SGS has invested in expanding its customs software capabilities and ensuring compliance with HMRC changes. It has also been preparing for the HMRC change over to a new electronic customs declarations system called the Customs Declaration Service (CDS).

In addition, drawing on its renowned compliance expertise, SGS has built a dedicated UK customs brokerage team to offer post-Brexit services, enabling businesses to keep freight moving.

SGS is also proud to provide transit facilitation, which is an extension of its robust TransitNet platform – used by over 24 Common Transit Convention (CTC) countries and supported by SGS’s own customs guarantee to cover any size of shipment.

The Food Standards Agency's Push for Allergen Labeling: A Game Changer for Loose Foods

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has taken a significant step towards enhancing food safety by advocating for mandatory written allergen labelling on non-prepacked foods, such as foods sold in cafes and restaurants. Whilst this does not go as far as the calls by the 'Owen’s Law' campaign, for allergen information to be included on the face of a business’s main menu, it is a major step forward for the hospitality industry. This move is designed to protect consumers with food allergies, providing them with clear, comprehensive information about the ingredients in the food they purchase.

Currently, under the Food Information to Consumers (FIC) Regulation No. 1169/2011, allergen information for non-prepacked food can be provided by any means including orally or in a written format, either on a menu or notice.

While this is undoubtedly a positive move for consumers, it also presents a challenge for businesses. Ensuring accurate, up-to-date allergen labelling requires a deep understanding of food content, cross-contamination risks, and the latest regulatory standards. That's where we come in.

Our company offers comprehensive advisory and testing services designed to help businesses navigate these changes smoothly. Our team of experts can provide guidance on how to adapt your processes to meet the new requirements. We also understand the importance of regular reviews of risk assessments and HACCP that relate to allergen management. We can help to provide reassurance, that your written information is not only accurate and compliant but also clear and easy for customers to understand.

We understand that every business is unique, so we offer bespoke solutions tailored to your specific needs. Whether you need assistance with ingredient analysis, risk assessment, or staff training, we're here to support you every step of the way.

Our testing services can also ensure your food products are safe for all consumers. We use the latest technology to detect allergens and other contaminants, giving you peace of mind and helping to protect your reputation.

In conclusion, while the FSA's push for written allergen labelling represents a significant change for the food industry, it's also an opportunity. An opportunity to improve food safety, to build trust with customers, and to demonstrate your commitment to their wellbeing. With our expert advisory and testing services, you can turn this challenge into a chance to grow and thrive.

Let's work together to make food safer for everyone. Reach out to us today to learn more about how we can support your business through this transition.

Charting the Future: Mastering UK Import-Export Dynamics for Manufactured Goods

As the United Kingdom charts its course post-Brexit, businesses engaged in the import and export of manufactured goods find themselves at the forefront of a new era. The landscape has shifted, regulations have transformed, and opportunities await those agile enough to adapt. In this dynamic environment, companies must navigate challenges and capitalize on emerging prospects to ensure the seamless flow of goods across borders.

New regulatory framework

The post-Brexit era has ushered in a revised regulatory framework, requiring businesses to adhere to a new set of rules governing the import and export of manufactured goods. Navigating customs procedures, tariffs, and compliance standards demands a heightened level of diligence and familiarity with the intricacies of the updated regulations.

Customs declarations and documentation

One of the most significant changes is the requirement for customs declarations and additional documentation. Businesses involved in the manufacturing sector must ensure that they have the necessary paperwork to facilitate the smooth passage of goods through customs. Delays caused by incomplete or inaccurate documentation can have profound implications on supply chain efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Tariffs and trade agreements

The evolution of the UK's trading relationship with the European Union (EU) and other nations has introduced changes to tariff structures. Understanding the implications of these tariffs and capitalizing on any new trade agreements is crucial for businesses seeking to optimize their cost structures and maintain competitiveness in the global marketplace.

Supply chain resilience

The redefined relationship between the UK and the EU has prompted businesses to reevaluate and fortify their supply chain strategies. Emphasis on supply chain resilience, diversification, and contingency planning has become paramount. Companies are exploring alternative sourcing options and distribution channels to mitigate risks associated with potential disruptions.

Technology as a catalyst

Amid challenges, technology emerges as a powerful catalyst for efficiency. Businesses are increasingly turning to digital solutions to streamline customs processes, enhance visibility across the supply chain, and ensure compliance. Leveraging technology not only facilitates smoother operations but also provides a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving landscape.

Strategic partnerships and expert guidance

Given the complexity of post-Brexit trade dynamics, forming strategic partnerships and seeking expert guidance is becoming a hallmark of successful businesses. Collaborating with logistics providers, customs brokers, and consultants with a deep understanding of the new regulatory environment can offer invaluable support in navigating challenges and maximizing opportunities.

As the UK forges its path forward, businesses engaged in the import and export of manufactured goods stand at the crossroads of change. Navigating this terrain requires adaptability, a keen understanding of regulatory nuances, and a commitment to leveraging technology and strategic partnerships for success in the post-Brexit landscapes.

How can SGS help?

With a global network, including customs operations across Europe and beyond, SGS is already working with hundreds of businesses within the sector. We are helping thousands of companies with customs services, including software, brokerage and transit, to facilitate trade throughout Europe and beyond.

As a neutral partner, not involved in transportation directly, SGS is focused on ensuring our clients’ goods move seamlessly through border locations. To help ease the pressures of customs compliance, SGS also offers a one-stop-shop of international trade solutions, supported with in-house software that can help make your customs declarations simpler and provide visibility and control.

Food contact materials (FCM) are materials and products that come into contact with food. They include packaging materials, cookware, kitchenware and machinery. FCM can affect food in various ways, for example, by transferring harmful substances to food, altering taste or smell, or causing deterioration.

Laboratory testing can ensure that FCM comply with the relevant regulations and standards for your target market and do not pose health risks to consumers.

Why is FCM testing necessary?

FCM testing is a vital for ensuring the safety of food and safeguarding public health. It enables:

Protection from contamination: as FCM are in direct contact with food, they can transfer substances to the food. Testing ensures that no harmful substances migrate from the materials to the food

Compliance with regulations: various countries and regions have strict regulations in place to ensure FCM meet specific safety standards. Testing is necessary to ensure compliance

Quality assurance: testing assures packaging manufactures that their products meet quality and safety requirements and allows them to build consumer trust

Prevention of health risks: by identifying potential hazards, FCM testing prevents health risks associated with consuming contaminated food

Food contact materials testing from SGS

We offer years of experience and extensive expertise in the field of FCM testing. Our state-of-the-art laboratory in Bradford is one of the UK’s primary food contact testing labs. We can test your FCM products for:

Overall migration testing (OML), to measure the total amount of components transferring from the material to the food

Specific migration testing (SML), to measure the migration of specific toxic substances

Sensory testing for taste and smell

Maximum permitted quantity (QM), to measure the amount of volatile substances in the material

Lead and cadmium release and lip and rim testing

Testing for other regulated substances, including PFAS/PFOS, formaldehyde, BPA and melamine

Other tests, as required by different markets, such as UK, EU, US and Canada

We can test a wide range of FCM products, such as plastics, ceramics, metals, paper, wood, textiles and more. We can also help you with certification, labeling, and documentation.

We are committed to providing our customers with the best service possible, competitive prices and fast turnaround times.

New Import Rules for Animals and Animal Products Set to Enforce Stringent Standards from January 31, 2024

In a significant development that will reshape international trade practices, new import rules for animals and animal products come into force from January 31, 2024. These rules mark a decisive shift in global trade regulations, prioritizing the welfare of animals and reinforcing biosecurity measures. Let's delve into the details of these forthcoming changes and their implications for global commerce.

International accord on stricter regulations

As the world confronts mounting concerns over animal welfare and the transmission of infectious diseases, the introduction of these new import rules signifies a global consensus on implementing stricter standards. The primary objective is to harmonize international trade while upholding the health and welfare of animals.

What is the new regulation?

Simplified export health certificates and phytosanitary certificates for medium risk animal products and phytosanitary goods imported from the EU

Begin sample documentary checks on medium risk goods from the EU, but there will be no new routine controls undertaken on these goods at the border, so initially there will be no charges for documentary checks or holds for inspection

The removal of pre notification requirements for low risk plant and plant products from the EU

Introduce pre-notification requirements for EU sanitary and phytosanitary goods that enter Great Britain via West Coast port

The introduction of health certification on imports from the EU of high risk food and feed of non-animal origin

The introduction of new checks and controls when moving Irish goods (i.e. any goods other than qualifying Northern Irish goods) from Irish ports directly to Great Britain

Impact on global trade

The implementation of these new import rules marks a profound shift in international trade dynamics. While challenges are expected, such as increased administrative requirements and potential delays, the regulations also present opportunities for nations to underscore their commitment to animal welfare, biosecurity and international collaboration.

For businesses involved in the trade of animals and animal products, adherence to these regulations is imperative to maintain access to global markets. The new rules underline the importance of robust quality control systems, comprehensive record-keeping and a deep understanding of biosecurity principles.

What lies ahead?

Governments, businesses and international organizations are working in tandem to introduce and adapt to these new import rules. The overarching objective is to strike a balance between facilitating international trade and safeguarding animal health and welfare.

The regulation is to drive progress in animal welfare, biosecurity and the overall safety of animal products in the realm of global trade. While they may present short-term challenges, they represent a positive shift towards a more sustainable and responsible approach to international trade in animals and animal products.

With the onset of these regulations, the world eagerly anticipates the way in which they will shape the future of global trade, ensuring a higher standard of care for animals and bolstered biosecurity for all.

How can SGS help?

In an increasingly globalized economy, customs brokerage services are a valuable asset for businesses engaged in international trade. Once operational, the project will connect Ghana and the West African region to the global LNG market, giving local economies and industries access to a cheaper, more reliable and cleaner source of energy.

The new FRU, an essential part of the project, will be equipped with two 14,000 cu m type-C cargo tanks and have a regasification capacity of 335 tons per hour.

SGS HELPS AVOID PROJECT DELAYS WITH GLOBAL INSPECTIONS

Before the vessel could be cleared for its final release from the shipyard, a full owner’s review inspection was required. Unable to conduct the inspection due to COVID-19 restrictions preventing their team from entering China, TLTC called on SGS’s global reach and inspection expertise.

With a presence in Shanghai, SGS was able to keep the project afloat by conducting a full inspection of the FRU at the Jiangnan Shipyard, including assessments of the hull, topside and all machinery.

LOCAL EXPERTISE

The SGS team in China consisted of local experts in piping, commissioning, coating, processing, mechanical, structural, electrical and control/instrumentation, who were all headed by a Team Lead. The team worked remotely with TLTC to ensure the client was fully informed of the status of all activities and timelines.

The SGS review included:

Daily status calls

Preparing, reviewing and clearing punch lists

Ensuring punch list items and matters were completed on time

Physical inspections to ensure specifications were met

Witnessing of run/functional testing of main components

Documentation review

Laura Wakeham, Global Head of Industrial Supply Chain Services at SGS, said, “The SGS team in China and across Asia are available to support clients to avoid costly delays or non-conformance of their vessels, modules or equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

How product conformity assessments ensure smooth access to your target markets while upholding consumer safety and product quality.

For over a century, SGS has consistently upheld its commitment to the highest standards of integrity and compliance. Our reputation for rigorously adhering to global standards has earned us unwavering trust from customers, governmental bodies, and customs authorities alike. When SGS issues a certificate of conformity, it's a universally recognized assurance that products meet all compliance criteria, facilitating smooth customs clearance in all countries that utilize our services.

In regions like Africa, the Middle East, and other key global markets where consumers have access to a diverse product range, the imperative is clear: ensure every product's safety, quality, and compliance. Product conformity assessments stand at the forefront of this mission, acting as a safeguard against potentially subpar or hazardous goods.

What is a product conformity assessment?

A product conformity assessment is a systematic process designed to verify whether a product meets specified requirements, standards, and regulations implemented by the destination countries covered by this service. These requirements can encompass a variety of aspects, including safety, quality, environmental impact, economic impact, and performance. Conformity assessment procedures are used to assess products against established criteria, ensuring that they comply with applicable laws and regulations for the covered destination countries.

Which countries are covered by product conformity assessments?

The following countries are covered by product conformity assessments:

Algeria

Burundi

Cameroon

Central African Republic

Egypt

Ethiopia

Gabon

Gulf

Ivory Coast

Kingdom of Morocco

Kuwait

Mongolia

Oman

Qatar

Saudi Arabia

South Sudan

Tanzania

Uganda

United Arab Emirates

Zanzibar

Product conformity assessments from SGS

Our comprehensive approach is designed to streamline the compliance process for businesses, aligning seamlessly with the stringent requirements of standards authorities in the covered destination countries. Product conformity assessments from SGS enable you to achieve:

Consumer safety: by confirming that products have been tested and evaluated to cover the required parameters at the approved levels, a conformity assessment helps identify and eliminate potential hazards or risks. This helps prevent accidents, injuries, and health issues that could arise from using non-compliant or unsafe items

Quality assurance: a product conformity assessment ensures that products meet established quality standards, which in turn builds trust among consumers. High-quality products not only satisfy customers but also contribute to a positive brand reputation and long-term business success

Market access: many countries require imported goods to undergo conformity assessments to ensure they meet local safety and quality standards. Compliant products gain easier access to international markets, facilitating trade and economic growth

Fair competition: product conformity assessments prevent unscrupulous manufacturers from gaining a competitive advantage by producing substandard or counterfeit goods. This promotes fair competition and helps protect the interests of ethical businesses

Getting your Certificate of Conformity with SGS

Application: apply for our product conformity assessment service through the SGS Exporter Portal (https://exporter-portal.sgs.com/).

Evidence gathering: we collect the necessary evidence to support your declaration of conformity. This includes documents, product inspection, and, in some cases, an audit:

Test reports: your product will have undergone testing to set parameters by an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory

Certification: certification involves providing evidence that the manufacturer has met specific standards, such as ISO9001, G-Mark etc. This is a formal declaration by a third-party organization that a product meets these requirements

Inspection: Inspection procedures involve a visual examination and assessment of products to ensure they meet relevant criteria. This will include labeling accuracy, and overall product quality

Auditing: auditing involves reviewing a manufacturer's processes and documentation to ensure that they have the necessary quality control measures in place to consistently produce compliant products

Comprehensive review: our specialized teams meticulously review all gathered evidence against the standards established by the relevant authority in the destination country.

Certificate issuance: if the evidence demonstrates that your product meets the required standards and complies with the destination country's regulations, we are authorized to issue a Certificate of Conformity.

Feedback and compliance: if the evidence is found to be insufficient, we work closely with you, providing feedback and an opportunity to present amended, updated, or additional evidence. This iterative process continues until full compliance with the standards is achieved for a period permissible by the local standards authority.

This process ensures that your product meets the necessary standards, facilitating smooth access to your target markets while upholding consumer safety and product quality.

Product conformity assessments play an indispensable role in safeguarding consumer interests, ensuring product quality, and promoting fair competition in the marketplace. Businesses that prioritize conformity assessments not only protect their consumers but also enhance their reputation and market access. Being informed about product conformity assessment empowers consumers to make safer, more informed purchasing decisions, fostering a more trustworthy global marketplace.

The UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) marking is a new UK product marking that is used for goods being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales, and Scotland). It covers most goods which previously required the CE marking, known as ‘new approach’ goods.

UKCA extension

The UKCA marking came into effect on 1 January 2021. However, the UK government has bowed to industry pressure to extend the start date for the new post-Brexit certification rules for products by 12 months after being told that sticking with the intended deadline of 1 January 2022 to end recognition of the CE mark would have caused chaos across the industry.

The UKCA marking applies to most goods previously subject to the CE marking, including construction products and personal protective equipment. Under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement, goods lawfully marked with the CE mark and placed on the EU market before the end of the transition period can continue to circulate until they reach their end user, whether they are in the UK or the EU.

To learn more please GOV.UK.

As of 1 January 2022, all pressure equipment for sale in the UK must be UKCA marked. To satisfy the criteria for UKCA qualification, weld procedures and welder qualifications must be issued by a UKCA “Approved Body”, such as SGS.

To comply with UKCA there must be a documented welding procedure qualification record (WPQR) to prove the welding process or processes proposed for use in construction can produce joints that have the required mechanical properties for the intended application.

Once the WPQR has been proven a welding procedure specification (WPS) which is a written instruction based on the variables of the WPQR is produced to ensure repeatability during production by the qualified welding personnel.

A Welder Qualification Test (WQT) is carried out to prove the welder has the ability to manually manipulate the electrode / welding torch to produce welds of an acceptable quality.

SGS is here to help you with your WPQR and WQT requirements.

We are a Type A inspection body, providing full WPQR and welder qualification service. We are also a Recognised Third Party Organisation (RTPO) from the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) which means we can conduct invigilation of weld procedure qualification records and welder qualification tests for work specifically for the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations (PESR).

Peter Skillen, Weld Manager at SGS says: “Our invigilators are available nationwide and record all data needed to provide the certification. Once welding is complete, test pieces undergo mechanical testing at our UKAS accredited laboratory. Then on completion and acceptability of the test pieces our certification personnel produce the complete certification.

To ensure continuous compliance we provide a programme for monitoring and managing qualifications and requalification of a company’s welders.”

The UK is in a grace period for CE mark performed by an EU27 Notified Body, this ends on the 1 January 2022. The time to prepare for the UKCA for pressure equipment to meet the UK regulations, is now.

About Pressure Equipment UKCA:

The regulation applies to manufacturers (or Importers) of pressure equipment, such as vessels, tanks, boilers, pressurised systems process installations that are to be placed on the market for sale in the UK. The equipment will still need to meet the CE mark for PED if it being placed for sale in the EU.

Ensuring Quality and Safety: The Importance of Milk Powder Testing

Milk powder is a widely consumed and versatile product, used in various food and beverage applications. From infant formula to baked goods and confectionery, its demand continues to grow. However, ensuring the quality and safety of milk powder is paramount to protect consumers and maintain the reputation of manufacturers. This is where milk powder testing plays a crucial role. In this article, we will delve into the significance of milk powder testing, the methods employed, and how it benefits both producers and consumers.

Why is milk powder testing important?

Milk powder testing is important for quality assurance, safety assessment, shelf life determination, and regulatory compliance. It helps manufacturers ensure their products meet standards and customer expectations by analyzing parameters like composition, moisture content, and nutritional value. Testing also detects harmful bacteria and contaminants, ensuring the safety of the milk powder. Additionally, testing determines the shelf life of milk powder by assessing factors like oxidation levels and microbial growth.

Did you know we carry out our milk powder testing here in the UK?

Unlike other companies who rely on outsourcing or centralized testing facilities located outside the UK, our UK laboratories are conveniently situated within the country. This proximity allows for quicker turnaround times and more efficient communication between our laboratories and our clients. Here are some of the services we can offer:

Bulk Density Test is a method used to measure the density and packing characteristics of powdered substances. Products that have been poorly ground will have lower bulk densities as the powder does not pack as well. Bulk density may be used as an indication of flow properties.

Whey Protein Nitrogen Index (WPNI) Test helps determine the suitability and functionality of whey protein for various food and beverage applications, ensuring that the protein retains its intended properties even under heat stress.

Scorched Particles Test During the production of milk powder, high temperature processing can sometimes lead to the formation of scorched particles. This test ensures that the final product meets the desired standards of appearance, flavor, and overall quality. By identifying and removing any scorched particles, manufacturers can ensure that the milk powder maintains its intended characteristics and consumer acceptability.

Insolubility Index Test helps ensure that the milk powder meets the desired solubility standards and can be easily reconstituted without clumping or other issues. By monitoring and controlling the insolubility index, manufacturers can maintain consistent product quality and functionality.

In addition, SGS can also provide you with:

Nutritional and compositional analysis

Microbiological testing, including shelf life trials

Contaminants testing

Regulatory support

Technical labelling services

In conclusion, milk powder testing is an essential process that guarantees the quality, safety, and compliance of milk powder products. Through rigorous analysis, manufacturers can assure consumers are receiving a reliable and nutritious product free from contaminants. By investing in comprehensive testing methods and regulatory advice from our highly trained experts, producers can build trust, protect their brand reputation, and ultimately contribute to the well-being of consumers.
