The machine, to be supplied by Trumpf, will be the twelfth laser cutting system supplied to them by the German based manufacturer since their first purchase twenty-one years ago. they also utilise Trumpf pressbrakes and a Trumpf marking system.

Also, this month, the company has introduced new software across the business which will, ultimately, improve production and provide benefits for their customers. The software, SigmaNest/MRP will control all aspects of the business from estimating through to invoicing.

Managing Director, Dave Lindsey says "the effects of the crash in 2008 meant that we haven't been able to maintain the levels of investment that we had before but we are, hopefully, back on track and are looking forward to a period of sustained growth. We have always been committed to providing the best possible service to our customers and these latest investments will ensure that we continue to do that."

A Cannock laser cutting firm is celebrating its 25th year in business by looking for fresh opportunities in the infrastructure sector - particularly in the rail industry.

Laser Process was launched in the year Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, the US and UK invaded Iraq, Nelson Mandela was released from prison and the UK was witnessing poll tax riots.

Managing director Dave Lindsey said: “Ever since day one we have been a leading company in the industry and have grown to be one of the biggest.

“In 1995 we were a founding member of the Association of Industrial Laser Users (AILU) and in 1999 we became accredited to BS 9001 for quality management.”

Based on the Upper Keys Business Park, the company has continued to invest in the latest equipment, he said.

“Compared to the machines available when we started, those of today are bigger, more powerful and faster and the cut quality is better.

“Over the years we have added processes to compliment laser cutting. Many years ago we introduced pressbrakes in order that we could supply our customers with plates that were bent after cutting, saving them from having to find a second supplier to complete their requirements. Since that time we have introduced a vertical machining centre to offer drilling and milling operations. We now also offer welding and assembly services.”

Looking ahead, Mr Lindsey said: “We will continue to place ourselves in a position to take advantage of any opportunities that may occur.

“We seem to be in a situation where there is a significant improvement in manufacturing since the crash of 2008. and there is a promise of substantial investment in infrastructure, particularly in rail and we are there to take advantage of it.”

A statue manufactured by Cannock based Laser Cutting firm Laser Process to commemorate Erasmus Darwin has been erected on Cathedral Walk in Lichfield.

The work, which will be officially unveiled in May 2012, was one which held particular resonance for Laser Process managing director David Lyndsey: “I was born in Lichfield so it’s particularly nice to be involved in something like that happening in your home town” he said.

Erasmus Darwin was a renowned scholar and the grandfather of Charles Darwin, the author of The Origin of the Species 150312-1. The statue represents the four major aspects of Darwins career: botany, medicine, science and writing.

Laser Process were responsible for the production of the figures in stainless steel which were then assembled and installed by Marine Fabrications. The Darwin Walk Trust were responsible for the funding and planning of the work.

This is not the first time that Laser Process have been involved in innovative public art projects. The company secured a lucrative contract to produce 240 life-size statues for installation along Britain’s footpaths and cycle ways as part of the project led by transport charity Sustrans. This has seen the company produce mimics of famous figures such as Gary Barlow, Stan Laurel, Rob Brydon and footballer Ledley King in their respective local areas, affording national exposure to the handiwork of the Midlands firm.

The Manufacturing Heroes recognition is a campaign set up by Made in Group, to celebrate manufacturers within the membership group who have demonstrated strength in a time of crisis.

Trade associated Made in Group began this to highlight the achievements of UK manufacturers who worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic, which was started with those who participated in the UK Ventilator Challenge to help save lives. Made in Group have voiced their view that government procurement for the NHS had failed over a preference to source from overseas suppliers and overlooked the quality manufacturing talent domestically.

Ultimately, all ‘Manufacturing Heroes’ will be presented with a specially commissioned badge manufactured in the world-renowned Midlands Jewellery Qtr by Thomas Fattorini Ltd, a company based in Birmingham and who were granted a Royal Warrant of Appointment to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. Many of these recognition ceremonies have taken place in 2021, with Made in Group planning to continue the recognition ceremony into 2022 with more companies to be announced in the near future.

Staffordshire based laser cutting specialist Laser Process is enjoying impressive growth so far in 2012 as a direct consequence of diversification and a buoyant Midland manufacturing sector.

The company has hit the £5 million turnover mark for the first time in it's history, after securing a healthy amount of repeat business from some of the region’s largest manufacturers and an increasing number of new customers.

Managing Director David Lindsey says: “Business is buoyant now, things seem to be picking up and we’re benefiting from it. I think manufacturing in general seems to be having resurgence in the West Midlands. Confidence seems to be returning to the economy and all the talk at the moment is quite positive. Everyone is fairly optimistic about the future and I think the West Midlands is a great region to be in manufacturing at the moment. I’m confident the business is going to have a good year.”

The tough economic climate in recent years encouraged the firm to diversify, securing a lucrative contract to produce 240 life-size statues for installation along Britain’s footpaths and cycle ways as part of the project led by transport charity Sustrans. This has seen the company produce mimics of famous figures such as Gary Barlow, Stan Laurel, Rob Brydon and footballer Ledley King in their respective local areas, affording national exposure to the handiwork of the Midlands firm.

Mr Lindsey adds: “Sustrans are focused on improvements to the UK’s cycle ways and footpaths. Most of that is attributed to quite substantive projects like building bridges over rivers but there is also a certain amount of money for what they call portrait benches that feature the statues. The subjects are all chosen locally and represent a mixture of local celebrities, figures from history and local symbols. The statues are installed with the benches which are made of recycled railway sleepers and we’ll have manufactured just over 240 statues when the project is completed. The commission represents a significant contract and exposure of our skills nationwide.”

Another public art project the company was involved with was the creation of a stainless steel statue in Lichfield to commemorate Erasmus Darwin, a renowned scholar and grandfather of Charles Darwin. The work, which will be officially unveiled in May 2012, was one which held particular resonance for David: “I was born in Lichfield so it’s particularly nice to be involved in something like that happening in your home town” he said.

Laser Process a cut above the rest with new time and cost saving machinery

Laser Process, the Staffordshire based laser cutting company, has invested £50,000 in a new Dugard ECO1000 vertical machining centre. This will enable the company to perform a range of secondary machining operations on parts they have laser cut.

The firm is also aspiring to meet its first class expectations within the manufacturing industry by cutting down on production time, therefore placing them ahead of their competitors.

Laser Process will also see the innovative machine maintain its prestigious position within the industry by utilising its latest investment to enhance the working process.

Managing Director, Dave Lindsey said “This machine will enable us to provide a one stop shop for our customers whilst, at the same time, adding value to our sales. The machine, which became operative September, will negate the need for customers to send out laser cut parts for further machining, saving time and cost.”

The operations made possible by this machine include drilling & tapping, chamfers, rebates, countersinking and counterbores.

Adding to its latest positive developments, Laser Process has also taken on a 3000 square feet unit opposite their base on Keys Park, Cannock. This unit will house the assembly operation in order for the firm to run a smooth operation. This is a relatively new but rapidly growing part of the business which is hoping to expand in the future.

To keep up with the growing demand, the company has taken on extra staff to operate the new machine and for the assembly operations.

Laser Process specialises in subcontract laser cutting and secondary operations to provide a one stop shop for its customers. Last year, Laser Process invested around one million pounds in new equipment, which is currently keeping the firm at the forefront of the industry. They pride themselves with always putting the needs of the customer first and will continue to do so with using their latest Dugard ECO1000 Vertical Machining Centre.

A specialist laser cutting business has unveiled a state-of-the-art online system that will enable customers to get quotes and place orders 24/7.
Cannock-based Laser Process have spent the last year working with laser cutting IT specialists ipLaser to develop the new system that will bring an extra dimension to their customer service.

The Australian system – which the company has christened LaserQuote24/7 - will allow both existing and potential customers to obtain a quote within minutes any time of the day or night.

Laser Process managing director Dave Lindsey told Business Report: “There are a number of benefits to the new system. First of all it means that when our sales guys are on the road they can give customers a price almost immediately.

“For our customers it’s about us helping them manage their business more efficiently. A lot of people on our database are small companies in which the principals of the company spend their working days in overalls working on machinery and do their admin in the evening or at weekends.
“In the past, it’s been difficult for these kind of customers to get quotations but now they can go online and get a price virtually immediately. It’s about us fitting into our customers’ work schedules.

All the easy-to-use system requires is for customers to register and upload their specifications before receiving an online quote minutes later. Then, if they wish, they can make an order immediately.
Dave added: “We’ve already tried the system out with a few of our customers and they all really like it.”

These are exciting times for the business which operates from Upper Keys at Keys Park. They have also just installed two brand new, top-of-the-range laser cutting machines made by German manufacturer Trumpf at a cost of almost £1m.
The L3030 model has a cutting area of 3 metres by 1.5 metres with a 4 kilowatt laser and the L3040 has a cutting area of 4 metres by 2 metres with a 5 kilowatt laser capable of cutting up to 20mm in steel.
