Meet Teddy Kye-Nyarko, the Head of Department for Technical and Modern Courses at Bedford College. In this video dialogue, we delve into Teddy's remarkable background in construction engineering and his transition into the world of teaching.

I'm Teddy Kye-Nyarko, overseeing technical and modern courses at Bedford College. Originally from Guyana, I pursued my BTEC qualification before embarking on studies at Kingston University in the UK, focusing on construction management. Following my university journey, I joined the British Army's Royal Engineers, contributing as an electrical and mechanical draughtsman. Eventually, I found my way into the realm of teaching at Bedford College.

Pursuing the path of Engineering and Construction from early inspiration to career choice engineering and construction have captivated me from a young age. This fascination led me to specialise in constructional engineering – a path that persisted even during my tenure in the Army, where my focus remained on engineering and construction. Looking ahead, whether teaching remains my primary avenue or not, I'm convinced I'll always be tied to the construction industry. It's conceivable that I might inspire young minds toward both teaching and construction. My commitment to construction stems from the fact that, during my school days, I realised that my strength lay in understanding how components fit together rather than rote memorisation.

The allure of Engineering and Construction making sense of complexity the essence of construction engineering resonates with my strengths, allowing me to comprehend and synthesise intricate details. Within roof construction, for instance, I can effortlessly visualise the placement of various elements and predict their roles. This domain doesn't necessitate extensive memorisation; rather, it hinges on understanding the structural puzzle. Similar to erecting a building, you don't need to foresee every single step – grasping the foundational aspects propels subsequent phases.

Choosing the path of teaching at Bedford College a transition driven by passion. After immersing myself in the Royal Engineers and acquiring skills in road and bridge construction, as well as electrical and mechanical engineering, I felt compelled to channel my expertise into teaching. My motivation was to empower and guide the younger generation, sharing the wisdom I'd gained. This aspiration led me to Bedford College, where I found an avenue to support aspiring individuals in kickstarting their careers. I embraced the opportunity to impart a deep comprehension of construction and engineering principles before they ventured into the professional world. My decision to teach at Bedford College was spurred by its location and the plethora of courses it offers, aligning perfectly with my mission.

Teddy Kye-Nyarko's journey from construction engineering to education embodies a profound dedication to nurturing future talent and equipping them with the skills needed for success in the dynamic world of construction and engineering.

Exploring the Potential and Challenges Is the integration of VR technology in classrooms poised to revolutionise education? Can it effectively enhance student engagement and minimise drop-out rates? What role does the concept of "metaversity" play in shaping the future of higher education?

Virtual Reality: A Game-Changer for Education? Virtual Reality (VR) involves the use of computer technology to create immersive simulated environments, transporting users into 3D realms through devices like Valve Index, HTC, PlayStation, and Oculus headsets. While it might seem that VR is a recent innovation, basic VR devices have been in existence since the 1970s, initially finding applications in medical, flight simulation, automobile design, and military training.

Given that VR's early applications centered on training, it's natural to wonder if the next step is to utilise VR as an educational tool across various disciplines. As far back as 2009, the University of North Carolina employed VR to explore molecular interactions, particularly in drug-protein interactions. Fast forward to today, where institutions are collaborating with VR technology on a larger scale. Morehouse College, for example, harnessed Oculus Quest 2 VR devices and the Victory XR platform to teach biology, history, and inorganic chemistry. This effort was both a response to the pandemic and an innovative approach to tackling issues related to student engagement and attendance. Initial success prompted further research, indicating that learners using VR were not only more focused but also felt a stronger connection to their lessons.

The Rise of Metaversities: A New Realm of Education Metaversity, a concept gaining traction, describes universities that embrace immersive virtual reality. In this virtual space, students and faculty can convene remotely, using VR to participate in digital classrooms and learning environments. These environments serve as more than just meeting spaces – they function as simulators where students can engage with subjects using VR headsets. Picture history lessons taking students through the underground railroad or chemistry classes allowing students to visualise and build 3D representations of molecules.

Benefits of VR in Education Metaversities hold the promise of elevating student achievement, engagement, and satisfaction through kinaesthetic (tactile) learning. VR facilitates processing information through touch, movement, and hands-on activities. Imagine learning chemistry by observing and manipulating molecules in a VR environment, or exploring the inner workings of a car engine during automotive engineering studies. This immersive learning approach enhances information retention and application, as students can recall learned concepts more quickly and effectively. Data from the Morehouse pilot and external studies by PwC support the assertion that VR significantly boosts confidence, focus, and connection to lessons.

For students, this form of kinesthetic learning bridges the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world problem-solving, setting the stage for better-equipped graduates. Educators also stand to gain, as engaged students are more likely to remain committed to their studies, ultimately improving drop-out rates and the overall reputation of courses and institutions.

Beyond Two-Dimensional Limits: The Promise of VR Considering the somewhat lackluster experience of two-dimensional remote learning, VR offers a transformative alternative to platforms like Zoom. The three-dimensional, immersive nature of VR education may be particularly attractive to non-traditional students juggling work, family, and international commitments.

Metaversities and VR: Shaping a Brighter Future? However, as excitement grows around metaversities, concerns about equity and data privacy arise. Virtual education could inadvertently exclude individuals unable to adapt to or access the technology. Moreover, the collection and misuse of personal data from VR platforms pose ethical concerns.

Across the globe, VR is already making its mark in classrooms, enhancing learning experiences in various fields, from psychology and neuroscience to engineering and architecture. The potential also extends to vocational and technical education, where students can gain hands-on training through 360-degree VR experiences.

In conclusion, the integration of VR in education holds the promise of deeper learning experiences and enhanced engagement. While challenges exist, the potential benefits for students and educators alike are undeniable. As we move forward, it's evident that VR is reshaping the landscape of education, bringing new dimensions of learning and interaction into focus. Is this the future of education? Only time will tell.

The engineering sector, while diverse, grapples with persisting diversity and inclusivity challenges, particularly in the representation of women within traditionally classified engineering roles. Nevertheless, promising strides are being made towards improved gender equality, as evidenced by the upward trajectory of female participation. In 2021, the UK witnessed a notable increase, with 936,000 women (16.5%) employed in engineering roles, as opposed to 562,000 (10.5%) in 2010. Now in 2024 will this trend increase further, hopefully the next report from Engineering UK, will shed some insights into this, but for now here is the previous report and data to look into.

Unveiling Insights from the ‘Women in Engineering’ Report Drawing from the Labour Force Survey, Engineering UK produced a comprehensive 'Women in Engineering' report outlining the trends in the engineering workforce spanning 2010 to 2021. Here's an overview of the key findings from the report.

The complete report can be accessed here.

Defining 'Engineering' Roles to establish a common understanding, the report aligns with the definitions put forth by Engineering UK, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Engineering Council. It identifies roles that meet the criteria of 'core' or 'related' engineering. 'Core' positions demand consistent application of engineering knowledge and skills, while 'related' roles encompass a blend of engineering skills with other competencies.

Where are Female Engineers Employed?

The analysis unveiled that women tend to gravitate towards 'related' engineering roles, rather than 'core' engineering positions. This pattern also exhibits variation across specific engineering sectors. Intriguingly, female engineers are more frequently found in non-engineering sector roles (24%), surpassing their presence in engineering sector roles (12.5%) by almost 50% (with male engineers constituting the remaining 63.5%).

Roles within the 'Culture, Media and Sports' domain emerged with the highest percentage of women engaged in engineering roles, numbering around 30,000. Meanwhile, Science, Engineering and Technology Associate Professionals observed an increase from 18.8% to 28.1%. Likewise, Science, Research, Engineering and Technology Professionals witnessed a rise of 21.1%.

However, these figures warrant a nuanced understanding, as the increase in women's employment was concurrent with a decrease in male participation within the sector. For instance, while female electronic engineers saw a rise of 2,500, male electronic engineers faced a decline of 15,000.

A Positive Shift with Room to Grow the report unequivocally underscores a positive trajectory, signifying the growing presence of women in the engineering sector, particularly in non-traditional roles. Yet, as a collective effort involving companies, employers, and employees, there's a continued need to champion, celebrate, and advocate for women's roles within the engineering sector.
EXPLORING INNOVATION THROUGH THE LENS OF PLAY

Observing a group of children engaged in play serves as a reminder that this is an innate activity. This is unsurprising, given the consensus among evolutionary psychologists that play, which involves imagining and simulating various scenarios, evolved as a vital adaptive mechanism. Children engage in play because it is hardwired into them; the brain's reward circuits reinforce this experience with appropriate chemicals, making it pleasurable and worth repeating.

Beyond children, mammals in general exhibit similar behaviours, raising a significant question: why? Considering the energy cost of play, why did evolution favour the retention of this ability? The argument posits that play isn't coincidental; it serves various important functions, including fostering cooperation and collaboration and providing a platform for experimenting with novel creations.

This concept becomes particularly pertinent in the context of innovation, aiding in the transformation of ideas into valuable outcomes.

Play as a Realm of Exploration

Play entails utilising physical and virtual elements to establish a secure environment for exploring new concepts. How do we transition from vague notions, inklings, and nascent ideas to more practical solutions? Not through a single leap, but through a series of stepping stones, bridges, and scaffolds—essentially, engaging with the ideas surrounding the problem. Children naturally exhibit this behaviour; as soon as they can hold and examine an object, they begin probing its potential. When they play together, they exponentially expand the array of possibilities—a simple cardboard box can effortlessly morph into a spaceship, a shop, a stage, or even a piece of clothing, all with remarkable speed.

Yet, play isn't solely about exploring the uncharted; it also equips us to navigate the complexities of existing challenges. Consider the mechanics of theatre (intriguingly, we refer to the theatrical experience as a 'play'). It provides a realm where we can grapple with and experiment with profound emotional and interpersonal complexities—our intricate social and political interactions, latent motivations, and the unveiling of concealed aspects. While the element of 'fun' might not always be evident, the theatrical arena acts as a simulator or laboratory that allows us to bring these matters into the open for exploration.

Facilitating Play through Structures

How do we facilitate and support play? Crucially, enabling structures are essential—we require spaces conducive to play. Think about how a kindergarten operates. These environments are typically not rigid classrooms; they are stimulating and dynamic physical spaces equipped with a variety of play resources such as paints and building blocks. These 'play structures' furnish the scaffolding needed for children to experiment and explore.

Increasingly, attention is directed towards creating environments conducive to innovation, as seen in examples like the Googolplex, Apple's innovative headquarters, or the Pixar studios. The notion of 'innovation labs' has become an indispensable component for any organisation, regardless of public or private sector, which is committed to innovation. These spaces recognise the necessity for dedicated areas where experimentation can flourish.

Games as Orchestrated Play

Integral to these enabling structures are games. Games essentially represent orchestrated play, where a domain is constructed with its own rules, allowing immersion and exploration. Dave Gray and collaborators suggest that games possess five key characteristics:

Game Space: This is an environment where the rules of everyday life are suspended and replaced with the game's rules, creating a temporary alternate world.

Boundaries: Games have distinct starting and ending points, often including physical boundaries like time limits and spatial confines, such as the dimensions of a football field.

Rules for Interaction: These rules dictate how the game is played and interacted within the designated space.

Artefacts: These elements enable the game's execution and provide information about the rules. Examples include counters in board games or the equipment in sports games.

Goal: Games have objectives and a point of culmination, usually defined by a winning state achieved through the fulfilment of the goal.

Games present powerful opportunities for exploring alternate realities, experimenting, and creating in a focused manner.

The GAMIFY Project

The emphasis on learning to play has gained traction within the innovation realm. The GAMIFY project, a collaborative European initiative involving universities, corporations, and intermediaries, is an example. Its core purpose is to explore the application of games in innovation and to establish patterns and processes for constructing innovation-focused games.

The project includes collaboration with companies such as 3M, Lufthansa, Danske Bank, Generali, Karnstrup, and Deutsche Telekom, developing game-based approaches to address current 'hot topic' issues in the domain. Examples include managing innovation in remote work scenarios, fostering a 'customer first' orientation, and overcoming barriers to innovation within organisations.

Playing to Learn

An additional perspective arises—not just about learning to play, but also leveraging play to learn. The potency of play lies in its ability to facilitate simulation, rehearsal, experimentation, and, crucially, failure in a secure context. Thus, employing play as an educational tool is invaluable, aligning with our innate inclinations. Numerous educational theorists, including Piaget, consider play integral to children's intelligence development. Similarly, Vygotsky highlights play's role in stretching children through social engagement and collaboration, reinforcing existing knowledge and venturing into new territories.

Games hold substantial value within the learning process because they infuse it with enjoyment. The motivation to explore and acquire new knowledge is not always easily aroused, which underscores the importance of the aforementioned reward circuits.

Moreover, games provide a safe space for experimentation. The fear of failure and its consequences is mitigated within this domain. Consequently, whether the objective is understanding the intricacies of a new product, redefining value propositions, or addressing complex organisational challenges, game-based approaches stand as valuable tools within our innovation toolkit.

Playing for Significant Outcomes

The context we find ourselves in underscores the necessity for innovation. While immediate innovation efforts might concentrate on returning to a semblance of normalcy through incremental improvements, there's ample room for the kind of imaginative thinking that emerges from playing with novel concepts.

Perhaps George Bernard Shaw's insight, originally pertaining to individuals, holds true for organisations as well: 'We don’t stop playing because we get old; we get old because we stop playing'

TecQuipment Ltd is 63 years old having been established by Joseph Pope and William Cope in 1958. Simon Woods took over as the sole shareholder and Managing Director in 2008 and has since nurtured TecQuipment to become the global, trusted company that it is today.

Woods comments on the move to employee-ownership “With ownership comes a passion and an engagement that an employee without a stake in the business may never experience. My motivation to transfer the company to the employees was to leave a legacy for the people that have become part of my family, the TecQuipment family. I believe passionately in the people that make up TecQuipment and the importance of offering high quality education to everyone around the world. The idea of selling the company to another organisation via a trade deal was of no appeal, despite the potential financial gain.”

An Employee-Owned Trust has been set up that puts the TecQuipment employees in the driving seat of managing the company’s future. An Employee Forum that consists of members of each department within the company represents the employees as the primary shareholders in the business. Two members of this Forum have been appointed to the TecQuipment Trustees Board of Directors, Darren Joynes and Nick Cruddas. TecQuipment Ltd board comprises Jon Chicken (Sales and Marketing Director), Paul Wilkinson (Technical Director), Sue Dean (Finance Director) and Simon Woods as the Managing Director.

“To have a share in the company you work for means that everyone feels the benefit of the success. We are excited for what the future holds.” Said Nick Cruddas one of the two employee members of the TecQuipment Trustee Board Directors.

TecQuipment will maintain its ambitions to provide cutting-edge teaching solutions that ensure engineering education is inclusive and flexible, adapting to changing constraints and different teaching models of institutions around the world.

Navigating the ever-changing landscape of product offerings requires continuous evolution and innovation. In 2018, TecQuipment embarked on a project centred on assessing the practical aspects of engineering education. The project highlighted key considerations such as enhancing practical teaching, managing costs, equipment availability, and optimising lab utilisation.

Building on the insights gained from this project, a subsequent research initiative was undertaken in 2021. This involved the distribution of a survey through email and social media channels to gather valuable market insights. The aim was to discern the prevailing trends in engineering education and identify avenues for product enhancement that would remain pertinent and valuable to customers. The collected survey data formed the basis for an internal focus group to brainstorm new product solutions. Subsequently, an external focus group comprising academics was engaged to evaluate and refine these proposed solutions.

For a comprehensive understanding of the market, research becomes an ongoing endeavour, ensuring continued relevance. The central goal of TecQuipment's research was to amass insights that would guide the direction of our product development strategy. The survey revealed that educators perceive inadequate funding as a significant challenge in engineering teaching. This was closely followed by the observation that practical lab experiences often lack real-world connections. Other challenges included a shortage of skilled staff and students' limited hands-on capabilities. Educators believed that these issues could be addressed by incorporating real-world examples, enhancing student engagement strategies, providing more hands-on equipment time, and fostering collaboration between accreditation bodies and institutes.

The outcomes of the internal focus group generated solutions in four key domains: digital enhancements, physical tools, novel learning methods, and video integration. These solutions were then presented to the external academic focus group, tasked with evaluating their feasibility and relevance to engineering education. Both focus groups endorsed the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) as a powerful tool for student engagement and learning. While focus group 1 envisioned using mobile phones as sources for data input and capture with our Virtual Data Acquisition Systems (VDAS), focus group 2 suggested incorporating mobile phones as experimental sensors within lab exercises.

AR emerged as a versatile tool for visualising complex concepts, offering applications ranging from 3D imagery of products and interactive experiments to troubleshooting and stress analysis. Interactive worksheets and templated graphs were also highlighted as aids to enhance student understanding.

Practical skills development was emphasised by both focus groups. Group 1 championed hands-on product assembly in lab sessions, enabling students to encounter real-world errors and challenges. Group 2 discussed the inclusion of simulated faults to teach the distinction between precision and accuracy, alongside personal risk assessment.

The research underscored future avenues for product development that resonated with the engineering educational market. Translating these findings into actionable points, TecQuipment seeks to incorporate these solutions into our product offerings, ensuring that customer needs remain at the forefront of their product development journey.

Despite the growing awareness of the importance of education accessibility, a substantial number of individuals are still deprived of this fundamental right. Shockingly, approximately 262 million young people globally lack access to basic school-based education, as reported by Newsweek. This education disparity stems from factors like poverty, marginalization, and insufficient resources, especially in developing, conflict-affected, or densely populated regions.

However, a glimmer of hope shines through the efforts of numerous organisations worldwide that are actively challenging this status quo. Here are five remarkable organisations pioneering creative avenues to enhance education accessibility:

eVidyaloka

Based in Bengaluru, India, eVidyaloka is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering underprivileged children in rural areas with educational opportunities. Utilising technology as a catalyst, they establish digital classrooms in regions facing teacher shortages. Through interactive classes and educational videos, eVidyaloka connects students with volunteer teachers globally, offering quality virtual learning experiences.

Bridge International Academies

Bridge International Academies is addressing educational accessibility in low-literacy regions, particularly in countries like Kenya and Uganda. By establishing schools in remote areas, often with low-income families, they enable quality education for children. Equipped with trained teachers, personalised learning approaches, and data-driven programs, Bridge International Academies ensure optimised learning experiences for these communities.

FIRST

"For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" (FIRST) actively engages disadvantaged youth in the United States and Canada. Through mentor-based programs, FIRST nurtures leadership and skills in STEM fields. The organisation specialises in robotics programs within schools and afterschool activities, awarding grants to schools and community organisations to enhance STEM education opportunities for young learners.

ElevateMeD

In the United States, ElevateMeD addresses the financial barriers hindering aspiring medical students. Recognising the high costs associated with medical studies, the organisation provides financial assistance to students from underrepresented backgrounds, with a focus on racial and ethnic diversity. ElevateMeD strives to create a medical workforce that reflects the communities it serves.

CoachBright

London-based CoachBright partners with schools to elevate the academic performance of students from low-income backgrounds. Their focus is on enhancing students' prospects for higher education and apprenticeships. Instead of scholarships or school construction, CoachBright employs tutoring and coaching to help individuals aged 10-30 unlock their full potential and thrive in their academic journey.

Moreover, beyond these five remarkable organisations, there are countless more with equally impactful missions. For instance, the Philippines-based Dynamic Teen Company reaches out to street children, offering non-formal education and guidance, while promoting literacy and personal growth.

In the midst of educational inequities persisting across the globe, these organisations stand as beacons of hope, breaking down barriers and fostering accessible learning opportunities. As they continue to champion creativity, advocacy, and innovative solutions, education becomes attainable even in the most challenging environments.

–––––

ASSEMBLY AND TESTING OF STRAIN GAUGES: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

Welcome to this instructional guide on how to assemble and test strain gauges. In this comprehensive walkthrough, our experienced Strain Gauge Technician, Andi, will show you the process of preparing, assembling, and testing strain gauges to ensure accurate measurements for your projects.

Understanding Strain Gauges

Strain gauges are essential devices used to measure the deformation of materials under stress. These delicate instruments require careful handling during assembly to ensure optimal functionality. Before you begin, create a clean and organized workspace, and gather all the necessary tools and materials.

Safety First

Since this process involves the use of chemicals, prioritize your safety. Wear appropriate protective clothing, gloves, goggles, and follow proper safety protocols to prevent any accidents.

Step 1: Preparing the Substrate

Apply a suitable amount of M-PREP conditioner onto the substrate, the surface to which you'll attach the strain gauge.

Gently clean the area using silicon carbide paper to ensure proper adhesion between the substrate and the strain gauge. This step removes dirt and debris.

Wipe off the conditioner using gauze, starting from the center and moving outward to prevent dirt from being pulled back in.

Apply M-PREP neutralizer to the substrate. Thoroughly clean the substrate using cotton wool swabs to remove any remaining residue.

Wipe off the neutralizer with fresh gauze, again using an outward motion to avoid re-contaminating the substrate.

Step 2: Assembling the Strain Gauge

Repeat the same cleaning process with the glass plate, where you'll initially assemble the strain gauge before attaching it to the substrate.

Using tweezers, carefully lift and position the solder tag on the glass plate, ensuring not to touch the tag itself.

Gently remove the strain gauge from its protective packaging with tweezers and place it on top of the solder tag. The tag provides support and prevents accidental strain gauge damage.

Place Mylar tape over the strain gauge, ensuring it lies flat against the gauge. Trim excess tape with a scalpel.

Align the tape-covered strain gauge onto the substrate. Avoid touching the gauge directly; handle only the tape.

Pull the tape back slightly, lifting the strain gauge off the substrate.

Allow a controlled amount of glue to drip onto the substrate without contacting the strain gauge.

Move the tape slightly to spread the glue evenly across the strain gauge using clean gauze and tape.

Carefully place the strain gauge back onto the substrate. Press down with your finger for about a minute to fuse the glue and strain gauge together.

Gradually remove the tape while holding the substrate, cutting the gauge legs with a scalpel as you go.

Apply a small piece of soft adhesive or masking tape to protect the gauge during soldering.

Step 3: Soldering and Testing

Solder the strain gauge legs to the solder tag using a soldering iron.

Test the resistance of the assembled strain gauge. For a 350 ohm gauge, the readings should align with this specification.

Step 4: Finalizing the Assembly

Strip the wire ends and add a small amount of solder.

Attach the wires to the strain gauge using the solder iron and the existing solder.

Clean off any flux glue and paper using Rosin Solvent to prevent skewed readings due to residue conductivity.

Apply epoxy glue over the wire tips to secure them.

Allow the glue to dry, then evenly spread silicon over the entire strain gauge using a toothpick, being cautious not to touch the gauge.

Clean the edges of the gauge with a cotton bud and allow it to dry.

Congratulations, you've successfully assembled and tested a strain gauge! This meticulous process ensures accurate measurements and reliable results for your projects. We hope you've found this guide useful and informative.

Despite decades of efforts to bridge the gender gap in STEM fields, persistent inequalities persist. A recent study by Kuchynka, Eaton, and Rivera examines the macro and micro systems that contribute to this disparity and offers insights into potential solutions.

Closing the gender gap in STEM unraveling the complex puzzle over the past thirty years, extensive STEM outreach and interventions have been implemented in the United States. However, gender inequality endures. In 2019, women accounted for a mere 27% of the STEM workforce, with women of color representing just 5% of that demographic. Similar trends are observable worldwide, with countries like Austria, the UK, Portugal, the UAE, and Asia grappling with a gender imbalance in STEM professions.

Understanding the Roots: The Macro and Micro Systems Kuchynka, Eaton, and Rivera delve into the intricacies of this issue by examining both macro and micro systems. The macrosystem encapsulates cultural elements influencing early childhood development, while the microsystem represents the immediate environment that shapes an individual's early growth—families, schools, and peers.

Macro Factors: Stereotypes and Gender Bias. The authors uncover that cultural stereotypes and gender-based assumptions undermine girls' interest and success in STEM while reinforcing male dominance. These biases perpetuate the gender status hierarchy and contribute to girls feeling less knowledgeable and capable in STEM.

Micro Dynamics: Implicit bias and socialisation microsystem influences, encompassing explicit and implicit biases, expectancies, attributions, and identity pressures, further perpetuate gender inequality in STEM. The cumulative effect of these systems during childhood development results in reduced psychological inclination among girls to pursue STEM paths.

Despite often outperforming boys in STEM studies, girls encounter "increased STEM anxiety, lower self-efficiency, weaker STEM identities, and lower STEM career aspirations." The root cause is no differences in natural ability but rather divergent socialisation of boys and girls.

Consequences of the Gender Gap beyond being an issue of equity, the gender gap in STEM carries significant societal implications. Untapped STEM talent hampers efforts to address labor shortages in STEM fields. Promoting diversity within these fields contributes to innovation, global competitiveness, and sustainable economic growth, essential for achieving economic justice.

Solutions for change shaping an inclusive future Kuchynka, Eaton, and Rivera's study highlights the need to curate STEM learning environments that challenge traditional gender roles and behaviours. To this end, they propose seven practice recommendations and three policy suggestions for K-12 education. These efforts aim to foster gender egalitarianism, intergroup cooperation, and collaboration within STEM learning environments.

Starting Early: Initiatives for change early interventions are crucial. Projects like W-STEM aim to transform higher education institutions' processes to increase women's participation in STEM programs. "Mind the Gap" empowers teachers to spark girls' interest in STEM subjects, boosting their confidence to pursue STEM degrees. "Computational Thinking for Girls (CT4G)" engages girls in computer science activities, fostering enthusiasm for STEM.

Empowering Through Experience Hands-on initiatives: such as Code Camp, offer girls the chance to explore robotics, programming, and app development. These immersive experiences inspire curiosity, resilience, and problem-solving skills, enabling girls to perceive STEM as exciting and attainable.

The Future of Gender Equity in STEM. The gender gap in STEM continues to be a multifaceted challenge. With an understanding of its roots and innovative initiatives, the path toward empowering girls in STEM becomes clearer. By fostering inclusive learning environments, early interventions, and immersive experiences, we can envision a future where the gender gap is a thing of the past.
