Rowan have recently been working on a project for a leading supplier of medical instruments

The part shown is a key component for an air tool used in orthapedic surgery, and is produced from medical grade 17-4PH stainless steel. Small slots and tight positional and dimensional tolerances make this a challenging part to machine, as there is only .010mm variation allowed on key features.

Parts are deburred and ultrasonically cleaned in house before being delivered to the customer, all standard services from Rowan.

Rowan Precision Purchases and Takes Delivery of another new Citizen CNC

Rowan Precision, a leading manufacturer in precision machining, has just acquired a state-of-the-art Citizen L32 X11 LFV CNC lathe. This new addition to their machinery lineup promises to enhance their capabilities in producing complex parts and improving overall productivity.

One of the main features that make the Citizen L32 X11 LFV CNC lathe stand out is its 9-axis system. This includes a Y2 axis to the Z2 axis on the back tool post, which opens up a range of possibilities for producing complex parts. Additionally, the front gang tool post offers a +90/-45° B-axis swivel, allowing the utilization of rotary tools to create angled holes and milled features from either spindle.

To streamline production and increase efficiency, the Citizen L32 X11 LFV CNC lathe comes equipped with a workpiece conveyor as a standard feature. This enables seamless movement of workpieces, ensuring smooth operations throughout the machining process.

Control of the machine is managed through the Mitsubishi 800 CNC operating system. This advanced system enables simultaneous in-cutting with up to three tools, allowing for faster and more efficient production. This functionality significantly reduces cycle times, enhancing overall productivity for Rowan Precision.

In terms of tooling options, the B-axis L32-XII version offers up to 40 tools for front, back, and cross machining. This versatility allows for a wide range of machining operations, catering to various customer requirements. The main spindle, with power ratings of 3.7/7.5 kW, and the counter spindle, with power ratings of 2.2/3.7 kW, can reach speeds of up to 8,000 rpm.

The Citizen L32 X11 LFV CNC lathe also includes a C-axis, which can be used in conjunction with driven tool stations in the three tool carriers. With its fast acceleration of tool rotation, reaching speeds of up to 9,000 rpm, Rowan Precision can further minimize cycle times while maintaining exceptional precision and quality in their work.

When it comes to rapid movement, the linear axes of the Citizen L32 X11 LFV CNC lathe provide a rapid traverse rate of 32 m/min. However, the Y2 axis moves slightly slower at 24 m/min. Nevertheless, these impressive traverse speeds ensure efficient and precise movements throughout the machining process.

Rowan Precision's Finance Director Glenn Aston completes London Marathon in aid of the MS Society

On Sunday 2nd October 2022 our Finance Director, Glenn Aston, completed the 26.2 miles of the TCS London Marathon in a time of 5 Hours 24 Minutes. This was Glenn’s first ever Marathon at the ripe old age of 62, and he confirms will be his last!
Glenn was raising funds for The MS Society to help with the ongoing research into Multiple Sclerosis and their support for people who have this disease. This is a charity very close to Glenn’s heart.

At the time of writing over £3,200 had been raised.
In summing up the whole process, Glenn confirmed that he had wanted to run a Marathon for the last 2-3 years and had previously entered the ballot for the London Marathon, however, was unsuccessful on each occasion. He then decided to see if he could get a charity place with the MS Society, who confirmed his place, but he would have to guarantee to raise a minimum of £2,000. Place confirmed!

Glenn then purchased the book “119 Days to Go”, How to Train for and Smash your first Marathon, by Chris Evans. This is a great book which Glenn followed to the letter, except for a few sessions when he was injured or feeling under the weather. Glenn confirmed that he could not have done it without the help and support of his wife, Carol.

On day 119 he was ready for the Marathon and has confirmed that it was a fantastic experience with over 42,000 runners and more than 2 Million spectators along the route; the atmosphere was something that he will never forget.

BTEC Apprentices Visit Rowan Precision

Recently, the CNC machining factory of Rowan Precision located in Witton received a group of BTEC apprenticeship students from the Birmingham Metropolitan College. The visit was organized under the aim of providing the students with an opportunity to gain insights and practical experience of the manufacturing industry. The students were excited about the visit and were looking forward to seeing how the CNC machining factory operates.

Rowan Precision is a renowned name in the manufacturing industry and has been providing quality precision engineering services to a range of industries for nearly 40 years. The company has been established on the principles of quality, innovation, and reliability, and is AS9100 certified.

The students were warmly received by the management team at Rowan Precision and were given a brief introduction to the company's history, services, and quality assurance policies. The students were then taken on a tour of the factory where they were able to observe the machining process for various parts and components. They were given explanations about the various machines and tools that were being used, and the processes that were followed to manufacture high-quality components.

The visit also allowed the students to experience the working environment of a CNC machining factory. They were able to speak with the employees and ask them questions about their jobs and what skills were required to operate the machines. The employees were delighted to share their knowledge and experience with the students, they were also able to witness the practical application of the theories and principles that they had learned in their BTEC apprenticeship program.

Rowan invest in future engineers

There has been a lot of discussion in the trade press and in networking discussions about succession, and the future of engineers in the UK, with shortages of skilled personnel, particularly since the start of the Covid pandemic, and the loss of skilled staff as a result of Brexit, identified as key issues.

In order for our company to grow, we have identified the need to look to the future and take on an additional apprentice CNC engineer to bolster the team at Rowan. Our new team member, Ricardo recently joined and is being trained by our experienced engineers to learn the skills required to set and operate our wide range of fixed and sliding head machinery. Our existing apprentice Lewis is in his second year with the company and is progressing very well, and now assists with all of our machines, including the twin spindle, twin turret Miyano BNE-51 pictured.

Key to any training is the support of external training bodies, and we work with both Birmingham Metropolitan College and Aston University to ensure that our apprentices are familiar with the latest methods, tooling and machinery. This means that our apprentices bring fresh ideas and principles into the team. Being connected with these leading learning bodies, as well as the member organisations such as Made in the Midlands and MAKE (UK) helps the existing team, as we have training opportunities to develop and learn new skills, opportunities to visit other manufacturers, and knowledge hubs to learn from.

As Rowan are now moving into new markets, and are implementing the medical standard ISO13485, we see developing our skills as key to the future of the business, and look forward to seeing our apprentices become fully fledged engineers.

ROWAN PRECISION CELEBRATES COMMITMENT TO REAL LIVING WAGE

Rowan Precision Limited has today been accredited as a Living Wage Employer. Their Living Wage commitment will see everyone working at Rowan Precision Limited receive a minimum hourly wage of £9.90, significantly higher than the government minimum for over 23s, which currently stands at £9.50 per hour.

Rowan Precision Limited is based in West Midlands, a region where almost a fifth of all workers (19.3%) earn less than they need to earn to get by, with around 434,000 jobs paying less than the real Living Wage. Despite this, Rowan Precision Limited has committed to pay the real Living Wage and deliver a fair day’s pay for a hard day’s work.

The real Living Wage is the only rate calculated according to the costs of living. It provides a voluntary benchmark for employers that wish to ensure their staff earn a wage they can live on, not just the government minimum. Since 2011 the Living Wage movement has delivered a pay rise to over 300,000 people and put over £1.6 billion extra into the pockets of low paid workers.

£250,000 Investment Cuts Carbon for Rowan Precision

Precision component specialists Rowan Precision with the help of a grant, under the ARG Recovery Scheme, are reaping the benefits of a new CNC Machine from leading provider Citizen Machinery. The latest in modern technology machine named Miyano BNE-51MSY is helping to increase their capability, whilst decreasing their carbon footprint.

Birmingham based Rowan Precision have been producing exceptional turned parts for a multitude of industries for the past 38 years. After a management buyout in 2021, the new Management Team are now looking to grow the business and expand their customer base into new industries with the help of their latest investment.

The MSY model from Citizen, Miyano BNE-51MSY, has increased capability with a X3 axis +Z3 axis on the back spindle and superimposed control for 3 tool simultaneous machining. With faster cycle times, this is drastically cutting down lead times for Rowan Precision’s customers. In the past, the firm would subcontract work when dealing with a packed full order book, however they are now able to gain more control and increase the quality of their work with the latest investment.

Established in 1984, Rowan Precision has always prided itself on having highly skilled technical engineers and having the know-how to make their clients' ideas a reality. Dealing with an array of sectors including medical, aerospace, automotive, lighting, defence, electronics and telecommunications Rowan has the ability to use their decades of knowledge working across multiple sectors to suit customer needs.

“Our latest investment from Citizen Machinery allows us to bridge the gap between our Ø32mm M32 sliding head machines and our 65mm Mazak Hyper Quadrex 150MSY.

Equipped with the twin turret and partnered with the Z3 and X3 allows the machine to perform sub-spindle operations while the two turrets are working on the main spindle.

This creates huge opportunities for reducing cycle times and reducing customer costs. ”

Better yet, the investment is helping the firm to reduce their carbon footprint with more scope to achieve a machined product in one go, as well as the machine being more energy efficient. Rowan Precision is proud to be producing essential parts for ventilators

Midlands manufacturer Rowan Precision has joined the ventilator challenge and is working around the clock to produce vital components for much-needed ventilators during the Covid 19 pandemic. Alongside this vital work, the company is still open to supplying all customers.

Rowan Precision Ltd has been manufacturing high-quality precision machined components and turned parts for over 30 years. During this time they have built a strong reputation for quality and service supplying national and international customers in diverse industries including Aerospace, Medical, Safety, Defence, Lighting, Automotive, Electronics, and Telecommunications.

The Birmingham based manufacturer was delighted to join the ventilator challenge when requested by one of their customers. Within 24 hours of winning the order from Smiths Medical production staff at Rowan Precision began producing the vital components needed for the construction of ventilators. Staff worked around the clock over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend to ensure they completed the first batch of components for collection.

Martin Barker, Managing Director at Rowan Precision said:-

“The two components we were asked to produce for the Smiths Medical approved ventilator was challenging and complicated. Although it was difficult obtaining the tooling required, we quickly found the suppliers to support this ventilator project.

So far the company has completed the initial contract for 12,000 components, and all of these will have been assembled into finished ventilators for nationwide distribution.

Martin added:-

“I feel extremely proud to be part of a nationwide incentive to save lives. Additionally, this work has helped to keep the company fully operational and kept our team working together in a way for which we are extremely grateful.”

Another customer Multirole Development Engineering has also placed a new order for vital ventilator components. These are used to measure the flow of gas to the patient, be that air or oxygen-enriched air. The data supplied by the sensor is also used to plot the graphs on the ventilator display and monitor the flows precisely by calculating the times, the true figure of the volumes can be confirmed.

During the fulfillment of these orders whilst supporting all other customers, the company has ensured that social distancing is observed and sanitizer and PPE are provided and fully utilized.

Offering advice to other manufacturers open during this difficult time, Martin concluded:

Networking opportunities at the Farnborough Air Show

Rowan had the opportunity to visit the air show as guests of one of the leading suppliers to the aerospace industry, who we supply with parts CNC machined and assembled at our site in Birmingham. Always keen to keep up to date with the latest developments in the markets we are involved with, we also got the chance to network with both potential new suppliers and to introduce Rowan to a global supply chain supporting the aviation and space industries.

Since visting the show last week we have identified and connected with over a dozen new connections on LinkedIn, and have discussed enquiries with a number of tier 1 and tier 2 supply chains.

Retirement of Accounts bookkeeper at Rowan Precision Ltd

We recently celebrated the retirement of one of the longest serving employees at Rowan Precision Ltd, our accounts manager, Susan Boswell-Munday, who finally retired after 26 years, having started in 1996.

Susan has always been a shining light within the company, always looking at the bright side of life, taking pride in her work, particularly in ensuring that the accounts balanced at the end of each month!

A big fan of the theatre, with Christmas coming up she is looking forward to attending pantomime with her extended family, and cooking one of her fabulous Christmas dinners, another family affair. In addition to her culinary prowess, Susan is a dab hand at home improvements!

Susan will be keeping herself busy spending time with her Great Grandson Jude, and is looking forward to the arrival of another in the next few months.

An incredible example of company loyalty, Susan tried to retire some years ago, but we soon had her back in to cover an extended maternity leave for her replacement, Danielle.

We all wish her the best and know she will keep in touch with all the friends she has made at Rowan Precision.

25 year service for Quality Engineer Tracey

We recently celebrated the long service of our key Quality Engineer Tracey Child, who has completed 25 years of service for Rowan Precision Ltd.

Starting in the assembly section of the company in 1997 Tracey has performed many roles including working with goods inwards, moving to an inspection role which she has performed for nearly 20 years.

Having gained an NVQ qualification in inspection, with expertise in both Keyence and Aberlink CMM tools, Tracey has long been a valued member of the team.

Now looking to expand her role within the company to assist with customer interface and production planning, Rowan have recruited an additional inspector to assist Tracey and maintain our quality-focussed approach to production and maintenance of our AS9100 procedures.

Employee retention has always been part of Rowan's ethos, which along with our Living Wage accreditation shows our commitment to our staff.
