Young Gunner Receives Life Saving Bone Marrow Transplant

In an earlier blog post from June 2021 we urged Made members to help save 18 Month Old Gunner's Life by becoming a bone marrow donor or donating to help finance vital research. Thanks to everyone who supported the cause, Gunner has received the life changing transplant on Tuesday 24th August. However, it did come with its challenges.

In March 2021 Gunner, nephew to Denise Brinton- Staysafe PPE Founder and member of Made in the Midlands, was diagnosed with MPS Type 1, a life-limiting disease that can be slowed by weekly blood transfusions and a bone marrow transplant. Denise said:

“We’ve had many setbacks including sepsis and other infections but Gunner has had his bone marrow transplant. The doctors are astounded by his resilience and we’re hoping that this major hurdle is one step closer to improving his quality of life.”

The bone marrow donor came from Germany for Gunner, however, there is still a major shortage in the UK for people needing transplants. Please donate to help towards research for this life threatening disease by clicking here.

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus there has surfaced a real threat in terms of supply issues with items that are produced in China. As this region produces 95% of the World's PPE, if your team wears PPE it's likely you will be affected.

How we saved a MIM member over £12k in 2 months

The team at Staysafe PPE are working with customers across the UK, laundering, inspecting, pairing and returning their gloves and Kevlar sleeves.

We wanted to share with you some simple data on savings in the hope that your interest will be piqued enough to get in touch and let us talk about how we can help your organisation.

How did we help a fellow MIM Member?

Since February we have been collecting a fellow MIM member's dirty Kutlass Gloves, Tornado Electroflex gloves and Kutlass Kevlar sleeves. They have also sent us their rigger gloves which we cannot launder, but we do send for incineration.

Between the end of February and the end of April we have laundered 6409 of the 3 products and returned 5898.

The fall out of 511 was where gloves, once washed were found to have damage and be unsafe for reuse. These were sent for inceneration by Staysafe. There was no fall out on Kevlar sleeves.

Savings made per glove were £2 per pair in Kutlass Gloves, £3.50 on Tornado Electroflex gloves and £2 per Kevlar sleeve. The total saving made since the first wash at the end of February to the end of April were £12,698.

These savings were based upon cost of washing vs cost of purchasing like for like replacements. We have not included cost savings for the disposal of the soiled gloves.

How are cost savings achieved?

The savings achieved are quite simply from not replacing the gloves.

Like many companies, prior to using Staysafe's service, they were disposing of their dirty gloves and Kevlar sleeves.

Now the company are achieving a longer lifespan for the gloves and as the cost of laundering them is lower than the cost of replacing them, it's a quick and simple saving.

We of course cannot add a monetary figure on savings made to the environment.

Glove and PPE washing service providers Staysafe PPE have been awarded with a certificate and trophy from The Rural Business Awards Midlands for “Best Rural Innovation” earlier this month. As regional winners, the firm has also been put forward for the National title. In addition, the company has also won the Green Apple Environmental award and will be taking a trip to the House of Lords in November to collect it.

The team at Staysafe PPE are delighted to have been recognised as the 'Best PPE and Glove recycling company' 2019 by SME News. The award has come to us thanks to one of our customers annoymously nominationating our service.

Gunner Spends Landmark 2nd Birthday at Home with Family

Last month, we published a blog post announcing the amazing news that Gunner, nephew to Denise Brinton from Staysafe PPE, received the life saving bone marrow transplant after being diagnosed with MPS Type 1. We are delighted to announce that the transplant went well, being a 99% match, and Gunner celebrated his landmark 2nd Birthday at home with his family.

11th October 2021 was marked as a very special day for young Gunner, who got to spend his 2nd birthday at home with his family - his first birthday out of hospital. Gunner’s 2nd birthday was a landmark date, as he hadn't received a transplant by then, the damage would have been irreversible and it would have started to affect his brain.

The fact that the Bone Marrow Transplant was a 99% match means that through stem cell surgery and bone marrow transplant, Gunner now has reproduced the donor’s blood and has the enzymes he needs to process sugar. This was missing in his own blood previously, which meant that his internal organs were growing too fast and were too big for his body. He will now be able to process sugar and won’t need the weekly 5 hour enzyme transfusions he was having before.

Gunner’s Mother Holly recently said to BBC news that having Gunner home for his birthday was a “dream come true.”

Denise Brinton, Staysafe PPE Founder and Aunt to Gunner Lewis-Vale is hoping that her fellow Made in the Midlands members will help to prolong her nephew's life. Gunner has been diagnosed with MPS Type 1, a life-limiting disease that can be slowed by weekly blood transfusions and a bone marrow transplant. Many people have already signed up to be donors, sent funds to finance research, and planned fund-raising events to help with the worldwide search for a donor.

18-month-old Gunner was diagnosed in March 2021, and unfortunately, there are currently no compatible donors registered in the UK, even amongst his family. Gunner needs a bone marrow transplant before he is 2 in order to limit the damage to his brain. Time is running out and the race is on!

Denise said:

“There had been ongoing concerns for Gunner’s health for some time as he has an umbilical hernia, hearing issues, and breathing problems. Though concerns were raised last year with his GP, his parents struggled to get him seen due to COVID-19.”

However, when Gunner was rushed to hospital with a virus and a 40-degree temperature, the A & E doctor recognised his symptoms and immediately sent him for further tests. His condition was later confirmed, affecting only 1 in 100,000 children.

Denise added:

“It’s still a lot for our family to take in, however, we have to act quickly so we are now urging people to come forward, register, and apply for a bone marrow test so we can find a match.”

Gunner’s consultant and the Anthony Nolan Trust have checked the donor register and are now looking in Europe as there is no UK match so far. He is now bravely having enzyme transfusions each week which last 5 hours, and he also attends several different weekly appointments including X-rays and ECGs to make sure his heart is strong enough to take the treatment. He has also been fitted with a hearing band which has opened up a whole new world for him and he is making great progress with his speech! These treatments ensure that Gunner will have the best, most comfortable life possible until a donor is found.

Gunner’s family and friends are working hard to help raise funds for his cause. On 1st July his uncle, Ben Vale and friend Andy will be doing a sponsored challenge to sit on every seat in the Shrewsbury Town football stadium, of which there are 9800 in total. It’s the ‘Ben and Andy’s Bums on Seats Challenge’. Staysafe PPE and many other local businesses are sponsoring the event, including donations and all-weather clothing.

STAYSAFE PPE WINS SHROPSHIRE CHAMBER ECO BUSINESS OF THE YEAR 2023 FOR PPE RECYCLING

We are really proud to have won the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce Eco Business of the Year award in the face of such stiff opposition. We have been recognised by our Shropshire peers for enabling many UK businesses to offset their Scope 3 CO2e emissions by washing and re-using their gloves, hi-vis and other PPE. Many of them have also won awards for recycling their PPE, and whlist we're all marching behind the sustainability banner, with cost savings of up to 70% against new spend it really is a no-brainer!

It was our ambition to divert waste PPE from landfill when we started the company in 2016 but this is no longer good enough. We now re-purpose 85% of all waste PPE which is either incorporated into new products or donated to charity. The only items we have to send for ERW (energy recovery from waste) are mixed fibre gloves. Recent research has identified a new waste stream opportunity for these as aggregates in concrete, so watch this space!

We were lucky enough to win the athletes' and team's laundry contract for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. The wealthy countries were able to commission brand new kits emblazoned with Birmingham 2022 so were always intended for single use. Many of the smaller countries' kits were heavily worn and it was sad to recognise that some of the poorer island states would soon be engulfed by rising seawater if we don't act now.

By washing and re-using PPE which is virtually all manufactured on the other side of the world, we can reduce CO2e emmissions and stop drawing on the planet's finite resources.

Staysafe PPE receives award for Resource Efficiency

At the recently held SWM 20th birthday celebrations, we were thrilled to be presented with the award for Resource Efficiency sponsored by Accelar and presented by Claire Ollerenshaw. Accelor were themselves presented with the award for Adapting to Climate Change, so congratulations to them and all the other winners and finalists last Thursday.

At Staysafe, we are passionate about reducing the impact of unwanted PPE on our environment and our intervention in the destruction of re-usable gloves and workwear. For too long it has been treated as disposable, and single use when it is soiled; but it is manufactured to be used, washed, and re-issued several times, and PPE recycling is our core business. 75% of PPE we collect is returned to be re-issued. End of life PPE is either shredded and re-purposed, or collected for energy recovery from waste, so nothing we handle goes to landfill. Furthermore, the cost of washing and repairing is around 60% lower than new replacements. With the bulk of PPE being produced in the Far East and Asia, the associated imported carbon footprint is in the region of 14.7 tonnes of CO2e for every tonne of textiles produced. (WRAP). Last year we saved around 1,000 tonnes of PPE from unnecessary destruction, and we hope this award will raise awareness so we can continue to promote the washing and re-using of PPE.

The team here at Staysafe PPE deal with dirty gloves and PPE on a daily basis. We collect or arrange collection from factories and manufacturers across the UK and then return them clean, checked and ready for reuse.

We are passionate about helping companies not only to save money on the replacement costs, but also limit the costs and enviornmental impact of adding items to landfill.

When we first started offering our service we noticed that one of our customers was paying for a recycling company to come and take away empty wire bins. We chatted and thought it would be a great idea if we would be able to take them away strip them of branding and use as 'dump bins' for employees to drop their soiled gloves and PPE.

Roll on a year and we were asked by Ford to provide some bins for their employees to use. All of our current bins were in use, so Denise jumped onto Linkedin to see whether anyone could help. We are happy to say that GKN, Denso, Frank Dudley and Sertec all jumped to help and thanks to Denise's hard work (she does like to get stuck in!) The bins are ready to be dropped off in Dagenham for this week's collection.

The award is for environmentally aware businesses which have introduced or developed innovative environmental practices, processes or technology either for use within their own business or for the marketplace.

The criteria Staysafe will be assessed on is;

Success of product or process within business or marketplace

Staysafe PPE win the BESST Sustainable Business Award for 2019

Staysafe PPE recently won BESST Sustainable Business Award for 2019 due to the number of items saved from Landfill, with a large number of these items sourced from Made in Group members.

The Business Environmental Support Scheme for Telford (BESST) is a partnership between local private and public sector businesses. Their role is to assist businesses to improve their environmental performance, in order to boost competitiveness and reduce their impact on the environment. The awards ceremony was held at the Park House Hotel in Shifnal.

In October Staysafe saved over 76,481 items from going to landfill, 33,877 of these items came from Made in Group members such as Sertec, GKN, Gestamp, Ricoh, Plastic Coatings Sims Metal Management and AE Oscroft. By laundering industrial gloves and PPE rather than throwing them away, Staysafe is saving customers money on replacement costs and reducing their carbon footprints.

Made in the Midlands member Sertec are Staysafe’s biggest customer and they save around £6,000 a month at their Tyseley facility. Denise Brinton, Business Manager at Staysafe, said this is because they clean and sanitise the company’s items which would otherwise be sent to landfill as they are classed as contaminated:

“We collect the items, wash them, inspect them and send re-usable items back to the original companies.”

“We are moving them up the waste hierarchy by reusing, and therefore they are satisfying compliance with continuous improvement and environmental KPIs.”

Denise also mentioned that anything that isn't fit for purpose is sent for high-temperature incineration for energy regeneration. She added:

“I think the main reason we received this award is that we are saving items from landfill and prolonging the life of PPE.”

The Staysafe team were thrilled when they had won the award, Denise hopes this raises the awareness of the company’s services:

“Hopefully more companies will come on board and we will be saving even more items from landfill.”

“Our aim is to stop as much as we can from being destroyed needlessly when it can be reused.”

Since winning the award the Bridgnorth based company has received enquiries from leading organisations such as Thames Water, Suez and Aston Martin Lagonda. In the last six months, Thames water has used 12,000 trousers, 50,000 pairs of gloves, 8,000 jackets, 7,000 helmets and 8,000 boots, most of which we could have saved.

Due to an increasing customer base, award winning Industrial Glove and PPE laundry service provider, Staysafe PPE are looking to grow their team.

Offering a no contract washing service from their HQ near Bridgnorth. Staysafe have saved over 71,300 items of PPE heading to landfill in October alone.

“We typically find that many companies simply have employees drop into a bin to throw away their dirty gloves, PPE and hi-viz” said Denise Brinton of Staysafe. “We offer them an alternative solution where we will collect their dirty garments and gloves, launder them in a special solution which removes dirt and bacteria. We then check for swarf and holes, pair up and send back for reuse. Not only are we helping the environment, companies are saving thousands of pounds each month by not having to replace their PPE”.

“Staysafe are asked regularly is this safe? And the simple answer is yes. Manufacturers of gloves and PPE provide washing instructions with their garments, they were never made to be used only for a day or a week. There are some items, such as Rigger Gloves that cannot be washed. But everything else is safe to do so” added Denise.

Staysafe have recently started washing for 3 large customers in the Motor, Oil and Foodstuff Industry. These new clients have triggered a need for more help at their factory and they are looking to take on at least 2 more full time employees. “We are excited to be growing our team and are hopeful that our small team will soon become much larger as more customers find the savings in using our unique service” said Denise.
