TMS secures Cornish schools contracts

A Cornwall grounds maintenance firm has won a raft of public sector contracts across the county, secured by mesh fencing from the Midlands.

Team Maintenance Services (TMS) Limited has recently installed almost a kilometre of fencing at a school and academy near St Austell.

TMS replaced 400m of 3m high fencing and gates around three tennis courts and a car park at mixed secondary Brannel School in St Stephen-in-Brannel.
It has also installed 450m of perimeter fencing and automated gates controlled via a keypad and intercom at Treverbyn Academy, which caters for nursery and primary school age children.

The Brannel School installation employed Duo8 Super Rebound fencing from Wolverhampton mesh fencing systems manufacturer Zaun. The twin horizontal wire panels are highly durable, low maintenance, graffiti-proof and offer great rebound properties similar to a wall.

TMS currently maintains landscaping, fencing and trees at many schools in Cornwall, including five secondary schools, along with parish councils, retail parks, industrial sites and private properties.

TMS is a family owned business, established 16 years ago, with accreditation with CHAS, SafeContractor and ContractorPlus, and all staff DBS checked.

JB Corrie accreditation means four approved to install ArmaWeave

A fourth company has been accredited to install ArmaWeave, an approved high-security perimeter fencing system manufactured by Zaun.

Specialist fencing installers JB Corrie has committed to training its site operatives in the installation methods for ArmaWeave developed by Zaun over time to make best use of its unique high-security woven fabric.

Impressed with the versatility of the system, Corries are now installing the Zaun mesh on several security sites.

With their new accreditation, JB Corrie now brings the number of approved installers of ArmaWeave to four, alongside expert installers Allen Fencing Limited, systems integrator Crime & Fire Defence Systems and premier prison fencing installer Binns Fencing, a Zaun subsidiary.

Corries Contracts Director Norton Welch said: We are delighted to have received this accreditation and look forward to working closely with Zaun to install their security products in the future.

The company which has been going more than one hundred years and is now in the ownership of the fourth generation Corrie family installs integrated perimeter protection systems for high security applications and boasts military bases, utilities, power stations and airports among its clients.

Zaun established the installer scheme after increasing requests from customers to recommend contractors with suitable installation, quality and safety standards.

ArmaWeave is produced on the worlds largest steel loom at Zauns West Midlands manufacturing base. It has unique properties that give it distinct advantages against more traditional welded mesh systems, such as panels that can be raked to accommodate slopes. Therefore, installers require the necessary skill sets to set this up.

The wire of the panels has a tensile strength typically more than double welded panels so special methods are needed for cutting the panels during installation.

Zaun trained JB Corries installation teams on the properties and tolerances of ArmaWeave and how it is manufactured. The training is for fencers with proven experience in high-security fencing work who are sponsored by a company that can demonstrate its professionalism through membership of a relevant trade organisation and valid UKAS accredited ISO9001 certification.

The certificate of training is only valid while the individual is working for the host company. This ensures the trained individuals are working properly under quality management to install the product.

With its partners, Zaun hopes to increase the adoption of ArmaWeave as the standard for secure sites of Critical National Infrastructure such as utilities, data centres and nuclear sites while ensuring consistent installation quality.

Zaun raids rival for champion Bailes

The Zaun Group has secured an industry champion from a market leader to spearhead selling its integrated portfolio and turnkey solutions.

Steve Bailes has joined Zaun as integrated business development manager from a similar role for the past seven years with Gallagher Security Europe Ltd.

Prior to that Bailes was at Betafence, where he worked alongside Zaun head of sales Chris Plimley and, among other projects, originated some of the fencing that ultimately Zaun installed for the London 2012 Olympics.

Bailes represented Gallaghers at the British Security Industry Association, working on British Standards in electric fencing and other physical security systems. He also has experience in access control along with perimeter detection incorporating CCTV integration alongside high security perimeter fencing systems and standard fencing for sports and education.

He said: The Zaun Group's broad range of products that spans right across my working background massively appeals to me. So I'm looking forward to working together with a team of people to really grow the Zaun businesses.

That will entail bringing the physical systems together with EyeLynx's electronics and the contracting option of Binns Fencing to provide turnkey solutions and supply to major clients and customers through long-term relationships.

Tennis the first priority for London park transformation

The redevelopment of tennis courts in a London borough park are the first priority in a 15-year masterplan.

The London Borough of Hounslow’s planning committee approved Gunnersbury 2026 in January 2016 to unlock the potential of sports facilities at Gunnersbury Park – with tennis courts the first priority and a new indoor community sports hub.

Essex-based ETC Sports Surfaces has completed the eight outdoor tennis courts with floodlights, while the sports hub is scheduled to open in summer 2019.

ETC worked alongside Zaun Ltd, who manufactured and supplied 414m of 3m high Duo6 Advantage tennis sports fencing with six single leaf gates and two divider fences with a central 3.5 m wide walkway between courts.

Zaun’s Advantage tennis court fencing system can withstand heavy use with a 42.85mm x 200mm twin wire mesh pattern that won’t let balls through yet allows a great view of on-court action.

It offers better whole-life value than chain-link fencing, which is easily cut with pliers for unauthorised use, and deforms quickly when people lean against it.

Ten grass football and rugby pitches, four cricket pitches and two full-size 3G artificial grass pitches with floodlights are also planned.

Gunnersbury Park, jointly owned by Hounslow and Ealing councils, features one Grade I listed and one Grade II listed Georgian mansions, as well as many historical buildings all set within the stunning community park.

The site is undergoing major transformation since the councils secured two grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2014 to overhaul the museum and make major improvements to the park landscape.

The aim of the project is to transform Gunnersbury Park into a sustainable, high quality public space that serves the local community. The plans include the creation of a diverse mix of culture, heritage, events, sports and recreational activity to add to a rich history that the councils want to preserve.

Thames Water awards major ArmaWeave security upgrades

The UK's largest water and waste company has awarded two multi-million-pound perimeter protection contracts to security fencing systems manufacturer Zaun Ltd.

Thames Water Utilities extended its Security and Emergency Measures Direction framework agreement with Zaun for the supply and installation of security fencing and gates for a further two years as part of the current Asset Management Programme, AMP6, to enable the award of the latest contracts.

The first contract is for the design of perimeter protection for seven sites that have been awarded through the Costain Atkins and Black & Veatch eight2O joint venture.

Thames Water has awarded the second contract to Zaun to supply and install around 11km of perimeter protection for four of the seven sites.

Jon Lorimer at Thames Water said: “Securing the perimeter is a key part of our plan to deliver safe drinking water to our nine million customers.”

Zaun will supply its ArmaWeave woven mesh fencing system, which will be installed by subsidiary Binns Fencing, around the perimeters and various compounds and buildings.

ArmaWeave – which is unique to Zaun, as is the ability to rake it – one of Zaun’s most intruder-resistant products, is produced on the world’s largest mesh weaving machine at the company’s West Midlands manufacturing base.

Lorimer said: “Zaun’s expertise and experience in designing and installing unique solutions with ArmaWeave, not least for Thames Water, has enabled us to deliver the securest solution possible.”

The two contracts to date form a multi-million-pound package. The work is part of the AMP6 programme to bring Thames Water’s estate up to Defra standards and fully prepare for any security eventuality.

Thames Water manages more than 4,500 sites that require security to protect the water supply to over 14 million people.

Accidental pollution, the safety hazard of sewage, the potential for theft and even mindless vandalism all mean site safety and security is paramount.

Diabetes UK honour Lewis family on back of charity golf and ball

A Walsall family has been honoured with a national diabetes fundraising award after a golf day and charity ball took their funds raised over the £50,000 mark.

Diabetes UK awarded the Lewis family both their regional and national Inspire Awards for their amazing work to raise funds for research to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes after their son Michael died in October 2015 from complications related to the illness.

Mother and father Cheryl and Tim Lewis and their other son, Nathan, are passionate about raising funds and awareness so set up the Michael Lewis Foundation in March 2016.

Alongside fellow trustees Steve Roberts, Michaels uncle, and Chris Edwards, Cheryls boss, they have organised numerous events to raise money including holding a charity gig in Birmingham, golf days, football matches and tough mudders and have already exceeded £50,000

They raised a phenomenal £25,000 last year while raising awareness of the condition by working with schools, companies and other organisations to share their story.

In the past month, they have organised a charity ball in Sutton Coldfield that raised a further £8,320.

And Steve, who is also marketing manager for security fencing systems manufacturer Zaun Limited, organised a Security Industry Charity Golf Day at Walsall Golf Club that raised another £8,300. He plans to make it an annual event.

Michael died after suffering a cardiac arrest in his sleep on 25 November 2015 while working in Dubai, aged only 20. The family believe he died of Dead In Bed syndrome, associated with type 1 diabetes.

Michael had lived with the condition since the age of four, but never allowed it to prevent him achieving his goals.

Dad Tim said: Unfortunately, Michael will never see the positive impact his life has had on so many people young and old. His infectious personality led him to inspire and motivate people to believe they can achieve whatever they desire.

He believed that the barriers we come up against in life are there only because we put them there. Remove them and anything is possible.

We as a trust want to do anything we can to stop any other families from having to go through this heartache so we will be raising funds for Diabetes UK to help to try to find a cure.

Steve added: We want to say a massive thank you to all of the sponsors and teams at the golf day and give a nudge to them to come back again next year!"

Appropriately, the foundation team won the event, with GMS second and Binns Fencing third. Chris Gould of PWS Ballistics Screens hit the longest drive and Chris Todd of Major Events International won nearest the pin.

Integrated perimeters CPD at London Build Expo

Perimeter protection group Zaun will be educating main contractors, architects and specifiers on integrated perimeter systems later this month.

Zaun will be running its RIBA-approved CPD seminar Perimeter and Integrated Systems, The Trusted Advisor at the London Build Expo at London Olympia on 25 and 26 October.

Steel fencing manufacturer Zaun Limited will be exhibiting at stand L13A alongside electronic and electrified perimeter security systems business Harper Chalice, a channel partner for its EyeLynx CCTV and video analytics.

The RIBA-assessed seminar helps architects fulfil their annual CPD requirements and is worth double points to RIBA Chartered Architects, for whom CPD is mandatory

Business development manager Steve Bailes, who will deliver the 50-minute seminar at 1.20pm on day two, 26 October, said: This is all part of our determination to get closer to architects, contractors and specifiers and to help them understand better how they can design and build better perimeter security solutions for clients.

Binns focuses FCA on delivering for its members

The Fencing Contractors Association (FCA) is on a mission to re-engage fully with members and adopt their priorities as its mission guide.

That's the mandate on which incoming chairman Adam Binns believes he has been elected, since taking office for his two-year term at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 25 February.

The AGM ratified the appointment of Administration Services Ltd (ASL) who tabled a report at the meeting on its survey of all 150 members to replace retiring general secretary Wendy Bakeras FCA administration.

In advance of the AGM, she said: "After almost 18 years service, it will be my pleasure to have the opportunity to say a proper goodbye to the members who I have been extremely proud to represent during my tenure."

Binns said: "The ASL survey gives us an honest and independent insight on what were doing at the moment and on what is valued by members so we can move the association forward and really start to deliver what they say is important to them.

"And we have cut our running costs by a third, so there is more money free to promote the FCA and its Certified Contractors scheme."

The Binns Fencing MD, along with his FCA vice chairman Nick Dybeck, a director of HW Martin, lead a rejuvenated Council, which next met on 21 April to review strategy and plot a plan for the future.

Rob Oliver of ASL said: "What came through loud and clear from the survey is that members are very keen for the FCA to continue to promote the fencing industry as professional and for the association itself to be the badge of quality within it.

"Furthermore, given the size and scale now of the industry, we ought to be able to grow membership from our current figure of 150."

Oliver said other member priorities included training and its promotion, especially given the national focus on apprenticeships and the fact that the industry now has a trailblazer apprenticeship standard in development.

Members also want better communications, with regular newsletters, emails and briefings; more events and reasons to get together on matters of common interest; and for the FCA to be the go to for guidance and business help with appropriate helplines and experts.

He said ASL is looking at how much each of the helplines is used and will table proposals soon on which to enhance and which to shelve and how best to harness the expertise in the Council and beyond.

Binns concluded: "The bottom line is we have to deliver real value and a reason to belong to members if we are to grow and strengthen our membership and the services we offer.

"And we are open to talking to other associations such as the PSSA and the EFIA to pool resources and strengthen our offering if it gets things working for our industry as a whole."

The ASL team of Oliver, Robert Osborne and Kim Fitzpatrick has many years' experience of working for trade associations, mostly in the construction sector, including the PSSA, which is widely acknowledged as having some overlap with the FCA.

The FCA was established in 1942 to help the buying of timber and other fencing materials to support the war effort. It has four specialist sub groups: the Association of Safety Fencing Contractors, the Environmental Noise Barrier Association, the Electrical Security Fence Federation and the Gate Automation and Access Barrier Association.

Wetlands project opens up East London 'open-air lung'

An £8.7m visitor centre to open up access to one of the East Ends open-air lungs has been completed at a strategic 500-acre Thames Water site.

The Walthamstow Wetlands project allows visitors to enjoy and learn about the Walthamstow Reservoirs distinctive built and natural heritage, which is unique in London.

Because the area includes water treatment stations and other operational sites it needed protection to separate public areas from CNI zones, for which Thames Water has ordered security fencing through Binns Fencing.

Binns have installed ArmaWeave, HiSec and Axiom steel mesh from parent company Zaun around strategic Thames Water assets, while Duo fencing, sliding gates and railings have been included at all main entrances. Oak Habitat gates and post and wire fencing provide a more natural boundary to non-secure areas.

The principal contractor of the project was London-based construction company Rooff, a family-run business with a track record stretching back 100 years.

The areas distinctive nature stems from the sites importance as a historic operational landscape that supplies drinking water to London, and its rich biodiversity, which is of international importance for water birds.

The concept is to create a green core of naturalised landscape at the heart of the reservoir complex with a generous pathway through the centre of the site and connecting to the strategic pedestrian and cycle route through the middle of the Lee Valley.

The project was designed by architect Witherford Watson Mann and landscape architects KLA, with engineers P3r and TALL, consultants Studio Dekka and collaborating organisation Counterculture also involved.

The reservoirs importance as a potential nature reserve was recognised as early as 1945 by Professor Patrick Abercrombie, who said: A series of great reservoirs [is] acquiring a charm of [its] own as trees grow round them and on their little islands they are becoming nature reserves for large numbers of birds and the resort of privileged fisherman.

These areas are a great open-air lung to the crowded East End their preservation is essential...Every piece of open land should be welded into a great regional reservation.

Zaun develops SR3 fencing for rail and other CNI applications

A high-security fence for rail and other critical national infrastructure applications that resists for more than five minutes sustained attack with specialist power tools has been developed by steel mesh fencing manufacturer Zaun.

Zaun has received a revised Certificate of Product Approval from the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) to include its brand new CorruSec SR3 approved to Security Rating 3.

The fencing system incorporates corrugated HiSec 3-5-10 mesh sandwiched between further panels of HiSec 3-5-10, a special welded steel wire fence panel similar to the type of mesh usually used for prison fencing, whose name is derived from its mesh size 3" × 0.5" × 10 gauge.

The original concept was the idea of Zaun co-founder and director Alastair Henman and has been developed by research and development manager Adam Christie.

Christie explains: Alastair conceived the design by looking at the construction of cardboard, in particular the corrugated kind, and how the corrugated element created a much stronger three-dimensional material.

So, we started experimenting with a corrugated mesh centre section to give fencing greater rigidity and increase its thickness without adding much to the material content and weight, to counter the kind of tools attackers might use.

CorruSec SR3 has been subjected to sustained attack by testers from the Buildings Research Establishment (BRE) wielding a range of hand and power tools, yet they could not breach the CorruSec SR3 in less than five minutes.

The fencing system is manufactured to BS1722 Part 14 and is approved at heights from 2.4 to 6m above the ground, in ground or base plated options.

Each individual panel features a 76.2mm x 12.7mm mesh configuration with 3mm horizontal and vertical wires. The corrugated section is pressed to approximately 100mm in depth. All three layers are bolted together using bolts fixed into place in a grid pattern throughout the combined fence panel.

CorruSec SR3 provides good through visibility for use with CCTV cameras, while security toppings can be added to suit.

Henman says: The current specification for CrossRail stations is a 5-minute fence, so we set about seeing if we could create a viable product.

Across our customer base, operators of critical national infrastructure are upgrading their most sensitive sites given heightened fear of terrorist threats and the advances in technology, such as our CorruSec product.

As well as rail applications, SR3 fencing is ideal for protecting assets at water utilities, oil and gas compounds, data centres and other sites of critical national importance.

Further Zaun security systems have achieved Security Ratings including their HiSec Super10, Duo8 and HiSec 358 systems (certificate number 1164a/05) and are entered into the Red Book for LPS 1175: Issue 7.

To maintain accreditation and a listing in the LPCB Red Book, manufacturers must regularly demonstrate to independent auditors that they are producing products consistent with those tested. This gives the customer the guarantee that they are getting a secure and quality product.

Products approved by LPCB are rigorously tested for resistance to deliberate attack and play an important role in protecting people and property against physical attack, burglary, vandalism and terrorism.

LPS 1175 specifically covers the approval and listing of intruder resistant building components, strongpoints, security enclosures and free-standing barriers.

It is the result of many years of work by LPCB, UK government, insurers and police. It has rapidly become a core element of physical security specification across many sectors.

Lovely jubbly - Hammers' Stadium kick-off makes Zaun all bubbly

Bubbles were blown for the first time at the new London Stadium on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and champagne corks popped when West Ham Uniteds historic home Premier League curtain raiser kicked off last month.

And celebrations rang out in Wolverhampton too, as the match heralded potentially the final leg of steel fencing manufacturer Zaun's Olympic Stadium relay.

The Hammers played Bournemouth on Sunday 21 August at 4pm. The game was broadcast live on SkySports1 and was their first Premier League home outing since their move from The Boleyn Ground at Upton Park, where they played for the past 112 years.

That was made possible by the latest reincarnation of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium as a permanent home for West Ham and a national competition centre for British Athletics.

Balfour Beatty was appointed to transform the former Olympic Stadium into a year-round multi-use venue that will deliver a lasting sporting, cultural and community legacy in east London.

The transformation included installing the largest roof if its kind in the world, a community track, innovative retractable seating, spectator and hospitality facilities and external landscaping.

Zaun was the principal 2012 Olympics fencer and has returned to the Olympic Stadium on several occasions, first decommissioning after the 2012 Paralympics, then reconfiguring and removing security fencing for last autumn's Rugby World Cup.

Previously in July, the London Stadium played host to the Muller Anniversary Games and the likes of Golden Olympian Brits Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill and Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt in a final pre Olympics workout.

Bolt, who won triple Gold at London 2012 and Rio 2016 and holds the 100m and 200m world records, retained his record of never having lost in the stadium when he won the 200m in spite of a recent hamstring injury.

Zaun has supplied 5m-high security-rated Duo8 SR1 fencing together with gates and spectator railings for this latest revamp, installed by group company Binns Fencing.

South Staffs protects water intake with cutting edge systems

South Staffs Water (SSW) has Improved the security at one of its main reservoirs as part of AMP6, the latest Asset Management Programme in the water industry, using state of the art detection, alarms and fencing systems.

SSW appointed electronic and electrified perimeter security system experts Harper Chalice to secure the pier that allows engineers to access the reservoir intake.

Harper Chalice worked with steel fencing manufacturer Zaun for its HiSec Super10 fencing system believed to be the first single mesh to be certified to Security Rating 2.

Designers, engineers and installers from Harper Chalice and Zaun worked alongside SSWs main contractor, Integrated Water Services, to deliver the complete solution.

Zaun designed bespoke raked panels on the approach to prevent intruders from using the bridge handrails as climbing aids to scale the fencing, along with specialist design for Binns Fencing to install the panels from the inside at the waters edge.

The fencing was further protected with Harper Chalices FenceSecure Perimeter Intrusion Detection system (PID), a CPNI approved PID system for protection of government specified sites of Critical National Infrastructure.

The 100% British solution was integrated into existing on-site security management systems and Galaxy alarms.

SSW resilience manager Kate Wilkes said: We have used Harper Chalice PIDs on several sites across our estate and they have performed really well with low false alarm rates. This solution provides exceptional security for the reservoir intake.

South Staffs Water was formed in 1853 and now supplies high quality drinking water to 1.6 million people predominantly in the Black Country and Staffordshire, and since 2013 and a merger with Cambridge Water, in East Anglia.

Super10 was certified to LPS 1175 SR2 (certificate number 1164a/01) by the Loss Prevention Certification Board and entered into Issue 7 of the Red Book.

SharpView heralds decade of securing City

A software security expert is celebrating a decade of protecting the City of London 10 years after its iconic video recording and management software was first installed.

Jay Patel, founder of the SharpView system, first installed the Multi-MegaPixel CCTV solution at CityPoint, 1 Ropemaker Street in November 2006. This is recognised as the worlds first deployment of multi-megapixel cameras in a live CCTV application.

Unusually, CityPoints SharpView system captured protesters dressed as Batman and Spiderman heading to a Fathers 4 Justice protest on 19 October 2007.

CityPoint was the first building in the City of London to exceed the height of St Paul's Cathedral when it was built in 1967 as a 122m 35-storey headquarters for British Petroleum.

SharpView was further developed into a full-blown VMS platform when chief executive officer Patel and Francisco Feijoo restructured the company and formed EyeLynx Limited in July 2012.

Since then, current generations of EyeLynx systems have gone in to The Shard and The Broadgate Tower to provide City buildings with state-of-the-art CCTV and video analytics in response to a continuing severe threat level from international terrorism.

EyeLynx is now part of the integrated perimeter protection group Zaun, with offices in Chessington, Surrey, and Zaragoza in Spain. Built-in capabilities for video content analysis and integration of numerous detection technologies including RADAR mean that SharpView remains the highest performance HD, MegaPixel CCTV recording and management system in the security industry.

Patel said: While construction and other markets have been subdued for much of the 10 years since we created SharpView, terrorism and other threats have driven the demand for ever more innovative security measures, which has enabled us to keep ahead, stay busy and grow.

EyeLynx recently launched the EPR-100 and EPR-500 RADARs to enhance security protection at large sites. The management software works seamlessly within SharpView to allow the autonomous control of PTZ cameras, thereby cutting annual critical infrastructure security budgets dramatically by reducing the reliance on human patrols and manned guards.

The RADARs detect moving objects in any weather conditions, even at night, up to 500m away, with minimal false alarms. SharpView provides early warnings to security staff and allows them to verify potential threats of intruders on protected sites, such as public utility sites, military bases, national borders, solar farms, airports and large campuses.

Wolverhampton pioneers new boost in burial plots

Stylish steel fencing has been installed around a new Staffordshire cemetery, the first in a number to provide much-needed additional burial plots nationwide.

Mesh fencing manufacturer Zaun Ltd has supplied 180m of its Gemini convex fencing, installed by fellow Wolverhampton business Steelway Fensecure around the new cemetery in nearby Essington.

West Midlands headquartered plc Respects Bereavement Services is developing a number of cemeteries across the country to provide additional burial space to the general public.

Group CEO Christian Hipkiss said: “The Essington multi-faith cemetery will eventually provide 20,000 burial plots in 26 acres for the mixed religious communities who are currently struggling to find suitable provision.”

Zaun Gemini, the fencing chosen, comes in four curved toppings – wave, convex, concave and surf – on top of Duo6 or Duo8 twin wire mesh fencing. Steelway advised the customer that convex would be the best option due to the sloping nature of the site.

Steelway’s Steve Taylor said: “The convex topping gives a more aesthetic finish to this sensitive site. We’re hoping to move onto successive cemeteries across the country with Respects Bereavement Services to provide this essential growth in available burial plots.”

Miles of mesh in Middle East desert

Miles of mesh now crosses a Middle Eastern desert, a year on from the winning of a multi-million pound contract by steel fencing manufacturer Zaun.

Zaun created a new flat-panel mesh security fence for the contract and is manufacturing, shipping and installing 80km of it in the Middle Eastern desert.

The new HiSec Plus panels are a variant of Zauns original 358 welded mesh configuration with an extra wire every 250mm on the inside to enhance security and with the V-panel eradicated to remove a potential climbing aid.

The 80km worth fill a staggering 200 40ft containers that the British manufacturer is shipping to secure a site of critical national infrastructure.

The design department has offset the additional 4mm wires setting quite a challenge to the production team to enhance the security characteristics and make the single panel act almost like a dual skin fence.

Zaun research and development manager Adam Christie says: Its brilliant to see this new system in situ in the desert as its been more than five years in the design, making, shipping and installing.

The customer had a very clear specification of what they wanted, but weve been able to work with them over time to make enhancements and to reassure them at every step of the way on quality, design, production, sourcing and logistics.

The additional horizontal wires of HiSec Plus remove the natural bowing of traditional 358, while the 2.4m-high fence line is further secured with stainless steel razor coil topping and coated barbed wire as line wires.

The panels are bolted to 5mm-thick cold-rolled steel posts sourced from Austria, which are being welded to steel base plates at Zaun by a new robot welder bought specifically for the task, with each post and base plate a massive 75kg in dead weight.

The rolled steel is folded back on the front attack-prone flange of the post to create an effective 10mm thickness of steel. The post assemblies are then bolted in the field to a continuous concrete beam.

The enhanced HiSec specification and fencing system cements Zauns ability to deliver bespoke high-security fencing solutions.

HiSec is endemic throughout UK prisons due to its tight mesh formation and the fact it can go to 5.2m in height in a single panel.

It can easily be integrated with different toppings, as in this case, and with CCTV, PIDs and other electronic security enhancements.

Brand new Buckinghamshire school caters for RAF cadets

A £12 million new-build school in Buckinghamshire that accommodates the needs of the academys cadet force has opened its doors for the first time.

Sir Thomas Fremantle School in Winslow is now home to 400 students within the Year 7 to Year 11 age groups after students and staff spent the first four years of the schools life in a temporary building at the Winslow Centre.

The school will welcome more students in September when its new sixth form unit opens.

Head teacher Darren Lyon said he had received very positive feedback from students since the new building opened. He said: We have five science laboratories, a food technology room and a performance hall.

We also have a four-court sports hall, a miniature 3G football pitch, tennis and netball courts and a dance studio.

Other additional facilities are more classrooms, a café and dedicated lecture spaces and storage for the schools RAF Combined Cadet Force.

Kier Construction built the new 5,320 sq m building, designed by van Heyningen & Haward Architects, that cost £12 million from the Education & Skills Funding Agency.

Prestige Civil and Sports won the contract for all groundworks, drainage, floor slab and services plus a type 3 MUGA (multi-use games area) sports pitch.

Sports fencing manufacturer Zaun Limited supplied 3m high Duo8 Sports fencing for the combined tennis and netball court and 4.8m high Super Rebound panels for the MUGA, which includes integral floodlight posts to maximise usage.

The design maximises accessibility to amenities for community use as well as providing exemplary teaching facilities, particularly in the areas of sport and ICT.

It is focused around a welcoming central entrance foyer, creating a vibrant hub giving access to performance and sports facilities for the school and local community.

Zaun accredits installers to roll out unique ArmaWeave

High security perimeter systems manufacturer Zaun Limited is bolstering the ranks of approved installers for its unique super-intruder-resistant fencing.

ArmaWeave fencing which is unique to Zaun is produced on the worlds largest steel loom at the companys West Midlands manufacturing base.

Crime & Fire Defence Systems engineers were trained in the installation of the product and have installed kilometres of the high-security woven fencing at utilities sites across the country over the last two years.

Now Zaun has formally accredited Crime & Fire as approved installers of the product, along with Zaun Group subsidiary Binns Fencing.

Zaun has established the new installer scheme because of increasing requests from customers to recommend contractors with suitable installation, quality and safety standards.

ArmaWeave has some unique properties which give it distinct advantages but require some fresh skills and techniques to install. For example, unlike welded mesh the panels can rake up and down hills so the installers require new skills to square up or rake the panels.

The wire of the panels has a tensile strength typically more than double welded panels so special methods are required for cutting the panels during installation.

Zaun will be training installation teams on the properties and tolerances of ArmaWeave and how it is manufactured. It is aimed exclusively at fencers with proven skills and experience in high security fencing work and deals only with the specific new skills and techniques required to install ArmaWeave.

Trainers will share the secrets of installation methods Zaun has developed over time for ArmaWeave to make best use of the properties of the high security fabric.

The training will be for experienced individuals sponsored by a company which can demonstrate its professionalism through membership of a relevant trade organisation and valid UKAS accredited ISO9001 certification. The certificate of training will only be valid while the individual is working for the host company. This will ensure properly trained individuals working under proper quality management install the product.

The plan is to increase the adoption of ArmaWeave as the standard for secure sites of Critical National Infrastructure such as utilities, data centres and nuclear sites while ensuring consistent installation quality.

Zaun sales and marketing director Chris Plimley said: 'We invested in the steel loom ahead of the sales in the belief we could produce an innovative product installers, specifiers and high security facility managers would want.

Innovative Apex weldless railings land at Luton Airport

Following an intriguing recent collaboration, London Luton Airport (LLA) is the first site to install weldless railings from the new partnership.

Steel fencing and railing manufacturer Zaun has teamed up with Top Security Fencing to fabricate and market its innovative patented Apex weldless railing system.

Luton Airport has surrounded the perimeter of its hangar area with about 600m of Diamond-to-View Apex railings up to 3m in height, though railing sections sitting atop breeze block walls are just 1.8m high.

Zaun has also supplied two pairs of double gates and two emergency escape gates.

Zaun made the railings in its state-of-the-art factory in Wolverhampton, though it has enhanced the special tool that locks the vertical tubes into the horizontal rail frame to make it even quicker for factory operatives to assemble.

Zauns new tube laser cutter is ideal for providing the neat clean holes in the horizontal rails through which the vertical tubes are dropped then expanded with the special tool.

The collaboration gives Zaun an excellent value railing option to compete with other tubular railing systems.

Apex solid panel railings can incorporate round or square vertical pales with solid joints to the horizontal rails and concealed connections between posts and panels, giving clean lines with no visible fixings. A raking panel is in development.

Apex railing panels are supplied galvanised with the option of an Elite PR1 formula guaranteed polyester resin single coat in a choice of over 50 colours while for more aggressive environments, the Elite EPR dual coating system is recommended.

Luton Airport is one of the UKs largest airports and carried 12.3 million passengers in 2015, an increase of 16.9% on 2014.

LLA is currently undergoing a significant transformation through a £110 million investment by its operator: a consortium between AENA and Ardian, the former being the worlds leading airport operator.

The development is the biggest in the airports 78-year history and will increase annual capacity by 50% to 18 million by 2020.

Thames Water chambers topped with super-secure turrets

Raised chambers housing flow gauges for London's new multi-million pound super sewer have been secured with intruder-resistant turret tops.

Thames Water's extension to the Lee Tunnel was opened earlier this year by Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson before he departed his former role as London Mayor.

The 4.3 mile-long £678 million project took four years to build and was designed to stop sewage flushing into the River Thames and River Lee.

Perimeter security expert Zaun had already secured the access points to the tunnel extension with its most intruder-resistant product, ArmaWeave, installed by Zaun subsidiary Binns Fencing.

Zaun designed two bespoke cages from ArmaWeave with special fixings and topped with 980 razor coil to protect the flow gauge chambers.

On average 39 million tonnes of untreated sewage mixed with rain water gets discharged into the River Thames from overloaded treatment works and combined sewer outfalls every year.

The biggest of these outfalls, at Abbey Mills pumping station, has been discharging 16 million tonnes of sewage per year to the River Lee.

The £678 million Lee Tunnel the largest single project in the history of the privatised water industry in England and Wales, and the deepest ever bored under London at 75 metres deep will capture this sewage to keep it out of the River Lee.

The Lee Tunnel connects the Abbey Mills Water Treatment Centre to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works, Europe's largest such site, both if which are also secured by Zaun perimeter protection.

The Thames Tideway Tunnel will connect to the Lee Tunnel and will capture sewage from the remaining 34 combined sewer overflows, keeping it out of the River Thames.

Hampshire special secondary school gets basketball court

A basketball court at a Hampshire special school is up and running after a £4.4m project of remodelling and refurbishment.

The main works were completed in August by W Stirland, a privately-owned construction company near Chichester.

They involved the conversion and extension of the existing Victorian school building at Linden Education Centre in Aldershot, creating teaching accommodation for 92 secondary age pupils who are unable to attend main stream school because of emotional or behavioural reasons

Farnham-based PRO Fencing, the fencing division of WL West & Sons Ltd, installed the basketball court using 3m-high Duo8 steel fencing from Zaun Ltd, with matching 1.2m-high spectator railings to one side.

Duo8 forms a robust play area that is highly durable, low maintenance and graffiti-proof, and rubber inserts between panels and posts to keep rattle during play to a minimum.

Linden Education Centre caters for students aged 1116 whose behavioural problems have resulted in them being permanently excluded from a mainstream school, or who are in danger of being excluded.

The aim is to re-integrate students aged 1114 into a mainstream school. Older students, especially those in Year 11, invariably complete their education at the centre before moving on to further education.

Prison drone pioneers introduce Government to perimeter savings

The integrated security team behind a British prisons pioneering war against drones is to share its innovative and cost-saving approach with the UK Government.

Les Nicolles Prison on Guernsey became the first in the world to use a new system designed to stop drones smuggling drugs, weapons and other contraband over perimeter walls.

A group of four collaborating British companies styling itself as The Perimeter Security Centre of Excellence (PSCoE) installed the comprehensive perimeter protection package, including the new Sky Fence technology.

Now PSCoE (stand Z35) is exhibiting at the official UK Government global security event, Security & Policing 2018, which takes place from 6 to 8 March at Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre.

The unique three-day event, established over 30 years ago, is the premier platform for UK suppliers to showcase the very latest equipment, training and support, to police services, Government departments, organisations and agencies from the UK and overseas.

Binns Fencing, the leading fencing contractor for the Ministry of Justice, led the Guernsey project for the conglomerate, which offers the simplicity and efficiencies of a single line of communication and management from cradle to grave of high-security perimeters.

Eclipse Digital Solutions is the second of the collaborators. It created Sky Fence with fellow British company Drone Defence and offers full turnkey security design through to installation.

Eclipses Joe Vasso said: Our proposition is all about seamless integration to offer the most cost-effective high-end security for perimeters whether that be along a border, around a prison, airport or the Olympic Games, or even airborne above ground, on roofs and the like.

The beauty of our conglomerate is that our relationships have been formed over years and were all friends, so the trust is absolute and we care about each other.

The other two members are Harper Chalice, an intrusion detection company providing PIDs, electric fencing and RADAR detection, and ISM, which offers integrated security systems, PSIM software and intercom security systems.

Together, they believe the UK Government could make significant savings by adopting its proposed model for delivering perimeter security and PIDs procurement and delivery.

Their single point of contact for the complete perimeter security package provides greater opportunity for innovation, reduced complexity and no need to manage multiple contractors.

PSCoE believes this could offer significant cost savings on PIDs cable installation and contract and project management costs as with Les Nicolles, where the States of Guernsey that runs the prison saved £1.3 million.

States Deputy Mary Lowe said: The committee decided, following discussions with key staff, that it was possible to continue housing Category B prisoners at Les Nicolles without the installation, at significant expense, of a second fence.

While the second fence is advised under UK guidelines for Category B prisons, the committee is comfortable that the current technological upgrade offers security that enables Guernsey to continue housing Category B prisoners.

Sending such prisoners off island to serve their sentence comes at a significant cost of approximately £50,000 per year each. The committee decided that these upgrades, which will cost £1.3m less than a second fence, offered a Guernsey-appropriate solution.

Binns MD Adam Binns said: We have devised this model in consultation with the Government, main contractors and suppliers, to deliver best value and a greater potential to innovate with a single point of contact throughout procurement, delivery and installation.

The model will give them trusted advice on design, manufacturing and installation from exclusively British companies with British products from electronic systems of CCTV, detection, video management and access control to physical security fencing, gates and hostile vehicle mitigation.

ArmaWeave achieves steepest rake yet

Accredited ArmaWeave installer Crime and Fire Defence Systems carried out the installation at a high security site, where the fence climbed a 50m-long 25° slope using full width panels.

Zaun owner and co-founder Alastair Henman said: “The raking powers are such a big benefit over 358 and could help protect so many high security sites.”

Manufacturer Zaun developed the raking installation method to make best use of the properties of the high security fabric, which is the most intruder resistant fence on the high security market.

The ArmaWeave fencing – which is unique to Zaun, as is the ability to rake it – is produced on the world’s largest mesh weaving machine at the company’s West Midlands manufacturing base.

Henman added: "We had to invest in the weaving machine ahead of the sales in the belief we could produce an innovative product installers, specifiers and high security facility managers would want."

It limits the need for stepping panels on slopes and reduces installation costs significantly compared with standard welded mesh systems, while still conforming to the highest rated standards for fencing products defending against forcible attack.

Zaun renews with Secured by Design

Wolverhampton integrated perimeter, security and event overlay fencing specialist Zaun Limited is the latest company to renew its membership with Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.

Made in the Midlands member Zaun is a private British company founded in 1996, and with regional offices in France and Dubai. Zaun offers a complete service from initial site survey through to manufacture in the UK and distribution globally to a host of countries. Both their standard and bespoke systems are high quality and are used by corporate, residential and local authority sectors.

The UK's largest water and waste company, Thames Water Utilities, has recently awarded two multi-million-pound perimeter protection contracts to Zaun. The first contract is for the design of perimeter protection for seven sites and the second contract is to supply and install around 11km of perimeter protection for four of the seven sites.

Zaun will supply its SBD accredited ArmaWeave woven mesh fencing system around the perimeters and various compounds and buildings. ArmaWeave – which is unique to Zaun – is one of Zaun’s most intruder-resistant products and is produced on the world’s largest mesh weaving machine at the company’s West Midlands manufacturing base.

SBD is part of Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (PCPI), a police owned organisation that works on behalf of the Police Service to deliver a wide range of crime prevention and demand reduction initiatives across the UK.PCPI is a not-for-profit organisation and board members include senior police officers from each of the four Home Nations who control and direct the work PCPI carries out on behalf of the Police Service.

SBD plays a significant crime prevention role in the planning process to design out crime in a wide range of building sectors. It has achieved some significant success including one million homes built to SBD standards with reductions in crime of up to 87%.

SBD has many partner organisations, ranging from the Home Office, Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government and the Police Service through to local authorities, housing associations, developers and manufacturers and work closely with standards and certification bodies to ensure that their publicly available standards actually meet the needs of the police and public alike.

Products must be subject to rigorous testing and additionally be fully certificated by an independent, third-party certification body accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) before being allowed to carry the SBD logo - this is the only way for companies to obtain police accreditation for security-related products in the UK.

Commonwealth Games springboard for future fencing gold

A champion Olympic fencer from Wolverhampton is champing at the bit for the opportunities afforded by the 2022 Commonwealth Games coming to Birmingham in three years.

High security fencing manufacturer Zaun Ltd supplied 23km of permanent fencing for various stadia at the London 2012 Olympics.

And Zaun then secured the Athletes Village, Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Celtic Park, Hampden Park, Toryglen, Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls and the SECC at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Small wonder therefore that they are so excited about the Games coming to the Midlands next time out.

Owner, director and co-founder Alastair Henman says: “The feedback we got from the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee, Police Scotland and the Home Office was very positive, and all were pleased with the security at the Games.

“So, we are hoping to capitalise on that, our London Olympics experience and a host of keynote political summits to secure more major events in the future.“

Innovation was the key to winning the initial Olympic work, thinking about the project in a different way using technical capabilities of existing machines to highlight potential savings.

Back in 2008, Zaun was an unknown in major events security and simply registered for two opportunities on the portal competefor.com, which has become an ongoing service used in the supply chain since its successful introduction for the London 2012 Games.

But that has all changed, as Henman explains: “The 2014 Commonwealth Games followed, with just a simple introduction letter and a follow-up call to the organising committee, who gave us details of who we should be speaking to.

“We now had a reputation for innovation, quality and delivery at the greatest show on earth, which was a passport to all sorts of other work.”

Zaun developed its PAS 68 MultiFence especially to resist hostile vehicle and mob attacks at the London 2012 Olympics. The UK Intellectual Property Office has since granted Zaun a patent for it.

Other innovations for the Olympics were many and varied: some flood gates, designed to allow debris and water flow in case of a storm or flooding, with the bottom part of the fencing containing movable panels that could be opened; what became dubbed the Obama Gates, bulletproof gates for VIPs to the Olympic Stadium, protecting them as they entered and left the stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies; bespoke fence-mounted working platforms so contractors could install kilometres of fencing toppings safely when plant access was restricted; and 4-metre high solid archery hoardings mounted on concrete vehicle barriers to protect spectators from being shot with arrows at Lord’s!

Zaun also created a method for removing CCTV post tops after the Games, negating the need for more than 600 unnecessary duplicate columns every 25m for 17km, with CCTV bases poured on site as the time frame was too short for the bases to be cast off site in time, spawning a new product line for Zaun.

The two Games alone brought Zaun £35m of contracts over six or seven years. But it was the introduction to all manner of other contracts that was the real prize.

Contracts as diverse as Edinburgh Castle, the G8 Summit in Northern Ireland, Fastlane nuclear naval base, the NATO Summit in Wales, Wimbledon, Calais, Windsor Castle, London’s New Year’s Eve celebrations and most recently US President Donald Trump’s State visit to the UK.

As Lindsey Flynn, Board Member for the Black Country LEP, puts it: “With the London 2012 Olympics I saw first-hand how an event like this can impact and deliver a real catalyst for both individual businesses such as Zaun, but also for a whole area. In 2012 the Black Country was one of the most successful areas in terms of contract wins and the Commonwealth Games brings another unique chance for businesses willing to take that opportunity. Birmingham 2022 could be the catalyst to drive transformational change across the Black Country for regeneration, innovation and sustainable inclusive growth.

Zaun is actively pursuing opportunities with the 2022 Commonwealth Games and continues to look to a packed programme of world sporting spectaculars and major political and state occasions to provide its integrated high-security perimeter event overlay services.

Henman says: “I spent four years of my life delivering our largest ever contract for the London 2012 Olympics. It was a fantastic time for us, and it opened up so many doors and opportunities.

“But a contract of that magnitude cannot be expected every year and the company needs to be founded on solid repeatable business. The spectaculars are great for show, but don't necessarily bring home the dough, month after month, year after year.

“Now we are focused on using the credibility and success of London 2012 and the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games to secure long term sustainable customers.

So, Henman has set about boosting capacity, maximising efficiencies and rebalancing the mix of business. He wants to put the business in a position to deliver the exceptional projects without compromising the sustainable business, through investment in the latest technology and operating methods.

The focus is therefore on manufacturing. Firstly, there was a multi-million-pound investment in the 44,000 sq ft Paul Holloway Manufacturing Facilitybuilt in the grip of the recession which gives Zaun a total of nearly 100,000 sq ft of manufacturing space in two factories either side of a central storage yard.

Zaun to make Apex railings

An intriguing collaboration has brought steel fencing and railing manufacturer Zaun together with Top Security Fencings innovative railless system.

Zaun is to manufacture the patented Apex weldless railing system in its state-of-the-art factory and market it in partnership with Top Security.

Zauns new tube laser cutter is ideal for providing the neat clean holes in the horizontal rails through which the vertical tubes are dropped then expanded with a special tool to lock them into the frame. A new development of the system allows the horizontal panels, which are typically 2 or 2.4m high, to be raked.

The collaboration gives Zaun a good value railing option in direct competition with Barbican railings from Jacksons Fencing.

Apex railings can incorporate round or square vertical pales with solid joints to the horizontal rails and concealed connections between posts and panels, giving clean lines with no visible fixings. Alternatively, a solid panel option is available.

Original temporary electric fence now deploys even faster

The original anti-vehicle rapid-deploy temporary electric fence system – first used in tandem on the London 2012 Olympics – is now even quicker and easier to roll out with a pre-configured ‘ends’ to pulse-protected ‘zones’.

Three leading names in perimeter security have collaborated to incorporate the new temporary electric fence technology into the established SecureGuard HVM rapid-deploy barrier fencing system.

Electric and electronic fencing expert Harper Chalice Group Limited has developed RapidPulse, a pre-configured ‘start’ and ‘stop’ to each pulse-monitored ‘zone’, to allow rapid deployment of its PulseSecure system.

Steel fencing manufacturer Zaun Limited has created special pairs of posts for the anchor point fencing panels, with crossed bracing bars to bear the load of the electric cabling.

The system can be supplied with any of Zaun’s existing fencing panels – including HiSec, HiSec Super 6 or ArmaWeave – all deployed super-fast with no foundations on top of SecureGuard HVM barriers from Highway Care Security.

Trial installations have seen Harper Chalice, Highway Care Security and Zaun deploy 30m of HVM barriers and fencing with perimeter intrusion detection in just one hour.

“This is set to revolutionise the market for temporary high security utilities, roadworks and construction compounds without the need for any civil or ground works,” says Zaun sales and marketing director Chris Plimley.

The partners first proved the concept at the London 2012 Games, at which they secured various sections of the Olympic Park perimeter with temporary HVM barriers and fencing combined with PulseSecure.

The RapidPulse innovation now makes it possible to install perimeters temporarily, break them down, then redeploy them in a fraction of the time, making secure but mobile compounds a reality as works progress during a project.

Harper Chalice MD Chris Hackett says: “The overall system provides a psychological barrier as well as a physical deterrent.

“And it offers a fantastic solution for ongoing security when a breach in a permanent perimeter is required temporarily for repair, maintenance or upgrade, without reducing the overall protection of the site.”

The system is fully compliant with BS 1722 Part 14 and Part 17 and can be supplied either galvanised or polyester powder-coated with all components manufactured in the UK.

Each post and panel can also be supplied up to 3.5 metres total in height, while pedestrian and vehicle gates can also be incorporated, as can CCTVcolumns, turnstiles and access portals.

The system is ideal for using around high security temporary utilities and construction sites, to protect road works or at major events that might be at risk of protests, riots or terrorist activity.

SecureGuard with RapidPulse provides protection against vehicle attack, pedestrian intrusion and rock fall and debris dispersion.

The barrier is available to rent or to buy.

SecureGuard was developed specifically for the G8 Summit in Northern Ireland and has since been deployed at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the NATO Conference in South Wales and the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague.

It forms part of the National Barrier Asset and has been used to secure the main political parties’ party conferences over recent years.

SecureGuard is a mobile high security range of products from Highway Care all tested to PAS68:2010 to withstand multiple attacks by a 7.5 tonne truck at speeds of 20, 30 and 50mph without them breaching a security perimeter.

Thames Water secures site in anglers' haven

An operational Thames Water site that sits among East London's anglers has had its security upgraded with no downtime.

The two compounds at Walthamstow Reservoir have been fitted with security fencing from Thames Water perimeter protection partner Zaun.

Zaun has supplied its most intruder-resistant product around the main compound. ArmaWeaves unique properties add substantial resistance to cutting attacks with hand, powered and non-contact tools. The tight mesh pattern provides no climbing aids, again limiting the potential for intrusion.

While Zaun Group installer Binns Fencing had to hand dig around a mass of cables and conduits and invent a novel way of cladding the back of the palisade fencing on the smaller compound with its HiSec mesh.

Radar-controlled CCTV heralds guardless site security

A state-of-the-art radar detector that controls CCTV autonomously could cut annual critical infrastructure security budgets dramatically by reducing the reliance on human patrols and manned guards.

Software security expert EyeLynx, a part of the integrated perimeter protection group Zaun, has launched the EPR-100 radar to detect moving objects in full 360°, up to 500m away across flat terrain, with minimal false alarms.

Integrated into SharpView video management software, it will automatically control Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) cameras that follow movements tracked by the radar to monitor, detect and early warn security managers of intruders on protected sites, such as utility stations, military bases, national borders, solar farms and large homes.

The EPR-100 radar with SharpView detects, tracks and records moving objects, such as people and transport, in high resolution, even at night, making it ideal for airport perimeter intruder detection, railway trackside public safety and building site security and asset protection.

The solid state digital beam radar operates in the licence-free 2.4GHz band with very low output power and poses no radiation hazard. EPR-100 is ideal for use in large outdoor spaces in any weather condition and under poor visibility.

The unit has an automated self-test mechanism and easy to use web-based control interface. Video can be monitored for instant verification in full HD1080p and recorded for evidential purposes.

Chief executive officer Jay Patel says: Even at night, weve installed this at sites where it has followed a train travelling at 60mph, panned back to pick up people, then locked onto vehicles entering and leaving the gated car park. The system relieves the burden on security guards having to monitor and control multiple CCTV cameras when several alarms are received across a large site.

Safeplay helps Zaun break new Norwegian turf

Norwegian artificial turf experts have turned to a British steel fencing manufacturer to support their move into installing MUGAs (multi-use games areas).

Safeplay of Torvastad in Rogaland county has become Zaun Limiteds reseller in Norway after it won the order to install a MUGA at a new upper secondary school in Bremnes.

Bremnes is a small town of 4,500 inhabitants on the west coast of Norway due west of the capital Oslo. The town has a strong culture for sports and especially football one in 4.5 inhabitants is a member of the local sports club and has fostered several top-level players despite its small size.

The MUGA is 24x12m and incorporates specialist sports fencing with basketball over-panels at either end.

Rooftop MUGA maximises space at West Bromwich UTC

A university technical college with a rooftop games area has embarked on its second academic year in operation.

Health Futures University Technical College (HFUTC) in Sandwell is on such a tight town centre site in West Bromwich that architects designed the MUGA on top of one of the college rooves.

That made the specification of effective perimeter fencing more critical to avoid the constant escape of balls from the playing surface down onto the ground far below.

This was installed by Dawn Fencing Limited of Leigh, which has been going more than 30 years and is the only fencing contractor dedicated solely to sports.

They chose 4m-high Duo8 SuperRebound twin horizontal wire fencing panels from Zaun, which are highly durable, low maintenance, graffiti-proof and offer great rebound properties similar to a wall.

The court includes six integral floodlight posts in the fence line and one pair of double leaf gates and three single gates.

HFUTC offers educational experiences and opportunities to 14-19 year olds from across the Sandwell borough in a unique partnership with the University of Wolverhampton, West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, Co-operative Pharmacy and 21 partner employers in health, education and the public sector.

BAM Construction built the £9 million 5,390 sq m building, its 16th UTC. It contains four storeys of learning space for 600 pupils, including laboratories, a visualisation suite, a hospital teaching ward and the rooftop MUGA.

A tenth of the buildings energy come from renewables, with photovoltaic cells used for solar power.

Allens accreditation means three approved to install ArmaWeave

A third company has been accredited to install ArmaWeave, an approved high-security perimeter fencing system manufactured by Zaun.

Expert installers Allen Fencing Limited, part of the Allens Group, have committed to training their site operatives in the installation methods for ArmaWeave developed by Zaun over time to make best use of its unique high-security woven fabric.

Impressed with the versatility of the system, Allen Fencing Limited are now installing the Zaun mesh on several security sites.

With their new accreditation, Allen Fencing Limited now brings the number of approved installers of ArmaWeave up to three, alongside systems integrator Crime & Fire Defence Systems and premier prison fencing installer Binns Fencing, a Zaun subsidiary.

Zaun has established the new scheme after increasing requests from customers to recommend contractors with suitable installation, quality and safety standards.

Zaun joins RIBA-approved CPD network

Steel fencing manufacturer Zaun Limited will be educating architects on integrated perimeter systems after becoming a RIBA-approved CPD provider.

Zaun will be delivering the RIBA-assessed seminar Perimeter and Integrated Systems, The Trusted Advisor and giving factory and demo area visits at its Wolverhampton head office to help architects fulfil their annual CPD requirements.

Zaun joins the RIBA CPD Providers Network, which consists of over 500 manufacturers and suppliers who provide RIBA-approved CPD to architects and other specifiers.

The network partners deliver free RIBA-assessed CPD face-to-face in architects practices or on factory tours, at RIBA CPD roadshows or online.

CPD is mandatory for RIBA Chartered Architects, and having RIBA approved CPD material available as seminar presentations, articles, videos, factory tours and in other formats is a good way to open doors to start building key relationships.

Basildon pitch and gym encourage the next Max Whitlock

Basildon sport has received a shot in the arm following the opening of a near £1m scheme at Everyone Active’s Eversley Leisure Centre.

Witham-based ETC Sports Surfaces has installed new 3G football pitches and floodlights for 11-, nine-, seven- and five-a-side football, while contractor Morgan Sindall focused on the centre’s internal development.

The sports hall has been transformed into a state-of-the-art gym to add to the Basildon Sporting Village base of South Essex Gymnastics Club (SEGC) that has turned out star members, including Max Whitlock, Amy Tinkler and Brinn Bevan.

Basildon Council has invested £570,000 in the first outdoor all-weather pitch in Pitsea, combined with £230,000 from SEGC and £123,900 from the Veolia Pitsea Marshes Maintenance Trust.

The full size 3G football pitch allows play all year round and provides players with the look and feel of natural turf and all the benefits of a hardwearing, weather and stud-resistant surface.

ETC worked alongside Zaun Ltd, who manufactured and supplied its Duo8 Super Rebound sports fencing system and gates to surround the pitch.

Zaun flushes out 'super sewer' security scheme

The official opening of London's new multi-million pound super sewer has triggered the installation of high security perimeter protection for its main access points.

Former Mayor of London Boris Johnson opened Thames Water's extension to the Lee Tunnel by flushing a toilet in an underground ceremony, declaring the £678 million project 'an amazing achievement for British engineering'.

The 4.3 mile-long Lee Tunnel extension took four years to build and is designed to stop sewage flushing into the River Thames and River Lee. It will be followed by the construction of an even larger sewer, the Thames Tideway Tunnel, later this year.

Johnson said: "It is expensive and I understand people's concerns about that but in the end the real cost, it seems to me, is the cost to our city, to the environment, of not doing it. The Victorians were very ambitious our generation should be similarly ambitious.

This amazing new super sewer is providing the bold infrastructure needed to support the movements of our rapidly growing city. For years our historic Victorian systems have heaved at the seams, muddling along, battling to cope with the increasing rainfall and waste of a modern population.

Now the River Thames will benefit from vast improvements to its water quality with less pollution and overflow.

The access points are being secured by perimeter security expert Zaun, with its most intruder-resistant product, ArmaWeave, with double leaf gates.

It is being installed by Zaun subsidiary Binns Fencing, who are working with main contractor MVB, a joint venture comprising Morgan Sindall, VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Bachy Soletanche.

On average 39 million tonnes of untreated sewage mixed with rain water gets discharged into the River Thames from overloaded treatment works and combined sewer outfalls every year.

The biggest of these outfalls, at Abbey Mills pumping station, has been discharging 16 million tonnes of sewage per year to the River Lee.

The Lee Tunnel connects the Abbey Mills Water Treatment Centre to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works, Europe's largest such site, both if which are also secured by Zaun perimeter protection.

The Thames Tideway Tunnel will connect to the Lee Tunnel and will capture sewage from the remaining 34 combined sewer overflows, keeping it out of the River Thames.

RDS innovations make it even more flexible

Two new innovations have made the premier rapid-deploy perimeter protection system even quicker to install.

Steel fencing manufacturer Zaun Limited has designed a new QuickFit post system for its multi award-winning Rapid Deployment System (RDS), that was first created for political conferences and forms part of the National Barrier Asset.

And they have pre-assembled a ‘plug & play’ variant of perimeter intrusion detection experts Harper Chalice’s FenceSecure to offer a speedily-installed temporary HVM and detection fencing system.

RDS has been the firm favourite with police for securing party conferences since it saved up to 90% of police time and proved its rapid-install-with-high-security credentials during a whistle-stop tour from Brighton to Birmingham via Manchester for the three main UK political parties’ autumn conferences in 2012 and at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland in May 2013.

The new QuickFit post system halves the manpower for installation, with a team of two able to install a 30m run in just half an hour in trials.

Opposing wedge-shape protrusions on the posts and clamp bar serve as a pincer system to clamp the fence panels to the posts. They are locked in place with a single bolt fixing per post with the head of the bolt completely encapsulated inside a tube so it cannot be removed. Zaun’s research and development team has created a video to demonstrate the innovation.

Harper Chalice’s RapidSecure plug & play PID system is the rapid deployable version of FenceSecure, an approved solution for high security and government applications that has been deployed successfully on many high-profile projects.

RapidSecure takes that same technology and proven performance and allows it to be utilised on a rapid deployable fence.

It detects intruders cutting and climbing the fence fabric to provide early warning of attempted breach of the perimeter and quick organisation of the relevant response.

When integrated with CCTV the solution can provide complete protection and monitoring of a secure boundary reducing the need for security patrols and allowing more centralised or focused response teams.

The overall flexibility and simplicity of installation means that the system can be operational and providing protection against intrusion very quickly. It also makes for easy moving and redeployment, making it perfect for temporary construction or road works that require a high-security solution.

RDS has won a number of security innovation awards, including the Security Innovation Award and the Counter Terror Expo Excellence Awards for Best Physical Security Innovation.

Son returns to Zaun to dad’s old role

An experienced steel fencing industry salesman has returned to his first proper employer – to take on the same role his dad held for many years.

Zaun has appointed Andy Holloway as internal sales manager. The mesh fencing manufacturer previously employed his dad Paul for 10 years until his untimely death from a hospital-borne infection in October 2012.

In tribute, Zaun named their second factory in Wolverhampton the Paul Holloway Manufacturing Facility and also called one of their vertical railings products the Holloway Railings.

Andy first worked for Zaun 15 years ago for two and a half years before spending the past dozen at competitor IAE in Stoke.

He said: “It’s great to return to Zaun for this opportunity. My goal is to get Zaun as renowned for and synonymous with standard mesh and railing systems as it is for high security fencing.

“So, we have big plans for ensuring more products are available straight from stock and for being competitive on price across our entire range.”

Andy is just one of four recent new starters to beef up the Zaun sales function alongside sales estimators Tom Bennett and father and son Dave and Tommy Calvin together with design and production engineer Shane Rowton.

Zaun launches barcode railings

Steel fencing pioneer Zaun has introduced barcode railings into its range for corporate marketing messages or innovative learning experiences for students.

Zaun has developed the inventive barcode railing system from its standard vertical bar railing range to offer architects and specifiers the creative option of delivering messages when the fencing is scanned.

Mobile phones and tablets can reveal the embedded coded messages contained within the railings while the solution can also be included into swing and sliding gates.

Marketing manager Steve Roberts said: 'We see the barcode railing as a fun and ingenious form of differentiation within a practical solution to securing perimeters or demarcating different property areas.

'We can see schools liking the idea of making their learning environment more appealing. And it will work just as well for quirky company branding and residential areas that want to name their developments in a different way.'

Zaun already offers colour fencing and railings, through visibility, incorporation of logos or lettering and laser cut steel figures so architects can make their perimeter solutions truly unique.

'Cat gates' give bilingual school personalised entrance

Britain's first bilingual school in English and German has capped its major refurbishment programme to increase capacity with bespoke entrance gates spelling out the school's name and sporting a cat.

Judith Kerr Primary School in Herne Hill appointed Morgan Sindall to provide two reception classrooms, additional teaching space, a new assembly hall, cafeteria, and catering facilities and to improve pedestrian and vehicular access.

The school occupies the former James Black Institute, which was previously the plant science department of Kings College London. It converted part of the building to open three years ago and is now up to capacity of 350 children following the latest work.

Rochester contractor MGS Kent asked steel fencing and gates manufacturer Zaun to create bespoke 2m-high double leaf 'cat gates' with lettering in to install within the existing fence line.

Zaun's in-house research and development department produced bespoke designs and used the company's innovative laser cutter to produce the letters and cat outline.

The school is named after its patron, a German turned Brit, renowned childrens author Judith Kerr OBE, who penned The Tiger Who Came to Tea, her first picture book, and the Mog series about the Thomas family cat and the strange things she gets up to.

Kerr was born in Berlin, but came to England with her family when she was 12 after escaping the Nazis and travelling through Switzerland and France as a young girl. She wrote about her early life in her autobiographical trilogy Out of the Hitler Time.

She is 93, has sold over nine million books and lives in Barnes, South London, with her latest cat, Katinka hence the bespoke 'cat gate' tribute.

New rubber barrier and steel fence HVM system creates Impakt

Two pioneers of perimeter protection have joined forces to launch the latest in mobile hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM).

Rosehill Security and Zaun Limited have combined the ultimate in rubber HVM barriers with fence panels developed for the London 2012 Olympics, to produce a crash-rated fencing and barrier system that can be deployed rapidly.

The ImpaktFence is a unique integrated IWA14 crash-rated fencing and vehicle security barrier (VSB) HVM perimeter security system developed in collaboration between Rosehill Security and Zaun.

The surface-mounted ImpaktFence system can be rapidly deployed for temporary or permanent security, as a part of an overall HVM strategy to protect people, buildings and infrastructure from hostile vehicle attacks.

Kirstie Emptage, Rosehill Securitys business manager, said: The ImpaktFence is so robust and versatile that it can be installed almost anywhere in minutes, removed and used again and again.

The barrier is constructed from solid 1m cubed rubber blocks, which at 430kg each, weigh one third of similar concrete VSBs, adding to the ease and speed of deployment.

Blocks are connected by steel securing cables which can be anchored to create a stronger barrier providing the flexibility to protect both entrance areas and site perimeters against hostile vehicle attack.

The innovative shape with its large footprint has been specifically designed to block vehicles. The ImpaktFence barrier has been successfully impact-tested to IWA 14-1 specification, stopping a 7.2 tonne N2A lorry travelling at 30mph (48kph).

The IWA14 rating specifies the essential impact performance requirement for a VSB and a test method for rating its performance when subjected to a single impact by a test vehicle not driven by a human being.

The 100%-recycled rubber blocks incorporate integrated 80mm x 40mm steel fence posts, which provide additional rigidity and support.

The posts, at 2060mm centres, hold Zauns HiSec anti-climb mesh, providing an ultra-secure perimeter while CCTV, anti-intrusion detection and fence toppings can also be incorporated into the installation.

Zaun rocks on first Gibraltar order

British steel fencing manufacturer Zaun is celebrating a first order to Gibraltar to surround a new play park for military families.

Zaun supplied 350m of its Bow Top railings and five single gates totalling about six tonnes for the Four Corners play park, commissioned by the Government of Gibraltar and built by the Gibraltar Joinery & Building Services for the MoD base on the peninsula.

The order was placed by Colomendy Ltd, a UK company with more than 90 years experience in export procurement worldwide and keeping supply chains moving.

The British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar is a rocky headland on the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, a strategic location at the western entrance to the Mediterranean, where the straits between Europe and Africa are only 14km wide.

Gibraltar covers just over two square miles including the Rock of Gibraltar, at the foot of which is a densely populated city area of 30,000 residents.

The British Army has had a presence in Gibraltar for more than 300 years. The people of Gibraltar took up arms as the Gibraltar Volunteer Corps from 1915-1920 and again as the Gibraltar Defence Force shortly before the outbreak of World War II. This force later became the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, which remains as the only formed Army unit in Gibraltar.

In 1991 the last UK-based infantry battalion left Gibraltar, which is now used primarily by the British as a training area and a stopover for aircraft and ships en route to and from deployments East of Suez or Africa.

Colchester autism school unveils new MUGA

A new multi-sports pitch for children with autism has gone down a storm at its official opening at an Essex special school.

The MUGA at Doucecroft School in Colchester was opened last month after supporters raised the £60,000 target to install the pitch.

Doucecroft School is a specialist co-educational school for children and young people with autism and additional complex needs, aged 3-19 years. Doucecroft has successfully nurtured students with wide-ranging strengths and needs, and enabled them to grow in independence and self-esteem since founding nearly 40 years ago.

The school is part of Autism Anglia, a charity that provides a range of services across East Anglia to enable children, young people and adults with autism to live as independently as possible and experience choice and inclusion in society.

Doucecroft appointed Sportsafe, an international provider of sports equipment installation, service and maintenance whose head office is in Colchester, to work with the management team to plan, design and deliver a bespoke MUGA for the children to enjoy all year round.

Sportsafe turned to Suffolk contractor MTA Leisure for the fencing, who specified steel fencing manufacturer Zauns 3m-high Duo8 Super Rebound twin horizontal wire panels, which are highly durable, low maintenance, graffiti-proof and offer great rebound properties similar to a wall.

The new MUGA was put through its paces at the opening ceremony in a number of football matches between Doucecroft and another SEN partner school nearby.

White Christmas appointment boosts Zaun sales function further

A pioneering high security perimeters manufacturer has recruited a new business development manager to join in January.

Steel fencing manufacturer Zaun Ltd has appointed Mat White from Highway Care Security Solutions.

Zaun boasts a long-standing working relationship with White extending back over many years.

For the past five years, he has been at Highway Care, initially as project manager on security and major highways contracts and more recently as commercial manager and director for H2S2, a joint venture business between Highway Care and Hill & Smith business Hardstaff Barriers.

White said: “I’m really excited to be joining the Zaun team and can’t wait to get my teeth stuck into my new role, while strengthening long term customer relationships and opening new doors to help create a sustainable future for the business.

“Zaun is picking up momentum thanks to the high-quality products it manufactures and the dedicated and enthusiastic team that represent the business.”

Prior to Highway Care, White spent 12 years at Hardstaff, starting out as a plant operator and quickly progressing through the ranks to site supervisor and then operations manager overseeing highways and security projects.

As the UK terrorist threat increased, he project managed the design, program and deployment of security measures utilising the National Barrier Asset (NBA) for high-profile events including the Nuclear Security Summit in Holland, Champions League Final, G8 and NATO conferences.

Securing success from Olympic springboard

Two Midlands security businesses are preparing to celebrate their greatest day in history tomorrow, exactly four years on from the opening of the London 2012 Olympics.

On 27 July 2012, Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the 2012 Olympic Games after apparently surviving a death-defying skydive with James Bond actor Daniel Craig as part of Oscar winning director Danny Boyle's Isles of Wonder opening ceremony.

Wolverhampton's Zaun and Coventry-based Harper Chalice cite their largest ever contracts as the springboard to the growth and success they now enjoy.

They helped make the 30th Olympiad the biggest security operation post-war Britain had ever mounted at a cost of £553 million and involving 10,000 police officers, 13,500 armed forces personnel more than Britain had deployed in Afghanistan at that time and 70,000 Games Maker volunteers.

London 2012 was widely regarded a triumph. It was the first Olympics where every participating country included female athletes; it enjoyed packed stadia and smooth organisation; and the focus on sporting legacy and post-games venue sustainability was seen as a blueprint for future Olympics, including Rio 2016 that opens in nine days' time.

'Legacy' and ongoing community benefit was probably the key factor on which London secured the Games back in 2005 in the face of fierce competition from favourite Paris.

London delivered that in spades, along with a boost to the economy and a genuine nationwide feelgood factor that arguably helped turn a faltering post-credit crunch recovery into sustained aconomic growth.

The regeneration of east London has been spectacular. Though many argue about whether the 2012 Games sparked a long-term sustained greater participation in sports and improved fitness levels to combat the obesity epidemic.

The world-class sporting facilities are also part of the legacy, but perhaps less obvious are the ongoing contracts for British manufacturers and service providers, as enjoyed by Harper Chalice and Zaun, among others.

Harper Chalice general manager and director Chris Hackett says: "As part of the pre-award process we had to install our systems alongside our competitors for trial and testing by the Government Security Services.

"But the prize for winning was huge 26 kilometres of PIDs and electric fencing at over 400 zones around the Olympic Park, that has formed the basis of the TriSecure complete perimeter protection system that we now provide today alongside Zaun to high-security utilities sites and others."

Certainly, Zaun's Games legacy as the principal 2012 Olympics fencer keeps running and running.

It has returned to the Olympic Stadium on several occasions, first decommissioning after the 2012 Paralympics, then reconfiguring and removing security fencing for last autumn's Rugby World Cup and most recently to prepare it as the new home of West Ham United Football Club and a national competition centre for British Athletics.

The transformation included installing the largest roof if its kind in the world, a community track, innovative retractable seating, spectator and hospitality facilities and external landscaping.

But the London legacy is about much more than just sporting venues. Zaun has also provided fencing around the ArcelorMittal Orbit, the transformation of the 275m-long Olympic media complex into iCITY and innovative 'green' acoustic fencing panels for the Chobham Academy on the former Athletes' Village site.

SharpView from EyeLynx secures solar farms

Smart cameras and video analytics are being used to protect solar farms across the UK.

Intelligent SharpView CCTV systems from EyeLynx have provided perimeter protection within budget and time constraints at several locations across the country.

EyeLynx's Pharos all-in-one Rapid Deployment Wireless cameras with slave cameras have been installed around the perimeters to provide 24/7 site security and asset protection.

Pharos units record full HD1080p video and tracks potential intrusions on site using iLIDS approved advanced video analytics. The sites are monitored from a Remote Video Receiving Centre (RVRC) where trained operators can respond to events on site and make audio challenges where necessary using IMMIX software.

Intruder alarms are relayed to the RVRC through Pharos over broadband connection that, depending on the location, can be either satellite, 3G or wired DSL. Audio challenges from the security personel are output to horn speakers via the Pharos units.

More than two weeks of HD CCTV is captured and can be reviewed instantly at any time and from any client PC or security officer's smart phone running SharpView.

Solar farms are being created to harvest energy from the sun a clean, renewable source of electricity that produces enough energy every hour to power the world for an entire year.

Renewables will play an increasingly important role in the global energy mix as electricity prices rise along with the demand for energy while the need to protect the environment becomes ever more urgent.

Zaun buys EyeLynx IPR and assets

Zaun Limited has acquired all the intellectual property rights (IPR) and assets of EyeLynx Limited after the voluntary liquidation of its former subsidiary.

Zaun will continue the business under the trading name of Zaun Technology, which will be part of the multi-award-winning perimeter protection systems Zaun Group.

The EyeLynx range of security software services and products including its iconic SharpView CCTV solutions and much-vaunted EPR-500 radar will be part of the Zaun brand product line under this new approach.

The core technical team behind the product and support remain unchanged under Francisco Feijoo, but fellow co-founder and former CEO Jay Patel is no longer part of the business.

Zaun Technology has taken on all support contracts and product warranties for EyeLynx customers under the deal.

Zaun co-founder and director Alastair Henman said: Customers in the perimeter security industry will benefit from a more holistic solution, driven by innovation. We wish Jay the best of the luck with his new endeavours.

Zaun had been steadily integrating the business since acquiring it three and a half years ago and the approach to the market through channel partners Eclipse Digital Solutions, Harper Chalice and Tensor will continue.

While the quality of its CCTV has been praised by The Metropolitan Police, the radar is currently attracting most customer interest.

Feijoo created a mobile pack fitted with its EPR-500 radar and all-in-one Pharos PTZ camera on top of a tripod to demonstrate instantly to security managers that it can identify predatory vehicles at up to 700m and drones at 80 metres.

The EPR-500 radar with SharpView detects, tracks and records moving objects in a 120° field of view, such as people and transport, in high resolution, even at night, making it ideal for airport perimeter intruder detection, railway trackside public safety and building site security and asset protection.

Main contractor Allston Construction appointed steel fencing manufacturer Zaun to supply and install its Bushberry railings and gates.

Zaun had to manufacture bespoke panel sizes and plasma cut fencing parts to go round corners, as well as vertical infill bars on gates to precisely complement the kerbside appeal of the apartments.

Sports pitches take shape at new £330m Northampton campus

A £330m state-of-the-art university is taking shape in Northampton, ready to open in 2018 with a floodlit all-weather pitch and three Multi-Use Games Areas for use by the community as well as students.

Northamptonshire civil engineering firm Prestige Civil & Sports has begun construction of the sports pitches at Northampton University's Waterside Campus using Zaun sports fencing.

The floodlit all-weather pitch measuring 108m by 71m is already complete, with 4.8m-high fencing for ball retention, Duo8 Sports Rebound to the bottom 3m and floodlight posts incorporated into the fencing.

Duo8 Super Rebound forms a robust play area that is highly durable, low maintenance and graffiti-proof, with great rebound properties similar to a wall and rubber inserts between panels and posts to keep rattle during play to a minimum.

The new university will transform a 58-acre brownfield site along the River Nene into a vibrant cultural and social attraction, drawing in students and visitors from across the county and further afield.

Work on site began in 2015 and is now close to completion the new campus opens its doors in September 2018 with community focus at the heart of the design.

This includes commercial space, a hotel, leisure space and sustainable links to the town. A Grade II listed engine shed on the south of the campus has been converted into the home of the Students Union and its sports, societies and services.

A multi-use sports dome for netball, badminton, volleyball and basketball two sports performance labs and teaching spaces are also part of the development.

Sports are offered free to all students Northampton is one of only two universities in the country to offer this.

Fawns give Gorse Hall kids more inspirational play

A primary school in Greater Manchester is enjoying improved break and lunch play and sports activities since installing a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA).

Gorse Hall Primary School in Stalybridge wanted to increase the space available for the children at break and lunch times as well as offering the school sports teams a place to train in all weathers all year round.

They commissioned Farnborough-based Fawns Recreational Services Ltd to install the MUGA. Fawns, which supplies inspirational play for parks, schools & nurseries, turned to sports fencing expert Zaun for the MUGA fencing.

The MUGA incorporates Zaun's Duo Sports twin wire sport fencing range, with 'Super Rebound', a tighter 50mm x 66.6mm mesh pattern that offers a quieter and more attractive alternative to standard wooden rebound boards, along the sides of the pitch and the lower 1.2 metres of the ends, which also incorporate recessed goals.

Zaun fencing first at Vancouver psychiatric hospital

A psychiatric hospital in Vancouver, Canada, has been upgraded with British security fencing without impinging on the ongoing operation of the facility.

British Columbia fencing installer Streamline Fencing Ltd has installed a total of 300m of British steel mesh manufacturer Zaun Ltd’s HiSec 358 fencing to secure the 190-bed Colony Farms Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Vancouver.

They worked successfully alongside customised facilities manager BGIS and British Columbia Mental Health Services (BCMHS) to navigate around out of bounds areas during certain periods.

The hospital treats and rehabilitates people who have crossed the law and are deemed unfit to stand trial or not criminally responsible due to mental illness.

In doing so, Streamline has created a safe and secure hospital that is aesthetically pleasing to the patients and staff within and to the community beyond with anti-climb fencing that provides full through-visibility.

This is the first time a HiSec 358 style secure mesh has been used in Vancouver, Canada, which also facilitated bespoke installation in areas of the hospital.

The fencing was 4m high and incorporated barbed wire topping to provide additional security along with special clamp bars and fixings. It is the first time Zaun fencing has been used in Canada.

BCMHS are so delighted with the result that they are looking at using a similar product on another hospital on Vancouver Island – while Streamline are in discussions to become the accredited distributor for Zaun in North America.

British prison pioneers war against drones

A Channel Island prison has become the first in the world to use a new system designed to stop drones smuggling drugs, weapons and other contraband over perimeter walls.

A group of British companies has collaborated to install a comprehensive perimeter protection package at Les Nicolles Prison on Guernsey, including the new Sky Fence technology.

It creates a 600m shield around the prison to detect remote-controlled drones then uses a series of disruptors sensors to jam the drones computer to block its frequency and control protocols and divert it back to where it came from.

Drones have become a major security problem in Britains prisons and are increasingly used to smuggle in drugs, weapons, phones and other valuables.

Les Nicolles has ordered around 20 disruptors on the perimeter fence line and within the jail.

Sky Fence is the creation of British companies Drone Defence and Eclipse Digital Solutions, while steel fencing manufacturer Zaun and Coventry-based PIDs business Harper Chalice have also supplied product installed by the UKs premier prison perimeters installer Binns Fencing.

Prisoner governor David Matthews said: This is the first time this technology has been used in any prison anywhere in the world. I would like to see it adopted in other UK prisons because it has become a significant problem. This is about prevention.

Nottingham-based company Drone Defence has worked on the idea in the past year.

Founder and CEO Richard Gill said: It disrupts the control network between the flyer and the drone.

The drone then activates return to home mode and it will then fly back to the position where it had signal with its flyer.

Someone described it as the final piece in a prisons security puzzle. I think it could have a significant worldwide impact.

Eclipse managing director Alan Drinkwater said they had modified existing technology to create Sky Fence.

The new system in Guernsey is part of a £1.7 million security upgrade that also includes new cameras, new fencing and sensors, a new lighting system and new alarms.

A multi-use games area for prisoners has also been set out within the walls.

Les Nicolles is a mixed category prison which holds both men and women, young offenders and adults, and has a capacity of just 139. It opened in 1989 and its population has fallen to an all-time low in recent years.

It is independent of the mainland prison and justice system and is run by the State of Guernsey.

Demountable fencing secures EDF underground gas chambers

Demountable fencing to secure huge underground gas storage chambers has been created for an EDF Energy site in Cheshire.

Perimeter systems manufacturer Zaun Limited has supplied more than 500 metres of 2.4m-high Duo8 steel mesh fencing panels to the energy giant.

The site near Crewe incorporates 11 huge gas storage chambers 200 metres underground, each of which can store around 36 million therms. One therm is the equivalent to 30 kilowatt hours of energy (kWh).

Zaun provides security fencing extensively across the utilities sector and for other sites of critical national infrastructure.

Duo8 is a twin-wire fencing panel featuring two 8mm horizontal wires that sandwich 6mm vertical wires, which provides a good-looking perimeter that is strong and rigid enough to secure a site from potential trespassers, vandals and thieves.

Each panel is manufactured with a 50mm x 200mm, ideal for use with CCTV camera systems as the open mesh aperture provides excellent through visibility.

Siddiqui heads over fence to Zaun in Middle East

High security fencing manufacturer Zaun has poached a Middle East fencing expert from regional rival Betafence.

Aamir Siddiqui has joined Zaun as Head of Sales for Middle East and North Africa, alongside Jeremy Knight, who continues as Head of Operations for the region.

It is quite a coup for Zaun, which has been steadily progressing its strategic move into the Middle East.

It recently announced a massive Middle Eastern contract with Kuwait Oil Company that will see the British manufacturer ship a staggering 200 40ft containers of HiSec Plus, a new flat-panel mesh security fence Zaun has designed for the purpose as a variant of its original 358 welded mesh configuration, HiSec.

Designers have added an extra wire every 250mm on the inside to enhance security and eradicated the V-panel to remove a potential climbing aid.

Siddiqui started his career in the region in 1999 with Chainlink Industries Kuwait, representing Betafence, who coaxed him across to work for the export director in 2004.

Zaun first set up an office in the UAE in the Emirates Tower in Dubai in 2012.

It has delivered prestigious pilot contracts with Petroleum Development Oman worth almost £1.5 million, electric fencing at a military base in Abu Dhabi and is receiving enquiries from Iran, Iraq, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Gas network turns to prison style security

One of the UK's largest gas distributors has specified prison-style double skin steel mesh and special fence toppings to secure its gas distribution network across the north of England.

They have turned to the Zaun group and its HiSec DualSkin and Flexible Steel Topping (FST) products.

The distributor delivers gas to 2.7 million homes and businesses and around 6.7 million individuals in the North East, Northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire through a vast network of 37,000km of gas pipes enough to stretch from Leeds to Sydney, Australia and back again!

During periods of peak demand, the network transports four times as much energy as the electricity networks to large cities such as Newcastle, Sunderland, Leeds, York, Hull and Bradford and beautiful rural areas including North Yorkshire and Cumbria.

Zauns HiSec DualSkin has been specifically designed for sites that need a more secure solution and features two layers of the traditional HiSec 358 welded mesh with 76.2mm x 12.7mm open mesh sections.

These double skin 358 panels are welded together with the secondary panel turned 90 degrees to make a very tight 12.7mm x 12.7mm mesh configuration, which is difficult to cut and almost impossible to climb.

Pioneering perimeter systems manufacturer Zaun has entered into a previously-untapped market for the Wolverhampton-based business by introducing Palisade fencing to its extensive product portfolio.

The facility in Wolverhampton now boasts the most modern Palisade rolling line in the UK, which runs 24 hours a day.

Zaun sales and marketing director Chris Plimley said: “This is a really big leap for us as we’ve not previously ventured into the Palisade market. We believe that adding this to our product range will give the industry the most comprehensive steel product line available from a single manufacturer by having welded, woven and Palisade manufacturing capabilities.”

Palisade fencing panels have long been a popular choice for securing a whole variety of high-security sites from gas, water and electricity facilities to industrial and public sector compounds.

They provide good levels of security and vandal resistance, are difficult to climb and can be very robust.

Zaun’s Palisade panels are 2.75m wide and come in heights from 1.8m to 3.6m as standard, with different pale head styles including single point and triple point, while rounded and notched heads are favoured for schools and playgrounds.

The pales, in either D or a more secure W section, are fixed to two horizontal rails running between fence posts at 2.75m centres.

The system allows for raking to follow the topography of the site without any compromise in security or system rigidity and with no time consuming or costly on-site modifications.

Fence installers can quickly and easily fix rails to posts using custom anti-tamper fixings and follow the most demanding site gradients.

The systems come with a user-specified finish and are manufactured to the required BS1722 part 12, while the hot dip galvanising conforms to BS EN ISO1461 to give long term weather resistance, prior to polyester powder coating to BS EN 13438:2013.

Zaun manufactures its Palisade systems to a range of thicknesses from 2mm to 4mm. It can also supply bolt-down posts for fixing to concrete and matching Palisade gates.

Zaun’s own headquarters in Wolverhampton were secured with Palisade fencing until recently, when they replaced it with their own high-security weldless mesh panels after developing an ingenious method of fixing to steel Palisade fencing posts and rails.

So long as the existing Palisade posts were installed to British Standard 1722, they are sufficient to support the ArmaWeave upgrade as the wind loading is almost identical.

Plimley concluded: “Our plant now has arguably the best palisade rolling line in the UK. Couple this with us maintaining differing combinations of stock, we should be able to deliver quality product quicker than anyone else in the market.”

Zaun pushes CPD to specifiers

Steel fencing manufacturer Zaun Limited is increasing its efforts to educate security consultants, specifiers and architects in the latest technologies available to design into buildings, venues and public spaces to protect the public.

In just four months, experts from Zaun will be delivering both Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Security Institute approved Continual Professional Development (CPD) workshops from London to the North East to half a dozen different audiences, culminating in early December at the International Security Expo at Kensington Olympia.

Zaun director and co-founder Alastair Henman has long argued that the security industry requires greater conformity, rigour and collaboration among independent testing and accreditation bodies – and that any penetration tests accurately vet systems in real life scenarios.

It favours the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) Red Book and its SR security ratings to LPS 1175, which many specifiers are rightly now insisting upon.

But Zaun also gains product approvals with the likes of Secured by Design (SBD), the Perimeter Security Suppliers’ Association (PSSA), PAS 68 and IWA 14 and, of course, the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI).

Henman says: “So we’re now intent on propagating this message to specifiers, designers, security consultants, architects and anyone involved in determining the security that will protect their staff, customers and the public for years to come.”

The sessions are designed for security professionals who are determined to keep their learning going throughout their careers and upgrading their knowledge with the latest thinking on security – and operate on the classic CPD points system.

The topics fit under the general theme of protecting business or organisational assets using technology and span from perimeter protection and detection and information on the SR Security Ratings and SBD and CPNI standards.

A growing area is education in Hostile Vehicle Mitigation measures in response to the alarming trend for terrorists to use the vehicle as a weapon to target unsuspecting and innocent members of the public.

Two years ago, Zaun joined the RIBA CPD Providers Network, which consists of over 500 manufacturers and suppliers who provide RIBA-approved CPD to architects and other specifiers.

In an Architects Journal survey of the top 120 architectural practices, 84% said they use RIBA-approved CPD and 66% of respondents had attended a face-to-face seminar with a RIBA CPD Providers Network member.

The network partners deliver free RIBA-assessed CPD face-to-face in architects’ practices or on factory tours, at RIBA CPD roadshows or online.

Approved seminars are worth double points to RIBA Chartered Architects.

Zaun must keep the seminar material up-to-date and advise RIBA when it changes any content to conform to current legislation, guidelines or user needs.

The RIBA promotes the material on its architecture.com website, through its assessed material list and via monthly CPD Showcase e-marketing campaigns.

Shard owners ramp up security after Greenpeace stunt

Specialist CCTV with intruder detection systems were installed at the tallest building in the European Union after protesters climbed to the summit.

Six Greenpeace activists, all of them women, scaled the iconic Shard in London and unfurled a flag with "Save the Arctic" on it to protest against plans to drill in the Arctic by the oil company Shell.

The Prime Minister of Qatar, Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, inaugurated the 95-storey 310m building on 6 July 2012 in a ceremony attended by HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, officially opened the View from the Shard viewing platform on 1 February 2013.

But following the Greenpeace stunt on 11 July 2013, the management company for the owners Sellar Property Group and the State of Qatar decided to enhance the security system with the latest state of the art CCTV.

They appointed installer Unique Security, and together evaluated leading products on the market. SharpView from EyeLynx was selected on the basis of performance, quality and its focus on reliability. EyeLynxs rapid deployment system, Pharos, was installed together with wireless PIRs from Luminite to further secure the perimeter and the main escalators to London Bridge station.

Facing continued problems with the installed Lenel product for the main CCTV, Zaun Group company EyeLynx provided a back up SharpView NVR for critical cameras in time for a Royal visit from Her Majesty the Queen and HRH Prince Phillip in November 2013.

This unit worked seamlessly with the installed Pharos cameras using EyeLynxs SharpView VMS and demonstrated to the management team how the security could be drastically improved by recording in High Definition quality and retaining video for at least 30 days for all the buildings CCTV cameras.

The complete CCTV system was subsequently changed over to SharpView in January 2014, with over 200 cameras recording to ten SharpView Corporate NVRs incorporating over 200TB of storage, while four SharpView Manager Workstations allow the security team to manage and control the entire security system, on desktop monitors and a 16ft video wall in the control room.

Zaun develops ‘world first’ 20-minute security fence

A key customer requirement has driven a steel mesh fencing manufacturer to a probable world-beating performance in security tests.

A development fencing system based on Zaun Ltd’s CorruSec resisted serious attempts at forced entry for over 20 minutes with tools including reciprocating saws and angle grinders in independent tests by Buildings Research Establishment (BRE) assessors.

“We believe this may be a world record for a fencing system,” said Zaun founder and director Alastair Henman on returning from the test.

Independent testers from BRE mounted a sustained attack on the Zaun development fence, loosely based on an SR5 ‘serious attempt at forced entry’.

They used top end battery power cutting tools including an awesome 750W reciprocating saw with specialist blades used by fire and rescue teams and 18V circular saws, jigsaws and disk grinders, axes including an 850mm felling axe, a hooligan bar, 1.5kg lump hammer and 500mm long bolt cutters.

They were trying to create a ‘man-sized’ 600mm square hole in the fence line – larger than the 450mm x 225mm that is part of the SR5 test.

Henman said: “Even with this astonishing arsenal, testers took more than 20 minutes to create this larger breach. The fence, which uses a clever combination of materials and geometry to maximise resistance, needed to survive for only 10 minutes to pass the client’s test.”

CorruSec variants had already achieved official SR3 and SR4 ratings.

Zaun helps secure landmark Nigeria tower with SR2 mesh PAS68 gates

A landmark mixed-use development in Nigeria has been secured by the latest British perimeter technology.

Crash-tested bi-folding speed gates with inlaid SR security-rated mesh panels have been installed at Nestoil Tower on Victoria island, Lagos, along with crash-tested bollards and blockers.

Cova Security Gates from Crawley creators of the worlds first crash-tested speed gate won the contract to supply and install from leading Nigerian construction company Julius Berger.

The prestigious Nestoil Tower is a 15-storey mixed-use development consisting of 7,500 sq m of office space, 3,500 sq m of residential space, a multi-storey parking facility as well as a recreational facility and houses Julius Bergers new corporate head office.

The building form was created using gentle curved surfaces of high performance glass with horizontal tubular details which accentuate the sweeping effect of the curved façade. The arced curtain walls are further defined by a surround of solid white metal panels to complete the contemporary composition of this building.

Cova were tasked to provide secure vehicle and pedestrian access and to protect access from the gatehouse for staff entrances and exits at different areas and around the main building.

Cova supplied five crash-tested trackless bi-folding speed gates, one standard bi-folding gate, five rising arm barriers, four crash-rated bollards, a crash-tested shallow depth road blocker, a full-height double turnstile and a push button access control system that controlled the entire turnkey project.

The gates were clad with steel fencing manufacturer Zauns SR2-rated Super10 steel mesh to add to the security of the gates.

Covas design team manufactured each product bespoke to the clients specific requirements for the project, because of the weight and material of the mesh, to ensure PAS68 test standards were fully met and foundation requirements, speed of opening and closing and power control were all as specified.

All gates and turnstiles were finished in Signal White to blend in with the design of the tower and the fence line.

Cova filled three 40ft containers for shipping to Nigeria with all products tested prior to leaving the factory as part of its ISO9001 process and by Julius Berger-appointed auditors.

Installation was arduous and fraught with difficulties, but once completed, a Cova engineer provided full training to the Nestoil Tower security team on how to operate the gates, blockers, barriers and turnstile on a daily basis so that they could correctly implement protection in the event of a terrorist vehicle attack.

Zaun prison posts land at Wrexham super prison

The first MoJ approved prison posts have rolled off the production line at Zaun and been delivered to the new £250m super prison at Wrexham.

Zaun Group companies were appointed to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) approved supplier and installer list of fencing materials at the end of 2015.

Binns Fencing and Zaun Limited, who became sister companies earlier in 2015, are working together on the Category C closed prison with a small remand function that will open next year and hold 2,106 adult male offenders.

Binns won the contract to supply and install large stretches of prison-standard secure perimeter fencing on the former Firestone site on Wrexham Industrial Estate, working alongside main contractor Lend Lease.

The £212m construction will provide good quality prison accommodation that reduces the cost per prisoner place. Once operational it will further boost the regional economy by around £23 million a year and create up to 1,000 jobs.

At Wrexham, the Government will adopt a new approach of public, voluntary and private sector collaboration to run the prison. Her Majestys Prison Service will take overall ownership and outsource 34% of service provision including a large industrial workshop complex.

The MoJ concluded its selection process before Christmas for companies to be appointed to its framework contract for the supply of fencing materials, including financial audits and sample installations for inspection and testing by MoJ personnel.

Zaun was appointed to the framework as an approved supplier of permanent and temporary galvanised steel fence posts and welded steel fence mesh, while Binns was certified as an approved installer.

The approvals apply to MoJ prison fencing throughout the UK, including Northern Ireland.

Zaun co-founder and director Alastair Henman said: 'It's a really proud moment seeing the first steel prison fence posts off our production lines. And the control we can exercise from design, through manufacture and supply to installation of fencing systems, gives us the confidence we can win more work like Wrexham.

On 9 November 2015, then Chancellor George Osborne and then Justice Secretary Michael Gove unveiled a major new prison reform programme including plans to build nine new prisons, with five of them due to open before May 2020.

Archer joins Zaun design team

Mesh fencing manufacturer Zaun has appointed a new designer to its ranks.

Frank Archer from Wolverhampton has joined the design team, reporting in to research and development manager Adam Christie.

He joins following stints in 3D design and e-commerce at an exhibition set and shop designer for furniture businesses, such as Duresta and Kesterport, and building an eBay store for aftermarket car parts business Energized Customs.

Archer initially studied aerospace engineering at the University of Bristol with the plan of joining the RAF, but a diagnosis of colour blindness prevented him becoming a pilot. He switched to a BSc in CAD and construction at Wolverhampton University.

Christie said: Were delighted to have Frank on board at a time when we are developing ever more secure fencing systems and the business is growing with massive new orders.

Zaun looks to next level after securing ISO certification

Zaun's production and customer processes have been certified to ISO9001:2008 with the manufacturer intent on seeking the 2015 standard in two years' time.

Quality control and heath & safety manager Dave Sayers, who has driven continuous improvement at Zaun, has a raft of developments to put in place for the new standard, with the emphasis more on people, training and the environment.

He says: This has to be driven from the top, so senior management have to be on board to ensure we embed a passion for quality and excellence throughout the organisation. We will therefore be including some transitional training for one or two senior managers.

Zaun has undertaken extensive work through its continuous improvement plan to understand its processes and how they interact and impact on each other.

It is now monitoring that all deliveries arrive right first time, which includes them being on time, in the right quantity and of optimum quality. It has also introduced KPIs for complaints handling and is so far performing pretty favourably.

Zaun says it will be adopting a more robust focus on its supply chain and will move from ProspectSoft to Uniplan to enable it to control stocks, pricing and vendor ratings better.

Sayers says the drive is not 'for the sake' of getting the certification, but is rather driven by customer demands.

He says: We needed a UVDB audit by Achilles on our quality, health and safety and environmental performance, both at our headquarters but also out on site, in order to extend our framework agreement with Thames Water and we achieved an excellent outcome of 94%.

BBC descends on Zaun for Election comment

The BBC has descended on Zaun for comment in the past few days as the country still seeks to come to terms with the results of the General Election.

The final few constituencies were still yet to declare when Radio 4 Today programme chief correspondent Matthew Price arrived before 7am on Friday to interview owner and founder Alastair Henman, fork life truck operator Matt Ellis and stores apprentice Jordan Hughes.

That broadcast went out at 9.35am as the programme sought to make sense of a hung Parliament and how long Theresa May might last at the helm of a minority Government.

And on Monday BBC Midlands Today arrived to capture footage of fencing systems in manufacture and conduct TV interviews.

Black Country correspondent Ben Godfrey put the questions to both Alastair and Jordan.

A short two-minute teaser went out at lunchtime on Monday with the main bulletin leading the half-hour slot at 6.30pm that evening.

Thames Water extends Zaun contract

The UKs largest water and waste company has renewed the appointment of security and perimeter fencing systems manufacturer Zaun to a multi million pound framework agreement for a further year to May 2017.

Thames Water Utilities retains the option to extend for a further two years to 2019 and the end of the current Asset Management Programme, AMP6.

Thames Water originally chose Zaun as one of four appointed contractors for their framework agreement for the supply and installation of security fencing & gates, and one of three for their ongoing maintenance.

It hoped to save almost £500,000 with the framework agreement, as well as the benefits of dedicated account management, certified and experienced perimeter protection designers, engineers and technicians, access to new and innovative products and robust management reporting linked to an exacting service level agreement.

Thames Water manages more than 4500 sites, the majority of them unmanned, that require security to protect the water supply to over 14 million people.

Accidental pollution, the safety hazard of sewage, the potential for theft and even mindless vandalism all mean site safety and security is paramount.

Zaun first proved its reputation with Thames Water during its multi-billion pound London Tideway improvements to create a cleaner healthier River Thames.

This entailed work on sites of Critical National Infratructure (CNI) near to the London 2012 Olympic Park at Stratford where Zaun also provided security fencing.

For AMP6, Thames Water set about a complete transformation of the way it delivers capital investment through a super alliance including MWH Global as programme manager that expects to carry out between £2bn and £3bn of work, with £200m alone for security, bringing its estate up to Defra standards and fully prepared for any security eventuality.

Thames Water has since turned often to Zaun to deliver full turnkey security solutions of integrated perimeter fencing, CCTV and access control systems.

Zaun has installed its most intruder-resistant product, ArmaWeave, around secure compounds.

Partner agreement formalises integrated solution

Two of the leading names in CCTV, electronic and electrified perimeter security have agreed a formal partnership to promote their integrated solution.

Harper Chalice has signed an agreement to become EyeLynx Limiteds first official channel partner, under which EyeLynx has completed a bi-directional integration of Harper Chalices electronic and electrified detection systems into its iconic SharpView video recording and management software.

Engineers at Harper Chalice, which recently converted to an employee-owned company, have been trained to operate the SharpView system and give training to the end user.

Harper Chalice MD Chris Hackett said: This is a really exciting opportunity for us as we embarked on our plan to more than double our turnover in five years.

The partnership will enable us and EyeLynx to offer corporates, governments, and other security-conscious organisations one integrated solution to manage security and safety risks effectively throughout their enterprises.

A multi-functional security safe mounted into the perimeter of sites of critical national infrastructure has been unveiled at Security & Counter Terror Expo 2017.

Turnkey security systems integrator Crime & Fire Defence Systems launched the Victrix Vault on fencing partner Zaun Limiteds stand at the two-day expo at Londons Kensington Olympia.

Crime & Fire created the innovative fence- or wall-mounted safe to meet specific customer requirements in the utilities sector.

The Victrix Vault and its housing frame can be mounted into a variety of fence materials, including Zauns ArmaWeave woven mesh, 358 prison mesh and palisade fencing. It can even be mounted into a brick wall.

Crime & Fire MD and founder Chris Laughton says: Unique customer requirements sometimes dictate that innovative design and manufacture is required to solve problems. That was exactly the case with this safe, which we have developed in direct response to challenges we faced at CNI sites we are working on.

The Victrix Vault has been designed to work with electric fencing running at the rear of the unit and along the fence line.

The safe has numerous security features built-in and is approved by the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure for use around sites of strategic importance in the UK.

Crime & Fire has worked with many of the UKs gas and electricity networks for many years to develop turnkey security solutions. Nottingham debuts huge lacrosse fence panels

Huge 8m high steel mesh panels have been created for the University of Nottingham by sports fencing manufacturer Zaun Limited.

The special lacrosse variant of Zauns popular Duo8 Sports fencing has been installed at Nottinghams Jubilee Campus by Dawn Fencing Limited.

Leigh-based Dawn Fencing has been going more than 30 years and is the only fencing contractor dedicated solely to sports.

The central 30m behind each goal end of the lacrosse field included three different panel specifications to suit play.

The bottom 3m comprised special lacrosse panels with dense 50x33mm mesh of 6mm vertical wires at 50mm centres and dual 8mm horizontal wires at 33mm centres.

From 3m to 6m in height, Dawn installed Zaun Super Rebound panels with 50x67mm centres, which are highly durable, low maintenance, graffiti-proof and offer great rebound properties similar to a wall.

And the top 2m used a 50x200mm mesh pattern purely for added ball retention and safety of passers-by using nearby university buildings.

The university fields six teams across mens and ladies in British Universities & Colleges Sport competitions with matches most weeks, and development teams entered in beginners' tournaments.

A mixed team also competes in a regional league and enjoys a tour to Liverpool.

Henman finally free to fly solo at Zaun

The long-running shareholders dispute between the co-founders of perimeter systems manufacturer Zaun Limited has been resolved.

The company has bought back Paul Painters shares with support from Lloyds Banking Group.

Remaining co-founder Alastair Henman is therefore the sole ultimate shareholder of Zaun, with Painter no longer connected at all with the company.

Henman said: The dispute has been a huge distraction over the last few years and I look forward to re-focusing my efforts on the massively exciting future we are building at Zaun.

Since Painter ceased to have any executive role in 2014, Henman has been ringing the changes, building a stronger team and laying the foundations for a sustainable and positive future.

He acquired a majority stake in software security expert EyeLynx Limited, where founders Jay Patel and Francisco Feijoo still run the business.

The following spring, Henman announced the purchase of 75% of the shares in Binns Fencing, with Adam Binns, grandson of founder John Binns, similarly remaining as MD and retaining his 25% shareholding. The acquisition has given Zaun a strong presence in the prison sector.

The fourth member of the Zaun Group, Zaun Middle East, goes from strength to strength and recently announced its largest ever Middle Eastern contract with 80km of fencing to be shipped in the coming year.

Henman said: I spent four years of my life delivering our largest ever contract for the London 2012 Olympics.

That was a fantastic time for us, it opened so many doors and opportunities, and insulated us against the credit crunch, recession and early years of austerity.

The challenge has been to turn those opportunities, which arose from the one-off lumpy project, into long term sustainable business. That has been achieved only on the back of innovation, bold investment and strengthening relationships with core contractor customers to ensure the steady flow of orders that kept the factory permanently busy.

Last year, Henman made three internal promotions to join him on the board Chris Plimley as Sales and Marketing Director, Chris Rowen as Operations Director and Roberto Garziera as Technical Director.

Henman concluded: The political, economic, social and technological environments have changed beyond recognition since we launched the business, but we continue to invest in the belief we can produce innovative products our customers want.

Thats kept us ahead of the curve and sees us now at the leanest, greenest and keenest point in our history, confidently ready to forge into the future. In 2017, Zaun expects to hit record consolidated turnover and profit.

Standards agencies give Zaun resounding bill of health

Production and customer processes at a leading steel fencing systems manufacturer have been through the mill of audits in recent weeks – by customers, the security ratings standards body and an international certification agency.

Firstly, Zaun’s processes have been re-certified to the 2015 standard of ISO9001 by Bureau Veritas. The 2015 standard puts more emphasis than its 2008 predecessor on stakeholder impacts and requires greater awareness of risks by the manufacturer.

Conversely, the scrutiny by the Loss Prevention Certification Board at the Buildings Research Establishment is entirely on the security performance of products in their actual installed state. Zaun’s SR product range has been re-accredited to SR4 to SR1 ratings.

But the acid test surely is when a customer with the need for Critical Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) gives you a ringing endorsement – which is exactly what one of Zaun’s largest and longest-standing CPNI clients has just done.

Fastline and Zaun collaborate

Two giants of the UK perimeter solutions market are joining forces. Fastline Holdings has taken a small shareholding in Zaun Ltd by investing and Fastline owner Mike Fellows has joined the Zaun board.

Zaun owner Alastair Henman said: “I am delighted that we managed to put this deal together after extensive negotiations and am excited to be welcoming Mike to the Zaun board.”

Fellows added: “There are tremendous synergies between the two businesses. Our combined resources and specialities will be without comparison in the UK – and possibly even anywhere in the world.

“We see this as only the start of the creation of a combined powerhouse in the UK and international fencing market. This is very much a case of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.”

Fastline and Zaun have agreed to extremely close collaboration including a combined sales effort, the sharing of specialist skills, combined procurement and stocking, maximising the use of space, significantly increased plant utilisation and improved productivity through the use of technology and scale.

Mike Fellows founded Fastline Steel Services Ltd, fencing manufacturers with particular strengths in palisade, railings and gates, based in 30,000 square feet of factory and office space in Strawberry Lane, Willenhall. They have a strong and dedicated team with additional regional offices in Liverpool and Bristol.

Fastline invested in plant two years ago to roll their own palisade system and now have probably the most efficient line in the UK.

Zaun specialises in woven and welded mesh fencing, manufacturing both types of panels in its 80,000 square feet of manufacturing in Wolverhampton, less than 15 minutes from Fastline.

Zaun benefits from a host of modern production equipment including robot welding, tube laser cutting and plasma cutting. It makes an extensive catalogue of security rated and crash rated fencing products and boasts extensive major project and export experience.

Martinique host to latest Zaun prison project

The Caribbean is the exotic location of Zauns latest prison job.

The high-security steel mesh manufacturer has supplied its prison-standard 358 fencing to secure the penitentiary center of Ducos on the island of Martinique.

The overseas department, with an area of 1,128 sq km, is one of the eighteen regions of France. The prison, administered by the French Ministry of Justice, was opened in 1996 and can house up to 969 prisoners.

Ducos is located 14 km from Fort-de-France in a town of 16 000 inhabitants, and includes much accommodation to allow families to stay together while prisoners serve their sentence.

Zaun shipped three gates, 582m of HiSec mesh panels to heights of 3m and 5m and fence posts, clamp bars and fixings to fencing contractor DIRICKX Groupe, an international specialist in perimeter protection.

Zaun is on the UK Ministry of Justice approved supplier and installer list of fencing materials and recently supplied the Wrexham super prison HMP Berwyn.

HiSec is endemic throughout UK prisons due to its tight mesh formation and the fact it can go to 5.2m in height in a single panel.

It can easily be integrated with different toppings, as in this case, and with CCTV, PIDs and other electronic security enhancements.

Electric fence first for UAE military base

The Crown Prince wanted an electric fence to protect a military base in Abu Dhabi.

Electric fencing can provide security and protection of perimeters around key strategic and infrastructure sites. The installation of an electric fence combined with a secure fencing system creates a very powerful psychological and physical barrier to overcome.

Electric fences offer high impact resistance and an effective deterrent to trespassers and intruders.

Smart video surveiliance enhances passenger safety on trains

An intelligent video surveillance system has been developed to improve passenger safety on public transport.

SharpView Rugged from technology developers EyeLynx, a part of Made in the Midlands member Zaun Group, has been approved to stringent EU environmental standards EN50121, 50155 and 61373 for use on rail carriages and emergency vehicles. Military grade units complying with MIL-STD-810 are available on request.

SharpView Rugged consists of SharpView Manager Professional security management software and the SVR-5716NR network video recorder, which is a rugged unit with 16 inputs enabled, eight of which are direct Power over Ethernet (PoE) for HD cameras and up to 4TB hard disk storage drives. Storage is also possible to external USB drives.

SharpView systems can record and manage multi-megapixel and HD video evidence from an unlimited number of CCTV cameras. Alarms are also recorded from other security devices, such as facial recognition, intruder and fire sensors.

Built on the latest Enterprise class Linux operating system, the SharpView recording engine delivers the fastest storage and retrieval performance in the industry. All units record network IP video of any resolution, frame rate and compression formats including; M-JPEG, MPEG-4 and H.264.

It supports a variety of digital I/O and devices connected over USB, Ethernet and RS 232/422/485. GPS tracking and wireless connectivity is also supported.

Tenby English-medium school fitted for 21st century

A brand new English-medium primary school in Tenby is approaching the end of its first year after being officially opened by the Cabinet Secretary for Education in the Welsh Assembly.

Kirsty Williams AM officially opened the new Tenby Church in Wales VC Primary School, which, with the new Welsh-medium Ysgol Hafan y Mor nearby, represent an £8.4 million investment in education in the town.

Both were built under the 21st Century Schools Programme in a collaboration between Pembrokeshire County Council and the Welsh Government, who are splitting the funding.

They replace the Tenby VC and Tenby Junior schools and cater for children aged between three and 11.

The Tenby Church in Wales school has 54 nursery and 252 reception to Year 6 pupils on roll, but can accommodate up to 380 under head teacher John Palmer.

The councils own in-house architect team designed the new state-of-the-art school, which was built by West Wales contractor Andrew Scott Ltd with fencing from Wolverhampton manufacturer Zaun Ltd, installed by Binns Fencing.

The school contains a Learning Resource Centre for specialist provision in the Tenby area and a spacious playground and school field to develop the strong traditions of sporting provision and achievement at Tenby.

Three new directors have joined the Board after internal promotions at high security and perimeter systems expert Zaun.

The promotions mean operations, technical and sales and marketing are now represented at board level at Zaun.

Chris Plimley has stepped up to Sales and Marketing Director. He has been at Zaun for the past eight years, most recently as Head of Sales, after joining from Betafence where he was Major Projects Team Leader.

Chris Rowen takes the role of Operations Director.. He is in his second stint at Zaun having rejoined the business in 2014 in a projects and production manager role, seven years after leaving as design manager.

The Technical Director position is filled by accomplished engineer Roberto Garziera, who joined Zaun almost two years ago.

His background is in machinery and industrial product design and he holds a number of patents on products and solutions developed during his career.

Co-founder and director Alastair Henman said: I am delighted to announce these three promotions to the Zaun Board of Directors.

I believe these additions greatly enhance the strength and breadth of experience on the Board and will improve the governance of the business.

The Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) in the UK maintains a Red Book and its Security Ratings to LPS 1175, through exhaustive assessments by independent testers from the Buildings Research Establishment (BRE).

LPS 1175 specifically covers the approval and listing of intruder resistant building components, strongpoints, security enclosures and free-standing barriers.

To maintain accreditation and a listing in the LPCB Red Book (www.redbooklive.com), manufacturers must regularly demonstrate to independent auditors that they are producing products consistent with those tested. This gives the customer the guarantee that they are getting a secure and quality product.

Zaun has worked extensively in the Arabian peninsula, with clients including Kuwait Oil Corporation, Petroleum Development Oman and the Abu Dhabi military.

Zaun sales and marketing director Chris Plimley said: “A customer in the Middle East has asked us to create a fencing system that could defend against forced entry for at least 10 minutes.

“Just last month, that development fencing system based on our ‘corrugated steel mesh sandwich’ CorruSec resisted serious attempts at forced entry for over 20 minutes in independent tests by BRE assessors. We believe this may be a world record for a fencing system.”

The assessors used top end battery power cutting tools including an awesome 750W reciprocating saw with specialist blades used by fire and rescue teams and 18V circular saws, jigsaws and disk grinders, axes including an 850mm felling axe, a hooligan bar, 1.5kg lump hammer and 500mm long bolt cutters.

Utility fence toppings present razor wire only when climbed

The UK's premier prison security company has adapted its anti-climb fence toppings specifically for the utility sector.

Zaun subsidiary Binns Fencing has created a new configuration of its Flexible Steel Topping (FST) system to mount on utility compound perimeter fencing with razor wire without posing any risk to the public. The system has already been supplied to two gas sites in northern England.

The innovative solution uses a cranked bracket to lift a coil of razor wire up in front of anyone who tries to climb the fence as additional deterrent and obstacle to the toppings existing anti-climb credentials.

At the heart of FST, which is fully tested for use in UK high security prisons, is a steel mesh arch, curved back over the top of a steel fence, fixed to a flexible steel bracket that is designed to move when people try to climb it while withstanding their weight.

Binns MD Adam Binns said: The two gas installations have been extremely well received by our customer and we expect to be selling more FST Utility both to them and other companies in the gas, electricity, water and oil sector.

Seamless integration draws admirers at rebadged SCTX, stand J50

A rare combination of seamlessly-integrated perimeter protection systems will be one of the main attractions for security managers and specifiers of critical national infrastructure sites at the rebranded Security & Counter Terror Expo (SCTX) 2016.

The Zaun Group will be majoring on its stand (J50) on its unique ability to design, manufacture and install both physical and electronic perimeter security systems, all from a single source.

The integrated offer includes Zaun's extensive range of SR rated fencing and gates and a raft of electronic monitoring innovations from software security expert EyeLynx.

Hyde school kids inspired by all-year outdoor PE

Outdoor PE all year round is now a reality at a primary school in Greater Manchester since the installation of an all-weather sports pitch.

Oakfield Primary School in Hyde wanted to improve their outdoor play provision in particular giving greater opportunity for their children to be able to play a range of sports in a designated area away from the main playground.

They appointed Farnborough-based Fawns Recreational Services Ltd to install a 20m x 12m Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) with polymeric surface.

The new court has allowed the school to run PE lessons outdoor all year round and has reduced pressure on the playground during break and lunch times with the ball court being used for free play as well as curriculum activities.

Fawns, which supplies inspirational play for parks, schools & nurseries, turned to Made in the Midlands member and sports fencing expert Zaun for the MUGA fencing.

The MUGA incorporates Zaun's Duo6 and Duo8 twin wire fencing range, with recessed goals hiding exits from the ends and basketball posts, backboards and hoops at either end above the goals.

Police thumbs-up for full HD CCTV at London business centres

The Metropolitan Police have praised the quality of CCTV used by a series of London business centres in the quest to hunt down and prosecute petty criminals.

Police in Kingston-upon-Thames were impressed by the full resolution recording and remote monitoring achieved by Unit Management Ltd, the managing agent for a dozen business centres along the A3 heading out of London.

Facilities manager Alex Brewer said: Kingston police were really impressed with our high-res imagery that is sharp enough even at night for full facial recognition, that has led to arresting and prosecuting would-be thieves.

We have even monitored an incursion of gypsies at our New Malden site while we were down in Devon.

Unit Management has been working with security software expert EyeLynx Ltd for the past five years and is in the process of upgrading all its sites with EyeLynxs iconic SharpView CCTV solutions.

EyeLynx co-founder Jay Patel said: Unit Management has successfully implemented many of the features of SharpView, including video analytics, PIR alarms and the use of radar.

Police recently made arrests from the camera footage when an intruder broke through the perimeter fence at Trident Court in Chessington, where EyeLynxs EPR-500 radar is also in use.

Were able to track people on foot and identify people breaking in through the perimeter fence and even watch people dodging between cars and buildings all remotely, said Mr Brewer.

The latest two installations are at Eurolink in Brixton and Kingspark Business Centre, New Malden, while Mr Brewer is about to commission enhancements to security at Battersea Business Centre, Lavender Hill.

The radar can help detect security threats early then use the software to control CCTV autonomously and zoom in to collect evidence and send to manned patrols or security control rooms.

It can serve as a high-performance very-low-cost early warning of potential threats on large sites, with minimal maintenance and no user intervention once it has been fitted.

Mr Brewer concluded: The EyeLynx system records at full resolution, so images are razor sharp and not the grainy and dark images most people associate with CCTV recordings when youre not live monitoring.

So, with night-vision technology and the advent of widespread superfast broadband, we can monitor from anywhere and pull off recordings to suit.

Essex council serves up tennis drive

An Essex council is looking to piggy back on Olympic tennis fever on the back of Andy Murray's Olympic gold medal defence in Rio and Johanna Konta's inexorable rise up the world rankings.

Waltham Forest Council is seeking to get more people playing tennis after opening new 'state-of-the-art' courts in Ridgeway Park in Chingford.

The park now features six floodlit outdoor tennis courts, two mini tennis courts, a multi-use games area and a new pavilion.

They have run a borough-wide scheme tapping in to the Lawn Tennis Associations Great British Tennis Weekends offering free opportunities for first-time players.

The new courts were installed by Essex business ETC Sports Surfaces, who put in the courts, new LED floodlights and Duo Advantage Tennis mesh from Zaun.

Zaun is the only UK manufacturer of bespoke tennis mesh its Advantage Tennis fencing eliminates many of the downsides of traditional tennis chain link fencing, which deforms over time and is easy to cut, disfigure and vandalise.

A council-led scheme called Play Tennis Waltham Forest is asking people to pay £30 a year for 'unlimited tennis' at courts in Abbotts Park, Chingford Memorial Park, Lloyd Park and Aveling Park.

Families can alternatively pay £45 a year to play tennis on one of the boroughs 18 full-size courts and four mini courts. £5 to play per hour at the new facilities.

US President protected by RDS

US President Donald Trump slept secure behind a ring of steel on his recent State visit to the United Kingdom – thanks to a Made in the Midlands member.

Trump stayed behind an eight-foot-high security fence of Zaun Ltd’s multi award-winning Rapid Deployment System (RDS), developed with partner Highway Care Security, that surrounded the house and gardens of the US Ambassador's residence Winfield House in Regent's Park.

Wolverhampton-based Zaun first created RDS, which forms part of the National Barrier Asset, for political conferences and major outdoor events.

The security fences were erected ahead of the President's controversial three-day state visit to join the celebrations of the 75^thanniversary of D-Day.

Around 10,000 police officers were on duty at a cost to the UK taxpayer of £18m and parts of the London park were closed.

Thousands of protesters gathered to demonstrate against his visit, including the inflatable baby blimp which flew during his last visit to London.

RDS has become the firm favourite with police for securing party conferences since it saved up to 90% of police time and proved its rapid-install-with-high-security credentials during a whistle-stop tour from Brighton to Birmingham via Manchester for the three main UK political parties’ autumn conferences in 2012 and at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland in May 2013.

Since then, RDS has won a number of security innovation awards, including the Security Innovation Award and the Counter Terror Expo Excellence Awards for Best Physical Security Innovation.

A new QuickFit post system halves the manpower for installing RDS, with a team of two able to install a 30m run in just half an hour in trials.

UK’s biggest prison on verge of full capacity

The biggest prison in the UK should reach full capacity soon with construction work on track to end next month to allow the opening of the third and final wing.

The first prisoners were moved to HMP Berwyn in Wrexham on 28 February into Bala wing, the first of three, all designed ultimately to house 702 prisoners.

The second, Alwen, opened last month, with Ministry of Justice (MoJ) bosses confirming the third and final wing, Ceiriog, is on schedule to open next month, bringing the total capacity of adult male offenders to 2,106 500 more than the biggest current prison in England and Wales was built to hold

The majority will be Category C, meaning they have been assessed as having a lower likelihood of escaping, though some Category B prisoners could also be accommodated.

Governor Russ Trent has said his emphasis is on rehabilitation, with staff calling the prisoners 'men', who will have 'rooms' rather than cells.

The construction of HMP Berwyn began in May 2015 and cost £250m.

The UK government has pledged to spend £1.3bn on new prisons, and after the riots in HMP Birmingham last year, Justice Secretary Liz Truss said the new Welsh prison 'will help to reduce overcrowding across the estate'. Nine more new prisons are expected to be built, with five open by 2020.

Binns Fencing won the order to supply and install almost 2km of 5.2m high prison-standard secure perimeter fencing for the Wrexham super prison. Manufacturer Zaun supplied the MoJ approved prison posts and fencing mesh.

Binns has proposed a new model of perimeter security and PIDs procurement and delivery, where it provides a single point of contact for the complete perimeter security package, providing greater opportunity for innovation, reducing complexity and the need to manage multiple contractors.

It believes this could offer significant cost savings on PIDs cable installation and contract and project management costs.

HMP Berwyn is already anticipated to be the cheapest prison to run per prisoner in England and Wales. It is expected to run at £14,000 per head per year, including overheads, compared with £40,170 at Parc in Bridgend, built under the government's Private Finance Initiative and operated by G4S.

Zaun’s RDS protects huge London energy upgrade works

A rapidly-deployable temporary fence line has helped a construction giant deliver a key installation for National Grid to help meet Londons increasing energy needs.

A new 400kV Gas Insulated Switchgear electricity substation has been constructed as part of the EAN Framework and connected to a £1bn 32km electricity superhighway deep below the capital.

Perimeter security mesh manufacturer Zaun Ltd provided 155 metres of high-security Rapid Deployable System (RDS) fencing for temporary protection of the construction works. Zaun subsidiary Binns Fencing installed the system.

RDS has won a number of security innovation awards, has been used to secure the main political parties autumn conferences over recent years and forms part of the National Barrier Asset.

Three massive electricity transformers, each of which had to be delivered on a special 60m long trailer with a police escort, have been craned into place at the Seven Sisters Road substation.

The new 32km electricity superhighway is part of a seven-year £1bn project due to be fully operational this year to help keep Londoners connected to safe and reliable electricity supplies.

This involves reinforcing the high voltage network across London by installing new cables and wires in deep underground tunnels, from Hackney to St Johns Wood, Willesden to St Johns Wood and Wimbledon to Kensal Green.

The project includes the longest single-length cable pull in an underground utility tunnel in the UK.

Middle East contract spawns Zaun flat-panel masterpiece

A massive Middle Eastern contract has given rise to a new flat-panel mesh security fence from Zaun Limited. Zaun has designed a variant of its original HiSec 358 welded mesh configuration with an extra wire every 250mm on the inside to enhance security and keep the panel flat without the need for rails or pressed V-beams. The British manufacturer will ship a staggering 200-plus 40ft containers of the new HiSec Plus panels over the coming year to secure a Middle Eastern site of critical national infrastructure. The first six containers have left the manufacturers Wolverhampton headquarters with a further six set to leave before Easter. The design department has offset the additional 4mm wires setting quite a challenge to the production team to enhance the security characteristics and make the single panel act almost like a dual skin fence. Zaun research and development manager Adam Christie says: Its brilliant to see this new system coming off the production line as its been more than four years in the making. The customer had a very clear specification of what they wanted, but weve been able to work with them over time to make enhancements and to reassure them at every step of the way on quality, design, production, sourcing and logistics. contractThe additional horizontal wires of HiSec Plus remove the typical bowing of traditional 358, while the 2.4m-high fence line is further secured with stainless steel razor coil topping and coated barbed wire as line wires. The panels are bolted to 5mm-thick cold-rolled steel posts, which are being welded to steel base plates at Zaun by a new robot welder bought specifically for the task, with each post and base plate a massive 75kg in dead weight. The rolled steel is folded back on the front attack-prone flange of the post to create an effective 10mm thickness of steel. The post assemblies are then bolted in the field to a continuous concrete beam. The enhanced HiSec specification and fencing system cements Zauns ability to deliver bespoke high-security fencing solutions. Gallagher adds full HD VMS solution to Command Centre integrations

Gallagher Security has extended the range of video management systems (VMS) which can integrate into its ubiquitous access and control solution.

EyeLynx Limited has developed a plugin to integrate its SharpView network video recorder with the Gallagher Command Centre.

This integration allows security managers operating a Gallagher Command Centre for site control to view the high-end recording capabilities of SharpView all in one place.

Security operators can respond swiftly and appropriately to any security threats through real-time display of outputs from complementary security and site management solutions defined uniquely for their site.

SharpView specifically offers full-resolution recording and remote monitoring from an unlimited number of HD CCTV cameras. It is in use at high-security water, utilities and education sites, bringing praise from The Metropolitan Police for its video evidence that is sharp enough even at night for full facial recognition.

Big cats aplenty as hunt for zoo orders becomes a stampede

Big cats in zoos have an uncanny similarity to children in schools when it comes to security fencing!

There's a pressing need to keep them safely inside, protect the outside public from intruding within and yet allow good visibility through the fencing to prevent the environment from appearing like a fortress.

So Made in Britain member Zaun, which is perhaps better known for its schools, prisons and major events perimeter protection, is also often called upon to provide enclosures for lions and tigers.

Its expertise dates way back to 2003 when it first installed its Duo fencing with cranking at the top of the mesh panels to keep the tigers within their enclosure at the Isle of Wight Zoo in Sandown.

The seven tigers, four of whom have circus backgrounds, are the speciality of the zoo, which serves as a sort of retirement home, as is the case with their white tiger, Zena, who has had eye problems for many years and in 2006 had to have one of her eyes removed due to glaucoma.

The family-run zoo was built within the ruins of a Victorian fort that originally guarded Sandown's coast, whose beaches the zoo owners famously used to walk tiger cubs along.

The Sandown solution is very similar to the one Zaun is currently supplying to Longleat Safari and Adventure Park for its lion enclosure and which secures the lions and tigers at Riga Zoo in the Latvian capital.

And the Zaun Group was also involved in the recent reopening of London Zoo's Asiatic lion enclosure after a £5.7m project to create the Land of the Lions covering more than 2,500 sq m, or half the size of a football pitch five times the size of the previous enclosure.

Zaun sales manager Paul Fidgett said: It's something we've never really pushed and we've just had a steady trickle of zoo projects over the years. But for some reason in 2016, we've been inundated with enquiries from zoos, especially for their big cat enclosures, as the efforts to conserve endangered species ramps up.

A string of production equipment acquisitions over the past year has helped make Zaun the leanest manufacturer in the perimeter systems market.

Previous investments focused on the 44,000 sq ft multi-million-pound Paul Holloway Manufacturing Facility that houses the worlds largest mesh weaving machine, which produces ArmaWeave, Zaun's most intruder resistant product for the high security market.

The past year has seen Zaun buy a new tube laser cutter, a further mesh welding line, and automation of other key processes to further enhance its manufacturing capabilities and capacity and cut out waste.

Additional bailers and squashers have boosted recycling while a new forklift truck has improved materials handling.

Training for shop floor staff has seen new welding qualifications for Security Rated product manufacture. New 3D design software has replaced 2D throughout the business, giving customers clearer representations of designs, reducing errors and improving efficiency.

While the introduction of accomplished engineer Roberto Garziera as production and factory manager has streamlined a series of processes and improved productivity and efficiencies in production.

EyeLynx says ‘try before you buy’ with portable radar solution

A security software expert has created a portable system to demonstrate instantly the range of its latest radar unit able to identify predatory vehicles at up to 700m.

EyeLynx has designed a mobile pack fitted with its EPR-500 radar and all-in-one Pharos PTZ camera on top of a tripod and challenged security managers to book a free demo to prove it can detect potential intruders up to a quarter of a mile away and drones at 80 metres.

The free demo is so EyeLynx can show site operators live, in-the-field in their own environment the EPR-500s ability to detect security threats early and the capability of EyeLynx software to control CCTV autonomously and zoom in to collect evidence and send to manned patrols or security control rooms.

Chief executive officer Jay Patel says: We built this portable pack so we can visit your site, get in your car and drive to the remotest location and set up the radar within minutes with a hammer, batteries and camera and demonstrate the extraordinary range of this powerful radar.

Installed correctly at strategic locations, the EPR-500 can serve as a high-performance very-low-cost early warning of potential threats on huge sites, with minimal maintenance and no user intervention once it has been fitted.

Used this way, we believe it could cut the burden on security guards having to monitor and control multiple CCTV cameras. Security managers can simply log in and manage the site from anywhere using our free SharpView Manager Professional software.

Radar technology requires line of sight to the target object, so EyeLynx will advise on PIDs or PIRs and other technologies for blind spots. The system supports multiple radars, cameras and these other sensors and analyses the outputs against user-configured priorities.

The installation and configuration is simpler than with video analytics, returns fewer false alarms, consumes less than 2.5W power and works on the C-band, so no special licences are needed.

However, the radar can work as an add-on to operators existing video management system or as a complete package using EyeLynxs technology.

Integrated into SharpView video management software, it will automatically control Pan Tilt Zoom cameras that follow movements detected by the radar to monitor, track and provide early warnings to security managers of intruders on protected sites, such as utility stations, military bases, national borders, airports, large campuses, solar farms and stately homes.

The video coverage can also record legitimate activity within the perimeter for health and safety monitoring and productivity improvement.

Zaun celebrates its 20^th anniversary this month at the leanest, greenest and keenest point in its history.

The high security and perimeter systems steel fencing manufacturer has reached its china anniversary in rude health after bold investment decisions and innovations that sometimes ran against the grain.

Along with shrewd management, key contracts, clients and collaborators, and a relentless focus on the customer, this has enabled Zaun to grow year on year since launching into the UK fencing market in November 1996.

Wigan’s Robin Park Arena could become ‘world class’ under Warriors

A state-of-the-art multi-sports pitch in Wigan installed only three years ago could receive further investment and upgrade under plans proposed by the towns legendary rugby league side.

Wigan Warriors have entered negotiations with Wigan Council to look at the feasibility of moving the clubs Central Park operations to Robin Park Arena, in the shadow of Wigan Athletic FCs DW Stadium.

Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles, which currently runs Robin Park Arena and its associated leisure centre, are part of the discussions with community groups to improve the health and wellbeing of the boroughs residents.

The plans would see the Warriors turn the arena into a world class sports and community leisure facility and take on its lease, saving the council £241,000 a year in subsidy and maintenance costs.

The council invested £318,000 in a state-of-the-art pitch at the arena only three years ago for sports clubs, football and rugby players in the area.

The 3G FIFA 2-star pitch, which also meets the International Rugby Boards standard and can be used in all weather conditions, is surrounded by 5m high Zaun Limited Duo8 Super Rebound to aid ball retention.

The twin horizontal wire panels are highly durable, low maintenance, graffiti-proof and offer great rebound properties similar to a wall. Ten gates provide access at all points of the pitch.

The fencing was installed by nearby Dawn Fencing of Leigh, which has been going more than 30 years and is the only fencing contractor dedicated solely to sports.

At the time, Wigan councillor Paul Kenny, cabinet member for resources, said: I am really pleased that we have been able to invest in this valuable resource for the benefit of the community. One of the things we are asking people to do as part of the Wigan Deal is become more active and healthy, and it is important that we provide quality facilities to encourage them to do so.

Harper Chalice launch TriSecure perimeter detection system

A leading player in the electronic and electrified perimeter security systems market has launched a hybrid perimeter detection system for the high security market. As a major supplier of other tested and approved perimeter solutions Harper Chalice has used its market knowledge and customer feedback to design a unique solution.

Harper Chalice has unveiled TriSecure, a combination of CPNI-approved microphonic detection system FenceSecure and CPNI-approved electric pulse fence system PulseSecure.

MD Chris Hackett said: We listened to our customers and industry feedback and found what they wanted was to be able to get the best of both technologies rather than having to compromise by choosing a single system. TriSecure not only delivers that but at the same time it removes the weaknesses of each individual technology to provide a much more reliable, secure and effective system.

The issue relating to the electric fence system such as accidental shocks to staff or contractors and vegetation causing false alarms are removed as the electric fence is above the height of the host fence at more than 2m above ground level. At that height, all these issues are negated but the physical and psychological deterrent remains.

Furthermore, as the electric fence provides the anti-climb prevention and detection, the microphonic PID is only required to detect penetration attack meaning the system can be set up to reduce false alarms. Climbing attacks are always going to require a more sensitive setting to detect over a penetration attack. This negates the biggest perceived issue with microphonic PIDs, the false alarm ate.

Both technologies are then brought together with Harper Chalices SecureBus communications network for centralised control and monitoring. SecureBus brings the two technologies together and presents the systems to the user as a single solution.

SecureBus also provides TCP/IP connection and full system integration with other third party security management systems to provide total control and monitoring.

The TriSecure system has already been adopted as the chosen solution for many high security applications that would have previously had to choose between the two technologies.

Hackett added: When it comes to security, particularly high security applications, compromise should never be an option. Instead systems should work together, with the right technology in the right place, to provide complete security solutions. That is our role as security system providers, to provide the solutions required to meet the market needs which was the compelling reason behind the introduction of TriSecure system.

Zaun uplifts SR range to latest BRE standard

High security perimeter systems manufacturer Zaun has uplifted all of its Security Ratings (SR) range to the latest certifications from the Buildings Research Establishment (BRE).

BRE has revised its SRs to Loss Prevention Standard (LPS) 1175 as certified by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) and listed in their Red Book.

The latest revision of LPS1175 to issue 8.0 sets out the requirements and testing procedures for the LPCB certification and listing of intruder resistant building components, strongpoints, security enclosures and free-standing barriers following extensive consultation with stakeholders.

Zaun sales and marketing director Chris Plimley said: “It’s really important to keep up to date on any new standards as they reflect developments in the techniques being used by terrorists and other criminals. Plus, a number of major tenders emerging this year will insist upon issue 8 certifications.”

Zaun received its new certificatations from BRE at the International Security Expo, where its products were submitted to live attack by testers in the LPCB Live Test Lab & Zone.

Issue 8.0 has adapted the previous single digit performance classifications (ie SR 1 to SR8) to one formed of two elements that classify performance in terms of:

Threat level (first element) – letter (A to H) corresponding with the tool kit used to evaluate the product’s intruder resistance and number of attackers involved.
Delay (second element) – numeric value (1, 3, 5, 10, 15 or 20) corresponding with the minimum delay in minutes provided by the product when placed in a locked condition.

The LPCB says that although the new two-part classifications cover 48 combinations of threat and delay, it is considered unlikely that most specifiers, end users and regulators will require individual products to achieve security ratings contained within the black boxes (see table).

Instead, they are more likely to achieve an extended delay by deploying a series of products in a layered approach; a strategy that is supported by the classification system introduced within this standard.

For example, it is considered a 10-minute delay against a level ‘F’ threat is more likely to be achieved by deploying two layers formed of products that achieve an ‘F5’ security rating instead of a single layer formed of products that achieve an ‘F10’ security rating.

Plimley said: “I really like this layered approach to time delays as it better reflects realistic solutions to the real life threats critical national infrastructure faces and it is consistent with the ‘onion skin’ principle of successive rings of security the closer an intruder gets to the most sensitive assets.”

Issue 8.0 products approved by LPCB are rigorously tested for resistance to deliberate attack and play an important role in protecting people and property against physical attack, burglary, vandalism and terrorism.

To maintain accreditation manufacturers must regularly demonstrate to independent auditors that they are producing products consistent with those tested. This gives the customer the guarantee that they are getting a secure and quality product.

Zaun devises ingenious high-security ArmaWeave upgrade to Palisade

Steel mesh manufacturer Zaun has created an innovative high-security weldless mesh panel upgrade to steel Palisade fencing.

Research and development manager Adam Christie has devised an ingenious fastening method to allow installers to fix Zauns ArmaWeave fencing panels to existing Palisade posts and horizontal rails.

So long as the existing Palisade posts were installed to British Standard 1722, they are sufficient to support the ArmaWeave upgrade as the wind loading is almost identical.

The fixings also use the existing bolt holes in the horizontal rails so all that is needed is to drill six holes in the posts to secure vertical clamping members.

As ArmaWeave is self-raking, it mimics the functionality of Palisade and the panels can be manufactured to match the height of the existing Palisade fencing.

Christie says: Its eco-friendly and highly cost effective as it requires minimal groundworks, no spoilage and no plant to dig holes as it utilises the existing posts and concrete foundations.

We expect this upgrade option to be ideal for all sorts of sensitive sites in the rail, utilities, nuclear, data centre and industrial sectors.

Four companies are accredited to install ArmaWeave Allens Total Perimeter Security, Zaun subsidiary Binns Fencing, JB Corrie and Crime & Fire Defence Systems.

All have committed to training their site operatives in the installation methods for ArmaWeave developed by Zaun over time to make best use of its unique high-security woven fabric.

Zaun established the installer scheme after increasing requests from customers to recommend contractors with suitable installation, quality and safety standards.

The wire of the panels has a tensile strength typically more than double welded panels so special methods are needed for cutting the panels during installation.

A 1,000-strong manufacturers’ organisation that promotes the value of British manufacturing as a differentiator is coming to Wolverhampton for its first sales and marketing workshop of the new autumn season.

Pioneering steel fencing systems manufacturer Zaun will host the Made in Britain workshop on Wednesday 19 September, focused on marketing, sales, exports and PR.

Delegates will hear about digital marketing for manufacturers and receive a marketing masterclass from Young’s Seafood’s marketing team.

They will also hear from Zaun about its sales, marketing and export journey and enjoy a tour around Zaun’s factory.

Made in Britain workshops highlight the community spirit of the British manufacturing industry and four events in the spring brought together members to share stories, ideas and advice.

Previous events have taken place at pioneering recycler Axion in Manchester, iconic British car maker Vauxhall, Knowsley cable manufacturer Tratos and global coffee machine manufacturer Fracino in Birmingham.

Made in Britain chief executive John Pearce says: “All the greatest British manufacturers have a story to tell and the workshops offer them a chance to sell those stories to each other. British SME manufacturers need each other more than ever to increase the strength of the British-made supply chain.

Harper Chalice has secured premier prison perimeter systems installer Binns Fencing as an authorised dealer of its high security defence and detection systems and complementary products.

The range is specifically designed to meet the growing demand for reliable protection of people, property and assets worldwide.

Harper Chalice MD Chris Hackett said: “This is one of our most prestigious signings to date and is an indication of where our business is headed.

“We have launched a major focus on prisons, where our PID systems are going from strength to strength, so Binns’ accreditations, relationships and expertise in this field will be critical.

“They will also be dealers for our CPNI-accredited electric fencing and have just completed their first installation of such a system at a wind farm in Yorkshire.”

Harper Chalice has enjoyed rapid growth in the past three years since Hackett led the purchase of a majority shareholding from previous owner and founder Graham Harper which are held on behalf of all of the employees in an employee ownership trust.

SharpView solution secures London water supply

The integrity of the fresh water supply to London has been stepped up with an array of cameras, high security fencing, vibration sensors and razor wire.

The risk to the water supply forced the UK's largest water and waste company to further enhance the security along one side of the perimeter of reservoirs in south London, where a public footpath has provided easier access for trespassers and committed graffiti vandals to enter.

The Zaun Group had already installed ArmaWeave and razor topping around the whole site, so Thames Water asked software security expert EyeLynx to design a solution based on its SharpView CCTV system to protect the site of Critical National Infrastructure.

Zaun Group companies EyeLynx and Binns installed two huge temporary CCTV masts with high performance PTZ cameras, thermal cameras with video analytics, horn speakers and high-powered WiFi to link the two with a SharpView Networked Video Recorder.

CPNI-approved PIDs were also fitted which, fully integrated with SharpView, provide the site with a triple layer of electronic security of the highest quality.

The system can provide alarms and CCTV video evidence so whenever a camera or vibration sensor detects a potential breach of the fence line, the horn speakers can broadcast audio warnings, send alarms to security personnel and capture video evidence for potential prosecutions.

Crawley recreates town centre around Morrisons and bronze clad car park

A stunning new Morrisons supermarket atop a two storey car park with bronze coloured cladding is the centrepiece of a major redevelopment of Crawley town centre.

The 75,000 sq ft superstore, 110 bed Travelodge hotel, 500 space car park and four restaurants made up phase one of Crawley Borough Council's Town Centre North masterplan on the former Sussex House site at the northern end of the High Street.

The scheme designed by architects Lyons Sleeman Hoare was being developed by Land Securities and St Jamess Investments, with McLaren Construction and Warefence appointed to install the car park steel mesh and cladding supplied by perimeter fencing manufacturer Zaun.

Zaun supplied Duo6 panels and posts, a fencing system based on a twin wire design, consisting of two horizontal 6mm wires resistance welded on either side of 5mm vertical wires.

The result was a rigid perimeter fence that offered a high degree of vandal resistance and an extremely high level of through visibility. The mesh also offered the versatility of integrating into a 'green screen'.

The major upgrade of the town centre included £750,000 of improvements to the public highway with pedestrianised areas, improved street lighting and new LED traffic signals at the junction of Pegler Way and The Boulevard.

A further £3.2m of improvement work to Queens Square, the heart of the town centre, will be complete in early 2017. An additional £18m of capital has also been secured from the Local Enterprise Partnership for transport and infrastructure improvements.
