An automotive parts manufacturer in Nottinghamshire has completed a management buyout 18 months after the appointment of a new managing director.

The management buyout at interflex in Langar is part of an ongoing expansion plan that has seen the company introduce new products as well as investing in new equipment and diversifying into other areas of manufacturing such as face masks.

Managing director Jim Griffin will now be taking the lead in the business with founder Pete Ryder remaining involved by supporting the team as required through his position as chairman of the group.

“Having run the business for almost two decades, I felt it was the right time to hand over the reins to a dynamic new team who will take the business forward into the next 20 years,” said Ryder. “I will be on hand to offer help and advice as needed but I have every confidence that Interflex will go from strength to strength under Jim’s leadership.”

As the former CEO of manufacturer the Autins Group, Griffin has a successful track record in expanding operations into new markets and locations.

Following a management buyout at Autins in 2006, he oversaw the opening of sites in Sweden, Germany and India as well as leading the company through a profitable flotation on the stock market.

He said: “I will be working closely with other members of our experienced management team, including our finance director Mark Cardnell and operations director Gary Brooker to continue developing the business, bringing some exciting plans for growth to fruition.

“In addition to maintaining the current product lines of automotive trim and acoustic insulation, Interflex are developing other new NVH products to meet the demanding requirements of the rapidly expanding electric vehicle sector. We are also preparing to move into new markets including rail and off road vehicles.”

Set up in 2003, Interflex currently supply a range of sealing solutions for the automotive sector including door seals, interior trim, under carpet and boot seals.

They also coat and cut materials such as the fabric used for arm rests to ensure durability and comfort.

The MD of Nottinghamshire based automotive manufacturing company Interflex has raised over £1500 for the Alzheimer’s Society by walking a marathon in memory of his late mother.

And what makes the achievement even more notable is the fact that MD Jim Griffin was given a ‘negligible’ chance of surviving a viral illness just four years ago. a well known figure in the automotive insulation industry, Jim has a long career in the sector in a range of senior roles.

Since his illness, 56 year old Jim has fought his way back to health, taking on the MD role at automotive parts manufacturer Interflex.

The fundraising Trek26 walking marathon, run by the Alzheimer’s Society was held in London in June and included many significant landmarks en route such as St Paul’s Cathedral and Big Ben.

Jim walked the route with his son-in-law Greg, a keen cyclist who has completed several cycle tours across Europe. The pair set off at 6.45 in the morning and Jim admits that the physical nature of the challenge was a tough one for him after recuperating from his illness. However, he was delighted to finish the course in eight hours – including a couple of pub-based pit stops along the way.

“It was a pretty warm day and so, although we wanted to finish the course in a reasonable time, we couldn’t resist dropping into a couple of nice pubs for a pint and a cool down under the air con,” Jim commented.

”I have to admit that the last three miles were pretty tough for some reason, but we finished it. We also walked further than 26.2 miles because we and some others walkers missed a marker and went the wrong way - so we actually walked 28.1 miles! It was particularly amazing to finish the distance after I had been so ill for a couple of years.”

Spurred on by his success, Jim is aiming to walk even further next year. “I recovered pretty quickly after the walk so I’m contemplating doing a 50 miler next year to really stretch myself!” he said.

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia and there are over half a million people in the UK living with the condition. While there is currently no cure, medication and targeted support can help sufferers and their families live more rewarding and comfortable lives.

Jim is MD of Interflex who are based in Langar in Nottinghamshire. The company manufacture a range NVH and sealing solutions for vehicles, including door seals, interior trim, under carpet and boot seals. they employ around 40 staff at the site.

Although Jim has already surpassed his original fundraising target, he is hoping to make the £2000 marker. To donate via Jim’s Just Giving page visit www.justgiving.com/team/Trek26London202126Miles-SaundersGriffin.

Interflex and their sister company Pinnacle PPE are inviting care homes in the East Midlands to nominate their care home heroes in a competition to win £500 worth of PPE for their organisation.

The competition is being run by the companies in recognition of the part played by the region’s care homes in dealing with Covid-19. They are offering a total of £5,000 worth of PPE.

Care homes can enter throughout November. Staff and managers are required to nominate individuals from their staff who have been Covid care home heroes during the pandemic, going above and beyond for residents in their care. To keep it local, to Interflex’s Nottinghamshire base, only homes in Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland will be eligible to enter.

There will be a total of nine runners up who will receive an individual prize of £50 worth of Buy a Gift vouchers for a range of experiences from afternoon tea to a supercar driving experience. There will also be an overall winner who will receive a £100 voucher.

In addition, Interflex and Pinnacle PPE have also donated over £5,000 worth of PPE including 10,000 type 2 face masks, 1,000 face visors and 5,000 aprons which will be awarded to the ten care homes where the Covid care home heroes work. That means each home will receive a prize worth £500 including 1,000 disposable face masks, 100 visors and 500 disposable aprons.

Jim Griffin, MD at Interflex explains why the company has decided to run the competition.

“Like many members of the public, I have watched in admiration and gratitude as care home staff across the country have carried on in very difficult and demanding conditions during the pandemic. Just like the NHS, these people have been risking their own health to care for others, yet many in the sector feel that their hard work hasn’t always been acknowledged by the authorities. We would like to help remedy that and to say thank you.”

The three-ply surgical style face masks, types 2 and 2R manufactured on site all conform to European standards and offer 98% bacterial filtration with a 40-hour wear time. The face visors are made from PET plastic with an adjustable headband and foam pad.

The closing date for entries is Monday 30th November, with the PPE distributed before Christmas. Entries are submitted via the company’s website at www.pinnacleppe.co.uk/ppe-giveaway/

Interflex is an automotive parts manufacturer but has diversified during the pandemic, setting up Pinnacle PPE to manufacture face masks and other items of PPE at its factory. The company has recently invested in new equipment which enables them to produce half a million face masks every week as well as a new packaging machine and upgraded production area to ensure a clean and safe manufacturing environment.

Better known in the automotive industry for making a range of NVH and sealing solutions for vehicles from door seals to under carpet to reduce the impact of air, water, dust and noise, Interflex also coat and cut materials such as the fabric used for arm rests.

Interflex, who make and supply a range of NVH and sealing solutions for vehicles including door seals, interior trim, under carpet and boot seals, has started 2021 on an optimistic note after investing in new equipment and taking on more staff during 2020.

Bucking the trend for staff redundancies, long furloughs and falling turnover, the Nottinghamshire based manufacturer was able to re-open their factory in May before the end of the first lockdown, bringing back most of their workers at that point, as well as investing £140k in new equipment, taking on new staff and turning a profit during the year.

Expanding services with diversification

The company achieved this by diversifying into PPE production when automotive manufacturing temporarily shut down in the UK during spring 2020. They now manufacture masks, face shields and aprons alongside a range of NVH and sealing solutions for vehicles, including door seals, interior trim, under carpet and boot seals at their 38,000sq. ft. site.

As part of the plan to expand services, Interflex purchased specialised machinery in the latter half of 2020 which enabled them to manufacture up to half a million three-ply surgical style face masks every week. They also invested in a new packaging machine to ensure they have capacity to cope with demand along all aspects of the production and supply process.

Emmploying new staff to meet demand

As a result, Interflex was able to take on two new staff at the end of 2020 and is also looking to appoint a trainee project engineer and a trainee process engineer via the Kickstart programme, a government funded initiative to support businesses in employing young people.

One of the new appointments was commercial director Paul Neale who has extensive experience working in the automotive manufacturing industry and has been brought in to help Interflex continue with their drive for expansion. The company is also planning to take on their first apprentice during 2021 as well as up to four additional staff to help meet demand.

A managing director’s vision

MD Jim Griffin came into post just two weeks before the first national lockdown and oversaw the investment and diversification project, which included the creation of a subsidiary company, Pinnacle PPE to manage PPE operations and production.

“No one can deny that 2020 was a tough year for manufacturers, with the automotive industry hit pretty hard,” Jim comments. “So, when the first national lockdown was announced, we decided to take a proactive approach rather than sit around waiting for things to improve - which is why we invested in PPE production. It was a good fit for our current site, staff skills set and equipment.”

Great prospects for 2021

Ten months after the first national lockdown, Jim is optimistic about the company’s prospects in 2021.

“We are delighted to have been able to make profit and to actually take on staff during 2020 despite periods of enforced closure and the significant investment required to set up completely new production lines,” he says. “As we enter 2021, we have new processes and operations set up and are able to plan for the coming year rather than reacting to circumstances which means we can build on the foundations put in place during the last year.”

Interflex, who manufacture high performance NVH parts and sealing solutions for the automotive industry, has launched a new range of recycled materials suitable for use in a variety of sectors.

The Nottinghamshire company is using the Ocean brand of materials to manufacture acoustic automotive products designed to reduce noise and vibration in vehicles.

Already approved for use at a major OEM, Ocean is lightweight, mouldable and made from a minimum of 75% recycled polyester. It can also be recycled at the end of its life, making it a sustainable solution for NVH issues.

Ocean can be used for a variety of interior and exterior applications from headliners to parcel shelves. Although currently being used in vehicle manufacture, it has potential for use in a range of industries including rail, roadways and construction.

“We are excited to be launching this innovative new product which has already attracted significant interest from large manufacturers in the automotive industry,” comments Jim Griffin, MD of Interflex. “Not only is it a high performance acoustic absorbent material, but its lightweight properties also make it an ideal product for manufacturers looking to reduce weight in vehicle production.”

The launch of Ocean is part of the company’s drive to introduce more sustainable materials into the automotive supply chain. It is also part of a plan to expand into new markets.

Jim explains: “With its high performance properties, Ocean can be used for a wide range of purposes and industries where weight and noise is an issue. As experts in converting materials, the team at Interflex is ideally placed to take Ocean into completely new markets.”

Interflex currently manufacture a range of NVH and sealing solutions for vehicles including door seals, interior trim, under carpet and boot seals. They also coat and cut materials such as the fabric used for arm rests. Set up in 2003, the company employs over 40 staff at its 38,000 sq. ft. site.

Interflex MD appears on BBC News at Six to appeal for government help for UK business

This week, Interflex MD Jim Griffin appeared on BBC1’s News at Six to make the case for British business as chancellor Rishi Sunak addressed the 2020 Conservative Party Conference. Jim’s comments come at a crucial moment for businesses across the UK as the government’s furlough scheme winds up while Covid-19 continues to spike, triggering new lockdown restrictions across vast swathes of the UK.

Help is needed now

Rishi Sunak used his conference speech to talk about a message of hope and to emphasise the government’s responsibility to ‘balance the books’ for future generations. However, during the report Jim Griffin brought the focus back to the very real issues being faced by business in the here and now by sending a clear message to the chancellor that business is in need of help immediately, not at some unspecified point in the future.

Resilience and recovery

The report by the BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg, showcased Interflex’s diversification into PPE during the pandemic, proving that far from sitting back and waiting to be bailed out, Interflex employed a proactive and positive approach to the pandemic.

“The furlough scheme enabled us to pay staff as lockdown hit. We were then able to bring those employees out of furlough as we diversified from the manufacture of car parts into PPE,” explains Jim. “However, although we appreciated the help available and we didn’t underestimate the huge cost of giving that support, it is an unavoidable fact that far from being out of the woods, businesses across the UK are facing an uncertain winter as the virus continues to spike and new restrictions are imposed. The bottom line is UK businesses still need help.”

Overcoming obstacles

Jim’s comments to Laura Kuenssberg follow an interview she did with him in April when he talked on BBC1’s News at Six about the fact that although Interflex 2000 were ready, able and willing to manufacture much-needed PPE, government red tape at the time was preventing them from supplying it to the medical sector. This issue was eventually overcome alongside all the other pandemic-related hurdles the company was navigating, resulting in the creation of Pinnacle PPE which is now able to supply PPE to medical, retail, salon, hospitality and private settings.

What’s next for UK business?

As the lockdown restrictions caused by the second spike in Covid-19 cases continue, business owners across the UK are facing a tough and uncertain winter ahead.

“Like many businesses across the UK, we have fought hard not just to survive but to diversify in the face of Covid-19,” continues Jim. “It was for this reason that I felt it was so important to get the message out there on the national news that for UK business, now is the problem, not the middle of next year. I very much hope that the chancellor will listen to my appeal for British business and not waste all the work done to support us during the summer at this critical moment.”

“We are delighted to achieve this certification, which proves our commitment to demonstrating high levels of compliance and improving our processes to prevent defects and reduce unnecessary waste as we strive to create an ever more efficient and sustainable production line and supply chain,” comments Interflex’s Managing Director Jim Griffin.

Evidence of high performance manufacturing

The IATF 16949:2016 certification was developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) and consolidates and supersedes existing US, German, French and Italian automotive quality system standards to create a truly global industry standard that enables automotive supply companies to expand their client base internationally.

“Another great benefit of IATF 16949:2016 is that it opens additional doors to us internationally,” continues Jim Griffin. “As a designer and manufacturer of sustainable and lightweight materials for the automotive market and beyond, we have a lot to offer to manufacturers around the world. This certification means our valued clients at home and abroad can have faith in our ability to supply them efficiently with the high-quality products they depend on us for.”

Commitment to automotive excellence

The new certification is in addition to Interflex’s existing BSI standards ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management) and 14001:2015 (Environmental Management), which also demonstrate the company’s commitment to a streamlined and eco-conscious production process.

Interflex have almost 20 years of experience manufacturing innovative NVH solutions for the motor industry. Recently the company has introduced Ocean, a sustainable and lightweight material that is already being used in the automotive industry.

Founded over 100 years ago, BSI is the market leader in providing standards to over 80, 000 businesses in 193 countries.

The MD of manufacturing company Interflex has taken on the challenge of walking a marathon in memory of his late mother – just four years after being told his chances of surviving a viral illness were negligible.

Jim Griffin, who took on the position of managing director at the Nottinghamshire business last year, is embarking on the Trek26 event in London on Saturday 5th June organised by the Alzheimer’s Society. Jim’s mother Dulcie died of Alzheimer’s in 2014 aged 84.

He comments: “Due to the cruel nature of the disease, we really lost my mum a good five years before she died. Reading up on the subject, due to the genetic element of the illness, it’s also likely that any of my four siblings or myself could suffer from this dreadful illness too.”

Taking in the sights and supporting charity

The socially distanced walk will take the trekkers past some of London’s most iconic landmarks, including St Paul’s Cathedral and Trafalgar Square as well as out towards the east of the city taking in Spitalfields and Brick Lane.

Many charities have struggled since the advent of Covid as donations have fallen. In addition, many fundraising events which are such an important source of charitable income, have been cancelled due to lockdown and safety concerns around social distancing.

Having a ‘can do’ attitude

In addition to raising funds and awareness for a charitable cause, Jim has other personal reasons for taking on the challenge. After suffering from a potentially life-threatening viral infection which prevented him from working for two years, Jim is eager to regain his previous levels of fitness.

“Although I’m fully recovered and raring to go after my illness, this trek also represents an opportunity to push myself and to focus on improving my overall fitness. I want to do all I can to help ensure I’m around for as long as possible for my family as four years ago I wasn’t sure I would be! although I’m now recovered, this will be a significant challenge for me - and just like in my business life I don’t like to do things by halves.”

Three decades in the automotive industry

Jim, who was CEO at the Autins Group having worked at the company for 29 years before ill health forced him to step down. He became MD at Interflex in 2020, just days before the first national lockdown was imposed and the effects of the pandemic hit the automotive industry with a vengeance.

Jim will be walking with his son-in-law Greg, a keen cyclist who has completed several arduous cycle rides across Europe. “I love the idea of doing this challenge together, making it a real family affair. But I just hope he can keep up with me!” Jim adds.

Jim is also hoping to raise funds by including logos on their T-shirts in return for a donation from connected businesses whose logo will then be seen across London and associated with supporting a great cause.

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia and there are over half a million people in the UK living with the condition. While there is currently no cure, medication and targeted support can help sufferers and their families live more rewarding and comfortable lives.

A team from Interflex travelled northwards to showcase the company’s new range of sustainable materials for vehicles at an industry event in Sunderland this month.

As manufacturers of lightweight parts to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) in vehicles, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ (SMMT) Regional Forum offered an ideal audience of automotive industry contacts. The event was held at the Stadium of Light on 5th May.

Introducing innovative materials

The forum gave Interflex the opportunity to introduce a new range of greener materials developed to enhance acoustic absorption. The lightweight range of materials, known as Ocean, is part of the company’s drive to create a more sustainable supply chain using recycled and recyclable materials on the production line.

Jim Griffin, MD of Interflex felt that the event offered an exciting opportunity for industry influencers to see for themselves how sustainable materials can be used to improve performance and reduce costs.

Meeting changing automotive needs

“The needs of the automotive industry are constantly evolving, with customers increasingly demanding greener vehicles,” he comments. “The Ocean range of materials was developed specifically to meet that demand as we believe the necessary switch towards greener driving should involve all aspects of the vehicle’s design, not just an electric engine.”

Jim was also pleased to be able to meet buyers and suppliers in person, commenting: “After so much time spent online over the last two years, it’s great to be back at face to face events. We can demonstrate the qualities of our sustainable products so much more clearly in person. Plus, the opportunity to network is crucial in business – and it’s something we have very much missed.”

Promoting sustainability in the supply chain

Ocean is made from 75% recycled polyester and is also recyclable at the end of its long lifespan. It also has the added benefit of being manufactured in the UK and Europe, which also reduces the supply chain carbon footprint.

The SMMT forum attracted personnel from the automotive industry who heard about how the sector is responding to the challenges of net zero, levelling up opportunities and the development of new products and technologies. Alan Johnson, vice president of Nissan UK Sunderland Plant, gave the keynote address to delegates and speakers included Dr Graham Hoare, CEO and President of BritishVolt and Prof James Widmer, CEO of Advanced Electric Machines.

Nottinghamshire automotive parts manufacturer Interflex has landed a £254,000 grant as part of a programme offering £16m funding from the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

The cash is awarded as part of the NMCL Automotive Programme which was developed by an ADS Group- and Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT)-led consortium.

Interflex manufactures a range of NVH and sealing solutions for vehicles, including door seals, interior trim, under the carpet, and boot seals.

The award will fund 50% of £500,000 project to bring in external sources with specific expertise to train, coach and mentor the Interflex team across a range of aspects of the business. The training programme is part of the company’s expansion plans which will see Interflex enter new sectors such as rail, aerospace, bus, and trucks. The company is also aiming to expand into overseas markets.

Managing director Jim Griffin said: “This is an exciting time for Interflex. We have risen to some tough challenges over the last 12 months and have emerged a more flexible and efficient operation as a result. Covid did delay our planned expansion into new markets, but with systems working effectively and the valuable cash injection that the award has given us, now is the perfect time to start putting these exciting plans into practice.”

Elements of the training programme will support Interflex in its attempt to gain the IATF16949 Quality Standard, a global quality management system developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF). Achieving the standard involves a range of rigorous procedures and requires certification by a third-party auditor.

Interflex, who manufacture parts for the automotive industry, has announced the results of a competition they ran to recognise and reward the work carried out by care home staff during Covid-19.

The company ran the competition in conjunction with their sister company Pinnacle PPE, offering £500 worth of PPE to the wining care home and a £100 voucher for the home’s individual 'Care Home Hero’.

The winning care home was Church Farm Nursing Home in Cotgrave, Nottinghamshire, with their deputy manager Rachael Twist awarded the voucher for her outstanding work during the pandemic.

Going the extra mile

Rachael was nominated by home manager Jack Titterton, who said, “I nominated Rachael as she has covered day and night shifts above and beyond the call of duty. This has helped to keep us at zero agency staff throughout the pandemic and therefore reduced the risk of Covid-19 entering the home. Even at short notice Rachael has covered to make sure the people we love and support are safe and well cared for. Not only that Rachael continues to keep a smile on her face and go above and beyond for everyone at our home, so this is a great way of recognising her continued hard work!”

Recognising dedication and hard work

Interflex and Pinnacle PPE decided to run the competition to recognise the care industry, whose commitment and sacrifice to their residents has at times been overlooked during the pandemic. Interflex MD Jim Griffin says, “We are delighted to give this prize to Rachael Twist who is an incredibly deserving winner. Since the pandemic began, professionals like Rachael have been working tirelessly in incredibly challenging and quickly changing circumstances. Not only that, they have not always been given the same recognition as NHS workers. So, for that reason, we are very happy to recognise and reward Rachael, who should be very proud of everything she has done over the last ten months and continues to do every day.”

Interflex made the decision to set up Pinnacle PPE in response to the acute shortage of PPE experienced in the care and medical sectors during the first lockdown. Since then, the new company has risen to the challenge to establish itself as a supplier of high-grade PPE that meets all-important UK safety standards.

Church Farm Nursing Home will receive 1,000 disposable face masks, 100 visors and 500 disposable aprons. Rachael Twist will be able to choose from experiences ranging from afternoon tea to a supercar driving experience.

Commenting on her win, Rachael said, “It was a lovely surprise to find out Jack had nominated me for this award and even nicer to find out I had won! Obviously as a business we are getting through large amounts of PPE at the moment, so the extra supplies will come in very useful. And I am very much looking forward to using my experience voucher when the opportunity arises.”

Inteffelx MD Jim Griffin comments: "As manufacturers of innovative NVH solutions for the automotive industry, Interflex has a long track record of adapting to change and responding to new demand, so although the creation of Pinnacle PPE was a big challenge, it was one we knew we could achieve."

In order to manufacture face masks and other items of PPE in the ‘clean room’ of the Interflex factory, the company recently invested in new equipment enabling the production of half a million face masks every week as well as a new packaging machine and upgraded production area to guarantee a clean and safe manufacturing environment.

For more information about PPE or to visit the web shop, go to www.pinnacleppe.co.uk/.

In addition to manufacturing NVH insulation materials for the automotive industry, Interflex has adapted part of its factory to supply specialist PPE for frontline workers in response to the national shortage.

The company re-opened its site in May in accordance with government regulations, bringing back some of its furloughed workforce. Although the factory is still manufacturing vehicle components, there has been a reduction in demand since restrictions around Covid-19 were introduced. However, the requirement for PPE has soared across a range of settings from hospitals and care homes to supermarkets and offices.

As a result, Interflex is now making and supplying a range of protective equipment including recyclable face shields suitable for healthcare staff as well as disposable masks, ear protectors and face visors.

Jim Griffin, MD at Interflex explains that the transition was relatively straightforward. “Inevitably it will take some time for the automotive manufacturing sector to recover from the enforced shut down so although we are still producing NVH components, we have also adapted part of our factory for the specific production of PPE. Fortunately, our staff have the necessary transferable skills and so it seemed a logical step.”

Jim also believes that it’s important that organisations seeking PPE should be able to source it from the UK. “We have such great manufacturing facilities here in the UK, it seems crazy to hear of health trusts and businesses having to buy from abroad when we can supply so quickly. It’s crucial to support British manufacturing and the UK economy as a whole.”

In normal times, Interflex make and supply a range of NVH and sealing solutions for vehicles including door seals, interior trim, under carpet and boot seals. They also coat and cut materials such as the fabric used for arm rests.

The PPE initiative has been very successful so far. “We already have orders going out to a range of organisations and have a healthy sales pipeline,” adds Jim. “We are particularly pleased to be able to offer recyclable face shields which offer high levels of protection in health and social care settings.”

The company has also set up an e-commerce website enabling companies and procurement staff to buy directly online at https://shop.interflex2000.com/.

Interflex introduces new sustainable materials into production line

Automotive parts manufacturer Interflex has made sustainability a key driver within the business by increasing the use of recycled materials and natural fibres on their production line.

Interflex have been making NVH parts and sealing solutions for the automotive industry for 30 years and have now introduced new ranges of recycled and recyclable materials to create a more sustainable supply chain and to meet the aim of reducing its carbon footprint.

Materials for the automotive and horticulture industries

Although best known for working in the automotive industry, the new materials

Ocean and Mulchii™ have very diverse uses. Ocean is a polyester fibre used in the manufacture of acoustic absorbers designed to reduce noise and vibration in vehicles. Mulchii™ is a material made from hemp or jute and is used to make Mulchii™ Bio-Mats which help create optimal growth conditions for newly planted trees.

Interflex’s MD Jim Griffin explains: ”We have long focused on the cost effective use of materials to meet cost and performance demands as well as reducing weight in vehicles to make them more economical. So, it seemed like a natural extension to develop and use recycled materials in our products. We aim to be one of the most eco-conscious manufacturers in the automotive sector, as well as expanding the use of these products into other areas.”

Using 80% recycled materials

Ocean is made from a minimum of 80% recycled polyester and can be recycled at the end of its lifespan. Lightweight and mouldable, it can help reduce shape complexity which cuts tooling costs and enables better utilisation of materials. Ocean is also heat sealable, as well as water and oil resistant and is already improving levels of recyclability at the end of a vehicle’s life.

Because Mulchii™ Bio-Mats are made from flax or hemp which can be grown in the UK and Europe, they have a smaller carbon footprint and are easier to source than the commonly-used coconut fibre which is expensive and grown further afield in locations such as India. Mulch mats allow trees to access nutrients and moisture as needed, helping to prevent roots from freezing during the winter. They also eliminate threats to healthy growth by suppressing weeds and providing protection from pests.

Creating a greener supply chain

“As a responsible manufacturer aware of the potentially catastrophic implications of climate change, we are always looking for ways to make our supply chain and production line greener,” adds Jim.

“The products we make are important in reducing our carbon footprint. Ocean helps reduce weight in cars and which is significant in terms of maximising energy efficiency. Mulchii™ Bio-Mats help create better conditions for saplings to grow – and as we know. planting more trees helps offset the negative effects of climate change. Now we have further extended our sustainability policy by ensuring that the materials we use have great environmental credentials too.”

Ocean is manufactured by Nottinghamshire-based company Interflex which is best known for making products that reduce NVH in the automotive industry. Over the past couple of years, the company has focused on manufacturing sustainable products to ensure a greener supply chain.

Ocean is already approved for use at a major OEM and is now being rolled out inro other industries where the management of NVH is an issue.

One such sector is the UK rail industry where the material can be used to reduce noise, vibration and harshness in railway carriages and to enhance sound absorption in electric and diesel power units.

Ocean can also be used to enhance sound and thermal insulation between the inner and outer walls of leisure vehicles such as caravans and mobile homes. It can also provide an enhanced thermal barrier within interior walls and engine bays in boats and other seafaring vessels.

Creating a more sustainable supply chain

Ocean is lightweight, mouldable and made from 100% polyester, 80% of which is recycled materials (1kg being equivalent to 80 recycled plastic water bottles). It can also be recycled at the end of its life, making it a sustainable solution for diverse industries.

“We are excited to be launching this innovative new product for the rail, leisure and maritime industries which has already attracted significant interest from large manufacturers,” comments Jim Griffin, MD of Interflex. “Not only is Ocean a high-performance acoustic absorbent material, but its lightweight properties also make it ideal for manufacturers looking to reduce weight.”

Interflex Aim to Produce 500,000 Face Masks a Week

MIM member Interflex Ltd has installed new equipment which enables them to produce half a million face masks every week as part of the company’s expansion into the PPE market.

Interflex, An automotive parts manufacturer in Nottinghamshire, is known in the automotive industry for making a range of NVH and sealing solutions for vehicles from door seals to under carpet to reduce the impact of air, water, dust and noise. Working mainly with OEMs and Tier 1 and 2 suppliers, the firm also coats and cuts materials such as the fabric used for armrests.

However, with automotive production still recovering from the measures imposed to manage Covid-19, the company has now diversified into other areas that complement their staff skills base and production facilities.

The purchase and installation of specialised machinery in September have enabled Interflex to manufacture three-ply surgical style face masks, types 2 and 2R. The disposable masks conform to European standards and offer 98% bacterial filtration with 40-hour wear time.

Jim Griffin, managing director of Interflex explains that the process of switching parts of the factory to PPE production required additional training, but that it was relatively straightforward to set up a new production line.

“Although we have a well-established staff who are experienced in manufacturing insulation parts, they have had instruction in using the new equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation,” he said. “The machine was bought from China and modified to ensure that the masks meet regulatory requirements as well as the demanding quality standards that we have in the UK.”

Griffin added that the expansion into PPE production was a natural fit for the business. He said: “The selection of materials has been key to ensure that we have a high quality, traceable product, so we have sourced all our materials from the EU. However, as a British manufacturer, we aim to source all the materials in the UK over the next few months to ensure a reliable domestic supply chain using British materials, with British assembly to meet UK standards.”

The company has also invested in a new packaging machine and a revamped production area which enables the segregation of mask production from the rest of the factory to ensure a clean manufacturing environment, from production through to sealed packaging.

With the facility to supply printed three-ply masks, Interflex is also looking at producing a seasonal range of disposable masks for Christmas, as well as fashion prints and bespoke corporate branding including logos and sports team colours. Products are sold under the Pinnacle brand which was created especially for the production and distribution of PPE.

Griffin says that all staff are back from furlough and at the site in Langar, production of both automotive components and PPE is in full swing.

He said: “The diversification into PPE has supplemented our work in the automotive sector and production is currently split 50/50. With the new machine enhancing production capacity, we anticipate this to continue for the foreseeable future.”

As part of the drive to supply sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) to workers across different industries, Interflex has set up production of a range of PPE suitable for use by health and social care workers, as well as other frontline personnel.

The range of Interflex PPE currently includes recyclable face shields suitable for healthcare staff as well as disposable3 ply face masks, ear protectors and face visors. All equipment is suitable for frontline staff, including:

Shop workers

Office workers

People working in the entertainment or hospitality industries

Members of the public

All equipment conforms to British safety standards and many products are available immediately.

Sustainability in mind – the recyclable face shield

The recyclable face shield has been developed specifically with sustainability and safety in mind as an alternative to disposable face masks.

Recent media reports have raised concerns around an increase in littering as PPE is irresponsibly discarded. Both environmental and public health organisations are concerned by this rise in litter as it poses a significant health risk as well as being anti-social and unsightly.

Very little PPE is biodegradable. However, the Interflex recyclable face shield is made from 100% recyclable and compostable cardboard and FSE certified wood products. The PET visor can be peeled away enabling recycling of the separate parts.

“As the economy opens up with shops, services and businesses welcoming customers back, the need for staff to protect both themselves and the general public is paramount,” comments Jim Griffin, MD at Interflex, “Demand for PPE looks likely to continue to rise and it seems counterproductive to source products from abroad when we have such great manufacturing facilities here in the UK. We would urge health trusts and businesses to buy British and support the UK manufacturing industry.”

The transition to manufacturing PPE alongside the NVH parts that Interflex is more well known for producing was relatively straightforward as much of the equipment can also be used in PPE manufacture. Staff skills were also easily transferable, enabling Interflex to bring back many of its furloughed staff.

Order today for quick, easy delivery

PPE can be ordered via phone, email or our new web shop.

Automotive parts manufacturer Interflex has created the new role of commercial director as part of the company’s diversification and expansion strategy.

The Nottinghamshire based business appointed Paul Neale to the post at the end of 2020. Paul brings with him over 15 years of experience working in the automotive and manufacturing industry, including senior sales and consultancy positions.

Interflex manufacture and supply a range of NVH and sealing solutions for vehicles including door seals, interior trim, under carpet and boot seals. They also coat and cut materials such as the fabric used for arm rests. Since the advent of the pandemic, the company has set up a subsidiary operation Pinnacle PPE to manufacture PPE alongside automotive production.

Paul’s role at Interflex involves overseeing the sales, marketing and commercial sectors of the business, as well as co-ordinating the overall commercial direction of the business. Interflex are aiming for continued growth in existing automotive markets, as well as launching their products into complementary industries such as construction, rail and aerospace.

“I’m delighted to be working in this exciting new role at Interflex; the team has been very welcoming,” Paul comments. “We have already developed our product portfolio and branding which will lay the foundations to create profitable and sustainable growth year on year within automotive and other key industries. We are also launching an innovative new product, so it’s all systems go for the business.”

One of Paul’s major projects is leading the launch of Interflex’s new acoustic absorber. Known as Ocean, the new lightweight absorber is made from a minimum 75% recycled product. It can also be recycled at the end of its life, making it a sustainable solution for NVH issues.

Having spent almost a decade working in the development of acoustic and thermal products at a previous company, Paul is experienced in implementing new product lines, even expanding into European markets. He also has experience in developing intergroup business and driving growth through group branding and marketing.

Interflex’s MD Jim Griffin has worked with Paul before when he was CEO of Autins and Paul was the senior sales manager. He is pleased to have Paul on board at Interflex.

“Paul’s experience and skill set is perfectly suited to this new role,” Jim comments. “Despite the challenges of 2020, we have emerged strongly into 2021, with new high performance products to launch and with new markets in our sights. Paul has the expertise to take the business forward in an exciting new direction.”

Interflex expands into horticulture market with new product range

Manufacturing company Inteflex, who are best known for making NVH and sealing solutions for the automotive industry, has announced their expansion into new markets.

The Nottinghamshire-based company has launched a range of biodegradable mulch mats for trees and strawberry plants which it will be selling to the horticulture and arboriculture industries amongst others.

Giving saplings the best start

Known as the Mulchii™ range, the mulch mats are used when planting young trees to create better conditions for growth by allowing access to essential nutrients, retaining moisture and helping to keep roots insulated during the winter months. The mats can help to suppress weeds and provide protection from pests. They also help reduce soil erosion and compaction.

With two decades of experience manufacturing vehicle parts such as headliners, interior trims, under carpet and door seals to help make vehicles quieter and more efficient, the diversification into horticulture might seem a little surprising. However, as Jim Griffin, MD of Interflex explains, the decision was based on sound business principles.

“One of the key rules of diversification is to build on what you already know and do well,” comments Jim. “At Interflex we know all about materials and using them to manufacture high performance products. So, although we have traditionally supplied the automotive industry, we already have skilled staff and high tech equipment on site which has made it a relatively simple process to diversify into the manufacture of mulch mats.”

A logical diversification

The materials used to create the mats are very similar to the current products that Interflex make and so the company is able to utilise their press cutting and packaging facilities without any modifications. As a result, the company has the capacity to produce over 20,000 pieces a day per machine and so can accommodate large bulk orders.

The Mulchii™ mat is the first product in a range that is planned to include hanging baskets and hydroponic mats. The mulch mats are made from flax, jute and hemp which has several advantages over other products commonly used such as coconut fibre.

Promoting sustainability in the supply chain

“Coconut fibre is currently hard to source as well as being expensive,” explains Jim. “However, flax and hemp are high performance materials which can be grown within the UK and Europe, making the raw materials easier to obtain and transport.”

The importance of planting new trees is recognised as a key part of the government’s pledge to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, It is also the focus of campaigns by organisations such as the National Trust and the Woodland Trust, while the Queen’s Green Canopy and Trees for Cities is a campaign to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Set up in 2003, Interflex supply a range of NVH and sealing solutions for the automotive sector from their Nottihamshire factory. They also coat and cut materials such as the fabric used for arm rests to ensure durability and comfort.

Coming soon….

Please note: the Mulchii™ website is coming soon. Until the website is launched, please direct any enquiries to Interflex by emailing sales@interflex2000.com or calling 01949 861 494.

Interflex MD part of expert manufacturing panel

The MD of Interflex was part of a panel of manufacturing experts talking about the future of manufacturing in the Midlands which took place in online November.

Jim Griffin became MD of Interflex earlier this year, just prior to the first national lockdown. With over a career spanning three decades working in the automotive manufacturing industry, Jim has a wealth of experience to draw on, including leading a previous company successfully through the last economic downturn and then floating it on the stock market.

The panel was part of the Getting Back on Track: How to safeguard manufacturing in a post-Covid world webinar run by the Business Desk. An audience in excess of 100 people joined the seminar to hear the experts’ views on how the manufacturing industry can survive and thrive in the “new normal”.

Members of the panel discussed how Midlands manufacturers need to look to future and to understand how the world will have changed between now and 2022.

Jim was joined by other panel members which included Johnathan Dudley and Emma Clews of audit, tax advisory and risk firm Crowe as well as Stephen Morley, president of the Confederation of British Metalforming and Steve Hardeman, managing director of Clevedon Fasteners.

Jim Griffin explained that although the automotive manufacturing industry had been hard hit by lockdown, the immediate future for Interflex was looking good. The situation had been helped by the fact that the company has diversified into manufacturing PPE, setting up sister company Pinnacle PPE.

He commented: “Our biggest risk is what happens to the car industry. But we’re confident for next year. We’ve been lucky in that we’ve been able to invest our own cash into the business and we’re looking to pump even more of that money in next year.”

Johnathan Dudley from Crowe warned that returning to work will not be a simple “switch on” as many businesses will have to revise their processes and ways of working. He said: “Business owners need to visualise where their companies will look like next year and the year after that. Things might well be different in the marketplace.

He also echoed Jim’s optimism saying: “However, I’m confident for the future. Manufacturing led the way out of the first lockdown, and it can do the same the second time around.”

Stephen Morley, president, Confederation of British Metalforming expressed his fears around the “long difficult road ahead” for Midlands manufacturing, and his concerns that the government isn’t fully on board with the support that is needed to help the sector thrive again, raising the issue of Brexit as well as Covid.

He added: “What I fear is that some manufacturers are waiting until there is some clarity over whether there will be a deal with the EU or not. I’d say they have to start planning now – but many are already well behind.”

During Jim’s time working in automotive manufacturing, he has been shortlisted for the Guardian Small Business Leader of the Year and has also won the EEF Manufacturing Champion for the Midlands award. In addition, Jim was awarded a Visiting Industrial Fellowship by Aston Business School in recognition of his contribution to business growth and entrepreneurship.
