In the dynamic world of manufacturing, adaptability and innovation are the keys to success. Malthouse Engineering has exemplified this ethos by recently making substantial investments and enhancements, both within the Oldbury based factory and beyond.

Inside the Factory: Boosting Capacity and Comfort:

Inside the Malthouse factory, several remarkable changes have taken place. One significant addition is the acquisition of a new 100" Lumsden Grinding machine. This not only created a new job opportunity but also boosted production capacity, taking the total count of Lumsden machines to seventeen. This investment underscores Malthouse's commitment to precision engineering.

But it's not just about machines. Malthouse recognises the importance of providing a healthy work environment for its staff. This year, the company has collaborated with an air monitoring company to install a cutting-edge clean air system on the factory shop floor. This innovative system efficiently recycles dirty air, releasing clean, fresh air back into the factory—a move that sets Malthouse apart in its sector.

In addition to air quality, Malthouse Engineering has taken steps to conserve resources. A new drainage system has been installed, allowing for further water recycling through their rainwater harvesting system, a commitment to sustainability that has been ongoing for several years.

Furthermore, the company has revamped its staff facilities, introducing a state-of-the-art canteen. This space provides a modern, comfortable environment for employees to relax during breaks, equipped with everything one would expect in a modern kitchen. As an extra perk, Malthouse now offers complimentary hot and cold drinks, along with a 50" TV for entertainment during break times.

Malthouse Engineering also recognises the importance of investing in the future workforce. An apprentice scheme is set to begin in October 2023, initially within the sales department, with plans to expand it rapidly across other areas of the business.

Outside the Factory, Expansion and Modernisation:

Beyond the factory walls, Malthouse Engineering has been equally ambitious, seizing the opportunity to purchase a neighbouring building, despite its poor condition. Opting to demolish it, the company has used the space to expand its stock yard facilities. This expansion also provides parking space for their new fleet of MAN trucks, acquired earlier this year.

Malthouse Engineering has also transformed previously unusable land into an access road. This access road not only enables easier movement within the factory but also opens up possibilities for changes in production processes and the expansion of workstations, including additional staff parking facilities.

With these expansions, security is paramount. The company has invested in new security fencing and gates, ensuring the safety and protection of their assets. The access road to the stock yard has also been widened and now boasts a new concrete pad, adorned with corporate signage that proudly displays the Malthouse brand.

Future Plans, Continuing the Journey:

As Malthouse Engineering strides into the future, they have ambitious plans in mind. Their commitment to cutting-edge technology includes ongoing upgrades to all their cutting machines. Moreover, they aim to enhance office facilities and further refine the exterior appearance of their building, ensuring that innovation and progress remain at the core of their operations.

Malthouse Engineering's recent investments and improvements are not just a testament to their dedication to excellence but also a harbinger of a bright and innovative future in the world of manufacturing. Their proactive approach to enhancing both the workplace and their production capabilities positions them as a leader in their field.

On 10th August 2023, the local conservative MP for West Bromwich – Shaun Bailey – visited Malthouse Engineering to catch up with the recent investments and significant developments that the company has made.

This was a follow up visit from Shaun, who first came to visit Malthouse Engineering in August 2022. His original visit was to see how local businesses were getting on after the struggles of covid but also the Ukraine war; with both having affected many industries massively

As part of Shaun’s visit this time, he was first shown around the inside of the factory, where multiple changes have been made. Notably, a new 100" Lumsden Grinding machine has not only expanded production capacity but also created job opportunities, emphasising Malthouse's commitment to precision engineering.

Malthouse Engineering have also introduced a pioneering clean air system and enhanced environmental sustainability with a new drainage system. Staff amenities include a modern canteen with free drinks and a 50" TV. Malthouse is also investing in the future with an apprentice scheme, initially in sales, set for rapid expansion.

Outside the factory, Malthouse Engineering has been on an ambitious expansion and modernization journey. They purchased and demolished a neighbouring building, using the space to expand stock yard facilities and accommodate the new MAN truck fleet. They've also transformed unused land into an access road, facilitating factory movement and creating room for production changes and additional staff parking. Security has been enhanced with new fencing and gates. The access road to the stockyard now features a widened path and a new concrete pad, proudly displaying the Malthouse brand.

Looking forward to the future, Malthouse Engineering is determined to continue our progress by upgradling all cutting machines, as well as office facilities and the outside appearance of the building.

As thanks to Shaun for coming out to see us last year, we ‘traced’ his hand. which we then digitised in our drawing office to send over to our machines to flame cut from 6mm thick mild steel. We gifted this hand to him at our 75th Anniversary celebration last year at the Black country living museum.

A Dragon’s Den style event organised by enterprise education charity Young Enterprise will be supported by Birmingham company Malthouse Engineering Co. Ltd.

The Young Enterprise Area Organising Board in Stafford and Stone created the event where Sixth Form students from schools in the area will pitch their ideas to a panel of dragons.

Taking place at the Stafford Gate House Theatre on December 13th, Malthouse Engineering’s Managing Director Dr Roy Taylor will be taking up the Dragon’s chair.

As one of the Dragons, Dr Taylor will be listening to the students pitch their ideas and providing feedback on their ideas and plans.

The judging panel is set to also include John Fisher, founder of Business for Breakfast, who will be chairing the Dragons, and members of the local council.

Stuart Walton, Area Board Chairman, said: "We are delighted to have Dr Roy Taylor involved in the Dragons Dens event this year.

“The time and effort of local business leaders and elected members of the council that goes into supporting Young Enterprise in the Stafford and Stone area is one of the main factors in our on-going success both regionally and nationally, and it is greatly appreciated by the Board and myself."

All competing teams of students involved in the process will be given feedback and guidance on their products and performance.

The winning team is eligible to compete at regional level and if successful could proceed to the National awards.

Young Enterprise is also holding European level awards in Venice and global awards in America.

The event is part of one of the programmes run by the charity which works to prepare young people for the world of work and entrepreneurship and reduce youth unemployment.

The Young Enterprise Company Programme offers Sixth Form students from across the country an opportunity to acquire real life experience of how to run a business and how to generate revenues for their companies by making and selling products.

Malthouse Engineering Co Ltd’s involvement in Young Enterprise has stemmed from Marketing Manager Mark Hayward’s involvement with the charity over the last 18 months as a Business Advisor.

Their involvement also reflects the company’s wider commitment to supporting young people in their education and enabling the acquisition of real life business experience.

In the last few months we have supplied flame cut profiles to the world’s most intense X-ray, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). Its based in Grenoble, France and brings together 21 partner nations to work on a state-of-the-art synchrotron which provides the international scientific community with unique opportunities for the study of materials and living matter. The ESRF functions like a “super-microscope” which “films” the position and motion of atoms in condensed and living matter, and reveals the structure of matter in all its beauty and complexity.

Supplying the project was a challenge we enjoyed taking on. The customer required traceability throughout the production process. Our ISO9001 quality management system is set up to provide this. We can supply test certificates with all our material and traceability through our production processes. For this project we also numbered each profile and the location of where it came from in each plate. You can see in the photos below that during the flame cutting process we numbered each profile and then each one was stamped.

The profiles were a mixture of 25mm and 180mm thick in s275jr material.

Starting in January 2017 we will be asking customers we have supplied each month for feedback on how we did and if there is anything we can improve on. This month we are pleased to say we achieved an overall satisfaction rate of 100%. This is based on 22% of customers being “satisfied”, 55% were “very satisfied” and 22% were “extremely satisfied”.

On our delivery speed we also received 100% satisfaction with 33% of customers being “satisfied”, 55% were “very satisfied” and 11% were “extremely satisfied”.

Feedback suggested we need to improve our response times on quoting enquiries where we achieved 89% satisfaction. This month we have been unlucky in having 3 members of our sales team out with illnesses at different times so there have been occasions where enquiries have built up. We are hoping staffing levels will be back to normal in February so we can improve on this score in next months survey.

77% of customers rated us better than other steel profiling firms they have used recently and again 77% said they would recommend us to a friend or colleague.

Comments from those who gave feedback included

“Very friendly & helpful team.”

and

“We have been dealing with you for a number of years and could count on one hand the number of rejects, so very happy.”

If you wish to leave feedback on how we performed for you can do by emailing quality@malthouseengineering.com.

Malthouse Go Greener with a Host of Initiatives Across the Business

Midlands based leading manufacturer Malthouse Engineering is taking climate change talk seriously by implementing an array of greener initiatives across the business. As the pressure is turned up for businesses to go net-zero by 2050, the green thinking firm can ensure their impact on the environment is greener than ever before.

Established in 1947, Malthouse Engineering is renowned for providing the best possible steel profiling, otherwise known as flame cutting, service in the UK. Over the years the company has become increasingly conscious of the carbon footprint they have been leaving on the planet, and therefore have been working towards a more sustainable way of working.

Taking their first steps towards a greener future, “encouraged by Rover”, the company was accredited with BS EN ISO 14001 - a environmental management certification. This allows businesses to reduce waste management costs and demonstrates commitment to protecting the environment.

At the time when Malthouse received this accreditation, businesses were more inclined to work with companies who had achieved this standard. However as years went by, businesses focused on working with others who were working towards net-zero.

This gave Managing Director Roy Taylor the idea of harvesting rainwater for use in their facility, mainly used in the grinding department of their plant to service steel. This was achieved by the company investing in large containers to collect the rainwater. To ensure the water was safe for employees, they also invested in ultraviolet light to help kill bacteria in the water.

Having Proven the concept, Malthouse increased the capacity to 32 containers (32,000 litres). Roy said:

“This has seen massive savings for the company as we do not use any water from the mains. The rainwater harvesting has served us very well over the last 5-8 years with having 14 grinding machines that need to be cooled everytime to service ground steel. Going Green is about trying everything out and seeing what works for you. We learnt over time that algae was forming so the “free” IBC”s are being replaced by 2 black plastic containers with 20,000 litres capacity”

Another initiative the company has taken on recently is the recycling of their scrap steel which is sent back to steel mills to be remelted and used again. The company uses an oxygen fuel gas method to cut steel using iron oxide. However unlike competitors, Malthouse uses a system where iron oxide sparks and steel are separated by dropping through the middle of the machines separately. With 10 flame cutting machines running 20 hours a day, 5,000 tonnes of scrap are continuously used again and again. Roy concluded:

“We are constantly working on being greener. Our next project is looking at the aluminium stones inside our machines that are used to grind surfaces. As they wear over time we want to be able to recycle these small pieces of metal rather than throwing them away. As well as looking at getting solar panels, we have also recently planted 50 trees on an embankment at the side of our facility. As a result we have been rewarded by a variety of birds in the Black Country”
