Manufacturer Reaps Benefits of Young Person’s Perspective

19-year-old aspiring engineer Elliott Underwood has been making major changes at Micro-Mesh Filtration helping the business get up to speed with the digital era. The leading UK filter manufacturer has benefited from a new e-commerce website, a first for the company, and a facial recognition ‘clocking in system’ thanks to Elliott’s contribution.

With digital processes, sales and applications more prominent than ever in the workplace, and the acceleration of this due to the 2020 pandemic, many manufacturers are looking for ways they can utilize this.

Elliott is just one example of a young person bringing a fresh perspective to manufacturing, introducing new ways to utilize digital processes. He began his journey at Micro-Mesh over 12 months ago, whilst waiting to become an engineer in the RAF.

“During my time at Micro-mesh, I have been given a number of projects that are contributing to my experience as an engineer. There is only so much you can learn with pen and paper and having the opportunity to manage projects has allowed me to become more technically minded.” Elliott explained.

FilterFinder.co.uk is an e-commerce website created by Elliott to help the company supply new markets and increase its online outreach. From the platform, customers are able to cross-reference over 100,000 part numbers, order the part and get it delivered to their door within 72 hours. Elliott added:

“We have seen massive growth on the website increasing our website traffic by 400% and enquiries by 200%. The website is also a great way of collecting data, allowing us to analyse current trends and develop our product range.

On top of that, Elliott has introduced the business to a contactless ‘clocking in’ software, where a machine will recognise an employee’s face and automatically register their attendance and departure. This has proven to be more effective with the benefits of using less paper and data being recorded to the cloud. The software has also been adapted to include workshop data-capture allowing employees to clock into jobs, improving how time is managed in production decreasing line downtime and increasing job efficiency.

He concluded:

“I believe young people have a different approach to online and the way we use technology which is much needed within the manufacturing industry.”

“My advice to young people would be don’t be scared to speak up in the workplace and make suggestions - a fresh perspective could solve a problem a business has been having for years.”

MiM member Micro-Mesh was founded in 1968 by Chairman Bob Underwood. The manufacturer produces high-quality Hydraulic and Air filters for a wide range of industrial applications. Their ethos is to produce great-quality products, at a reasonable price.

Micro-Mesh Filtration Celebrates Half a Century

A new era is startingfor Micro-Mesh Filtration. Their 50th anniversary comes alongside with a sequence of innovative in- house technologies, a wider product range and further international business.

Primarily established in 1968 to supply filtration products into the coal industry, it has progressed over the years by continually investing in new plant and machinery. At the demise of the coal, it has expanded successfully into new industries by producing quality products for a reasonable price. In 2014, they moved to their present premises and since then continuous innovations were implemented in their product range and manufacturing processes. One year later, their exporting market was expanded by setting up Micro-Mesh India, to allow them back into mining. In 2016 they purchased the Eurofilter Company expanding their market into the power generating and air filter industries which had the immediate effect on Micro-Mesh by doubling their turn over. As a consequence of such expansion, staff had to be increased by 25% and their exporting activity had astonishingly increased to 36 countries around the world.

In 2018 they have definitely surpassed themselves. As a result of continuous investment in technology and innovation, they are in the process of extending their present premises by another 10.000 square feet which shouldbecompleted by the end of March. Not only that but a promising more effective new range of medias for both hydraulic and air filters called, ExtraPlus Media will benefit their customers by giving them a 25% increase in filter performance. James Underwood, Manager Director at Micro-Mesh, says - Sometimes it takes 5,10,15 years to make a substantial leap forward, but most of the time the reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more.

Since launching almost 12 months ago, FilterFinder has fulfilled more than 350 customers' needs, all whilst building an e-commerce website in-house and managing their parent company, Micro-Mesh. Micro-Mesh Engineering Are Making Significant Strides In Egypt

Micro-Mesh is a perfect example of how Made In members are leading the way in their industries. As a leading UK filter manufacturer, Micro-Mesh Engineering have been constantly expanding for decades and now exports out to over 30 countries.

Most recently, on Wednesday 29th May 2019, Micro-Mesh closed a very significant deal in Egypt, signing an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Ministry of State for Military Production and Advanced Engineering Solutions, to manufacture and supply their renowned air filters for use in gas turbines in Egyptian power stations.

James Underwood, Managing Director of Micro-Mesh, recently journeyed out to Egypt to meet with the Ministry of Military Production, agree to the terms and sign the MoU.

“We were also there to talk with the Ministry about how we’re going to get this company up and running,” says Mr. Underwood, referring to the new Micro-Mesh facility in Cairo and the efforts being made to bring the company’s signature innovation and expertise to the region. “This is a major milestone for our company as we look to significantly expand our footprint in some of the world’s fastest growing markets.”

But this isn’t the only source of excitement for Micro-Mesh. Whilst in Egypt, Mr. Underwood was pleasantly surprised to learn of the company’s nomination for a Board of Trade Award, being presented with this latest accolade by the Secretary of State for International Trade, Liam Fox. The award recognises the company’s huge efforts in trading in overseas markets.

Mr. Underwood goes on to describe how Micro-Mesh are highly experienced in international trade, adding: “We’re an Export Champion, recognised on the Department of International Trade Export Champion Scheme list.”

In a wider sense, the signing of the MoU is the ideal first step for the company’s expansion into the Egyptian market, and is also a great stepping stone into the wider region which they estimate to be worth over £20m. Mr. Underwood sums up these exciting times to come by stating:
