On Thursday 27^th September, Sims Metal Management hosted a community event for the Sandbach Rotary Club. The aim of the event was to provide the Rotarians with an insight into our industry.

Held in Manchester the clubs group, which included the Mayor of Sandbach received a presentation and undertook a tour of our Manchester site. After a greatly received lunch the group were invited to take part in a competition and were given ‘goodie bags’ to take away.

The day was essentially a charitable / community initiative as the Rotary Club do great work whose stated purpose is to ‘bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world’.

“Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Clubs are non-political, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. Rotary’s main objective is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.”

Feedback from the group was very positive and the president expressed his appreciation to Sims Metal Management for a great insight into the industry.

Sims Metal Management - Breakfast Morning Networking event

The event will be a morning networking session for Made in the Midlands members.

The event schedule is as follows:

- Arrive at 9am for networking, tea, coffee and breakfast at the local Community Centre

- Sixty second pitch from all attendees to showcase your company, highlighting areas for collaboration within the group

- There will then be a mini bus offering a short ride to our Rabone Lane site for a mini tour

- Then back to the community centre for further networking

As we say hello to November, the final month of autumn.

What does November bring to us?

Bonfire Night

On 5 November 1605, the infamous Gunpowder Plot took place in which some Catholics plotted to blow up the English Parliament and King James l, on the day set for the king to open Parliament. The men were angry because the king had treated them badly and they didn't like it. The story is remembered each 5th November when 'Guys' are burned in a celebration known as "Bonfire Night".

Diwali

Diwali is the Hindu "festival of lights" which celebrates the New Year. Diwali is one of the most popular Indian festivals.

Armistice Day

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 the Allies and the Central Powers ended WWI with the signing of an armistice agreement. People remember the millions of soldiers who died in the two World Wars and in other wars by wearing a poppy and taking part in a two minutes silence at 11am.

Thanksgiving

America celebrates Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday in November. It is a harvest festival that dates back to 1621, the year after Pilgrims from England arrived in Massachusetts.

With Bonfire Night / weekend nearly upon us, below are some useful tips from the Fire Service to help keep you and your loved ones safe:

Keep bonfires small and manageable and build them away from houses, garages, sheds, fences, overhead cables, trees and bushes
Never use flammable liquids – paraffin or petrol – to light the fire
Keep everyone away from the fire – especially children – and keep pets indoors
Avoid drinking alcohol whilst in charge of a bonfire or fireworks
In case of an emergency, keep buckets of water, the garden hose or a fire extinguisher ready
Make sure your fireworks conform to British Standards BS 7114, EN 14035 or EN 15947
Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time
Light the firework at arm’s length using a taper or fuse wick and stand well back – never return to a firework once it has been lit
You cannot buy fireworks under the age of 18
You can be fined or imprisoned for buying or using fireworks illegally
Only children over the age of five are allowed to use sparklers and should be supervised by an adult at all times

Sims Metal Management unveils the secret world of scrap metal

The fascinating but often overlooked world of scrap metal management is being opened up to members of Made in the Midlands courtesy of Sims Metal Management.

The company is the latest member to stage a MIM breakfast networking event - only this one promises to be a little different to most similar occasions.

The visit, which takes place at the company’s Rabone Lane works in Smethwick on August 30, will take members on the recycling journey, demonstrating what happens to the scrap from the moment it arrives at the processing yard to its departure from the site having been processed.

The company will be demonstrating how its large shredder is used to scrap vehicles and what happens to the metal once it has been recovered.

The £20m plant is one of the largest in Europe and is capable of processing 1,000 tonnes of scrap a day.

The sophisticated operation spans the scrap metal spectrum from end of life vehicle (ELV) depollution to new production scrap, which involves the recovery of newer, higher grade metals.

The arrangements for the event will see those members attending gather at the Brasshouse Community Centre, Brasshouse Lane, Smethwick, where secure parking will be available.

Ken Meeson, Business Development Manager, Sims Metal Management, said: “Health and safety requirements restrict the number of people that can be shown around the processing site at any one time.

“Therefore there will be a series of 15-minute tours, each catering for between eight to ten members. We will be shuttling people between the plant and the community centre in an executive minibus as this is the easiest way of getting everyone in an out of the site safely.

“We have a lot of exciting activities planned and I think all members will find it very interesting so we’re hoping for a large turnout.

“We’ll also be organising a competition with the prize of a special centenary bottle of Sims Champagne.”

Hi-Vis clothing will be provided for the event and while members can wear protective footwear this is not mandatory as a safe pedestrian route will be in operation around the site.

Sims Metal Management stages successful Made in the Midlands networking

Made in the Midlands members were treated to a fascinating insight into the metals recycling sector at the latest breakfast networking event.

The event was hosted by Sims Metal Management and involved members being taken on a series of guided tours around the company’s Rabone Lane works in Smethwick - just one of its six sites in Birmingham and the Black Country.

Members were bussed to the site from a reception area at the nearby Brasshouse Community Centre and once at the recycling facility were shown what happens to the scrap from the moment it arrives at the processing yard to its departure ready for its onward journey, often to export markets such as Turkey, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The £20m plant is one of the largest in Europe and is capable of processing 1,000 tonnes of scrap a day, with the majority of waste recovered from scrapped cars.

The flattened vehicles are placed on a conveyor belt where they are shredded and any of the reusable metal is extracted and sent out ready for dispatch. Non-ferrous materials such as interiors and roof linings are removed and placed in landfill.

Sims is a professional metals recycling company which has evolved from a scrap metal business. The company has more than 40 sites in the UK and is especially strong in the West Midlands, where the company plays a critical role supporting local businesses.

The group employs around 660 people around the UK, with thousands more across the globe. Globally, the group operates from 250 sites - including 116 in North America.

Globally, Sims Metal Management recovers and recycles over 14 million tonnes of scrap metal a year of which two million tonnes is handled in the UK alone. To facilitate the event - and to show its support of the local community - Sims Metal Management paid for the children who would normally use the community centre on a Thursday morning to go on a visit to Cadbury World.

‘Joey the Rabbit’

Recently whilst undertaking an Environment Investigation at our SMM Smethwick Rabone Lane site, Clare Haste (Environment, Sustainability & Community Manager) found a domestic rabbit wandering along the canal towpath behind the Smethwick shredder site. After a little bit of coaxing and sweet talk Clare was able to catch the rabbit and take him back to the safety of the weighbridge office.

Once he had been settled into his temporary Sims cardboard hutch, Vikki Greer (Weighbridge Administrator at Smethwick Rabone Lane) fostered the rabbit, which she named ‘Joey’ (after Joey from friends). Vikki has since taken ‘Joey’ to Rabbit Rescue and Friends in Malvern where he will find a forever home with a new family.

Well done to Clare and Vikki for doing there bit to save little Joey!

Sims Metal Management – a brief history

Just over one-hundred years ago in 1917, in Sydney, Australia, Albert G. Sims started a small recycling business. The process of collecting material by bicycle soon graduated to horse and cart, which then gave way to motor vehicles and mechanized equipment. By the late 1930s the company known as Albert G. Sims Limited had metals recycling operations across Australia. By 1948 Albert G. Sims had listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

By the late 1980s, Sims entered the US with the acquisition of LMC Corporation based in San Francisco, and has not looked back since. Further expansion in North America included the Richmond Steel Recycling Joint Venture in 1996, the merger with Hugo Neu in 2005, the formation of the Sims Adams Recycling Joint Venture in 2007, and the merger with Metal Management in 2008.

In the United Kingdom, the Company established itself in 1995 with the formation of Sims Bird Limited, which was followed by the acquisition of McIntyre Metals in 1996, Philips Services in 2000, and Dunn Brothers in 2011.

The full international scope of the business arose with the creation of Sims Recycling Solutions in 2004. Through numerous key acquisitions and investments spanning countries as diverse as the UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Germany, the US, India, Austria, Dubai, and South Africa meant SRS achieved true global scale.

Today Sims Metal Management is the worlds leading listed metals and electronics recycler, as well as an emerging player in the Municipal Recycling and Renewable Energy industry.

Sims Group UK Limited’s are very pleased to announce the acquisition of Morley Waste Traders, with Lord & Midgley.

The business has seven sites across Leeds and three in Hull, one of which is a 2500Hp shredder operation.

These new locations are excellent additions to Sims ferrous and non-ferrous operations in the North of England.

This acquisition is integral to the development of Sims Metal Management UK metals recycling operations.
