittings and removable hinge pins accommodate both the weight of large doors and the need to remove them quickly – factors which can also call for adjustable hinges. Frequently the 1054 3D hinge is required to deal with this situation. Sealing of these doors is often best facilitated by use of the 1011-09 right angle clip-on EPDM profile strip with integral D section to prevent ingress of liquids and solids.

EMKA locking technology turns cargo bike into mobile safe

Supporting the evolution of an environmentally friendly, sustainable and mobile world, is the vision of a company called Urban Mobility, who have developed a special cargo pedelec with a secure goods attachment to meet the company’s vision. Their “UM CargoBike” is intended to replace bulky delivery vans and to ease excessive traffic from the downtown core of our many city centres. However, to ensure the same level of theft protection as a delivery van, Urban Mobility sought support from an expert in locking systems – and it found this expert in EMKA.

Few city centres are not choked with traffic for most of the day – it is recognised that across the European Union, road traffic will have accounted for one-fifth of emissions in 2022 and that among the many cars on these roads are many delivery vehicles. However, these vehicles are usually an obstacle to traffic, as they are often double-parked to deliver their packages speedily.

However double parking is detrimental not only to the flow of traffic but also to the environment – so in order to combat this congestion, entrepreneurs from the mechanical engineering and logistics sectors have joined forces and founded Urban Mobility GmbH. Their goal is to develop and produce new mobility concepts for urban areas – first fruit of this project is the UM CargoBike.

The CargoBike is designed to transport larger quantities and heavier loads in urban areas than could be accommodated on a normal bicycle. The pedelec runs on electricity and can move from A to B using cycle paths and roads. It is intended to serve commercial CEP (courier express parcel) service providers as an alternative to large bulky transport vans using a standard transport case with a volume of 2 m³ that stores the parcels safely.

The unit can transport up to 250 kg of goods and offers a rear door using simple snap locks which provides access to the cargo container. However, it was quickly recognised that additional locking would be required to ensure that packages could not easily be stolen from the parked bike when a delivery is made.

“Right from the first meeting with EMKA, we could put together the ideal locking solution for our CargoBikes from their extensive selection of individual components,” says Tilmann Rosch, Managing Director of Urban Mobility. “The prototypes arrived very quickly, and we could install them successfully”.

EMKA used a locking solution for the storage door and developed an optimised system based on a rod control mechanism for multiple interlocking. Three locking points inside the seal are connected with a flat rod made of stainless steel. Each of these points comprises a rod control for multiple interlocking (galvanised) systems in combination with a bearing bush, a righthand side end-stop (black glass-filled polyamide) and a stainless steel cam. The locking points can be opened by operating an L-handle quarter turn (black powder-coated). Since the quarter turn has an integrated lock, this provides increased protection against theft. Furthermore, the three locking points increase the resistance to violent attack.

The hinges are 180° hinge type 1056-U59 (die-cast aluminium). Here, Urban Mobility was quickly convinced by the difference in weight compared to stainless steel versions, as the company wanted the design of the CargoBike to be as light as possible. Urban Mobility wants to contribute to creating a more mobile, environmentally friendly and sustainable world. In addition, the system is compatible with a radio-frequency identification (RFID) locking system, which makes handling easier for the delivery person.
